G.).htm"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"6\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse\" width=\"100%\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\"><b><font size=\"4\"><br \/>\n<span><br \/>\nShall India be Free ?<\/span><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"> <font size=\"3\"><br \/>\nT<\/font><font size=\"2\">HE <\/font>L<font size=\"2\">OYALIST <\/font>G<font size=\"2\">OSPEL<\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><b><font size=\"5\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/font><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><font size=\"4\"><br \/>\n<\/font><b><font size=\"4\">L<\/font><font size=\"2\">IBERTY<\/font><\/b><span style=\"font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:12pt\"><br \/>\nis the first requisite for the sound health and vigorous life of a nation. A<br \/>\nforeign despotism is in itself an unnatural condition and if permitted, must<br \/>\nbring about other unhealthy and unnatural conditions in the subject people which<br \/>\nwill lead to fatal decay and disorganisation. Foreign rule cannot build up a<br \/>\nnation &#8212; only the resistance to foreign rule can weld the discordant elements of<br \/>\na people into an indivisible unity. When a people, predestined to unity, cannot<br \/>\naccomplish its destiny, foreign rule is a provision of Nature by which the<br \/>\nnecessary compelling pressure is applied to drive its jarring parts into<br \/>\nconcord. The unnatural condition of foreign rule is brought in for a time in<br \/>\norder to cure the previous unnatural condition of insufficient cohesiveness; but<br \/>\nthis can only be done by the resistance of the subject people; for the incentive<br \/>\nto unity given by the alien domination consists precisely in the desire to get<br \/>\nrid of it; and if this desire is absent, if the people acquiesce, there can be<br \/>\nno force making for unity. Foreign rule was therefore made to be resisted; and<br \/>\nto acquiesce in it is to defeat the very intention with which Nature created it.<br \/>\n &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; These considerations are not abstract ideas, but the<br \/>\n undeniable teaching of<br \/>\nhistory which is the record of the world&#8217;s experience. Nationalism takes its<br \/>\nstand upon this experience and calls upon the people of India not to allow<br \/>\nthemselves to fall into the acquiescence in subjection which is the death-sleep<br \/>\nof nations, but to make that use of the alien domination which Nature intended,<br \/>\n&#8212; to struggle against it and throw it off for unity, for self-realisation, as an<br \/>\nindependent national organism. In this country, however, there is a class of<br \/>\nwise men who regard the rule of the British bureaucracy as a dispensation of<br \/>\nProvidence, not only to create unity but to preserve it. They preach therefore a<br \/>\ngospel of faith in the foreigner, distrust of our countrymen and acquiescence in<br \/>\nalien rule as a godsend from on<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><br \/>\nPage-300<\/span><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\" style=\"margin:0\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:12pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">high and an<br \/>\nindispensable condition for peace and prosperity. Even those whose hearts rebel<br \/>\nagainst a doctrine so servile, are intellectually so much dominated by it that<br \/>\nthey cannot embrace Nationalism with their whole heart and try to arrive at a<br \/>\ncompromise between subjection and independence,<\/font><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">  <\/font><\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:12pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n&#8212;<br \/>\na half-way house between<br \/>\nlife and death. Their ingenuity discovers an intermediate condition in which the<br \/>\nblessings of freedom will be harmoniously wedded with the blessings of<br \/>\nsubjection; and to this palace in fairyland they have given the name of Colonial<br \/>\nSelf-Government. If it were not for the existence of this Moderate opinion and<br \/>\nits strange parti-coloured delusions, we would not have thought it worth while<br \/>\nto go back to first principles and show the falsity of the Loyalist gospel of<br \/>\nacquiescence. But the Moderate delusion is really a by-product of the Loyalist<br \/>\ndelusion; and the parent error must be demolished first, before its offspring<br \/>\ncan be corrected. The Moderates are a hybrid species, emotionally nationalist,<br \/>\nintellectually loyalist. It is owing to this double nature that their delusions<br \/>\nacquire an infinite power for mischief. People listen to them because they claim<br \/>\nto be Nationalist and because a sincere Nationalist feeling not infrequently<br \/>\nbreaks through the false Loyalist reasoning. Moreover by associating themselves<br \/>\nwith the Moderates on the same platform the Loyalists are enabled to exercise an<br \/>\ninfluence on public opinion which would otherwise<br \/>\nnot be<br \/>\naccorded to them. The gospel according to Sir Pherozshah Mehta would not have<br \/>\nsuch power for harm if it were not allowed to represent itself as one and the<br \/>\nsame with the gospel according to Mr. Gokhale.