\nTHE ADORATION OF THE DIVINE MOTHER<\/font><\/b><\/span><\/font>

\n <\/p>\n

\n
\nA<\/font> STILLNESS<\/font><\/b><\/span> absolute, incommunicable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMeets the sheer self-discovery of the soul;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A wall of stillness shuts it from the world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA gulf of stillness swallows up the sense<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd makes unreal all that mind has known,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll that the labouring senses still would weave<\/span><\/p>\n

\nProlonging an imaged unreality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSelf’s vast spiritual silence occupies space,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly the Inconceivable is left,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly the Nameless without space and time:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Abolished is the burdening need of life:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Thought falls from us, we cease from joy and grief,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe ego is dead, we are free from being and care,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe have done with birth and death and work and fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nO soul, it is too early to rejoice!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou hast reached the boundless silence of the Self,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThou hast leaped into a glad divine abyss;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But where hast thou thrown self’s mission and self’s power?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn what dead bank on the Eternal’s road?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne was within thee who was self and world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat hast thou done for his purpose in the stars?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEscape brings not the victory and the crown!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSomething thou cam’st to do from the Unknown,<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But nothing is finished and the world goes on:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Because only half God’s cosmic work is done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly the everlasting No has neared<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd stared into thy eyes and killed thy heart:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But where is the Lover’s everlasting Yes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd immortality in the secret heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe voice that chants to the creator Fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe symboled OM, the great assenting Word,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe bridge between the rapture and the calm,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe passion and the beauty of the Bride,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe chamber where the glorious enemies kiss,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe smile that saves, the golden peak of things?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis too is Truth at the mystic fount of Life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA black veil has been lifted; we have seen<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mighty shadow of the omniscient Lord;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But who has lifted up the veil of light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd who has seen the body of the King?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe mystery of God’s birth and acts remains<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeaving unbroken the’ last chapter’s seal,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nUnsolved the riddle of the unfinished Play;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The cosmic Player laughs within his mask,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And still the last inviolate secret hides<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Behind the human glory of a Form,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Behind the gold eidolon of a Name.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A large white line has figured as a goal,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

But far beyond the ineffable suntracks blaze.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

What seemed the source and end was a wide gate,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A last bare step into eternity.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An eye has opened upon timelessness,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Infinity takes back the forms it gave,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And through God’s darkness or his naked light<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His million rays return into the Sun.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a zero sign of the Supreme;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Nature left nude and still uncovers God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut in her grandiose nothingness all is there:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

When her strong garbs are torn away from us,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe soul’s ignorance is slain but not the soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe zero covers an immortal face.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA high and black negation is not all,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA huge extinction is not God’s last word,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLife’s ultimate sense, the close of being’s course,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe meaning of this great mysterious world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn absolute silence sleeps an absolute Power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAwaking, it can wake the trance-bound soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd in the ray reveal the parent sun: .<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt can make the world a vessel of Spirit’s force,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt can fashion in the clay God’s perfect shape.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo free the self is but one radiant pace;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Here to fulfil himself was God’s desire.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Even while he stood on being’s naked edge<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd all the passion and seeking of his soul<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFaced their extinction in some featureless Vast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Presence he yearned for suddenly drew close.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAcross the silence of the ultimate Calm,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOut of a marvellous Transcendence’ core,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA body of wonder and translucency<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs if a sweet mystic summary of her self<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEscaping into the original Bliss<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHad come enlarged out of eternity,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSomeone came infinite and absolute.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA being of wisdom, power and delight,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven as a mother draws her child to her arms, <\/span> <\/p>\n

\nTook to her breast Nature and world and soul.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Abolishing the signless emptiness,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBreaking the vacancy and voiceless hush,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPiercing the limitless Unknowable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the liberty of the motionless depths<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA beautiful and felicitous lustre stole,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImaged itself in a surprising beam<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd built a golden passage to his heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTouching through him all longing sentient things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA moment’s sweetness of the All-Beautiful<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCancelled the vanity of the cosmic whirl.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Nature throbbing with a Heart divine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWas felt in the unconscious universe;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It made the breath a happy mystery<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nAnd brought a love sustaining pain with joy;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A love that bore the cross of pain with joy<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Eudaemonised the sorrow of the world,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nMade happy the weight of long unending Time,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The secret caught of God’s felicity.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Affirming in life a hidden ecstasy<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

