The salary should depend on the work of the worker, on his ability, his<br \/>\nregularity, not on the number of people he has to feed. For if we took these<br \/>\ncircumstances into consideration, it would no longer be paid work but charity,<br \/>\nand as I have said very often, we are not a relief committee. Our experience is constant that<br \/>\nwhen the workmen are paid overtime they do practically nothing during the<br \/>\nworking hours and so manage to have regularly overtime pay at a very high rate.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>1 February 1945<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Today after a break of several years owing<br \/>\nto the tragic events which have disrupted the world, we resume our established<br \/>\ncustom of distributing cloth at New Year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Unfortunately circumstances are still very<br \/>\ndifficult, almost worse than during the war, and do not allow me to do what I<br \/>\nwould have liked. I will only add that I hope that next<br \/>\nyear it will be better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>1 January 1946<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<font size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>DECLARATION TO THE WORKERS<br \/>\nOF SRI AUROBINDO ASHRAM<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is my desire to explain to the workers the<br \/>\nspecial relationship that exists between them and me as compared with the&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 176<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>ordinary relationship between employer and<br \/>\nemployees. It is also my desire that having understood this special relationship<br \/>\nthe workers should always keep this understanding before them in all their<br \/>\ndeliberations and in all the joint demands which they make to me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>This special relationship is as follows: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>(a) The work in the Ashram is not done for<br \/>\nprofit, as is well known. Therefore during the war when things became expensive<br \/>\nand difficult for everyone, it became so for me too, without my income<br \/>\nincreasing in any way by the fact of the same circumstances. Industrial and<br \/>\ncommercial concerns made more profits and so could easily increase the wages,<br \/>\nbut here in the Ashram only the expenses went on increasing. In spite of this,<br \/>\nin view of the difficulties of the workers I gave them regular increments and<br \/>\ndearness allowances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>(b) There have been times when there was<br \/>\nno work for some workers, but unlike business firms I have never dismissed<br \/>\nworkers but have always endeavoured to find some other work for them to do. It<br \/>\nhas always been my policy not to send away, for want of work, workers who have<br \/>\nserved faithfully. I could have easily done so and could have even closed down<br \/>\nall the works without any serious hardship to the Ashram. But by doing so I<br \/>\nwould have only increased the general misery which is already so great, and<br \/>\nthat I did not want to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>(c) There are a good number of workers who<br \/>\nhave worked for me for many long years and have served me with devotion and<br \/>\nfaithfulness and who besides considering me as their employer have also looked<br \/>\nto me as their protector, of them and their families. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>(d) On the whole the workers of the Ashram<br \/>\nhave so far worked more or less as members of a family with me as their head,<br \/>\nand this special relationship has no doubt brought benefit to many of them. I<br \/>\nwould like to preserve this relationship and make it the foundation for all my<br \/>\ndealings with the workers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>With these points in view, it is suggested<br \/>\nthat the workers &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 177<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>of the Ashram should form a separate<br \/>\nsyndicate of their own, since they stand with regard to their employer in a<br \/>\ndifferent position from other workers, as has already been explained. This<br \/>\nsyndicate might be affiliated to the general body of workers, but would<br \/>\nmaintain its own line of action and conduct. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is further suggested that this<br \/>\nsyndicate of Ashram workers should elect a committee which represents the<br \/>\nvarious shades of opinion among the workers. This committee would receive and<br \/>\nconsider the demands put forward by the workers and, having deliberated and<br \/>\narrived at a decision that it considers just and reasonable, would present it<br \/>\nto me for action through their president. My aim is to create a big<br \/>\nfamily in which it will be possible for each one to fully develop his<br \/>\ncapacities and express them. They will function<br \/>\non a co-operative basis of work in common and of collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In the matter of education, what is<br \/>\nnecessary is to arrange for the moral and intellectual instruction and<br \/>\ndevelopment of all, children and adults: various schools, technical instruction<br \/>\nin different vocations, classes for music and dance, a cinema hall where<br \/>\neducational films will be shown, a lecture hall, a library, a reading room,<br \/>\nvaried physical education, a <span class=\"SpellE\">sportsground<\/span> and so on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Each one can choose the kind of activity<br \/>\nthat is most suitable to his nature and will receive the required training.<br \/>\nEven small gardens will be provided where those who like cultivation can grow<br \/>\nflowers, fruits and vegetables. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In the matter of health, there will be<br \/>\nregular medical visits, a hospital, a dispensary, a nursing home for the<br \/>\nsegregation of contagious cases. A department of hygiene will have the<br \/>\nexclusive function of inspecting all public and private buildings to see that<br \/>\nthe most rigorous rules of cleanliness are observed everywhere and by all.
