The Guru&#8217;s touch or<br \/>\ngrace may open something, but the difficulties<br \/>\nhave always to be worked out still. What is true<br \/>\nis that if there is complete surrender which, implies<br \/>\nthe prominence of the psychic, these difficulties<br \/>\nare no longer felt as a binder or obstacle but only<br \/>\nas superficial imperfections which the working<br \/>\nof the grace will remove.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">26-6-1936 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><a name=\"Difficulties and Victory\"><\/a>Difficulties and Victory<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">You must throw all that away. The existence of difficulties is a known<br \/>\nthing in the Yoga. I do not mean<br \/>\nthat these movements are not to be rejected\u2014but<br \/>\nall the energy should not be used solely for rejection.<br \/>\nIt must also be directed to the positive replacement <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-365 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">of them by the higher consciousness. But<br \/>\nthough this may succeed in some cases, it is not<br \/>\neven in the mental and vital a safe or certain method.<br \/>\nExhaustion, of course, is impossible; the things<br \/>\nthat create the difficulties are cosmic forces, forces<br \/>\nof the cosmic Ignorance and cannot be exhausted.<br \/>\nPeople talk of their getting exhausted because after a<br \/>\ntime they lose strength and dwindle, for that is possible<br \/>\nonly by force of rejection by the Purusha and by<br \/>\nforce of divine intervention aiding this rejection<br \/>\nand dissolving or destroying the difficulty each<br \/>\ntime it shows its face. Even so, the getting rid of<br \/>\ndifficulties in a lump seldom works; something<br \/>\nremains and returns until suddenly there comes a<br \/>\ndivine intervention which is final or else a change<br \/>\nof consciousness which makes the return of the<br \/>\ndifficulty impossible. The physical nature<br \/>\nis a thing of habits; it is out of habit that it responds<br \/>\nto the forces of illness; one has to get into it the<br \/>\ncontrary habit of responding to the Divine Force<br \/>\nonly. One should then seek<br \/>\nout this weakness in oneself and correct it. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">When there is an attack from the human instruments<br \/>\nof adverse forces, one should try to overcome<br \/>\nit not in a spirit of personal hatred or anger or<br \/>\nwounded egoism, but with a calm spirit of strength<br \/>\nand equanimity and a call to the Divine Force to<br \/>\nact. Success or failure lies with the Divine. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In dealing with others there is a way of speaking<br \/>\nand doing which gives most offence and opens<br \/>\none most to misunderstanding and there is also<br \/>\na way which is quiet and firm but conciliatory to<br \/>\nthose who can be conciliated\u2014all who are not<br \/>\nabsolutely of bad will. It is better to use the latter<br \/>\nthan the former. How is it to be dealt with\u2014for such<br \/>\narrests are inevitably frequent enough, not only for<br \/>\nyou, but for everyone who is a seeker; one might<br \/>\nalmost say that every step forward is followed by an<br \/>\narrest\u2014at least, that is a very common, if not a<br \/>\nuniversal experience. It is to be dealt with by becoming<br \/>\nalways more quiet, more firm in the will to go<br \/>\nthrough, by opening oneself more and more so that<br \/>\nany obstructing non-receptivity in the nature may&nbsp;<br \/>\ndiminish or disappear, by an affirmation of faith<br \/>\neven in the midst of the obscurity, faith in the presence<br \/>\nof a Power that is working behind the cloud<br \/>\nand the veil, in the guidance of the Guru, by an&nbsp;<br \/>\nobservation of oneself to find any cause of the arrest,<br \/>\nnot in a spirit of depression or discouragement but<br \/>\nwith the will to find out and remove it. This is the<br \/>\nonly right attitude and, if one is persistent in taking<br \/>\nit, the periods of arrest are not abolished,\u2014for that&nbsp;<br \/>\ncannot be at this stage,\u2014but greatly shortened and<br \/>\nlightened in their incidence. Sometimes these arrests<br \/>\nare periods, long or short, of assimilation or unseen<br \/>\npreparation, their appearance of sterile immobility<br \/>\nis deceptive: in that case, with the right attitude, one <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-377 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">can after a time, by opening, by observation, by<br \/>\naccumulated experience, begin to feel, to get some<br \/>\ninkling of what is being prepared or done. Sometimes<br \/>\nit is a period of true obstruction in which the<br \/>\nPower at work has to deal with the obstacles in the<br \/>\nway, obstacles in oneself, obstacles of the opposing<br \/>\ncosmic forces or any other or of all together, and this<br \/>\nkind of arrest may be long or short according to the<br \/>\nmagnitude or obstinacy or complexity of the impediments<br \/>\nthat are met. But here, too, the right attitude<br \/>\ncan alleviate or shorten and, if persistently taken,<br \/>\nhelp to a more radical removal of the difficulties and<br \/>\ngreatly diminish the necessity of complete arrests hereafter. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">On the contrary, an attitude of depression or&nbsp;<br \/>\nunfaith in the help or the guidance or in the certitude<br \/>\nof the victory of the guiding Power, a shutting up of<br \/>\nyourself in the sense of the difficulties impedes the<br \/>\nrecovery, prolongs the difficulties, helps the obstructions<br \/>\nto recur with force instead of progressively<br \/>\ndiminishing in their incidence. The struggle is then transferred to the psychological<br \/>\nplane, where it will be much easier to fight<br \/>\nthe matter out. I do not deny that there will be<br \/>\ndifficulty for some time; but if there is the control<br \/>\nof action, the control of thought and feeling is bound<br \/>\nto come. It is this<br \/>\nold vital nature, which you were accepting and<br \/>\nindulging, that made you go wrong and stood in the<br \/>\nway of your progress. It is when the desire and<br \/>\nrestlessness of the vital are rejected that the psychic<br \/>\nin you comes forward and then the vital itself changes<br \/>\nand feels full of the joy and the nearness. When<br \/>\nthe old unhappy and restless vital comes up again,<br \/>\nyou feel yourself unfit, without pleasure in anything.<br \/>\nWhat you have to do when this returns is not to<br \/>\naccept it, to call in the Mother&#8217;s nearness again and<br \/>\nlet the psychic being grow in you. If you do that<br \/>\npersistently, rejecting restlessness and desire, the<br \/>\nvital part of you will change and become fit for the<br \/>\nsadhana.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">11-4-1932 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-380 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"The Divine Possibility of the Inner Being and\"><\/a>The Divine Possibility of the Inner Being and <\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i>the<br \/>\nDifficulties of the Exterior Vital Self<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THERE are two or three things that I think it necessary<br \/>\nto say to you about your spiritual life and your<br \/>\ndifficulties. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">First, I should like you to get rid of the idea that<br \/>\nthat which causes the difficulties is so much a part of<br \/>\nyour self that a true inner life is impossible for you.<br \/>\nThe inner life is always possible if there is present in<br \/>\nthe nature, however much covered over by other<br \/>\nthings, a divine possibility through which the soul<br \/>\ncan manifest itself and build up its own true form in<br \/>\nthe mind and life,\u2014a portion of the Divine. In you<br \/>\nthis divine possibility exists in a marked and exceptional<br \/>\ndegree. There is in you an inner being of<br \/>\nspontaneous light, intuitive vision, harmony and<br \/>\ncreative beauty which has shown itself unmistakably<br \/>\nevery time it has been able to throw off the<br \/>\nclouds that gather in your vital nature. It is this<br \/>\nthat the Mother has always tried to make grow in<br \/>\nyou and bring to the front. When one has that<br \/>\nin oneself, there is no ground for despair, no just<br \/>\nreason for any talk of impossibility. If you could<br \/>\nonce firmly accept this as your true self, (as indeed<br \/>\nit is, for the inner being is your true self and the<br \/>\nexternal, to which the cause of the difficulties <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-381 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">belongs, is always something acquired and impermanent<br \/>\nand can be changed,) and if you could make<br \/>\nits development your settled and persistent aim in life,<br \/>\nthen the path would be clear and your spiritual<br \/>\nfuture not only a strong possibility but a certitude. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It very often happens that when there is an exceptional<br \/>\npower like this in the nature, there is found<br \/>\nin the exterior being some contrary element which<br \/>\nopens it to a quite opposite influence. It is this that&nbsp;<br \/>\nmakes the endeavour after a spiritual life so often&nbsp;<br \/>\na difficult struggle: but the existence of this kind<br \/>\nof contradiction even in an intense form does not<br \/>\nmake that life impossible. Doubt, struggle, efforts<br \/>\nand failures, lapses, alternations of happy and<br \/>\nunhappy or good and bad conditions, states of light<br \/>\nand states of darkness are the common lot of human<br \/>\nbeings. They are not created by Yoga or by the&nbsp;<br \/>\neffort after perfection; only, in Yoga one becomes<br \/>\nconscious of their movements and their causes<br \/>\ninstead of feeling them blindly, and<b> <\/b> in the end one<br \/>\nmakes one&#8217;s way out of them into a clearer and<br \/>\nhappier consciousness. The ordinary life remains<br \/>\nto the last a series of troubles and struggles, but the<br \/>\nsadhak of the Yoga comes out of the trouble and<br \/>\nstruggle to a ground of fundamental serenity which&nbsp;<br \/>\nsuperficial disturbances may still touch but cannot&nbsp;<br \/>\ndestroy, and, finally, all disturbance ceases altogether. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-382 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Even the experience which so alarms you, of<br \/>\nstates of consciousness in which you say and do<br \/>\nthings contrary to your true will, is not a reason<br \/>\nfor despair. It is a common experience in one form<br \/>\nor another of all who try to rise above their ordinary<br \/>\nnature. Not only those who practise Yoga, but<br \/>\nreligious men and even those who seek only a<br \/>\nmoral control and self-improvement are confronted<br \/>\nwith this difficulty. And here again it is not the<br \/>\nYoga or the effort after perfection that creates this<br \/>\ncondition,\u2014there are contradictory elements in<br \/>\nhuman nature and in every human being through<br \/>\nwhich he is made to act in a way which his better<br \/>\nmind disapproves. This happens to everybody, to<br \/>\nthe most ordinary men in the most ordinary life.<br \/>\nIt only becomes marked and obvious to our minds<br \/>\nwhen we try to rise above our ordinary external<br \/>\nselves, because then we can see that it is the lower<br \/>\nelements which are being made to revolt consciously<br \/>\nagainst the higher will. There then seems to be for a<br \/>\ntime a division in the nature, because the true being<br \/>\nand all that supports it stand back and separate from<br \/>\nthese lower elements. At one time the true being<br \/>\noccupies the field of the nature, at another the<br \/>\nlower nature used by some contrary Force pushes<br \/>\nit back and seizes the ground,\u2014and this we now<br \/>\nsee, while formerly the thing happened but the <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-383 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">nature of the happening was not clear to us. If<br \/>\nthere is the firm will to progress, this division is<br \/>\noverpassed and in the unified nature, unified around<br \/>\nthat will, there may be other difficulties, but this<br \/>\nkind of discord and struggle will disappear. I have<br \/>\nwritten so much on this point because I think you<br \/>\nhave been given the wrong idea that it is the Yoga<br \/>\nwhich creates this struggle and also that this contradiction<br \/>\nor division in the nature is the sign of an<br \/>\nunfitness or impossibility to go through to the end.<br \/>\nBoth ideas are quite incorrect and things will be<br \/>\neasier if you cast them out of your consciousness<br \/>\naltogether.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">But it is true that in your case as in others, this<br \/>\ncontradiction has been given a special and very<br \/>\ndiscomforting kind of intensity by a hereditary<br \/>\nweakness of the nervous parts which has always<br \/>\nshown itself in you by fits of despondency, gloom,<br \/>\nunrest and self-tormenting darkness and spoiled for<br \/>\nyou the savour of life. Your mistake is to think<br \/>\nthat this is something to which you are bound and<br \/>\nfrom which you cannot escape, a fate which makes<br \/>\na spiritual change of your nature impossible. I<br \/>\nhave seen other families afflicted by this kind of<br \/>\nhereditary nervous weakness accompanying very<br \/>\noften exceptional gifts of intelligence or artistic<br \/>\ncapacity or spiritual possibilities. One or two may <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-384 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">have succumbed to it, like<b> <\/b> X, but others, sometimes<br \/>\nafter a period of acute disturbance, overcame the<br \/>\nperturbations caused by this weakness; either it<br \/>\ndisappeared or it took some minor and innocuous<br \/>\nform which did not interfere with the development<br \/>\nof the life and its capacities. Why then despair of<br \/>\nyourself or fix without any true cause the conviction<br \/>\nthat you cannot change and this thing will always<br \/>\nbe there? This despondency, this adverse conviction<br \/>\nis the real danger for you; it prevents you<br \/>\nfrom making a quiet and settled resolution and a<br \/>\npermanent effective effort; because of it the return<br \/>\nof this darker condition makes you quickly yield<br \/>\nand allow the adverse external Force which uses<br \/>\nthis defect to play and do its will with you. It is<br \/>\nthis false idea that makes more than half the<br \/>\ntrouble. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There is no true reason why you should not<br \/>\novercome this defect of your external being as<br \/>\nmany others have done. It is only a part of your<br \/>\nvital nature that is affected, even though it often<br \/>\noverclouds the rest; the other parts of your being<br \/>\ncan be easily made the fit instruments of the divine<br \/>\npossibility of which I have spoken. Especially, you<br \/>\nhave a clear and fine intelligence which, when<br \/>\nrightly used, becomes a ready instrument of the<br \/>\nlight and can be of great use to you in overcoming <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-385 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">this vital weakness. And this divine possibility,<br \/>\nthis truth of your inner being, if you accept it, can<br \/>\nof itself make certain your liberation and the change&nbsp;<br \/>\nof your external nature. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Accept this divine possibility in you; have faith<br \/>\nin your inner being and its spiritual destiny. Make<br \/>\nits development as a portion of the Divine your<br \/>\naim in life,\u2014for a great and serious aim in life is<br \/>\na most powerful help towards getting rid of this<br \/>\nkind of disturbing or disabling nervous weakness;&nbsp;<br \/>\nit gives firmness, balance, a strong support to the<br \/>\nwhole being and a powerful reason for the will to<br \/>\nact. Accept too the help we can give you, not<br \/>\nshutting yourself against it by disbelief, despair or<br \/>\nunfounded revolt. At present you cannot prevail<br \/>\nbecause you have not fixed in yourself a    faith, an<br \/>\naim, a settled confidence; the black mood has<br \/>\nbeen able to cloud your whole consciousness. But<br \/>\nif you have fixed this faith in you and can cling to<br \/>\nit, then the cloud will not be able to fix itself for<br \/>\nany long period, the inner being will be able to come<br \/>\nto your help. It is not in you alone that this part feels<br \/>\nand acts like that, it is in almost everybody. If that<br \/>\nwere the only thing in you or the others, then,<br \/>\nindeed, there would be no possibility of Yoga. But<br \/>\nthough it is strong, it is not the whole\u2014there is a<br \/>\npsychic being and a mind and heart influenced<br \/>\nand enlightened by it which has other feelings and<br \/>\nanother vision of things and aim in sadhana. It is tamasic and does<br \/>\nnot want to change, does not want to believe unless<br \/>\nit can be done by reassuring the vital ego. The other possible<br \/>\ncause is a plunge into a too obscure and subconscient<br \/>\nsleep\u2014that has sometimes the effect you describe.<br \/>\nIn any case, do not allow yourself to be discouraged<br \/>\nwhen these things happen; they are common phenomena<br \/>\none cannot fail to meet with as soon as one<br \/>\nbegins to penetrate behind the veil and touch the<br \/>\noccult causes of the psychological happenings within<br \/>\nus. One has to learn the causes, note and face the<br \/>\ndifficulty and always react\u2014never accept the depression<br \/>\nthrown on one, but react as you did the first<br \/>\ntime. If there are always forces around which are<br \/>\nconcerned to depress and discourage, there are always<br \/>\nforces above and around us which we can draw<br \/>\nupon,\u2014draw into ourselves to restore, to fill up again<br \/>\nwith strength and faith and joy and the power<br \/>\nthat perseveres and conquers. It is really a habit<br \/>\nthat one has to get of opening to these helpful<br \/>\nforces and either passively receiving them or actively<br \/>\ndrawing upon them\u2014for one can do either. To give them too great<br \/>\nan importance increases their importance and their<br \/>\npower to multiply themselves, gives them, as it were,<br \/>\nconfidence in themselves and the habit of coming. To<br \/>\nface them with equanimity\u2014if one cannot manage a<br \/>\ncheerful persistence against them of confident and<br \/>\nresolute will\u2014diminishes, on the contrary, their<br \/>\nimportance and effect and in the end, though<br \/>\nnot at once, gets rid of their persistence and recurrence.<br \/>\nIt is therefore a principle in Yoga to recognise<br \/>\nthe determining power of what is within us\u2014for<br \/>\nthat is the deeper truth\u2014to set that right and<br \/>\nestablish the inward strength as against the power of<br \/>\noutward circumstances. When this<br \/>\npart presents itself, it always tries to appear as<br \/>\nsomething  unalterable,  incapable of change, impervious to the sadhana, But it is not really so<br \/>\nand one must not be deceived by this appearance. As for the fear of madness, it is only a nervous<br \/>\nimpression which you should throw away. At one period in the course of the<br \/>\nsadhana this rises up and one feels identified with<br \/>\nit. With<br \/>\nenough sleep and a quieting of the nerves and<br \/>\nreturn of physical energy that ought to disappear<br \/>\nand it would be possible to bring the Light and<br \/>\nConsciousness down into this obscure part. Its nature is to cling to <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-401 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">the old habitual movements, shrink from Yogic<br \/>\nconsciousness and shut up doors and windows<br \/>\nagainst the help that is offered and lament in the<br \/>\ndarkness when it feels itself hurt. This is a thing<br \/>\nthat everybody must get rid of who wants to progress.