(On 2 June 1947 Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Viceroy of India, delivered
\na radio speech proposing the partition of Pakistan from India, and of certain
\nother parts of India into Hindu and Muslim states. After hearing the broadcast,
\nMother issued the following statement.) <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

A proposal has been made for the solution
\nof our difficulties in organising Indian independence and it is being accepted
\nwith whatever bitterness of regret and searchings of the heart by Indian
\nleaders. <\/span><\/p>\n

But do you know why this proposal has been
\nmade to us? It is to prove to us the absurdity of our quarrels. <\/span><\/p>\n

And do you know why we have to accept
\nthese proposals? It is to prove to ourselves the absurdity of our quarrels. <\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly, this is not a solution; it is a
\ntest, an ordeal which, if we live it out in all sincerity, will prove to us
\nthat it is not by cutting a country into small bits that we shall bring about
\nits unity and its greatness; it is not by opposing interests against each other
\nthat we can win for it prosperity; it is not by setting one dogma against
\nanother that we can serve the spirit of Truth. In spite of all, India has a
\nsingle soul and while we have to wait till we can speak of an India one and
\nindivisible, our cry must be: <\/span><\/p>\n

\nshine at the top of the spiritual mountain and show the way of Truth and organise

\nis the Guru of the world. The future structure of the world depends on India.

\nin the world, these petty quarrels over governmental and political rivalries, which

(On 1 November 1954 Pondicherry and the other French settlements in
\nIndia were transferred to the Indian Union. To celebrate the occasion the flag
\nwith Mother’s symbol at its centre was hoisted at the Ashram at 6.20 a.m., when

For us the 1st November has a deep
\nsignificance. We have a flag which Sri Aurobindo called the Spiritual Flag of
\nUnited India. Its square form, its colour and every detail of its design have a
\nsymbolic meaning. It was hoisted on the 15th August 1947 when India became
\nfree. It will now be hoisted on the 1st November 1954 when these settlements
\nget united with India and it will be hoisted in the future whenever India
\nrecovers other parts of herself. United India has a special mission to fulfil
\nin the world. Sri Aurobindo laid down his life for it and we are prepared to do
\nthe same.  <\/span><\/p>\n

This kind of thinking is quite out of
\nplace at this moment. One should never criticise someone if one has not proved
\nindisputably that, in the same circumstances, one can do better than he. <\/span><\/p>\n

Do you feel yourself capable of being an unequalled
\nPrime Minister of India? I reply: certainly not, and advise you to keep silent
\nand to remain quiet. <\/span><\/p>\n

Patriotic sentiments are not incompatible
\nwith our yoga \u2013 far from it \u2013 to will for the strength and the integrity of

\nprogress and that more and more she may manifest, in full freedom, the truth of
\nher being, is a fine and noble will which cannot be harmful for our yoga.<\/span><\/p>\n

But one must not get excited, one must not
\nplunge prematurely into action. One can and should pray, aspire and will for
\nthe victory of the truth and, at the same time, continue to discharge one’s
\ndaily duties and wait quietly for the unmistakable sign to come, indicating the

\nBengal. You said that Bengal is not receptive to Your Force and does not accept
\nYou. Nothing could be sadder for Bengal. But, Mother, how is it that Bengal,
\nhaving worshipped You, the Divine Mother, throughout the ages and appealed to
\nYou in all circumstances, is now in such a deplorable and lamentable state? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Mother, how far am I responsible (for I must confess
\nthat I feel guilty) and what should I do so that You do not forsake this

I did not say anything against Bengal in
\nparticular. I said that all the events that are taking place are due to the
\nlack of receptivity in human beings, who still seem to be in the same state of
\nconsciousness that was natural and general three or four hundred years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, one could have hoped that the
\nBengalis, because of their faith, would have given the example of a greater
\nreceptivity and refused to yield to these movements of unconscious violence.
\nBut as you very rightly say, each one can find the answer within himself and
\nsincerely ask himself how much he has taken advantage of his stay here! If even
\nhere the result is slight and mediocre, what can one expect from those who are
\nnot under the direct and immediate influence? <\/span><\/p>\n

Our aim is no exclusive national system of education
\nfor India but an essential and fundamental education for all mankind. But is it
\nnot true, Mother, that this education, because of India’s special fitness by
\nvirtue of her past cultural striving and attainment, is India’s privilege and
\nspecial responsibility towards herself and the world? At any rate, this
\nessential education is India’s national education to my mind. In fact, I regard
\nthis as the national education of each great country with characteristic
\ndifferentiations peculiar to each nation. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I wonder whether this is correct and Mother would
\nendorse it. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Yes, this is quite correct and part of
\nwhat I would have said if I had had time to answer your questions. <\/span><\/p>\n

India has or rather had<\/i> the knowledge of the Spirit<\/i>,
\nbut she neglected matter and suffered for it. <\/span><\/p>\n

The West has the knowledge of matter but
\nrejected the Spirit and suffers badly for it. <\/span><\/p>\n

An integral education which could, with
\nsome variations, be adapted to all the nations of the world, must bring back
\nthe legitimate authority of the Spirit over a matter fully developed and
\nutilised. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is in short what I wanted to say. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nCentre of Education. At that time a group of teachers submitted the following

\nBASIC ISSUES OF INDIAN EDUCATION<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

