But<br \/>\nit is well understood that the Ashram is not exclusively composed of sadhaks.<br \/>\nThe Ashram is a reduced image of life where those who practice yoga are a<br \/>\nminority, and if I were to keep here only those who are quite sincere in their<br \/>\nsadhana, very few indeed would remain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sri Aurobindo always reminds us of the<br \/>\nfact that the Divine is everywhere and in everything, and asks us to practise a<br \/>\ntrue compassion, as is so beautifully expressed in this aphorism which I am<br \/>\njust commenting upon, \u201cExamine thyself without pity, then thou wilt be more<br \/>\ncharitable and pitiful to others.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>And in this light, I must ask you to let X<br \/>\ncome and see his mother who loves him dearly and would be very miserable if she<br \/>\nwere deprived of his visits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>As for his work it is a matter between<br lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sri Aurobindo says: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Better to put behind you your past<br \/>\naltogether and not <span class=\"SpellE\">reestablish<\/span> broken ties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It would be better not to write nor to<br \/>\nsend a wire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u201cWhen you have nothing pleasant to say<br \/>\nabout something or somebody in the Ashram, keep silent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u201cYou must know that this silence is<br \/>\nfaithfulness to the Divine&#8217;s work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>I am thinking of inviting articles for publication in our journal from<br \/>\ntwo writers whose names have been recommended to me by X. &nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 150<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" New Roman\"'>But I do not know what is their attitude towards<br \/>\nSri Aurobindo. X tells me that they are competent writers and have studied Sri<br \/>\nAurobindo and 146so they will be able to write well for our journal. My<br \/>\nexperience is that these writers, if they are open-minded and progressive,<br \/>\nsometimes write about Sri Aurobindo from a new angle which is very interesting.<br \/>\nBut more often they try to judge Sri Aurobindo from their own narrow and<br \/>\nconditioned intellectual outlook. So I would like to have Your guidance in this<br \/>\nmatter. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Not to ask anything from people we do not<br \/>\nknow and we are not sure of their mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>What I have written holds for all of them.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>22 October 1965 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Mother, in the letter below Sri Aurobindo has written about the<br \/>\nnecessity of restricting our contacts with the outside world and separating<br \/>\nourselves from the ordinary life, in order to carry on our special work of<br \/>\nbringing down a new consciousness for the earth. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>This letter was written in 1933. But now all types of<br \/>\npeople from the outside world are freely allowed to come to the Ashram, and the<br \/>\nsadhaks of the Ashram also freely mix with them. Is it because we have now<br \/>\nreached a new stage in our work in which the earlier restrictions in our<br \/>\ncontacts with the outside world are no longer necessary? Will you please<br \/>\nenlighten me on this point?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Question to Sri Aurobindo<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u201cLove of the Divine in all beings and the constant perception and<br \/>\nacceptance of its workings in all&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 151<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>things\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Lucida Console\"'>\u00b9&#8213;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> if this is one of the ways of realising the Divine and seeing Him in<br \/>\nall, why do we here restrict our contacts with people in the outside world? Why<br \/>\ncan we not give our love to all? <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Reply of Sri Aurobindo<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>That is all right in the ordinary Karma yoga which aims at union with<br \/>\nthe cosmic spirit and stops short at the <span class=\"SpellE\">overmind<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Lucida Console\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> but here a special work has to be done and a new realisation achieved<br \/>\nfor the earth and not for ourselves alone. It is necessary to stand apart from<br \/>\nthe rest of the world so as to separate ourselves from the ordinary<br \/>\nconsciousness in order to bring down a new one.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is not that love for all is not part of the<br \/>\nsadhana, but it has not to translate itself at once into a mixing with all<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Lucida Console\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> it can only express itself in a general and when need be dynamic<br \/>\nuniversal goodwill, but for the rest it must find vent in this labour of<br \/>\nbringing down the higher consciousness with all its effect for the earth. As<br \/>\nfor accepting the working of the Divine in all things that is necessary here<br \/>\ntoo in the sense of seeing it even behind our struggles and difficulties, but<br \/>\nnot accepting the nature of man and the world as it is<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Lucida Console\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> our aim is to move towards a more divine working which will replace<br \/>\nwhat now is by a greater and happier manifestation. What can we do to show them the reality of the Ashram? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Live it. Live this reality.
