When<br \/>\none takes up the Yoga and wishes to consecrate&nbsp;<br \/>\none&#8217;s life to the Divine, these ordinary motives of<br \/>\nthe vital being have no longer their full and free<br \/>\nplay; they have to be replaced by another, a mainly<br \/>\npsychic and spiritual motive, which will enable the<br \/>\nsadhak to work with the same force as before, no<br \/>\nlonger for himself, but for the Divine, If the<br \/>\nordinary vital motives or vital force can no longer<br \/>\nact freely and yet are not replaced by something&nbsp;<br \/>\nelse, then the push or force put into the work may<br \/>\ndecline or the power to command success may no<br \/>\nlonger be there. For the sincere sadhak the difficulty <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-601 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">can only be temporary; but he has to see<br \/>\nthe defect in his consciousness or his attitude and<br \/>\nto remove it. Then the Divine Power itself will<br \/>\nact through him and use his capacity and vital<br \/>\nforce for its ends. In your case, it is the psychic<br \/>\nbeing and a part of the mind that have drawn you<br \/>\nto the Yoga and were predisposed to it, but the vital<br \/>\nnature or at least a large part of it has not yet put<br \/>\nitself into line with the psychic movement. There<br \/>\nis not as yet the full and undivided consecration of&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe active vital nature. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The signs of the consecration of the vital in<br \/>\naction are these among others: <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The feeling (not merely the idea or the aspiration)<br \/>\nthat all the life and the work are the Mother&#8217;s and<br \/>\na strong joy of the vital nature in this consecration<br \/>\nand surrender. A consequent calm content and<br \/>\ndisappearance of egoistic attachment to the work<br \/>\nand its personal results, but at the same time a great<br \/>\njoy in the work and in the use of the capacities for<br \/>\nthe divine purpose. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The feeling that the Divine Force is working<br \/>\nbehind one&#8217;s actions and leading at every moment.<br \/>\nA persistent faith which no circumstance or<br \/>\nevent can break. If difficulties occur, they raise not<br \/>\nmental doubts or an inert acquiescence, but the<br \/>\nfirm belief that, with sincere consecration<b> <\/b>   the<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-602 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Divine Shakti will remove the difficulties, and<br \/>\nwith this belief a greater turning to her and<br \/>\ndependence on her for that purpose. When there is<br \/>\nfull faith and consecration, there comes also a<br \/>\nreceptivity to the Force which makes one do the<br \/>\nright thing and take the right means and then circumstances<br \/>\nadapt themselves and the result is visible. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">To arrive at this condition the important thing<br \/>\nis a persistent aspiration, call and self-offering and<br \/>\na will to reject all in oneself or around that stands<br \/>\nin the way. Difficulties there will always be at<br \/>\nthe beginning and for as long a time as is necessary<br \/>\nfor the change; but they are bound to disappear<br \/>\nif they are met by a settled faith, will and patience.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Practice_of_the_Gitas_Yoga_of_Works\">Practice of the Gita&#8217;s Yoga of Works<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">(1)<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IF I have not written to you, it is because I could<br \/>\nnot add anything to what I had already written<br \/>\nbefore to you. I cannot promise that within a<br \/>\ngiven time you will have a result which will enable<br \/>\nyou either to go out into the world with a stronger<br \/>\nspirit or succeed in the Yoga. For the Yoga you <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-603 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">yourself say that you have not yet the whole mind<br \/>\nfor it and without the whole mind success is hardly<br \/>\npossible in sadhana. For the other, it is hardly the<br \/>\nfunction of sadhana to prepare a man for ordinary<br \/>\nlife in the world. There is one thing only that<br \/>\ncould work in a direction which would help you to<br \/>\nsomething which is not that, but still not the whole<br \/>\nYoga for which you intimate that you are not<br \/>\nwholly ready. It is if you get the spirit of the Yoga<br \/>\nof works as it is indicated in the Gita\u2014forget<br \/>\nyourself and your miseries in the aspiration to a<br \/>\nlarger consciousness, feel the greater Force working<br \/>\nin the world and make yourself an instrument for<br \/>\na work to be done, however small it may be. Reading also can be made<br \/>\nhelpful.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">1933 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Action_and_Introspective_Meditation\">Action and Introspective Meditation<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">You need not have qualms about the time you give<br \/>\nto action and creative work. Those who have an<br \/>\nexpansive creative vital or a vital made for action<br \/>\nare usually at their best when the vital is not held<br \/>\nback from its movement and they can develop<br \/>\nfaster by it than by introspective meditation. All <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-605 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">that is needed is that the action should be dedicated,<br \/>\nso that they may grow by it more and more prepared<br \/>\nto feel and follow the Divine Force when it<br \/>\nmoves them. It is a mistake to think that to live<br \/>\nin introspective meditation all the time is invariably<br \/>\nthe best or the only way of Yoga.