<br \/>\nDo not go on identifying yourself with this part<br \/>\nand calling it yourself. Get back into your inner<br \/>\nbeing and look at this only as a small though obstinate part of the nature that has to change. For<br \/>\napart from its insistence there is no reason why<br \/>\nyour way should enter into a desert. It also<br \/>\nshuts you up against your own deeper self and<br \/>\nsterilises your personal effort. An accident of this<br \/>\nkind is common enough in the path of spiritual<br \/>\neffort, and the first thing to be done to get rid of<br \/>\nits effects is to throw away resolutely the persistent<br \/>\nideas and feelings which keep you in the groove.<br \/>\nI do not know whether you can return to the former<br \/>\ncondition, for it is seldom that one can go back to<br \/>\na point in the past; but it is always possible for you<br \/>\nto go forward, recovering the force for propulsion<br \/>\nof what you then gained and have certainly still<br \/>\nwithin you assimilated in your inner being. If you<br \/>\nwant to carry on some part of the Yoga by your<br \/>\nactive efforts and aspiration, there is no reason why<br \/>\nyou should not find back that capacity; but the<br \/>\nfirst effort to be made is to reject persistently, fully<br \/>\nand tenaciously\u2014not for two or three days, but<br \/>\nalways, so long as they insist or return\u2014these<br \/>\ndisabling thoughts and feelings which hamstring <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-403<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">all hope and faith in you, not to accept them, not<br \/>\nto justify them, not to give them by your acquiescence<br \/>\nthe right to go on harping on the same note always<br \/>\nof discouragement, incapacity and failure. The<br \/>\nideas by which you justify them are, I repeat,<br \/>\nnotions only of the physical mind, not true things,<br \/>\ne.g., the notion that you <i>cannot<\/i> understand a<br \/>\ngiven idea (intellectually accepting or not accepting<br \/>\nis another matter); for it is perfectly certain that<br \/>\nyour thinking intelligence is quite trained enough<br \/>\nto understand anything that is put before it. It is<br \/>\nOnly the physical mind that is limited even in the<br \/>\nmost intelligent and opens up fits of stupidity or at least larger or smaller<br \/>\nspaces of blank non-understanding in the face of unaccustomed ideas or a new<br \/>\nline of possible experience or anything else either alien to the mind&#8217;s habits<br \/>\nor unwelcome to something in the vital parts. I suppose we have all had<br \/>\nexperience of this incapable element in our nature, and if one fixes oneself in<br \/>\nit, it can make even<br \/>\nthings that would ordinarily be easy for us seem difficult things and things difficult seem impossible.<br \/>\nBut why should a mind trained to think allow<br \/>\nthis poorer part of itself to dominate it? So with<br \/>\nthe other notions. There is nothing anyone else<br \/>\ncan do in the way of Yoga that you cannot do if<br \/>\nyou have the fixed will to do it; some things may <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-404 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">take a longer time because of past training, habits,<br \/>\nmental associations but there is nothing impossible,<br \/>\ntoo difficult, no inherently insuperable obstacle.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">25-11-1931 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><i><br \/>\n<a name=\"Rejection of False Suggestions of Unfitness for Sadhana\"><\/a>Rejection of False Suggestions of Unfitness for<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Sadhana<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IT would not be at all right to yield to these suggestions which are obviously there of a force that<br \/>\nwants to make use of the unease and disappointment of the vital in order to draw you to break your<br \/>\nsadhana. These are the usual suggestions that come<br \/>\nto all under the stress of the vital condition: &quot;I<br \/>\nam not fit for this sadhana. I must go, I cannot<br \/>\nstay here. The Mother does not love me. I have<br \/>\ngiven up everything and got nothing. The struggle<br \/>\nmakes me too miserable; let me go.