\nAnd the blind Void struggles to live and see,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thinker and toiler in the ideal’s air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBrought down to earth’s dumb need her radiant power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis was a spirit that stooped from larger spheres<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto our province of ephemeral sight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA colonist from immortality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA pointing beam on earth’s uncertain roads,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis birth held up a symbol and a sign;<\/span><\/font>

His human self like a translucent cloak<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCovered the All-Wise who leads the unseeing world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAffiliated to cosmic Space and Time<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd paying here God’s debt to earth and man<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA greater sonship was his divine right.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlthough consenting to mortal ignorance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis knowledge shared the Light ineffable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA strength of the original Permanence<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEntangled in the moment and its flow,<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

His soul breaks out to join the Oversoul,<\/font><\/p>\n

His life is oceaned by that superlife.<\/font><\/p>\n

He has drunk from the breasts of the Mother of the worlds;<\/font><\/p>\n

A topless supernature fills his frame:<\/font><\/p>\n

She adopts his spirit’s everlasting ground<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs the security of her changing world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd shapes the figure of her unborn mights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmortally she conceives herself in him,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the creature the unveiled creatrix works:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Her face is seen through his face, her eyes through his eyes;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Her being is his through a vast identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen is revealed in man the overt Divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA static Oneness and dynamic Power<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDescend in him, the integral Godhead’s seals;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His soul and body take that splendid stamp.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA long dim preparation is man’s life,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA circle of toil and hope and war and peace<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTracked out by Life on Matter’s obscure ground<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In his climb to a peak no feet have ever trod,<\/font><\/p>\n

A veiled reality half-known, ever missed,<\/font><\/p>\n

A search for something or someone never found,<\/font><\/p>\n

Cult of an ideal never made real here,<\/font><\/p>\n

An endless spiral of ascent and fall<\/font><\/p>\n

Until at last is reached the giant point<\/font><\/p>\n

Through which his Glory shines for whom we were made<\/font><\/p>\n

And we break into the infinity of God.<\/font><\/p>\n

Across our nature’s border line we escape<\/font><\/p>\n

Into supernature’s arc of living light.<\/font><\/p>\n

This now was witnessed in that son of Force,<\/font><\/p>\n

In him that high transition laid its base.<\/font><\/p>\n

Original and supernal Immanence<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Of which all Nature’s process is the art,<\/font><\/p>\n

The cosmic Worker set his secret hand<\/font><\/p>\n

To turn this frail mud-engine to heaven-use.<\/font><\/p>\n

It beat his soil to bear a Titan’s weight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Craftsman of the magic stuff of self<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho labours at his high and difficult plan<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the wide workshop of the wonderful world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nModelled in inward Time his rhythmic parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen came the abrupt transcendent miracle:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The masked immaculate Grandeur could outline,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

At travail in the occult womb of life,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

His dreamed magnificence of things to be.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A crown of the architecture of the worlds,<\/font><\/p>\n

A mystery of married Earth and Heaven

A gap was rent in the all-concealing vault;<\/font><\/p>\n

The conscious ends of being went rolling back:<\/font><\/p>\n

The landmarks of the little person fell,<\/font><\/p>\n

Life’s barriers opened into the Unknown.<\/font><\/p>\n

Abolished were conception’s covenants <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And, striking off subjection’s rigorous clause<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnnulled the soul’s treaty with Nature’s nescience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll the grey inhibitions were torn off<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd broken the intellect’s hard and lustrous lid;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Truth unpartitioned found immense sky-room;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An empyrean vision saw and knew; <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The bounded mind became a boundless light, <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The finite self mated with Infinity.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nHis march now soared into an eagle’s flight.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of apprenticeship to Ignorance<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Wisdom upraised him to her master craft<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd made him an arch-mason of the soul,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A builder of the Immortal’s secret house,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An aspirant to supernal Timelessness:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Freedom and empire called to him from on high;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Above mind’s twilight and life’s star-led night<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere gleamed the dawn of a spiritual day.<\/span><\/font>

As so he grew into his larger self,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHumanity framed his movements less and less,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA greater being saw a greater world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA fearless will for knowledge dared to erase<\/span><\/font>

In hands sustained by a transfiguring Might<\/font><\/p>\n

Left slumbering in a sealed and secret cave<\/font><\/p>\n

The powers that sleep unused in man within.<\/font><\/p>\n

He made of miracle a normal act<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And, turned to a common part of divine works,<\/font><\/p>\n

Magnificently natural at this height<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Efforts that would shatter the strength of mortal hearts,<\/font><\/p>\n

Pursued in a royalty of mighty ease<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Aims too sublime for Nature’s daily will:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The gifts of the spirit crowding came to him,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThey were his life’s pattern and his privilege.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA pure perception lent its lucent joy:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Its intimate vision waited not to think;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It enveloped all Nature in a single glance,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt looked into the very self of things;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Deceived no more by form he saw the soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn beings it knew what lurked to them unknown;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It seized the idea in mind, the wish in the heart;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It plucked out from grey folds of secrecy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe motives which from their own sight men hide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe felt the beating life in other men<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInvade him with their happiness and their grief;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Their love, their anger, their unspoken hopes<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Entered in currents or in pouring waves<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Into the immobile ocean of his calm.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He heard the inspired sound of his own thoughts<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Re-echoed in the vault of other minds;<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYet stood untouched, king of itself, alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA magical accord quickened and attuned<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo ethereal symphonies the old earthy strings;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It raised the servitors of mind and life<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To be happy partners in the soul’s response,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nTissue and nerve were turned to sensitive chords,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Records of lustre and ecstasy; it made<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The body’s means the spirit’s acolytes.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A heavenlier function with a finer mode<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Lit with its grace man’s outward earthliness;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The soul’s experience of its deeper sheaths<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo more slept drugged by Matter’s dominance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the dead wall closing us from wider self,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto a secrecy of apparent sleep,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mystic tract beyond our waking thoughts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA door parted, built in by Matter’s force,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nReleasing things unseized by earthly sense:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A world unseen, unknown by outward mind<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Appeared in the silent spaces of the soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe sat in secret chambers looking out<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the luminous countries of the unborn<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere all things dreamed by the mind are seen and true<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all that the life longs for is drawn close.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe saw the Perfect in their starry homes<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWearing the glory of a deathless form<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLain in the arms of the Eternal’s peace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRapt in the heart-beats of God-ecstasy.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

He lived in the mystic space where thought is born<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd will is nursed by an ethereal Power<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor the coming of the new and the unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe gazed across the empty stillnesses<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd heard the footsteps of the undreamed Idea <\/span> <\/p>\n

\nIn the far avenues of the Beyond. –<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe heard the secret Voice, the Word that knows,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd saw the secret face that is our own.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe inner planes uncovered their crystal doors;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Strange powers and influences touched his life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA vision came of higher realms than ours,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA consciousness of brighter fields and skies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf beings less circumscribed than brief-lived men<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn old pull of subconscious cords renews;<\/span><\/font>

It draws the unwilling spirit from the heights,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOr a dull gravitation drags us down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo the blind driven inertia of our base.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis too the supreme Diplomat can use,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe makes our fall a means for greater rise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor into the ignorant nature’s gusty field,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the half-ordered chaos of mortal life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe formless Power, the Self of eternal light<\/span><\/p>\n
