\nAmid the lifeless silence of the Void<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn a solitude and an immensity<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA sound came quivering like a loved footfall<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeard in the listening spaces of the soul;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A touch perturbed his fibres with delight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn influence had approached the mortal range,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA boundless Heart was near his longing heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA mystic Form enveloped his earthly shape.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll at her contact broke from silence’ seal;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Spirit and body thrilled identified,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLinked in the grasp of an unspoken joy;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Mind, members, life were merged in ecstasy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIntoxicated as with nectarous rain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis nature’s passioning stretches flowed to her<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFlashing with lightnings, mad with luminous wine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll was a limitless sea that heaved to the moon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA divinising stream possessed his veins,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis body’s cells awoke to spirit sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEach nerve became a burning thread of joy:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Tissue and flesh partook beatitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlight, the dun unplumbed subconscient caves<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThrilled with the prescience of her longed-for tread<\/span><\/p>\n

And filled with flickering crests and praying tongues.<\/font><\/p>\n

His very body answered to her power.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The One he worshipped was within him now:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Flame-pure, ethereal-tressed a mighty Face<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAppeared and lips moved by immortal words,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLids, wisdom’s leaves, drooped over rapture’s orbs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA marble monument of ponderings, shone<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA forehead, sight’s crypt, and large like ocean’s gaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTowards Heaven two tranquil eyes of boundless thought<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLooked into man’s and saw the god to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA shape was seen on threshold Mind, a Voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbsolute and wise in the heart’s chambers spoke:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

"0 Son of Strength who climbst creation’s peaks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo soul is thy companion in the light;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Alone thou standest at the eternal doors.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

What thou hast won is thine, but ask no more.<\/font><\/p>\n

O Spirit aspiring in an ignorant frame,<\/font><\/p>\n

O Voice arisen from the Inconscient’s world,<\/font><\/p>\n

How shalt thou speak for men whose hearts are dumb,<\/font><\/p>\n

Make purblind earth the soul’s seer-vision’s home<\/font><\/p>\n

Or lighten the burden of the senseless globe?<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I am the Mystery beyond reach of mind,<\/font><\/p>\n

I am the goal of the travail of the suns;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

My fire and sweetness are the cause of life.<\/font><\/p>\n

But too immense my danger and my joy.<\/font><\/p>\n

Awake not the immeasurable descent,<\/font><\/p>\n

Man is too weak to bear the Infinite’s weight.<\/font><\/p>\n

Truth born too soon might break the imperfect earth.<\/font><\/p>\n

Leave the all-seeing Power to hew its way:<\/font><\/p>\n

\nDeserting the fierce labour of the worlds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAloof from beings, lost in the Alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHow shall thy mighty spirit brook repose<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhile Death is still unconquered on the earth<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd Time a field of suffering and pain?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy soul was born to share the laden Force;<\/span><\/font>

Obey thy nature and fulfil thy fate:<\/font><\/p>\n

Accept the difficulty and godlike toil,

\nFor the slow-paced omniscient purpose live.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Enigma’s knot is tied in human kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA lightning from the heights that think and plan,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPloughing the air of life with vanishing trails,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMan, sole awake in an unconscious world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAspires in vain to change the cosmic dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArrived from some half-luminous Beyond<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe is a stranger in the mindless vasts;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A traveller in his oft-shifting home<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Amid the tread of many infinitudes,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has pitched a tent of life in desert Space.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeaven’s fixed regard beholds him from above,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the house of Nature a perturbing guest,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA voyager twixt Thought’s inconstant shores,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA hunter of unknown and beautiful Powers,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A nomad of the far mysterious Light,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In the wide ways a little spark of God.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Against his spirit all is in dire league,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Titan influence stops his Godward gaze.<\/font><\/p>\n

Around him hungers the unpitying Void,<\/font>

Immense implacable deities oppose.<\/font><\/p>\n

An inert Soul and a somnambulist Force<\/font><\/p>\n

Have made a world estranged from life and thought,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Dragon of the dark foundations keeps<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Unalterable the law of Chance and Death,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

On his long way through Time and Circumstance<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The grey-hued riddling nether shadow-Sphinx,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Her dreadful paws upon the swallowing sands,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Awaits him armed with the soul-slaying word:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Across his path sits the dim camp of Night.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis day is a moment in perpetual Time,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe is the prey of the minutes and the hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAssailed on earth and unassured of heaven,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDescended here unhappy and sublime,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA link between the demigod and the beast,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe knows not his own greatness nor his aim;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He has forgotten why he has come and whence;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His spirit and his members are at war;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His heights break off too low to reach the skies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis mass is buried in the animal mire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA strange antinomy is his nature’s rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA riddle of opposites is made his field:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Freedom he asks but needs to live in bonds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has need of darkness to perceive some light<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd need of grief to feel a little bliss;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

He has need of death to find a greater life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll sides he sees and turns to every call;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He has no certain light by which to walk;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

His life is a blind-man’s-buff, a hide and seek;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He seeks himself and from himself he runs;<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/font>

