\n<\/b>came a slope that slowly downward sank;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It slipped towards a stumbling grey descent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe dim-heart marvel of the ideal was lost,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts crowding wonder of bright delicate dreams<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd vague half-limned sublimities she had left:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Thought fell towards lower levels; hard and tense<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt passioned for some crude reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe twilight floated still but changed its hues<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd heavily swathed a less delightful dream;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It settled in tired masses on the air;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Its symbol colours tuned with duller reds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd almost seemed a lurid mist of day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA straining taut and dire besieged her heart;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Heavy her sense grew with a dangerous load,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd sadder, greater sounds were in her ears,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd through stern breakings of the lambent glare<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer vision caught a hurry of driving plains<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd cloudy mountains and wide tawny streams,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd cities climbed in minarets and towers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTowards an unavailing changeless sky:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Long quays and ghauts and harbours white with sails<\/span><\/p>\n

\nChallenged her sight awhile and then were gone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmidst them travailed toiling multitudes<\/span><\/p>\n

In ever shifting perishable groups,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA foiled cinema of lit shadowy shapes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEnveloped in the grey mantle of a dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImagining meanings in life’s heavy drift,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey trusted in the uncertain environment<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd waited for death to change their spirit’s scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA savage din of labour and a tramp<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf armoured life and the monotonous hum<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf thoughts and acts that ever were the same,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if the dull reiterated drone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf a great brute machine, beset her soul;\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA grey dissatisfied rumour like a ghost<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf the moaning of a loud unquiet sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA huge inhuman Cyclopean voice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Babel-builder’s song towering to heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA throb of engines and the clang of tools<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrought the deep undertone of labour’s pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs when pale lightnings tear a tortured sky,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHigh overhead a cloud-rimmed series flared<\/span><\/p>\n

\nChasing like smoke from a red funnel driven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe forced creations of an ignorant Mind:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Drifting she saw like pictured fragments flee<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPhantoms of human thought and baffled hopes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe shapes of Nature and the arts of man,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPhilosophies and disciplines and laws,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the dead spirit of old societies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConstructions of the Titan and the worm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if lost remnants of forgotten light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBefore her mind there fled with trailing wings<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDimmed revelations and delivering words,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEmptied of their mission and their strength to save,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe messages of the evangelist gods,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Voices of prophets, scripts of vanishing creeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEach in its hour eternal claimed went by:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Ideals, systems, sciences, poems, crafts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTireless there perished and again recurred,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSought restlessly by some creative Power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut all were dreams crossing an empty vast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAscetic voices called of lonely seers<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn mountain summits or on river banks<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr from the desolate heart of forest glades<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSeeking heaven’s rest or the spirit’s worldless peace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr in bodies motionless like statues, fixed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn tranced cessations of their sleepless thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSat sleeping souls, and this too was a dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll things the past has made and slain were there,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts lost forgotten forms that once had lived,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all the present loves as new-revealed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all the hopes the future brings had failed<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlready, caught and spent in efforts vain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRepeated fruitlessly age after age.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnwearied all returned insisting still<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBecause of joy in the anguish of pursuit<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd joy to labour and to win and lose<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd joy to create and keep and joy to kill.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe rolling cycles passed and came again,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrought the same toils and the same barren end,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForms ever new and ever old, the long<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAppalling revolutions of the world.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnce more arose the great destroying Voice:<\/font><\/p>\n

Across the fruitless labour of the worlds<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis huge denial’s all-defeating might<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPursued the ignorant march of dolorous Time.<\/span><\/font>

