\nTHE KINGDOMS

\nTHE GREATER MIND<\/font><\/b><\/span><\/font>

\n

T<\/font><\/b><\/span>HERE<\/b>
\nceased the limits of the labouring Power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut being and creation cease not there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor Thought transcends the circles of mortal mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt is greater than its earthly instrument:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The godhead crammed into mind’s narrow
\nspace<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Escapes on every side into some vast<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

That is a passage to infinity.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It moves eternal in the spirit’s field,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A runner towards the far spiritual light,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A child and servant of the spirit’s force.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But mind too falls back from a nameless
\npeak.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His being stretched beyond the sight of
\nThought.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

For the spirit is eternal and unmade<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And not by thinking was its greatness
\nborn,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And not by thinking can its knowledge
\ncome.<\/font><\/p>\n

It knows itself and in itself it lives,<\/font><\/p>\n

It moves where no thought is nor any form.<\/font><\/p>\n

Its feet are steadied upon finite things,<\/font><\/p>\n

Its wings can dare to cross the Infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

Arriving into his ken a wonder space<\/font><\/p>\n

Of great and marvellous meetings called
\nhis steps,<\/font><\/p>\n

Where Thought leaned on a Vision beyond
\nthought<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Origin of the little that we are,<\/font><\/p>\n

A prop of all that human strength enacts,<\/font><\/p>\n

Creator of hopes by earth unrealised,<\/font><\/p>\n

It spreads beyond the expanding universe;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It wings beyond the boundaries of Dream,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It overtops the ceiling of life’s soar.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Awake in a luminous sphere unbound by
\nThought,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Exposed to omniscient immensities,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt casts on our world its great crowned
\ninfluences,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nIts speed that outstrips the ambling of
\nthe hours,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nIts force that strides invincibly through
\nTime,<\/font><\/p>\n

Its mights that bridge the gulf twixt man

Its lights that combat Ignorance and
\nDeath.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In its vast ambit of ideal Space<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhere beauty and mightiness walk hand in
\nhand,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Spirit’s truths take form as living
\nGods<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And each can build a world in its own
\nright.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn an air which doubt and error cannot
\nmark<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

With the stigmata of their deformity,<\/font><\/p>\n

In communion with the musing privacy<\/font><\/p>\n

In sessions of secure felicity,<\/font><\/p>\n

Far are those realms from our labour and

Perfection’s reign and hallowed sanctuary<\/font><\/p>\n

Closed to the uncertain thoughts of human
\nmind,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Remote from the turbid tread of mortal
\nlife.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But since our secret selves are next of
\nkin,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A breath of unattained divinity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Visits the imperfect earth on which we
\ntoil;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Across a gleaming ether’s golden laugh<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A light falls on our vexed unsatisfied
\nlives,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A thought comes down from the ideal worlds<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And moves us to new-model even here<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Some image of their greatness and appeal<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And wonder beyond the ken of mortal hope.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Amid the heavy sameness of the days<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And contradicted by the human law,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A faith in things that are not and must be<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Lives comrade of this world’s delight and
\npain,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The child of the secret soul’s forbidden
\ndesire<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Born of its amour with eternity.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our spirits break free from their
\nenvironment;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The future brings its
\nface of miracle near,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts godhead looks at us with present eyes;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Acts deemed impossible grow natural;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

We feel the hero’s immortality,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The courage and the strength death cannot
\ntouch<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Awake in limbs that are mortal, hearts
\nthat fail;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

We move by the rapid
\nimpulse of a will<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat scorns the tardy trudge of mortal Time.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

