This Ignorance<br \/>\nis the result of a movement by which the cosmic<br \/>\nIntelligence separated itself from the light of the<br \/>\nSupermind (the divine Gnosis) and lost the Truth,\u2014<br \/>\ntruth of being, truth of divine consciousness, truth<br \/>\nof force and action, truth of Ananda. As a result,<br \/>\ninstead of a world of integral truth and divine harmony created in the light of the divine Gnosis, we<br \/>\nhave a world founded on the part truths of an inferior cosmic Intelligence in which all is half-truth,<br \/>\nhalf-error. It is this that some of the ancient thinkers<br \/>\nlike Shankara, not perceiving the greater Truth-<br \/>\nForce behind, stigmatised as Maya and thought to <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">* This letter is intended to explain certain terms occurring in<br \/>\nthe book &quot;The Mother&quot; by Sri Aurbbindo.   . <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 177<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">be the highest creative power of the Divine. All<br \/>\nin the consciousness of this creation is either limited<br \/>\nor else perverted by separation from the integral<br \/>\nLight; even the Truth it perceives is only a half-knowledge. Therefore it is called the Ignorance. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Falsehood, on the other hand, is not this Avidya,<br \/>\nbut an extreme result of it. It is created by an Asuric<br \/>\npower which intervenes in this creation and is not<br \/>\nonly separated from the Truth and therefore limited<br \/>\nin knowledge and open to error, but in revolt against<br \/>\nthe Truth or in the habit of seizing the Truth only<br \/>\nto pervert it. This Power, the dark Asuric Shakti or<br \/>\nRakshasic Maya, puts forward its own perverted<br \/>\nconsciousness as true knowledge and its wilful distortions or reversals of the Truth as the verity of<br \/>\nthings. It is the powers and personalities of this<br \/>\nperverted and perverting consciousness that we call<br \/>\nhostile beings, hostile forces. Whenever these perversions created by them out of the stuff of the Ignorance<br \/>\nare put forward as the Truth of things, that is the<br \/>\nFalsehood, in the Yogic sense, <i>mithya, moha.<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>2<b>.&nbsp; Powers and Appearances<\/b><\/i><b> <\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">These are the forces and beings that are interested<br \/>\nin maintaining the falsehoods they have created in the<br \/>\nworld of the Ignorance and in putting them forward <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 178<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">as the Truth which men must follow. In India they<br \/>\nare termed Asuras, Rakshasas, Pishachas (beings<br \/>\nrespectively of the mentalised vital, middle vital<br \/>\nand lower vital planes) who are in opposition to the<br \/>\nGods, the Powers of Light. These too are Powers,<br \/>\nfor they too have their cosmic field in which they<br \/>\nexercise their function and authority and some of<br \/>\nthem were once divine Powers (the former gods, <i>purve<br \/>\ndevah,<\/i> as they are called somewhere in the Mahabharata) who have fallen towards the darkness by<br \/>\nrevolt against the divine Will behind the cosmos.<br \/>\nThe word &quot;appearances&quot; refers to the forms they<br \/>\ntake in order to rule the world, forms often false and always incarnating falsehood, sometimes pseudo-divine. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">3<b>.&nbsp; <i>Powers and Personalities<\/i> <\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The use of the word Power has already been<br \/>\nexplained\u2014it can be applied to whatever or whoever exercises a conscious power in the cosmic field<br \/>\nand has authority over the world-movement or some<br \/>\nmovement in it. But the Four* of whom you<br \/>\nspeak are also Shaktis, manifestations of different<br \/>\npowers of the Supreme Consciousness and Force. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">* Maheshwari, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">.Page &#8211; 179 <\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">the Divine Mother, by which she rules or acts in<br \/>\nthe universe. And they are at the same time divine personalities; for each is a<br \/>\nbeing who manifests different qualities and personal consciousness-forms of the<br \/>\nGodhead. All the greater Gods are in this way personalities of the Divine\u2014 one<br \/>\nConsciousness playing in many personalities, <i>ekam sat bahudh&#257;.