"Behold the figures of this symbol realm,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nInspiring the great concrete tasks of earth.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In its motion-parable of human life<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Here thou canst trace the outcome Nature gives<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nTo the sin of being and the error in things<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And the desire that compels to live<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And man’s incurable malady of hope.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In an immutable order’s hierarchy<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Where Nature changes not, man cannot change:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Ever he obeys her fixed mutation’s law;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In a new version of her oft-told tale<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn ever-wheeling cycles turns the race.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis mind is pent in circling boundaries:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For mind is man, beyond thought he cannot soar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf he could leave his limits he would be safe:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He sees but cannot mount to his greater heavens;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Even winged, he sinks back to his native soil.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe is a captive in his net of mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd beats soul-wings against the walls of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn vain his heart lifts up its yearning prayer,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPeopling with brilliant Gods the formless Void;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Then disappointed to the Void he turns<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in its happy nothingness asks release,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe calm Nirvana of his dream of self:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Word in silence ends, in Nought the name.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Apart amid the mortal multitudes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He calls the Godhead incommunicable<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To be the lover of his lonely soul<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or casts his spirit into its void embrace,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or he finds his copy in the impartial All;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He imparts to the Immobile his own will,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Attributes to the Eternal wrath and love<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd to the Ineffable lends a thousand names.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHope not to call God down into his life:<\/span><\/font>

\n

How shalt thou bring the Everlasting here?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere is no house for him in hurrying Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVainly thou seek’st in Matter’s world an aim;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

No aim is there, only a will to be.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All walk by Nature bound for ever the same.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Look on these forms that stay awhile and pass,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

These lives that long and strive, then are no more,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

These structures that have no abiding truth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The saviour creeds that cannot save themselves,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But perish in the strangling hands of the years,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Discarded from man’s thought, proved false by Time,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Philosophies that strip all problems bare<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But nothing ever have solved since earth began,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And sciences omnipotent in vain<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

By which men learn of what the suns are made,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Transform all forms to serve their outward needs,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Ride through the sky and sail beneath the sea,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But learn not what they are or why they came;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

These polities, architectures of man’s brain,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

That, bricked with evil and good, wall in man’s spirit<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And, fissured houses, palace at once and jail,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Rot while they reign and crumble before they crash;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

These revolutions, demon or drunken god,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nConvulsing the wounded body of mankind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly to paint in new colours an old face;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

These wars, carnage triumphant, ruin gone mad,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe work of centuries vanishing in an hour,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe blood of the vanquished and the victor’s crown<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhich men to be born must pay for with their pain,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The hero’s face divine on satyr’s limbs,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe demon’s grandeur mixed with the demi-god’s,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The glory and the beasthood and the shame;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Why is it all, the labour and the din,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe transient joys, the timeless sea of tears,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe longing and the hoping and the cry,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe battle and the victory and the fall,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe aimless journey that can never pause,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe waking toil, the incoherent sleep?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSong, shouts and weeping, wisdom and idle words,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe laughter of men, the irony of the gods?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere leads the march, whither the pilgrimage?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho keeps the map of the route or planned each stage?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr else self-moved the world walks its own way,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr nothing is there but only a Mind that dreams:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The world is a myth that happened to come true,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA legend told to itself by conscious Mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImaged and played on a feigned Matter’s ground<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn which it stands in an unsubstantial Vast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMind is the author, spectator, actor, stage:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Mind only is and what it thinks is seen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf Mind is all, renounce the hope of bliss;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

If Mind is all, renounce the hope of Truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor Mind can never touch the body of Truth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Mind can never see the soul of God;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Only his shadow it grasps nor hears his laugh<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAs it turns from him to the, vain seeming of things.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Mind is a tissue woven of light and shade<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Where right and wrong have sewn their mingled parts;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Or Mind is Nature’s marriage of covenance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBetween truth and falsehood, between joy and pain:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

This struggling pair no court can separate.<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Each thought is a gold coin with bright alloy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd error and truth are its obverse and reverse:<\/span><\/font>

This is the imperial mintage of the brain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd of this kind is all its currency.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThink not to plant on earth the living Truth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr make of Matter’s world the home of God;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Truth comes not there but only the thought of Truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGod is not there but only the name of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf Self there is, it is bodiless and unborn;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It is no one and it is possessed by none,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

On what shalt thou then build thy happy world?<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Cast off thy life and mind, then art thou Self,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An all-seeing Omnipresence stark, alone,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

If God there is he cares not for the world;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