These promptings come not from an alien
\nsphere:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Ourselves are citizens
\nof that mother State,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdventurers, we have colonised Matter’s night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut now our rights are barred, our passports void;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We live self-exiled
\nfrom our heavenlier home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn errant ray from the immortal Mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAccepted the earth’s blindness and became<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOur human thought, servant of Ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn exile, labourer on this unsure globe<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCaptured and driven in Life’s nescient grasp,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHampered by obscure cell and treacherous nerve,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt dreams of happier states and nobler powers,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe natural privilege of unfallen gods<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRecalling still its old lost sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAmidst earth’s mist and fog and mud and stone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt still remembers its exalted sphere<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the high city of its splendid birth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA memory steals from a lost heaven of Truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA wide release comes near, a Glory calls,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA might looks out, an estranged felicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn glamorous passages of half-veiled light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWandering, a brilliant shadow of itself, .<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis quick uncertain leader of blind gods,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis tender of small lamps, this minister serf<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHired by a mind and body for earth-use<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForgets its work mid crude realities;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It recovers its renounced imperial right,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nIt wears once more its purple robe of
\nthought<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd knows itself the Ideal’s seer and
\nking,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nCommunicant and prophet of the Unborn,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Heir to delight and immortality.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll things are real that here are only
\ndreams,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In our unknown depths
\nsleeps their reserve of truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn our unreached heights they reign and come to us<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut our dwarf will and cold pragmatic sense<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAdmit not the celestial visitants:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Awaiting us on the Ideal’s peaks<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or guarded in our secret self unseen<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet flashed sometimes across the awakened
\nsoul,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Hide from our lives their greatness,
\nbeauty, power.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our present feels sometimes their regal
\ntouch,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our future strives towards their luminous
\nthrones:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Out of spiritual
\nsecrecy they gaze,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImmortal footfalls in mind’s corridors sound:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our souls can climb into the shining
\nplanes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The breadths from which they came can be
\nour home.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His privilege regained of shadowless sight<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Thinker entered the immortals’ air<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And drank again his pure and mighty
\nsource.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Immutable in rhythmic calm and joy<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He saw, sovereignly free in limitless
\nlight,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The unfallen planes, the thought-created
\nworlds<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Where Knowledge is the leader of the act<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And Matter is of thinking substance made,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Feeling, a heaven-bird poised on dreaming
\nwings,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Answers Truth’s call as to a parent’s
\nvoice,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Form luminous leaps from the all-shaping
\nbeam<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And Will is a conscious chariot of the
\nGods,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And Life, a splendour-stream of musing
\nForce,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Carries the voices of the mystic Suns.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A happiness it brings of whispered truth;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

There runs in its flow
\nhoneying the bosom of Space<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA laughter from the immortal heart of Bliss,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The chainless and omnipotent Spirit of

Far-off he saw the joining hemispheres.<\/font><\/p>\n

On meditation’s mounting edge of trance<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nGreat stairs of thought climbed up to
\nunborn heights<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Where Time’s last ridges touch eternity’s
\nskies<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And Nature speaks to the spirit’s
\nabsolute.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\n

A triple realm of
\nordered thought came first,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA small beginning of immense ascent:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Above were bright ethereal skies of mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A packed and endless soar as if sky
\npressed sky<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Buttressed against the Void on bastioned
\nlight;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The highest strove to neighbour eternity,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The largest widened into the infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But though immortal, mighty and divine,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThe first realms were close and kin to
\nhuman mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Their deities shape our greater thinking’s
\nroads,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A fragment of their puissance can be ours:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

These breadths were not
\ntoo broad for our souls to range,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese heights were not too high for human hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA triple flight led to this triple world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlthough abrupt for common strengths to tread,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIts upward slope looks down on our earth-poise:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

To commune with the mortal’s universe.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The mighty wardens of the ascending stair<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Who intercede with the all-creating Word,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

There waited for the pilgrim heaven-bound
\nsoul;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Holding the thousand keys of the Beyond<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They proffered their knowledge to the
\nclimbing mind<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And filled the life with Thought’s
\nimmensities.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The prophet hierophants of the occult Law,
\n.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The flame-bright hierarchs of the divine
\nTruth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Interpreters between man’s mind and God’s,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

They bring the immortal fire to mortal
\nmen.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Iridescent, bodying the invisible,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The guardians of the Eternal’s bright
\ndegrees<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Fronted the sun in radiant phalanxes.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Afar they seemed a symbol imagery,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Illumined originals of the shadowy script<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In which our sight transcribes the ideal
\nRay,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Or icons figuring a mystic Truth,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But, nearer. Gods and living Presences.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A march of friezes marked the lowest
\nsteps,<\/font><\/p>\n

\nThus each is satisfied with his high gain<\/span><\/font>

\nThe one true light, her beauty’s glowing whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut thought nor word can seize eternal Truth:<\/span><\/font>

The whole world lives
\nin a lonely ray of her sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn our thinking’s close and narrow lamp-lit house<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe vanity of our shut mortal mind<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDreams that the chains of thought have made her ours,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut only we play with our own brilliant bonds;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Tying her down, it is
\nourselves we tie.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn our hypnosis by one luminous point<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe see not what small figure of her we hold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe feel not her inspiring boundlessness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe share not her immortal liberty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus is it even with the seer and sage;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For still the human limits the divine:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Out of our thoughts we must leap up to
\nsight, :<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Breathe her divine
\nillimitable air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer simple vast supremacy confess,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDare to surrender to her absolute.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen the Unmanifest reflects his form<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the still mind as in a living glass;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The timeless Ray
\ndescends into our hearts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd we are rapt into eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor Truth is wider, greater than her forms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thousand icons they have made of her<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd find her in the idols they adore;<\/span><\/font>