1. In view of the present and the future of national and international
\nliving, what is it that India should aim at in education? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Prepare her children for the rejection of
\nfalsehood and the manifestation of Truth. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

2. By what steps could the country proceed to realise this high aim? How
\ncan a beginning in that direction be made? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Make matter ready to manifest the Spirit. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

3. What is India’s true genius and what is her destiny? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

To teach to the world that matter is false
\nand impotent unless it becomes the manifestation of the Spirit. <\/span><\/p>\n

4. How does the Mother view the progress of Science and Technology in
\nIndia? What contribution can it make to the growth of the Spirit in man? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Its only use is to make the material basis
\nstronger, completer and more effective for the manifestation of the Spirit. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

5. The country feels much concerned about national unity. What is the
\nMother’s vision of things? How <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The unity of all the nations is the

6. The language problem harasses India a good deal. What would be our
\ncorrect attitude in this matter?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Unity must be a living fact and not the
\nimposition of an arbitrary rule. When India will be one, she will have
\nspontaneously a language understood by all. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

7. Education has normally become literacy and a social status. Is it not
\nan unhealthy trend? But how to give education its inner worth and intrinsic enjoyability<\/span>? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Get out of conventions and insist on the
\ngrowth of the soul. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

8. What illusions and delusions is our
\neducation today beset with? How could we possibly keep clear of them? <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span>The almost exclusive importance given to success, career and money.<\/span><\/p>\n

b)<\/span>

\n<\/span><\/span>Insist on the paramount importance of the contact with the Spirit and
\nthe growth and manifestation of the Truth of the being. <\/span><\/p>\n

I would like them (the Government) to
\nrecognise Yoga as education, not so much for ourselves, but it will be good for

(On 1 September 1965 Pakistan invaded India’s western border at
\nJammu-Kashmir. The conflict ended in a cease-fire on 22 September. During this
\ntime Mother made the following five statements.) <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo writes in his Essays on the Gita: \u201cThe law of Vishnu
\ncannot prevail till the debt to Rudra is paid.\u201d What does this mean? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Mother, is the present situation in India like the
\ndebt which must be paid to Rudra?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Here is the whole quotation which I had
\nprepared in advance for those who would ask the wherefore of the present
\nsituation. I am sending it to you so that your question is taken care of. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo real peace can be till the heart of
\nman deserves peace; the law of Vishnu cannot prevail till the debt to Rudra is
\npaid. To turn aside then and preach to a still unevolved<\/span>
\nmankind the law of love and oneness? Teachers of the law of love and oneness
\nthere must be, for by that way must come the ultimate salvation. But not till

The only thing to do is to pray <\/span>―<\/span> from the heart <\/span>―<\/span> for the Divine intervention as that is
\nthe only thing that can save us. And all people who can become conscious of
\nthis must decide very firmly to stand only on the Truth and to act only in the Truth.
\nThere should be no compromise. This is very essential. It is the only way. <\/span><\/p>\n

Even if things seem to go wrong and badly
\nfor us, as indeed they will, because of the present prevailing falsehood <\/span>―<\/span> we should not be deterred from our own
\ndetermination to stand on the Truth. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nmaterial and you hand over that part to the Asura<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a7<\/span><\/p>\n

From time immemorial (some scholars say
\n8000 years before the Christian era) India has been the land of spiritual knowledge
\nand practice, of the discovery of the Supreme Reality and union with it. It is
\nthe country that has practised concentration most and best. The methods, called
\nYoga in Sanskrit, that are taught and used in this country are countless. Some
\nare merely material, others purely intellectual, others religious and
\ndevotional; lastly, some of them combine these various processes in order to
\nachieve a more integral result. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAh! Since India is the cradle of religion and since so many gods
\npreside over her destiny, who among them will accomplish the miracle of
\nresuscitating the city?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In all times the aspirant, before
\nreceiving initiation, had to pass through tests. In the schools of antiquity
\nthese tests were artificial and by that they lost the greater part of their
\nvalue. But it is no longer so now. The test hides behind some very ordinary
\nevery-day circumstance and wears an innocent air of coincidence and chance
\nwhich makes it still more difficult and dangerous. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is only to those who can conquer the
\nmind’s preferences and prejudices of race and education that India reveals the
\nmystery of her treasures. Others depart disappointed, failing to find what they
\nseek; for they have sought it in the wrong way and would not agree to pay the
\nprice of the Divine Discovery. <\/span><\/p>\n

The new State of Pondicherry is here
\nrepresented by a small country craft carrying a pavilion. The four principal
\npillars of this pavilion are the four Continents of Asia, Europe, Africa and
\nAmerica. Asia is represented by the Buddha, Europe by Pallas Athene<\/span>, Africa by Isis and America by the Statue of
\nLiberty. The spiritual supports upbear<\/span> the globe of
\nthe world on which the Dove of Peace descends from on high. On either side of
\nthe globe stand an Indian lady with a welcoming leaf of palm and a French lady
\nwith an auspicious olive branch. This amity between the Orient and the Occident
\naugurs well for an enduring peace and concord among nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The open spaces between the four pillars
\nof the pavilion are covered by entwining creepers with alternating red and white
\nlotuses. The red and the white lotuses represent the twin spiritual
\nConsciousness guiding the terrestrial evolution. <\/span><\/p>\n
