The physical mind can be more easily<br \/>\nopened and converted than the rest, but the vital-<br \/>\nphysical and the material-physical are obstinate.<br \/>\nThe old things are always recurring there without<br \/>\nreason and by force of habit. Much of the vital-<br \/>\nphysical and most of the material are in the subconscience<br \/>\nor depend on it. The fact<br \/>\nis that after having been so long in the mental and<br \/>\nvital plane you have become aware of the physical<br \/>\nconsciousness, and the physical consciousness in<br \/>\neverybody is like that. It is inert, conservative, does<br \/>\nnot want to move, to change\u2014it clings to its habits <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-517 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">(what people call their character) or its habits<br \/>\n(habitual movements) cling to it and repeat themselves<br \/>\nlike a clock working in a persistent mechanical<br \/>\nway. When you have cleared your vital somewhat,<br \/>\nthings go down and stick there. You see, if you have<br \/>\nbecome self-conscious, you put pressure, perhaps, but<br \/>\nthe physical responds very slowly, hardly at first it<br \/>\nseems to move at all. The remedy is aspiration steady<br \/>\nand unchanging, patient work, the psychic in the<br \/>\nphysical, calling down the light and force into<br \/>\nthese obscure parts. But although the difficulty<br \/>\nis there, the impossibility does not exist. Even<br \/>\nthis identification may be helpful, for so the change<br \/>\ncan be radical by a direct action in the part itself<br \/>\nor an indirect influence upon it through the mind<br \/>\nor higher vital. One brought by the forces hostile to Yoga<br \/>\nto upset the system and prevent or disturb progress<br \/>\n\u2014without any adequate physical reason\u2014is a hostile<br \/>\nattack. I judge from what you<br \/>\nhave written that it was the physical and vital-<br \/>\nphysical consciousness that it made restless and<br \/>\ninclined to revolt and it did not take the whole<br \/>\nof your consciousness. If you can keep it localised<br \/>\nlike that when it comes and remain quiet in mind<br \/>\nand heart and reject it, then it will not be so difficult<br \/>\nto throw it out. The peace and force must be<br \/>\ncalled down into this vital-physical (nervous) part<br \/>\nand the whole body until you feel the atmosphere<br \/>\nand force pervading you and in you always in all the<br \/>\nbody and not only upon or around you. If you still<br \/>\nfind a difficulty, it is because of the past habit of reaction<br \/>\nin the nervous being and a certain weakness<br \/>\nthere; but persevere, do not consent to the invasion of<br \/>\nthe old forces. This physical consciousness<br \/>\nis not as yet liberated, it has not begun<br \/>\nto be as responsive to the higher force as the vital,<br \/>\nso it cannot resist their invasion. So these forces,<br \/>\nwhen thrown out, retreat into the environmental<br \/>\nconsciousness and remain there concealed and at<br \/>\nany opportunity make an attack on the centres<br \/>\naccustomed to receive them (external mind and the<br \/>\nexternal emotional) and get in. This happens with<br \/>\nmost sadhaks. Two things are necessary\u2014(1) to<br \/>\nopen fully the physical to the higher forces, (2)<br \/>\nto reach the stage when even if the forces attack they<br \/>\ncannot come fully in, the inner being remaining calm<br \/>\nand free. At a certain stage attacks<br \/>\nfall heavily on the body because the opposing forces<br \/>\nfind it more difficult than before to upset the mind<br \/>\nand vital directly, so they fall on the physical in the<br \/>\nhope that that will do the trick, the physical being<br \/>\nmore vulnerable. But the sensibility of the body to<br \/>\nattacks is no proof of incapacity, just as a finer sensibility<br \/>\nof the mind or vital to attacks was no proof\u2014<br \/>\nit can, in due time, be overcome. As for the feelings<br \/>\nabout the Mother and that her love is only given for<br \/>\na return in work or to those who can do sadhana<br \/>\nwell, that is the usual senseless idea of the vital-<br \/>\nphysical mind and has no value. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There is nothing wrong in taking care of the body<br \/>\nin regard to health and, if the liver has gone wrong,<br \/>\nthe instinct to refuse too sweet or greasy or heavy food<br \/>\nis a right instinct. The second is an inertia<br \/>\nof the lower vital and physical consciousness which<br \/>\nprevents it from throwing off the lassitude, from reacting<br \/>\nagainst the attacks and from opening steadily<br \/>\nto the Force which would remove these things. All<br \/>\nthat is due to the breakdown of the poise that you <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-537 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">had for so long, the vital trouble that caused it and<br \/>\nthe reaction of the lower vital to the insistence on<br \/>\nthrowing out the causes of the trouble. This reaction<br \/>\nseems to have been a restlessness at losing the things<br \/>\nto which it was still holding\u2014such a reaction always<br \/>\nbrings the inertia of the physical consciousness,<br \/>\nwhile the right reaction in the lower vital, on the<br \/>\ncontrary, brings a sense of peace, release, quietude<br \/>\nwhich definitely opens the lowest physical parts to<br \/>\nthe higher consciousness and force. If you can get<br \/>\nover this and get back the old poise, then all these&nbsp;<br \/>\nthings can be made to disappear. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Care should be taken of the body certainly, the<br \/>\ncare that is needed for its good condition, rest, sleep,<br \/>\nproper food, sufficient exercise; what is not good is<br \/>\ntoo much preoccupation with it, anxiety, despondency<br \/>\nin the illness, etc., for these things only favour<br \/>\nthe prolongation of ill-health or weakness. If<br \/>\nyou can do that and do it completely, the pain or<br \/>\nuneasiness itself will be more easily and quietly<br \/>\nremoved and you will not be overpowered like this<br \/>\nwith the sense of weakness. You can see that the<br \/>\nForce has the power to take away the pains; but<br \/>\nyou allow yourself to be nervously overcome and<br \/>\ntherefore it is difficult for it to act with a continuous<br \/>\nresult. What was done at that time in the vital,<br \/>\nmust be done in the physical also. These maladies are a creation of the pressure<br \/>\nof hostile forces; they increase if anything in you<br \/>\nassents to them and accepts, and the more the mind<br \/>\ngives value to them and dwells on them, the more<br \/>\nthey grow. The only way is to remain quiet, dissociate<br \/>\nyourself and refuse to accept it or make much<br \/>\nof it, allow the calm and strength that the Mother<br \/>\nhas been putting around you to enter your mind<br \/>\nand permeate your nervous system. To do otherwise<br \/>\nis to place yourself on the side of the hostile forces<br \/>\nthat are afflicting you. Tranquillise in yourself&nbsp;<br \/>\nall over-eager demands and desires, all excitement<br \/>\nand exaggeration of opposite feelings and impulses,<br \/>\nseek first intensity of devotion, but also calm,<br \/>\nstrength, purity and peace. Allow a quiet and steady<br \/>\nwill to progress to be settled in you; learn the habit<br \/>\nof a silent, persistent and thorough assimilation<br \/>\nof what the Mother puts into you. Apart from any<br \/>\nsuch fatal possibility there might be a shock which <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-545 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">might produce a temporary disorder or even some<br \/>\nkind of lesion; as a rule, however, a shock would<br \/>\nbe the only consequence. The general question is<br \/>\na different matter. There is a sort of traditional<br \/>\nbelief in many minds that the practice of Yoga is<br \/>\ninimical to the health of the body and tends to have<br \/>\na bad effect of one kind or another and even finally<br \/>\nleads to a premature or an early dropping of the<br \/>\nbody. Ramakrishna seems to have held the view,<br \/>\nif we can judge from his remarks about the connection<br \/>\nbetween Keshav Sen&#8217;s progress in spirituality<br \/>\nand the illness which undermined him, that one<br \/>\nwas the result and the desirable result of the other,<br \/>\na liberation and release from life in this world,<br \/>\n<i>mukti.<\/i> That may or may not be; but I find it<br \/>\ndifficult to believe that illness and deterioration of<br \/>\nthe body is the natural and general result of the<br \/>\npractice of Yoga or that that practice is the cause<br \/>\nof an inevitable breakdown of health or of the<br \/>\nfinal illnesses which bring about their departure<br \/>\nfrom the body. On what ground are we to suppose<br \/>\nor how can it be proved that while non-Yogis suffer<br \/>\nfrom ill-health and die because of the disorders<br \/>\nof Nature, Yogis die of their Yoga? Unless a direct<br \/>\nconnection between their death and their practice<br \/>\nof Yoga can be proved\u2014and this could be proved<br \/>\nwith certainty only in particular cases and even <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-546 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">then not with an absolute certainty\u2014there is no<br \/>\nsufficient reason to believe in such a difference. It<br \/>\nis more rational to conclude that both Yogis and<br \/>\nnon-Yogis fall ill and die from natural causes and<br \/>\nby the same dispensation of Nature; one might<br \/>\neven advance the view, since they have the Yoga<br \/>\nShakti at their disposal if they choose to use it,<br \/>\nthat the Yogi falls ill and dies not because of but<br \/>\nin spite of his Yoga. At any rate, I don&#8217;t believe<br \/>\nthat Ramakrishna (or any other Yogi) fell ill<br \/>\nbecause of his trances; there is nothing to show that<br \/>\nhe ever suffered in that way after a trance. I think<br \/>\nit is said somewhere or he himself said that the<br \/>\ncancer in his throat of which he died came by his<br \/>\nswallowing the sins of his disciples and those who<br \/>\napproached him: that again may or may not be,<br \/>\nbut it will be his own peculiar case. It is no doubt<br \/>\npossible to draw the illnesses of others upon oneself<br \/>\nand even to do it deliberately, the instance of the<br \/>\nGreek king Antigonus and his son Dimitrius is a<br \/>\nfamous historical case in point; Yogis also do this<br \/>\nsometimes; or else adverse forces may throw illnesses<br \/>\nupon the Yogi, using those round him as a<br \/>\ndoor or a passage or the ill wishes of people as an<br \/>\ninstrumental force. But all these are special