<\/i> Even in the human being there<br \/>\nare many personalities and not only one, as used<br \/>\nformerly to be imagined; for all consciousness cant<br \/>\nbe at once one and multiple. &quot;Powers and Personalities&quot; simply describe different aspects of the same<br \/>\nbeing; a Power is not necessarily impersonal and<br \/>\ncertainly it is not <i>avyaktam,<\/i> as you suggest,\u2014on the<br \/>\ncontrary, it is a&#8217; manifestation acting in the worlds.<br \/>\nof the divine Manifestation. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">4. <b> <i>&nbsp;Emanations<\/i><\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Emanations correspond to your description of the<br \/>\nMatrikas of whom you speak in your letter. Art<br \/>\nemanation of the Mother is something of her consciousness and power put forth from her which,.<br \/>\nso long as it is in play, is held in close connection<br \/>\nwith her and, when its play is no longer required,.<br \/>\nis withdrawn back into its source, but can always.<br \/>\nbe put out and brought into play once more. But <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 180<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">also the detaining thread of connection can be<br \/>\nsevered or loosened and that which came forth as<br \/>\nan emanation can proceed on its way as an independent divine being with its own play in the world.<br \/>\nAll the Gods can put forth such emanations from<br \/>\ntheir being, identical with them in essence of consciousness and power though not commensurate. In<br \/>\na certain sense the universe itself can be said to be<br \/>\nan emanation from the Supreme. In the consciousness of the sadhak an emanation of the Mother<br \/>\nwill ordinarily wear the appearance, form and characteristics with which he is familiar. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In a sense the four Powers of the Mother may be<br \/>\ncalled, because of their origin, her Emanations,<br \/>\njust as the Gods may be called Emanations of the<br \/>\nDivine, but they have a more permanent and fixed<br \/>\ncharacter; they are at once independent beings<br \/>\nallowed their play by the Adya Shakti and yet portions of the Mother, the Mahashakti, and she can<br \/>\nalways either manifest through them as separate<br \/>\nbeings or draw them together as her own various<br \/>\nPersonalities and hold them in herself, sometimes<br \/>\nkept back, sometimes at play, according to her will.<br \/>\nIn the Supramental plane they are always in her<br \/>\nand do not act independently but as intimate portions of the Supramental Mahashakti and in close<br \/>\nunion and harmony with each other. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">.   Page &#8211; 181<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<i><font face=\"Times New Roman\">5.&nbsp; <\/font><\/i><b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<i>Gods<\/i><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">These four Powers are the Mother&#8217;s cosmic godheads, permanent in the world-play; they stand<br \/>\namong the greater cosmic Godheads to whom allusion is made when it is said that the Mother as the<br \/>\nMahashakti of this triple world &quot;stands there (in the Overmind plane) above<br \/>\nthe Gods.&quot; The Gods, as has already been said, are in origin and essence<br \/>\npermanent Emanations of the Divine put forth from<br \/>\nthe Supreme by the Transcendent Mother, the Adya Shakti; in their cosmic action<br \/>\nthey are Powers<br \/>\nand Personalities of the Divine, each with his independent cosmic standing, function and work in the<br \/>\nuniverse. They are not impersonal entities but cosmic Personalities, although they can and do ordinarily veil themselves behind the movement of<i><br \/>\n<\/i>impersonal forces. But while in the Overmind and the triple world they<br \/>\nappear as independent beings,<br \/>\nthey return in the Supermind into the One and.<br \/>\nstand there united in a single harmonious action<br \/>\nas multiple personalities of the one Person, the: Divine Purushottama. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">6. <b> <i>&nbsp;Presence<\/i><\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is intended by the word Presence to indicate-<br \/>\nthe sense and perception of the Divine as a Being,<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 182<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">felt as present in one&#8217;s existence and consciousness<br \/>\nor in relation with it, without the necessity of any<br \/>\nfurther qualification or description. Thus, of the<br \/>\n&quot;ineffable Presence&quot; it can only be said that it is<br \/>\nthere, and nothing-more can or need be said about<br \/>\nit, although at the same time one knows that all<br \/>\nis there, personality and impersonality. Power and<br \/>\nLight and Ananda and everything else, and that<br \/>\nall these flow from that indescribable Presence.