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Concentration_in_Work_and_Meditation\">Concentration in Work and Meditation<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IT is not meditation (thinking with the mind) but a<br \/>\nconcentration or turning of the consciousness that is<br \/>\nimportant,\u2014and that can happen in work, in writing,<br \/>\nin any kind of action as well as in sitting down<br \/>\nto contemplate.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">6-3-1933 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Opening_and_Surrender_to_the_Mother_through_Work\">Opening and Surrender to the Mother through<br \/>\nWork<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THE Mother does not think that it is good to give<b><br \/>\n<\/b>up<b> <\/b>all work and only read and meditate. Work is part<b><br \/>\n<\/b>of<b> <\/b>the Yoga and it gives the best opportunity for calling <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-606 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">down the Presence, the Light and the Power into the<br \/>\nvital and its activities; it increases also the field and<br \/>\nthe opportunity of surrender. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is not enough to remember that the work is the<br \/>\nMother&#8217;s\u2014and the results also. You must learn to<br \/>\nfeel the Mother&#8217;s forces behind you and to open to<br \/>\nthe inspiration and the guidance. Always to remember<br \/>\nby an effort of the mind is too difficult; but if<br \/>\nyou get into the consciousness in which you feel<br \/>\nalways the Mother&#8217;s force in you or supporting you,<br \/>\nthat is the true thing. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Mother does not usually give specific advice<br \/>\nsuch as you ask for in regard to the Insurance Company.<br \/>\nYou must learn to get the true inspiration in<br \/>\nthe mind&#8217;s silence.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">18-8-1932 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><a name=\"Conditions_of_Perfect_Service\">Conditions of Perfect Service<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Efface the stamp of ego from the heart and let the<br \/>\nlove of the Mother take its place. In<br \/>\norder to be unattached one must be unattached<br \/>\neverywhere, in the mental, vital, physical action<br \/>\nand not only in the silent soul somewhere inside. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Detachment_and_Action_of_Prakriti\">Detachment and Action of Prakriti<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IN the liberated state it is not the inner Purusha<br \/>\nonly that remains detached\u2014the inner Purusha is<br \/>\nalways detached, only one is not conscious of it<br \/>\nin the ordinary state. It is the Prakriti also that<br \/>\nis not disturbed by the action of the gunas or<br \/>\nattached to it\u2014the mind, the vital, the physical<br \/>\n(whatever Prakriti) begin to get the same quietude,<br \/>\nunperturbed peace and detachment as the Purusha,<br \/>\nbut it is a quietude, not a cessation of all action.<br \/>\nIt is quietude in action itself. If it were not so, my<br \/>\nstatement in the <i>Arya<\/i> that there can be a desireless<br \/>\nor liberated action on which I found the possibility<br \/>\nof a free (mukta) action would be false. The whole <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-624 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">being, Purusha-Prakriti, becomes detached (having<br \/>\nno desire or attachment) even in the action of<br \/>\nthe gunas. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The outer being is also detached\u2014the whole<br \/>\nbeing is without desire or attachment and still action is possible, action<br \/>\nwithout desire is possible,<br \/>\naction without attachment is possible, action without<br \/>\nego is possible.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">22-1-1936 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><a name=\"Action_and_Prakriti\">Action and Prakriti<\/a><\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">You seem to think that action, and Prakriti are the<br \/>\nsame thing and where there is no action there can<br \/>\nbe no Prakriti! Purusha and Prakriti are separate<br \/>\npowers of the being. It is not that Purusha=quiescence&nbsp; and Prakriti=action, so that when all is<br \/>\nquiescent there is no Prakriti and when all is active<br \/>\nthere is no Purusha. The gunas<br \/>\nare an action of the Force, they are in the Force<br \/>\nitself. That is the usual<br \/>\nthing. If a man is running fast, you<br \/>\ncan say of him, &quot;He is running with great energy&quot;.<br \/>\nDo you think it would mean the same if you said, &quot;He is running with great<br \/>\nconsciousness&quot;? Consciousness is that which is aware of things\u2014energy is a<br \/>\nforce put in action which does things. Consciousness<br \/>\nmay have energy and keep it in or put it out, but<br \/>\nthat does not mean that it has to go out when the<br \/>\nenergy goes out and that it can&#8217;t stand back and<br \/>\nobserve the energy in action. The Divine has been described as Being,<br \/>\nConsciousness, Ananda, even as a Consciousness<br \/>\n(Chaitanya), as putting out a force or energy,<br \/>\nShakti that creates worlds. The mind is a modified<br \/>\nconsciousness that puts forth a mental energy. But<br \/>\nthe Divine can stand back from his energy and<br \/>\nobserve it at its work, it can be the Witness Purusha<br \/>\nwatching the works of Prakriti. Even the mind<br \/>\ncan do that\u2014a man can stand back in his mind-<br \/>\nconsciousness and watch the mental energy doing<br \/>\nthings, thinking, planning, etc.; all introspection is based upon the fact that<br \/>\none can so divide oneself into a consciousness that observes and an energy that<br \/>\nacts. These are quite elementary things supposed to be known to everybody. Anybody can do<br \/>\nthat merely by a little practice; anybody who<br \/>\nobserves his own thoughts, feelings, actions, has<br \/>\nbegun doing it already.