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What then are the original ideas from which the Loyalist gospel proceeds? It has<br \/>\na triple foundation of error. First comes the postulate that disunion and<br \/>\nweakness are ingrained characteristics of the Indian people and an outside<br \/>\npower is necessary in order to arbitrate, to keep the peace and to protect the<br \/>\ncountry from the menace of the mightier nations that ring us in. Proceeding from this view and supporting it, is the second postulate that there must be<br \/>\nan entire levelling down and sweeping away of all differences, aristocrat and<br \/>\npeasant, Brahmin and Sudra, Bengali, Punjabee and Maratha, all must efface their<br \/>\ncharacteristics and differences before any resistance to foreign domination can<br \/>\nbe<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Page-301<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><font size=\"3\">attempted,<br \/>\neven if such resistance were desirable. The third postulate is that a healthy<br \/>\ndevelopment is possible under foreign domination and that this healthy<br \/>\ndevelopment must be first effected before we can dream of freedom or even of<br \/>\nbecoming a nation. If these three postulates are granted, then the Loyalist<br \/>\ncreed is unassailable; if they are proved unsound, not only the Loyalist creed<br \/>\nbut the standpoint of the Moderates ceases to have any basis of firm ground and<br \/>\nbecomes a thing in the air. The Nationalist contention is that all these three<br \/>\npostulates are monuments of political unreason and have no firm foundation<br \/>\neither in historical experience or in the facts we see around us or in the<br \/>\nnature of things. They are inconsistent with the fundamental nature of foreign<br \/>\ndomination; they ignore the experience of all other subject nations; they<br \/>\ndisregard human nature and the conditions of human development in communities.<br \/>\nThe Loyalist gospel is as untrue as it is ignoble.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><font size=\"4\"><br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n<a name=\"The Mask is Off\">The Mask is Off<\/a><\/b><br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"3\"><br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe Anglo-Indian journals are trying to assure the public that everything is<br \/>\nquiet in Jamalpur under the shadow of the British sword. The accounts that are<br \/>\nappearing in various Indian journals put a very different complexion on the<br \/>\nsituation. It appears, to begin with, that the Gurkhas who were called in to<br \/>\npreserve the peace are being allowed in cooperation with local hooligans to<br \/>\nbreak it. The case of image-breaking is being deliberately put off and the whole<br \/>\nenergy of the executive is devoted to terrorising the Hindus. Several<br \/>\npleaders, a Muktear, a Naib of Ramgopalpur and a Superintendent of the<br \/>\nGauripur estate, along with other leading gentlemen of Jamalpur have been<br \/>\narrested. &quot;The number of Mahomedan arrests,&quot; writes one correspondent,<br \/>\n&quot;is simply <i>nil<\/i>&quot;.<i> <\/i>Comment is hardly necessary. The alliance of<br \/>\nthe British bureaucracy with hooliganism stands confessed. To take advantage of<br \/>\nMahomedan riots in order to further terrorise by legal proceedings the assaulted<br \/>\nHindus, is the first preoccupation of the local magistrates. We have pointed<br \/>\nout already that the procedure is to give scope and room enough for anti-Swadeshi<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Page-302<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\">violence and pillage and then to punish the Swadeshists for the crime of self-defence<br \/>\nor even simply for the crime of being assaulted. The mask is off.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"4\"><br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n<a name=\"A Loyalist in a Panic\">A Loyalist in a Panic<\/a><\/b><br \/>\n<\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"3\"><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<\/font><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:12pt\">Not only the <i>Englishman<br \/>\n<\/i>but the <i>Indian Mirror <\/i>has been seriously frightened by the course of<br \/>\nevents in the Punjab. No wonder. The lion spirit of the Punjab was not burned on<br \/>\nthe pyre with Runjit Singh; it only went to sleep for a while after Chilianwala<br \/>\nand is now again awake. The <i>Mirror <\/i>is uneasy for the safety of the<br \/>\nEmpire. The <i>Mirror <\/i>does not mind very much what may happen in East<br \/>\nBengal, but if discontent spreads to the Punjab, it may affect the Sikhs, and<br \/>\nthen what would become of the British Empire and the <i>Indian Mirror<\/i>?<i> <\/i>The<br \/>\nremedy proposed by our senile contemporary is that we should stop all political<br \/>\nagitation by putting off all public meetings until the country is quiet and that<br \/>\nBabu Bepin Chandra Pal should not go about stirring up the people of Southern<br \/>\nIndia &quot;as regards Swadeshi, Boycott, Swaraj and other things&quot;. Sir<br \/>\nDenzil Ibbertson is also advised to cure the evil by kindness, &#8212; a wise counsel<br \/>\nto which, no doubt, he will incline his patient ear; for where can he find a<br \/>\nbetter well-wisher<br \/>\nthan the <i>Indian Mirror<\/i>?<i> <\/i>It appears that the meetings addressed by Srijut Bepin Chandra<br \/>\n&quot;are not likely to lessen the political unrest; on the contrary, they are<br \/>\ndecidedly adding fuel to the fire&quot;. Well, what else should be their object?<br \/>\nTo lull the country back into sleep and submission? The <i>Mirror <\/i>reminds us<br \/>\nof a venerable old woman awakened at night by the noise of burglars in the house<br \/>\nand recommending everybody to turn over and sleep or pretend to sleep until the<br \/>\nhouse is quiet, &#8212; and the burglars, unopposed, have done their business. But<br \/>\nwe thought that the <i>Mirror <\/i>had discovered the Extremists to be a small<br \/>\nand insignificant party without any following in the country. What does it matter what such<br \/>\na party is or is not doing? The country, the <i>Mirror <\/i>declared, is at the<br \/>\nback of the Moderate Party.
