An Asram is not<br \/>\nan association or a religious body or a<br \/>\nmonastery\u2014it is only what has been<br \/>\nindicated above and nothing more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\" align=\"justify\">\nEverything in the Asram belongs to the Teacher; the sadhaka (those who<br \/>\npractise under him) have no claim, right<br \/>\nor voice in any matter. They remain or&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nPage &#8211; 3<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\ngo according to his   will.   Whatever<br \/>\nmoney he receives is his property and not<br \/>\nthat of a public body.  It is not a trust<br \/>\nor a fund, for there is no public institution.<br \/>\nSuch Asrams have existed in India since<br \/>\nmany centuries before Christ and still exist<br \/>\nin large numbers.  All depends on the<br \/>\nTeacher and ends with his life-time,<br \/>\nunless there is another Teacher who can<br \/>\ntake his place.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\nThe Asram in Pondicherry came into<br \/>\nbeing in this way.  Sri Aurobindo at first<br \/>\nlived in Pondicherry with a few inmates<br \/>\nin his house; afterwards a few more joined<br \/>\nhim.  Later on after the Mother joined<br \/>\nhim, in 1920, the numbers began so much<br \/>\nto increase that it was thought necessary<br \/>\nto make an arrangement for lodging those<br \/>\nwho came and houses were bought and<br \/>\nrented according to need for the purpose.<br \/>\nArrangements had also to be made for the<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nPage &#8211;<br \/>\n4<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nmaintenance, repair, rebuilding of houses,<br \/>\nfor the service .of food and for decent<br \/>\nliving and hygiene.   All those were<br \/>\nprivate rules made by the Mother and<br \/>\nentirely at her discretion to increase,<br \/>\nmodify or alter\u2014there is nothing in them<br \/>\nof a public character.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\nAll houses of the Asram are owned<br \/>\neither by Sri Aurobindo or by the Mother.<br \/>\nAll the money spent belongs either to<br \/>\n&quot; Sri Aurobindo or the Mother. Money is<br \/>\ngiven by many to help in Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s<br \/>\nwork.  Some who are here give their<br \/>\nearnings, but it is given to Sri Aurobindo<br \/>\nor the Mother and not to the Asram as a public body, for there is no such body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\nThe Asram is not an association; there is no constituted body, no officials,<br \/>\nno common property owned by an association, no governing council or committee, no<br \/>\nactivity undertaken of a public character.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\nPage &#8211;<br \/>\n5<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\nThe Asram is not a political institution ; all association with political activities<br \/>\nis renounced by those who live here.<br \/>\nAll propaganda, religious, political or<br \/>\nsocial, has to be eschewed by the inmates.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px\">\nThe Asram is not a religious association.