&quot; As a matter<br \/>\nof fact, there is no real foundation for these suggestions. Because an acute struggle has come, it<br \/>\nwould be absurd to conclude that you are unfit<br \/>\nfor the sadhana and to give it up after going so far.<br \/>\nIt is because you have asked the physical-vital to<br \/>\ngive up certain of its cherished attachments and <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-405 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">habits that it is in this condition, unable to resist<br \/>\naltogether, miserable at being deprived, it accepts<br \/>\nthese suggestions as an excuse for escape from the<br \/>\npressure you have put upon it. The acuteness of<br \/>\nthe struggle is due to the vehemence of the attack,<br \/>\nbut still more to this vital or a part of it responding<br \/>\nto the suggestions; otherwise a less disturbing, even<br \/>\nif a slower, movement would be quite possible. The<br \/>\nMother has in no way changed towards you nor<br \/>\nis she disappointed with you\u2014that is the suggestion<br \/>\ndrawn from your own state of mind and putting<br \/>\nits wrong sense of disappointment and unfitness on<br \/>\nto the Mother. She has no reason to change or be<br \/>\ndisappointed, as she has always been aware of the<br \/>\nvital obstacles in you and still expected and expects<br \/>\nyou to overcome them. The call to change certain things that seem to be in the<br \/>\ngrain of character is<br \/>\nproving difficult even for the best sadhaks, but the<br \/>\ndifficulty is no proof of incompetence. It is precisely<br \/>\nthis impulse to go that you must refuse to admit<br \/>\n\u2014for so long as these forces think they can bring it about, they will press as much as they can on<br \/>\nthis point. This has often been seen by<br \/>\nsadhaks not only here, but far away, and not only<br \/>\nfor inner difficulties, but for illness and outer pressure<br \/>\nof unfavourable circumstances. But for that a<br \/>\ncertain attitude is necessary\u2014either a strong faith<br \/>\nin the mind and vital or a habit of reception and<br \/>\nresponse in the inner being. Where this habit has been established, I have seen<br \/>\nit to be almost unfailingly effective, even when the faith was uncertain <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-417 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">or the outer expression in the mind vague, ignorant<br \/>\nor in its form mistaken or inaccurate. Moreover,<br \/>\nthis method succeeds most when the writer can&nbsp; write as a witness of his own movements and state<br \/>\nthem with an exact and almost impartial precision,<br \/>\nas a phenomenon of his nature or the movement of a<br \/>\nforce affecting him from which he seeks release. On the other hand, if in writing his vital gets seized by<br \/>\nthe thing he is writing of and takes up the pen for him,<br \/>\n\u2014expressing and often supporting doubt, revolt,<br \/>\ndepression, despair, it becomes a very different<br \/>\nmatter. Even here sometimes the expression acts<br \/>\nas a purge; but also the statement of the condition<br \/>\nmay lend energy to the attack, at least for the<br \/>\nmoment, and may seem to enhance and prolong it,<br \/>\nexhausting it by its own violence perhaps for the<br \/>\ntime and so bringing in the end a relief, but at a<br \/>\nheavy cost of upheaval and turmoil\u2014and the risk of<br \/>\nthe recurring decimal movement, because the release<br \/>\nhas come by temporary exhaustion of the attacking<br \/>\nforce, not by rejection and purification through the<br \/>\nintervention of the Divine Force with the unquestioning assent and support of the sadhak. There has<br \/>\nbeen a confused fight, an intervention in a hurly-burly,&nbsp; not a clear alignment of forces\u2014and<br \/>\nthe intervention of the helping force is not felt in the confusion and the whirl. This is what used to happen in <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-418 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">your crises; the vital in you was deeply, affected and<br \/>\nbegan supporting and expressing the reasonings of<br \/>\nthe attacking force,\u2014in place of a clear observation<br \/>\nand expression of the difficulty by the vigilant mind<br \/>\nlaying the state of things in the light for the higher<br \/>\nLight and Force to act upon it, there was a vehement<br \/>\nstatement of the case for the Opposition. Many<br \/>\nsadhaks (even &quot;advanced&quot;) had made a habit of<br \/>\nthis kind of expression of their difficulties and some<br \/>\nstill do it; they cannot even yet understand that&nbsp; it is not the way. At one time it was a sort of gospel<br \/>\nin the Ashram that this was the thing to be done,\u2014<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know on what ground, for it was never part<br \/>\nof my teaching about the Yoga,\u2014but experience<br \/>\nhas shown that it does not work; it lands one in the<br \/>\nrecurring decimal notation, an unending round of<br \/>\nstruggle.