All things he sees with calm indifferent gaze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has doomed all hearts to sorrow and desire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has bound all life with his implacable laws;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

He answers not the ignorant voice of prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEternal while the ages toil beneath,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnmoved, untouched by aught that he has made,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe sees as minute details mid the stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe animal’s agony and the fate of man:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Immeasurably wise, he exceeds thy thought;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His solitary joy needs not thy love.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His truth in human thinking cannot dwell:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

If thou desirest truth then still thy mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor ever, slain by the dumb unseen Light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmortal bliss lives not in human air:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

How shall the mighty Mother her calm delight<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKeep fragrant in this narrow fragile vase<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr lodge her sweet unbroken ecstasy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn hearts which earthly sorrow can assail<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And bodies careless Death can slay at will?<\/font><\/p>\n

Dream not to change the world that God has

Strive not to alter his eternal law.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf heavens there are whose gates are shut to grief,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThere seek the joy thou couldst not find on earth;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Or in the imperishable hemisphere<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere Light is native and Delight is king<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Spirit is the deathless ground of Things,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nChoose thy high station, child of Eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf thou art Spirit and Nature is thy robe,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCast off thy garb and be thy naked self<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmutable in its undying truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlone for ever in the mute Alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTurn then to God, for him leave all behind;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Forgetting Love, forgetting Satyavan,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Annul thyself in his immobile peace.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

0 soul, drown in his still beatitude.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nFor thou must die to thyself to reach God’s height:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I, Death, am the gate of immortality."<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut Savitri answered to the sophist God:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

"Once more wilt thou call Light to blind Truth’s eyes,,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMake knowledge a catch of the snare of Ignorance<\/span><\/p>\n

\n.And the Word a dart to slay my living Soul?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOffer, 0 king, thy boons to tired spirits<\/span><\/p>\n

\n.And hearts that could not bear the wounds of Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLet those who were tied to body and to mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTear off those bonds and flee into white calm<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCrying for a refuge from the play of God,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSurely thy boons are great since thou art He!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut how shall I seek rest in endless peace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho house the mighty Mother’s violent force,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer vision turned to read the enigmaed world,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Her will tempered in the blaze of Wisdom’s sun<\/font><\/p>\n

The world is a spiritual paradox<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Invented by a need in the Unseen,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A poor translation to the creature’s sense<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Of That which for ever exceeds idea and speech,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A symbol of what can never be symbolised,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Yet without reason life is a tangle of dreams,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd stands at last upon a plank of doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEternal truth lives not with mortal men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr if she dwells not within thy mortal heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nShow me the body of the living Truth<\/span><\/p>\n

Being known to be for ever unknowable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo be all and yet transcend the mystic whole,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbsolute, to lodge in a relative world of Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEternal and all-knowing, to suffer birth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOmnipotent, to sport with Chance and Fate,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSpirit, yet to be Matter and the Void,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIllimitable, beyond form or name<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo dwell within a body, one and supreme<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the casual error of the world’s ignorance<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA plan, a hidden Intelligence is glimpsed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere is a purpose in each stumble and fall;<\/span><\/font>

\nFlame-signs of its uncomprehended Thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a wide brooding ether’s formless muse:<\/span><\/font>

It made of Knowledge a veiled and struggling light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf Being a substance nescient, dense and dumb,<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaves the huge universe in which it lived<\/font><\/p>\n

An insignificant unconsidered guest.<\/font><\/p>\n

But the soul grows concealed within its house;<\/font><\/p>\n

It gives to the body its strength and magnificence;<\/font><\/p>\n

\nOut of this tangle of intellect and sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of the narrow scope of finite thought<\/span><\/p>\n

A high liberty begins and luminous room:<\/font><\/p>\n

He glimpses eternity, touches the infinite,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe many’s sweetness, the joy of difference<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur human words can only shadow her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo thought she is an unthinkable rapture of light,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO Death, if thou couldst touch the Truth supreme<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou wouldst grow suddenly wise and cease to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts infinite radiance would seize our hearts,<\/span><\/p>\n
