\nAPPENDIX<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n   This book is primarily intended to provide information about the proper names used
\nby Sri Aurobindo in his writings. But it may also be used as an index or concordance to
\nfind whether a certain name occurs in Sri Aurobindo’s works. Readers wishing to use the
\nbook in this way should remember the following points:<\/font><\/p>\n

\n1. Sri Aurobindo may not have used the conventional form or normal spelling of a
\nname, but instead an alternative, variant, or derivative, or else an older form that is
\nno longer in vogue.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n2. When writing about a <\/b> person (real or fictional), he may have used a pseudonym,
\nnickname, or patronymic.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n3. When writing about literary works, Sri Aurobindo may have used an abbreviated
\nform of the title, e.g. Lays, Malavica, Richard Feveral,<\/i> or a translation of the original
\ntitle, e.g. Toy Cart, The Prince, The Sacrifice of the Sikh.<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

\n4. Many variant spellings result from attempts to render the sounds of one language in
\nanother. The reader should note in particular:<\/font><\/p>\n

\n(a) North Indian languages, which are generally written in a number of related scripts,
\nare transliterated into the Roman alphabet in various ways. Many of these variants
\noccur in Sri Aurobindo, for example,<\/font><\/p>\n

\n(i) The sound "i" is represented in at least four different ways: Bharati, Bheels,
\nBannerjea, Kashi’e.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n(ii) The letter "u" sometimes takes the place of "a" in the middle of the name,
\nand occasionally also at the beginning, e.g. Dimbhuc, (\/mballa.
\n(iii) "oo" or "ou" is occasionally used in place of "u", e.g. Arjoona, Vaicountha.
\n(iv) "aa" is occasionally used in place of "a", e.g. Aacrity, Sanoaman.
\n(v) Following a habit of Latin-educated scholars, Sri Aurobindo often used the
\nletter "c" for the sound usually transliterated "k", e.g. Acrur, Calindi, Sanscrit.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n(b) The peculiarities of Bengali pronunciation have affected spellings in various ways:<\/font><\/p>\n

\n(i) "o" sometimes takes the place of "a", e^. Soroyu, Ocroor
\n(ii) "b" sometimes takes the place <\/b> of "v" , e.g. Bibhishan
\n(iii) "s" sometimes takes the place of "sh", e.g. Sudra, Parasurama
\n(iv) "kh" sometimes takes the place of "ksh", e.g. Ofe\/iaya<\/font><\/p>\n

\n5. One should also remember that Bengali surnames are spelled in many different ways,
\ne.g. Banerjea, Banerjee, Banerji, Bannerjee, Bannerji, Bonerji, Bonnerji, etc.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nBesides keeping the above points in mind one may also make use of the following
\ntable. Here, under "For"<\/i> are given most of the names that are dealt with in this book but
\nnot listed in their conventional or normal form. Under "See"<\/i> against each of these names
