I know that people are fussy and
\nunreasonable. But unless their consciousness changes, what else can we expect
\nfrom them? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

People are here to change their
\nconsciousness. Unless they become, all of
\nthem, true<\/i> to their aim<\/i>, nothing true
\ncan be done. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It is evident that those who want to live
\nhere must change not so much their way of living as their way of being. <\/span><\/p>\n

We are striving towards a consciousness
\nmore deep, more total and more true; because our raison<\/i> d’\u00eatre<\/i> is to
\nmanifest this consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

What is the use of being a sadhak if, as
\nsoon as we act, we act like the ignorant ordinary man? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

We are expected to give to the world an
\nexample of better life but surely not of misbehaviour. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The moment one enters the life of the
\nAshram and takes up the yoga, he ceases to belong to any creed or caste or
\nrace; he is one of Sri Aurobindo’s disciples and nothing else. To cut jokes <\/span><\/p>\n

about what he was in the past is altogether
\nincongruous and in bad taste, and only helps to keep up in both him and the
\nspeaker an old and wrong mental attitude. <\/span><\/p>\n

When X, a dancer, came here to see You, many sadhaks flocked around him.
\nThey insisted on his performing some dances. But he said he had come here
\nwithout any dance dresses. He did not appreciate people’s desires for dances.
\nHe secretly told me that if he came here again he would take particular care
\nnot to bring the dance costumes. For he would come not for showing himself off
\nbut for the yoga! <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

He is quite right. Too many people in the
\nAshram forget that they are here for yoga. <\/span><\/p>\n

7 January 1938<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Ashram is meant for Yoga, not for
\nmusical entertainment or other social activities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Those that live in the Ashram are
\nrequested to live quietly and noiselessly and if they are not capable
\nthemselves of meditation they must, at least, leave the others to meditate. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

I do not know who is spreading the rumour
\nthat I do not like music. That is not true at all I like music very much, but
\nit should be heard in a small circle, that is, played for five or six people at
\nthe most. When there is a crowd it becomes a social gathering, more often than
\nnot, and the atmosphere that is created is not good.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from the fact that the Ashram is not
\nmeant for those who seek the satisfaction of their vital or sentimental
\ndesires, but for those who aspire to perfect their consecration to the Divine,
\nI have to warn you that here you must do only what can be done publicly because
\nnothing can remain hidden. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the Ashram one must do only what one
\nmay do publicly, for nothing remains hidden. As for my protection it is equally
\nover all and not over some as against others. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It is impossible to give a single answer
\nfor all cases. With each person and on each occasion, it will differ. But, at
\nany rate, it can be said that whoever lives in a community must follow, as much
\nas possible, the rules of that community. Moreover people have a right to go
\nagainst collective rules only when all their actions are prompted exclusively
\nby the Divine in them. If all they do, all they say is done and said as they
\nwould do and say in the presence of the Divine, then, but then only, they have the
\nright to say, \u201cI follow my own rule and no other.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

With \u201cpersonal feelings\u201d nothing can be
\ndone in the Ashram.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rise above personal feelings and the doors
\nof realisation will open. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is high time that peace and harmony
\nshould reign in the Ashram.  <\/span><\/p>\n

All that seems very much like going back
\nto the time of primitive man in the caves.<\/span><\/p>\n

We do not wish to live the artificial life
\nof civilised society, but it would be better to climb up the ladder towards a
\ngreater civilisation rather than to fall backwards to the rule of the blows.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have sent for the \u201cdelinquent\u201d to tell
\nhim that this kind of activity is out of place in the Ashram, though
\nunfortunately it is only too often practised here; but I am sending you this
\nletter before seeing him so that you may know that he has nothing to do with
\nwhat I am writing to you. <\/span><\/p>\n

But the second part of your letter made me
\nsee that, without justifying the aggression, for an aggression cannot be
\njustified, at least your state of mind warrants it. I have rarely seen such a
\ndisplay of hatred and envy, bitter criticism and commonplace morality arising
\nfrom unsatisfied and repressed desires.<\/span><\/p>\n

All this is not very nice and immediately
\ntakes away the sympathy one could have felt because of the blows you received.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

I thank you for reminding me that my
\nposition gives me duties and responsibilities, but it is better to call the
\nGrace rather than justice, for if it were to come into action very few would be
\nthose who could stand before it. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sexual relations are forbidden in the
\nAshram. <\/span><\/p>\n

So, honesty demands a choice between the
\nAshram and sexual relations. It is a matter of conscience. <\/span><\/p>\n
