\nSRI AUROBINDO’S ASRAM <\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAN Asram means the house or houses
\nof a Teacher or Master of spiritual
\nphilosophy in which he receives and
\nlodges those who come to him for the
\nteaching and practice. An Asram is not
\nan association or a religious body or a
\nmonastery\u2014it is only what has been
\nindicated above and nothing more.<\/p>\n

\nEverything in the Asram belongs to the Teacher; the sadhaka (those who
\npractise under him) have no claim, right
\nor voice in any matter. They remain or <\/p>\n

\ngo according to his will. Whatever
\nmoney he receives is his property and not
\nthat of a public body. It is not a trust
\nor a fund, for there is no public institution.
\nSuch Asrams have existed in India since
\nmany centuries before Christ and still exist
\nin large numbers. All depends on the
\nTeacher and ends with his life-time,
\nunless there is another Teacher who can
\ntake his place.<\/p>\n

\nThe Asram in Pondicherry came into
\nbeing in this way. Sri Aurobindo at first
\nlived in Pondicherry with a few inmates
\nin his house; afterwards a few more joined
\nhim. Later on after the Mother joined
\nhim, in 1920, the numbers began so much
\nto increase that it was thought necessary
\nto make an arrangement for lodging those
\nwho came and houses were bought and
\nrented according to need for the purpose.
\nArrangements had also to be made for the<\/p>\n

\nmaintenance, repair, rebuilding of houses,
\nfor the service .of food and for decent
\nliving and hygiene. All those were
\nprivate rules made by the Mother and
\nentirely at her discretion to increase,
\nmodify or alter\u2014there is nothing in them
\nof a public character.<\/p>\n

\nAll houses of the Asram are owned
\neither by Sri Aurobindo or by the Mother.
\nAll the money spent belongs either to
\n" Sri Aurobindo or the Mother. Money is
\ngiven by many to help in Sri Aurobindo’s
\nwork. Some who are here give their
\nearnings, but it is given to Sri Aurobindo
\nor the Mother and not to the Asram as a public body, for there is no such body. <\/p>\n

\nThe Asram is not an association; there is no constituted body, no officials,
\nno common property owned by an association, no governing council or committee, no
\nactivity undertaken of a public character.<\/p>\n

\nThe Asram is not a political institution ; all association with political activities
\nis renounced by those who live here.
\nAll propaganda, religious, political or
\nsocial, has to be eschewed by the inmates.<\/p>\n

\nThe Asram is not a religious association. Those who are here come from all
\nreligions and some are of no religion.
\nThere is no creed or set of dogmas, no
\ngoverning religious body; there are only
\nthe teachings of Sri Aurobindo and certain
\npsychological practices of concentration
\nand meditation, etc., for the enlarging of
\nthe consciousness, receptivity to the Truth,
\nmastery over the desires, the discovery of
\nthe divine self and consciousness concealed
\nwithin each human being, a higher evolution of the nature.<\/p>\n
