What you have to aspire for<br \/>\nmost is the improved quality of the recipient consciousness<br \/>\nin you, discrimination in the mind, the<br \/>\nunattached impersonal Witness look on all that goes<br \/>\non in you and around you, purity in the vital,<br \/>\ncalm equanimity, enduring patience, absence of<br \/>\npride and the sense of greatness\u2014and more especially,<br \/>\nthe development of the psychic being in you\u2014<br \/>\nsurrender, self-giving, psychic humility, devotion.<br \/>\nIt is a consciousness made up of these things, cast<br \/>\nin this mould, that can bear without breaking,<br \/>\nstumbling or deviation into error the rush of lights,<br \/>\npower and experiences from the supraphysical<br \/>\nplanes. EXPERIENCES<b> <\/b> OF THE INNER PLANES<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\nSigns of the Opening of the Inner Consciousness<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THE sounds of bells and the seeing of lights and<br \/>\ncolours are signs of the opening of the inner<br \/>\nconsciousness which brings with it an opening also<br \/>\nto sights and sounds of other planes than the physical.<br \/>\nSome of these things like the sound of bells, crickets,<br \/>\netc. seem even to help the opening. The Upanishad<br \/>\nspeaks of them as <i>brahmavyaktikara&#772;n&#803;i yoge.<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The lights represent forces\u2014or sometimes a<br \/>\nformed light like that you saw may be the light of<br \/>\na being of the supraphysical plane. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">September 1934 <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"First Result of the Awakening of the Inner Being\"><\/a>First Result of the Awakening of the Inner Being<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THERE is a stage in the sadhana in which the inner<br \/>\nbeing begins to awake. Often the first result is<br \/>\nthe condition made up of the following elements: <\/font><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">A sort of witness attitude in which the inner consciousness looks at all that happens as a spectator or observer, observing things but taking no active interest or pleasure in them.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">A state of neutral equanimity in which there is neither joy nor sorrow, only quietude.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-280 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">A sense of being something separate from all that happens, observing it but not part of it.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">An absence of attachment to things, people or events.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It seems as if this condition were trying to come<br \/>\nin you; but it is still imperfect. For instance, in this<br \/>\ncondition (1) there should be no disgust or impatience<br \/>\nor anger when people talk, only indifference<br \/>\nand an inner peace and silence. Also, (2) there<br \/>\nshould not be a mere neutral quiet and indifference,<br \/>\nbut a positive sense of calm, detachment and peace.<br \/>\nAgain, (3) there should be no going out of the body<br \/>\nso that you do not know what is happening or<br \/>\nwhat you are doing. There may be a sense of not<br \/>\nbeing the body but something else,\u2014that is good;&nbsp;<br \/>\nbut there should be a perfect awareness of all that<br \/>\nis going on in or around you. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Moreover, this condition even when it is perfect<br \/>\nis only a transitional stage\u2014it is intended to bring<br \/>\na certain state of freedom and liberation. But in<br \/>\nthat peace there must come the feeling of the Divine<br \/>\nPresence, the sense of the Mother&#8217;s power working<br \/>\non you, the joy or Ananda. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">If you can concentrate in the heart as well as<br \/>\nin the head, then these things can more easily come.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">March 1933 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-281 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Breaking up of the Surface Being into the Inner Consciousness\"><\/a>Breaking<b> <\/b> up of the Surface Being into the<br \/>\nInner Consciousness<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THERE is no need of the question. At this stage<br \/>\nyou have only to watch the experiences and observe<br \/>\ntheir significance. It is only when the experiences<br \/>\nare in the vital realm that some are likely to<b><br \/>\n<\/b>be<b> <\/b>false formations. These of which you write are<br \/>\nsimply the common experiences of an opening Yogic<br \/>\nconsciousness and they have to be understood, simply. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Here it is the breaking up of the small surface<br \/>\nvital into the largeness of the true or inner vital<br \/>\nbeing which can at once open to the Higher Consciousness,<br \/>\nits power, light and Ananda. There is<br \/>\nalso begun a similar breaking of the small physical<br \/>\nmind and sense into the wideness of the inner<br \/>\nphysical consciousness. It is possible for one who<br \/>\nhas trained his faculties to enter into touch with<br \/>\nphysical things although he is moving about in the<br \/>\nvital body, to see and sense them accurately, even<br \/>\nto act on them and physically move them. But the<br \/>\nordinary sadhaka who has no knowledge or organised<br \/>\nexperience or training in these things cannot<br \/>\ndo it. He must understand that the vital plane is<br \/>\ndifferent from the physical and that things that<br \/>\nhappen there are not physical happenings, though,<br \/>\nif they are of the right kind and properly understood<br \/>\nand used, they may have a meaning and value for<br \/>\nthe earth life. But also the vital consciousness is<br \/>\nfull of false formations and many confusions and<br \/>\nit is not safe to move among them without knowledge<br \/>\nand without a direct protection and guidance.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">9-10-1927 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-283 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Precautions for Avoiding Dangers in the Vital Worlds\"><\/a>Precautions for Avoiding Dangers in the Vital Worlds<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">YOUR three experiences related in your letter mean<br \/>\nthat you are going out in your vital body into<br \/>\nthe vital worlds and meeting the beings and formations<br \/>\nof these worlds. The old man of the temple<br \/>\nand the girls you saw are hostile beings of the<br \/>\nvital plane. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is better not to go in this way unless one has<br \/>\nthe protection of some one (physically present)<br \/>\nwho has knowledge and power on the vital world.<br \/>\nAs there is no one there who can do this for you,<br \/>\nyou should draw back from this movement. Aspire<br \/>\nfor perfect surrender, calm, peace, light, consciousness<br \/>\nand strength in the mind and the heart. When<br \/>\nthe mental being and the psychic being are thus<br \/>\nopen, luminous and surrendered, then the vital<br \/>\ncan open and receive the same illumination. Till<br \/>\nthen premature adventures on the vital plane are<br \/>\nnot advisable. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">If the movement cannot be stopped, then observe<br \/>\nthe following instructions: <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Never allow any fear to enter into you. Face&nbsp;<br \/>\n\tall you meet and see in this world with detachment&nbsp;<br \/>\n\tand courage. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ask for our protection before you sleep or meditate. Use our names when you are attacked or tempted.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do not indulge in this world in any kind of<br \/>\n\tsympathy for the old man in the temple or accept such suggestions, e.g.,<br \/>\n\tthat he was your spiritual preceptor,<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n\t<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-284<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">which was obviously false since you could have no other spiritual preceptor than us. It was because of this sympathy and the accepted suggestion that he was able to go inside you and create the pain you felt.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\" align=\"justify\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do not allow any foreign personality to enter into you, only the Light, Power, etc. from above.<br \/>\n\t<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\" align=\"justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Experiences of Withdrawal into Inner Planes\"><\/a>Experiences of Withdrawal into Inner Planes<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">B&#8217;s experiences are those which usually attend the<br \/>\nwithdrawal from the outer consciousness into an<br \/>\ninner plane of experience. The feeling of coldness<br \/>\nof the body in the first is one of the signs\u2014like the<br \/>\nimmobility and stiffness of D&#8217;s experience\u2014that<br \/>\nthe consciousness is withdrawing from the outer<br \/>\nor physical sheath and retiring inside. The crystallisation<br \/>\nwas the form in which he felt the organisation<br \/>\nof an inner consciousness which could receive<br \/>\nat once firmly and freely from above. The crystals at<br \/>\nonce indicate organised formation and a firm transparence<br \/>\nin which the greater vision and experience<br \/>\ndescending from the higher planes could be clearly<br \/>\nreflected. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-285 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">As for the other experience, his rejection of the&nbsp;<br \/>\nwaking consciousness evidently had the result of<br \/>\nthrowing him into an inner awareness in which<b><br \/>\n<\/b>he<b> <\/b>began to have contact with the supraphysical planes.<br \/>\nWhat was meant by the sea of red colour and stars<br \/>\ndepends on the character of the red colour. If it<br \/>\nwas crimson, what he saw was the sea of the physical<br \/>\nconsciousness and physical life as it is represented<br \/>\nto the inner symbolic vision; if it was purple red,<br \/>\nthen it was the sea of the vital consciousness and<br \/>\nthe vital life-force. Perhaps, if he had not stopped<br \/>\nhis sense of the Mother&#8217;s presence, it would have<br \/>\nbeen better,\u2014he should rather, if he can, take it<br \/>\nwith him into the inner planes, then he would have<br \/>\nhad no occasion to fear. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In any case, if he wants to go into the inner consciousness<br \/>\nand move in the inner planes\u2014which will<br \/>\ninevitably happen if he shuts off the waking consciousness<br \/>\nin his meditation\u2014he must cast away fear.<br \/>\nProbably he expected to get the silence or the touch<br \/>\nof the Divine Consciousness by following out the<br \/>\nsuggestion of the Gita. But the silence or the touch<br \/>\nof the Divine Consciousness can be equally and for<br \/>\nsome more easily got in the waking meditation<br \/>\nthrough the Mother&#8217;s presence and the descent<br \/>\nfrom above. The inward movement, however, is<br \/>\nprobably unavoidable and he should try to understand<br \/>\nand, not shrinking or afraid, to go to it with <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-286 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">the same confidence and faith in the Mother as he<br \/>\nhas in the waking meditation. His dreams are, of<br \/>\ncourse, experiences on the inner (vital) plane, I<br \/>\nneed not repeat the explanation I have already<br \/>\ngiven to D. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">P.S. One comes up to the surface with what one<br \/>\nhas gained in the depths to change it. It may be<br \/>\nyour need to go in again and find it difficult to<br \/>\nmake the movement back quickly. The experiences<br \/>\nof the vital plane (in which there is much imagination<br \/>\nand fantasy) are useful for opening up the<br \/>\nconsciousness; but it is when they are replaced by<br \/>\nthe spiritual and psychic consciousness that there<br \/>\nis the beginning of the true progress. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The difficulty of keeping the consciousness at<br \/>\nnight happens to most\u2014it is because the night is<br \/>\nthe time of sleep and relaxation and the subconscient<br \/>\ncomes up. The true consciousness comes at first in<br \/>\nthe waking state or in meditation, it takes possession<br \/>\nof the mental, the vital, the conscious physical, but<br \/>\nthe subconscious vital and physical remain obscure<br \/>\nand this obscurity comes up when there is sleep or<br \/>\nan inert relaxation. Knowledge and Ignorance are in their<br \/>\nnature subjective. But from the personal point<br \/>\nof view, the Force of Ignorance may manifest as<br \/>\nsomething objective outside oneself so that even<br \/>\nwhen one has Knowledge for oneself one cannot<br \/>\nremove the environing Ignorance.