circumstances<br \/>\nconnected, no doubt, with his practice of<br \/>\nYoga; but they do not establish the general proposition<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-547 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">as an absolute rule. A tendency such as<br \/>\nX&#8217;s to desire or welcome or accept death as a<br \/>\nrelease could have a force because of her advanced<br \/>\nspiritual consciousness which it would not have<b><br \/>\n<\/b>in<b> <\/b>ordinary people. On the other side, there can be an<br \/>\nopposite use and result of the Yogic consciousness:&nbsp;<br \/>\nillness can be repelled from one&#8217;s own body or<br \/>\ncured, even chronic or deep-seated illnesses and<br \/>\nlong-established constitutional defects remedied or<br \/>\nexpelled and even a predestined death delayed<br \/>\nfor a long period. Narayan Jyotishi, a Calcutta<br \/>\nastrologer, who predicted, not knowing then who<br \/>\nI was, in the days before my name was politically<br \/>\nknown, my struggle with Mleccha enemies and<br \/>\nafterwards the three cases against me and my<br \/>\nthree acquittals, predicted also that though death<br \/>\nwas prefixed for me in my horoscope at the age of<br \/>\nof 63, I would prolong my life by Yogic power for<br \/>\na very long period and arrive at a full old age. In<br \/>\nfact, I have got rid by Yogic pressure of a number<br \/>\nof chronic maladies that had got settled in my<br \/>\nbody. But none of these instances either on the<br \/>\nfavourable or unfavourable side can be made into a<br \/>\nrule; there is no validity in the tendency of human<br \/>\nreason to transform the relativity of these things into<br \/>\nan absolute. Finally I may say of X&#8217;s trances that<br \/>\nthey are the usual <i>savikalpa<\/i> kind opening to all <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-548 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">kinds of experiences, but the large abiding realisations<br \/>\nin Yoga do not usually come in trance but by<br \/>\na persistent waking sadhana. He seems always to have<br \/>\nregarded it as a misuse of spiritual force to utilise<br \/>\nit for preserving the body or curing its ailments or,<br \/>\ntaking care for it. Other Yogis\u2014I do not speak of<br \/>\nthose who think it justifiable to develop Yogic<br \/>\n<i>siddhis\u2014<\/i>have not had this complete disregard of<br \/>\nthe body: they have taken care to maintain it in<br \/>\ngood health and condition as an instrument or a<br \/>\nphysical basis for their development in Yoga. I<br \/>\nhave always been in agreement with this view:&nbsp;<br \/>\nmoreover, I have never had any hesitation in the<br \/>\nuse of a spiritual force for all legitimate purposes <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-549 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">including the maintenance of health and physical<br \/>\nlife in myself and in others\u2014that is indeed why<br \/>\nthe Mother gives flowers not only as a blessing but<br \/>\nas a help in illness. I put a value on the body first<br \/>\nas an instrument, <i>dharmasa&#772;dhana,<\/i> or, more fully,<br \/>\nas a centre of manifested personality in action, a<br \/>\nbasis of spiritual life and activity as of all life and<br \/>\nactivity upon the earth, but also because for me<br \/>\nthe body as well as the mind and life is a part of<br \/>\nthe Divine Whole, a form of the Spirit and therefore<br \/>\nnot to be disregarded or despised as something<br \/>\nincurably gross and incapable of spiritual realisation<br \/>\nor of spiritual use. Matter itself is secretly a<br \/>\nform of the spirit and has to reveal itself as that,<br \/>\ncan be made to wake to consciousness and evolve<br \/>\nand realise the Spirit, the Divine within it. In my<br \/>\nview the body as well as the mind and life has to<br \/>\nbe spiritualised or, one may say, divinised so as<br \/>\nto be a fit instrument and receptacle for the realisation<br \/>\nof the Divine. It has its part in the Divine<br \/>\nLila, even, according to the Vaishnava sadhana,&nbsp;<br \/>\nin the joy and beauty of Divine Love. That<br \/>\ndoes not mean that the body has to be valued for<br \/>\nits own separate sake or that the creation of a<br \/>\ndivine body in a future evolution of the whole<br \/>\nbeing has to be contemplated as an end and not<br \/>\na means\u2014that would be a serious error which <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page-550 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">would not be admissible. At the same time it is not inevitable; if<br \/>\none could have the necessary consciousness and<br \/>\nforce, decay and death is not inevitable. But to<br \/>\nbring that consciousness and force into the whole<br \/>\nof the material nature is the most difficult thing<br \/>\nof all\u2014at any rate, in such a way as to annul the<br \/>\ndecay principle. The doctors say it<br \/>\ndepends mostly on the working of certain glands.<br \/>\nAnyhow the important thing is now to get the<br \/>\nnervous strength back. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">As for the liver also eating little does not help,<br \/>\nvery often it makes the liver sluggish so that it works<br \/>\nless well. What is recommended for liver trouble<br \/>\nis to avoid greasy food and much eating of sweets<br \/>\nand that is also one way of avoiding fat.