It held the spirit to its miraculous course;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Carrying immortal values to the hours<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt justified the labour of the suns.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor one was there supreme behind the God.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Mother Might brooded upon the world;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A Consciousness revealed its marvellous front<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTranscending all that is, denying none:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Imperishable above our fallen heads<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nHe felt a rapturous and unstumbling Force.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The undying Truth appeared, the enduring Power<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nOf all that here is made and then destroyed,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThe Mother of all godheads and all strengths<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nWho, mediatrix, binds earth to the Supreme.<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The Enigma ceased that rules our nature’s night,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe covering Nescience was unmasked and slain;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Its mind of error was stripped off from things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the dull moods of its perverting will.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIllumined by her all-seeing identity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKnowledge and Ignorance could strive no more;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

No longer could the titan Opposites,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAntagonist poles of the world’s artifice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nImpose the illusion of their twofold screen<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrowing their figures between us and her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Wisdom was near, disguised by its own works,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOf which the darkened universe is the robe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo more existence seemed an aimless fall,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nExtinction was no more the sole release. ,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe hidden Word was found, the long-sought clue,  ,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRevealed was the meaning of our spirit’s birth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCondemned to an imperfect body and mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the inconscience of material things<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd the indignity of mortal life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Heart was felt in the spaces wide and bare,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA burning Love from white spiritual founts<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnnulled the sorrow of the ignorant depths;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Suffering was lost in her immortal smile.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A Life from beyond grew conqueror here of Death;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

To err no more was natural to mind;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Wrong could not come where all was light and love. ,. .<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Formless and the Formed were joined in her.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Immensity was exceeded by a look,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A Face revealed the crowded Infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Incarnating inexpressibly in her limbs<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The boundless joy the blind world-forces seek,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her body of beauty mooned the seas of bliss. , .<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

At the head she stands of birth and toil and fate,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn their slow round the cycles turn to her call;<\/span><\/font>

\nAlone her hands can change Time’s dragon base.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHers is the mystery the Night conceals;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The spirit’s alchemist energy is hers;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

She is the golden bridge, the wonderful fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe luminous heart of the Unknown is she,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA power of silence in the depths of God;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

She is the Force, the inevitable Word,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe magnet of our difficult ascent,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Sun from which we kindle all our suns,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Light that leans from the unrealised Vasts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe joy that beckons from the impossible,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Might of all that never yet came down.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll Nature dumbly calls to her alone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo heal with her feet the aching throb of life<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd break the seals on the dim soul of man<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd kindle her fire in the closed heart of things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll here shall be one day her sweetness’s home,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll contraries prepare her harmony;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Towards her our knowledge climbs, our passion gropes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In her miraculous rapture we shall dwell,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her clasp will turn to ecstasy our pain.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our self shall be one self with all through her.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In her confirmed because transformed in her,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Our life shall find in its fulfilled response<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Above, the boundless hushed beatitudes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Below, the wonder of the embrace divine.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

This known as in a thunder-flash of God,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The rapture of things eternal filled his limbs;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Amazement fell upon his ravished sense;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His spirit was caught in her intolerant flame.<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Once seen, his heart acknowledged only her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOnly a hunger of infinite bliss was left.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll aims in her were lost, then found in her,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis base was gathered into one pointing spire.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Thus was a seed cast into endless Time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Word is spoken or a Light is shown,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA moment sees, the ages toil to express.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo flashing out of the Timeless leaped the worlds;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

An eternal instant is the cause of the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll he had done was to prepare a field,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis small beginnings asked for a mighty end:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For all that he had been must now new-shape<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn him her joy to embody, to enshrine<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer beauty and greatness in his house of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut now his being was too wide for self;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His heart’s demand had grown immeasurable:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His single freedom could not satisfy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer light, her bliss he asked for earth and men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut vain are human power and human love<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo break earth’s seal of ignorance and death;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His nature’s might seemed now an infant’s grasp;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Heaven is too high for outstretched hands to seize.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis Light comes not by struggle or by thought;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In the mind’s silence the Transcendent acts<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And the hushed heart hears the unuttered Word.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A vast surrender was his only strength.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A Power that lives upon the heights must act,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Bring into life’s closed room the Immortal’s air<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And fill the finite with the Infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

All that denies must be torn out and slain<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And crushed the many longings for Whose sake<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

We lose the One for whom our lives were made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNow other claims had hushed in him their cry:<\/span><\/font>

Only he longed to draw her presence and power<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto his heart and mind and breathing frame;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Only he yearned to call for ever down<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHer healing touch of love and truth and joy<\/span><\/p>\n

\nInto the darkness of the suffering world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis soul was freed and given to her alone.<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n