<br \/>\nThe word may be Used sometimes in a less absolute<br \/>\nsense, but that is always the fundamental significance,\u2014the essential perception of the essential Presence supporting everything else. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">7. <b> <i>&nbsp;The Transcendent Mother<\/i> <\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">This is what is termed the Adya Shakti; she is the Supreme Consciousness and Power above the<br \/>\nuniverse and it is by her that all the Gods are<br \/>\nmanifested, and even the Supramental Ishwara comes into manifestation through<br \/>\nher\u2014the Supramental Purushottama of whom the Gods are Powers<br \/>\nand Personalities. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 183<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>Conversion of Gods<\/i> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">WHILE the Gods cannot be transformed, for they<br \/>\nare typal and not evolutionary beings, they can<br \/>\nCome for conversion, that is to say, to give up their<br \/>\nown ideas and outlook on things and conform<br \/>\nthemselves to the higher Will and Supramental<br \/>\nTruth of the Divine. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">1-11-1934 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>Typal and Evolutionary Beings<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">(1)<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">AGAIN, what do you mean by a soul ? My proposition<br \/>\nsimply meant that there is no existence which has<br \/>\nnot the support of something of the Divine behind<br \/>\nit. But the word soul has various meanings<br \/>\naccording to the context; it may mean the Purusha<br \/>\nsupporting the formation of Prakriti, which we call<br \/>\na being, though the proper word would be rather<br \/>\nbecoming; it may mean, on the other hand, specifically the psychic being in an evolutionary creature<br \/>\nlike man; it may mean the spark of the Divine which <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">184<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">has been put into Matter by the descent of the<br \/>\nDivine into the material world and which upholds<br \/>\nall evolving formations here. There is and can be<br \/>\nno psychic being in a non-evolutionary creature<br \/>\nlike the Asura; there can be none in a god who<br \/>\ndoes not need one for his existence. But what the<br \/>\ngod has is a Purusha and a Prakriti or Energy of<br \/>\nnature of that Purusha. If any being of the typal<br \/>\nworlds wants to evolve, he has to come down to earth<br \/>\nand take a human body and accept to share in the<br \/>\nevolution. It is because they do not want to do this<br \/>\nthat the vital beings try to possess men so that<br \/>\nthey may enjoy the materialities of physical life<br \/>\nwithout having the burden of the evolution or the<br \/>\nprocess of conversion in which it culminates. I<br \/>\nhope this is clear and solves the difficulty. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">(2) <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">The three stages you speak of are stages not of evolution but of the involution of the Divine in Matter.<br \/>\nThe Devas and Asuras are not evolved in Matter; for the typal being only a Purusha with its Prakriti<br \/>\nis necessary\u2014this Purusha may put out a mental<br \/>\nand vital Purusha to represent it and according as<br \/>\nit is centred in one or another it belongs to the mental or vital world. That is all. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">.  Page &#8211; 185<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There is no essential difference anywhere, for all<br \/>\nis fundamentally the essential Divine, the difference<br \/>\nis in the manifestation. Practically we may say that<br \/>\nthe Jivatman is one of the Divine Many and<br \/>\ndependent on the One; the Atman is the One<br \/>\nsupporting the Many. The psychic being does not<br \/>\nmerge in the Jivatman, it becomes united with it<br \/>\nso that there is no difference between the eternal<br \/>\nbeing supporting the manifestation from above and<br \/>\nthe same being supporting the manifestation from<br \/>\nwithin it, because the psychic being has become fully<br \/>\naware of the play of the Divine through it. What is called merging takes place<br \/>\nin the Divine Consciousness when the Jivatman feels itself so one with<br \/>\nthe Divine that there is nothing else. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">17-11-1934<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>The Life Heavens and the Earth Spirit<\/i> <\/font><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">WHERE do you find in &quot;The Life Heavens&quot;<sup>1<\/sup> that I<br \/>\nsay or anybody says the conditions on the earth are<br \/>\nglorious and suited to the Divine Life? If there is to<br \/>\nfee a Harmony, it must be of all the powers raised<br \/>\nto their highest and harmonised together. All the<br \/>\nnon-evolutionary worlds are worlds limited to their<br \/>\nown harmony like the Life Heavens. The Earth, on<br \/>\nthe other hand, is an evolutionary world, not at all<br \/>\nglorious or harmonious even as a material world<br \/>\n(except in certain appearances) but rather most<br \/>\nsorrowful, disharmonious, imperfect. Yet in that<br \/>\nimperfection is the urge towards a higher and more<br \/>\nmany-sided perfection. It contains the last finite<br \/>\nwhich yet yearns to the supreme Infinite, (it is not satisfied by sense-joys precisely because in the conditions of the earth it is able to see their limitations). God is pent in the mire (mire is not glorious,<br \/>\nso there is no claim to glory or beauty here), but<br \/>\nthat very fact imposes a necessity to break through<br \/>\nthat prison to a consciousness which is ever rising<br \/>\ntowards the heights. And so on. That is &quot;deeper power&quot;, though not a<br \/>\ngreater actual glory or perfection. All that may be true or not to the mind,.<br \/>\nbut it is the traditional attitude of Indian spiritual<br \/>\nexperience. A poem is not a philosophical treatise or<br \/>\na profession of religious faith\u2014it is the expression<br \/>\nof a vision or an experience of some kind, mundane<br \/>\nor spiritual. Here it is the vision of the Life Heavens,<br \/>\nits perfection, its limitation and the counter-claim<br \/>\nof the Earth or rather the Spirit or Power behind<br \/>\nthe earth-consciousness. It has to be taken at that,<br \/>\nas an expression of a certain aspect of things, an<br \/>\nexpression of a certain kind of experience, not of a<br \/>\nmental dogma. But once one<br \/>\nbegins to get the inner view of things, it is different. One begins to<br \/>\nexperience that all is an action of forces, forces of Prakriti psychological as well as physical, which play upon our nature\u2014and these are<br \/>\nconscious forces or are supported by a consciousness<br \/>\nor consciousnesses behind. One is in the midst of a<br \/>\nbig universal working and it is impossible any longer<br \/>\nto explain everything as the result of one&#8217;s own sole<br \/>\nand independent personality. You yourself have at<br \/>\none time written that your crises of despair etc. came<br \/>\nupon you as if thrown on you and worked themselves<br \/>\nout without your being able to determine or put an<br \/>\nend to them. That means an action of universal<br \/>\nforces and not merely an independent action of your<br \/>\nown personality, though it is something in your nature<br \/>\nof which they make use. But you are not conscious,<br \/>\nand others also, of this intervention and pressure at<br \/>\nits source for the reason I state. Those who have<br \/>\ndeveloped the inner view of things on the vital plane <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 192<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">have plenty of experience of the hostile forces.<br \/>\nHowever, you need not personally concern yourself with them so long as they remain incognito.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">One may have the experiences on the mental<br \/>\nplane without this knowledge coming; for there<br \/>\nmind and idea predominate and one does not feel<br \/>\nthe play of Forces\u2014it is only in the vital that that<br \/>\nbecomes clear. In the mind plane they manifest at<br \/>\nmost as mental suggestions and not as concrete<br \/>\nPowers. Because of a perversity born from the Ignorance, which came in with<br \/>\nLife and increased in Mind\u2014that is the Falsehood, the Evil that was born because of the starkness<br \/>\nof the Inconscient&#8217;s sleep separating its action from<br \/>\nthe luminosity of the secret Conscient that is all the<br \/>\ntime within it. But it need not have been so except<br \/>\nfor the overriding Will of the Supreme which meant<br \/>\nthat the possibilities of perversion by inconscience<br \/>\nand ignorance should be manifested in order to be<br \/>\neliminated through being given their chance, since<br \/>\nall possibility has to manifest somewhere&#8217;: once it<br \/>\nis eliminated, the Divine Manifestation in Matter<br \/>\nwill be greater than it otherwise could be, because<br \/>\nit will combine all the possibilities involved in this<br \/>\ndifficult creation and not some of them as in an<br \/>\neasier and less strenuous creation might naturally<br \/>\nhappen. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">&quot;From beauty to greater beauty, from joy to<br \/>\nintenser joy, by an especial adjustment of the senses&quot;<br \/>\n\u2014yes, that would be the normal course of a divine<br \/>\nmanifestation, however gradual, in Matter. &quot;Discordant sound and offensive odour&quot; are creations of <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 194<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">disharmony between consciousness and Nature<br \/>\nand do not exist in themselves; they would not be<br \/>\npresent to a liberated and harmonised consciousness,<br \/>\nfor they would be foreign to its being, nor would they<br \/>\nafflict a rightly developing harmonised soul and<br \/>\nNature. Even the &quot;belching volcano, crashing thunderstorm and whirling typhoon&quot; are in themselves<br \/>\ngrandiose and beautiful things and only harmful<br \/>\nor terrible to a consciousness unable to meet or deal with them or make a pact with the spirits of Wind and Fire. You are assuming that the manifestation from the Inconscient must be what it is now and here and that no other kind of world of Matter was possible, but the harmony of material Nature in itself<br \/>\nI shows that it need not necessarily be a discordant, evil, furiously perturbed and painful creation\u2014the psychic being, if allowed to manifest from the first in Life and Mind and lead the evolution instead<br \/>\nof being relegated behind the veil, would have been<br \/>\nthe principle of a harmony ever outflowing: everyone who has felt the psychic at work within him, free of the<br \/>\nvital intervention, can at once see that this would be<br \/>\nits effect because of its unerring perception, true<br \/>\nchoice, harmonic action. If it has not been so, it is<br \/>\nbecause the Dark Powers have made Life a claimant<br \/>\ninstead of an instrument. The reality of the Hostiles and the nature of their role and trend of their <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 195<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">endeavour cannot be doubted by any one who has<br \/>\nhad his inner vision unsealed and made their<br \/>\nunpleasant acquaintance. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">18-1-1937 <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>Asuras<\/i> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THE Asuras are really the dark side of the mental,<br \/>\nor more strictly, of the vital mind plane. This mind is the very field of the<br \/>\nAsuras. Their main characteristic is egoistic strength and struggle, which<br \/>\nrefuse the higher law. The Asura has self-control, <i>tapas<br \/>\n<\/i>and intelligence, but all that for the sake of his ego. On the lower vital<br \/>\nplane the corresponding forces we<br \/>\ncall the <i>Rakshasas<\/i> which represent violent passions<br \/>\nand influences. There are also other kinds of beings<br \/>\non the vital plane which are called the <i>Pishachas<br \/>\n<\/i>and <i>Pramathas.<\/i> They manifest more or less in the: physico-vital. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">On the physical plane the corresponding forces; are<br \/>\nobscure beings, more forces than beings, what<br \/>\nthe Theosophists call the elementals. They are not<br \/>\nstrongly individualised beings like the Rakshasas<br \/>\nand Asuras, but ignorant and obscure forces working: <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 196<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">the subtle physical plane. What we in Sanskrit<br \/>\ncall the <i>Bhutas<\/i> mostly come under this class. But<br \/>\nthere are two kinds of elementals, the one mischievous and the other not. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There are no Asuras on the higher planes where<br \/>\nthe Truth prevails, except in the Vedic sense\u2014&quot;the<br \/>\nDivine in its strength&quot;. The mental and vital Asuras<br \/>\nare only a deviation of that power. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>Conversion of Asuras<\/i> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">As to Asuras, not many of them have shown signs of<br \/>\nrepentance or possibility of conversion up to now.<br \/>\nIt is not surprising that they should be powerful in a world of ignorance for they have only to persuade<br \/>\npeople to follow the established bent of their lower<br \/>\nnature, while the Divine calls always for a change<br \/>\nof nature. It is not to be wondered at that the Asura<br \/>\nhas an easier task and more momentary success in his<br \/>\ncombinations. But that temporary success does not<br \/>\nbind the future. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Page &#8211; 197<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>Adverse: Forces and Fidelity to the Divine<\/i><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">You ask whether the adverse Force is stronger than<br \/>\nthe Divine Force.