Meeting himself, he thinks it other than he.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways he builds, but finds no constant ground,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAlways he journeys, but nowhere arrives,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe would guide the world, himself he cannot guide,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe would save his soul, his life he cannot save.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe light his soul has brought his mind has lost,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAll he has learned is soon again in doubt;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A sun to him seems the shadow of his thoughts,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThen all is shadow again and nothing is true:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Unknowing what he does or whither he tends<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe fabricates signs of the Real in Ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has hitched his mortal error to Truth’s star.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWisdom attracts him with her luminous masks,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut never has he seen the face behind:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A giant Ignorance surrounds his lore.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Assigned to meet the cosmic mystery<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In the dumb figure of a material world,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nHis passport of entry false and his personage,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He is compelled to be what he is not,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nHe obeys the Inconscience he has come to rule<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And sinks in Matter to fulfil his soul.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Awakened from her lower driven forms<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nThe Earth-Mother gave her forces to his hands<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And painfully he guards the heavy trust;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His mind is a lost torch-bearer on her roads.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIllumining breath to think and plasm to feel,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe labours with his slow and sceptic brain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHelped by the reason’s vacillating fires,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo make his thought and will a magic door<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor knowledge to enter the darkness of the world<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd love to rule a realm of strife and hate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA mind impotent to reconcile heaven and earth<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And tied to Matter with a thousand bonds,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe lifts himself to. be a conscious god.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven when a glory of wisdom crowns his brow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen mind and spirit shed a grandiose ray<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo exalt this product of the sperm and gene,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis alchemist’s miracle from plasm and gas,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd he who shared the animal’s run and crawl<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLifts his thought-stature to the Immortal’s heights,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis life still keeps the human middle way;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His body he resigns to death and pain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAbandoning Matter, his too heavy charge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA thaumaturge sceptic of miracles,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA spirit left sterile of its occult power<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBy an unbelieving brain and credulous heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe leaves the world to end where it began:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

His work unfinished he claims a heavenly prize.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThus has he missed creation’s absolute.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHalfway he stops his star of destiny:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A vast and vain long-tried experiment,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An ill-served high conception doubtfully done,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The world’s life falters on not seeing its goal,\u2014<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A zigzag towards unknown dangerous ground<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Ever repeating its habitual walk,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Ever retreating after marches long<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And hardiest victories without sure result,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Drawn endlessly an inconclusive game.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In an ill-fitting and voluminous robe<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A radiant purpose still conceals its face,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A mighty blindness stumbles hoping on,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Feeding its strength on gifts of luminous Chance.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Because the human instrument has failed,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Godhead frustrate sleeps within its seed,<\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

A spirit entangled in the forms it made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis failure is not failure whom God leads;<\/span><\/font>

Through all the slow mysterious march goes on:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An immutable Power has made this mutable world;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A self-fulfilling transcendence treads man’s road;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The driver of the soul upon its path,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt knows its steps, its way is inevitable,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnd how shall the end be vain when God is guide?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHowever man’s mind may tire or fail his flesh,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA will prevails cancelling his conscious choice:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The goal recedes, a bourneless vastness calls<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRetreating into an immense Unknown;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There is no end to the world’s stupendous march,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere is no rest for the embodied soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt must live on, describe all Time’s huge curve.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAn Influx presses from the closed Beyond<\/span><\/p>\n

\nForbidding to him rest and earthly ease,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTill he has found himself he cannot pause.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Light there is that leads, a Power that aids;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Unmarked, unfelt it sees in him and acts:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Ignorant, he forms the All-conscient in his depths,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHuman, looks up to superhuman peaks:<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A borrower of Supernature’s gold,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He paves his road to Immortality. –<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The high gods look on man and watch and choose<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Today’s impossibles for the future’s base.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nHis transience trembles with the Eternal’s touch,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\nHis barriers cede beneath the Infinite’s tread;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Immortals have their entries in his life:<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

The Ambassadors of the Unseen draw near;<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A Splendour sullied by the mortal air,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLove passes through his heart, a wandering guest,<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Beauty surrounds him for a magic hour,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe has visits of a large revealing joy,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEnticing towards a glory ever in front<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHopes of a deathless sweetness lure and leave.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis mind is crossed by strange discovering fires,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRare intimations lift his stumbling speech<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTo a moment’s kinship with the eternal Word;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A masque of wisdom circles through his brain<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPerturbing him with glimpses half-divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHe lays his hands sometimes on the Unknown;<\/span><\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

He communes sometimes with Eternity<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A strange and grandiose symbol was his birth<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And immortality and spirit-room<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

And pure perfection and a shadowless bliss<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Are this afflicted creature’s mighty fate.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

In him the Earth-Mother sees draw near the change<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Foreshadowed in her dumb and fiery depths,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

A godhead drawn from her transmuted limbs,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

An alchemy of Heaven on Nature’s base.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Adept of the self-born unfailing line,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

<\/p>\n

Leave not the light to die the ages bore,<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Help still humanity’s blind and suffering life:<\/font><\/p>\n
