\u201c[For the Ashram] there has never been, at any time, a mental plan, a
\nfixed programme or an organisation decided beforehand. The whole thing has
\ntaken birth, grown and developed as a living being by a movement of
\nconsciousness (Chit-tapas<\/span>) constantly maintained,
\nincreased and fortified.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

That is to say, the movement of
\nconsciousness has never ceased at any moment. It is not that a \u201cmovement of
\ncreation\u201d was started and then stopped and then again started <\/span>―<\/span> constantly the consciousness is
\nrecreating, so to say, continues its creation; it is not a thing which has been
\ndone and which grows out of what has been done. It continues to be like this.
\nThe consciousness is at work constantly, and not as a continuation of what was
\nbefore, but as a result of what it sees at each instant. In mental movement,
\nthere is the consequence of what has been done before <\/span>―<\/span> it is not that, it is the consciousness
\nseeing constantly what is to be done. It is extremely important to understand,
\nbecause it is like this that it continues to work, for everything. It is not at
\nall a \u201cformation\u201d whose growth must be looked after: the consciousness at each
\nsecond follows \u2013 it follows its own movement… That permits everything; it is
\njust that which permits miracles, reversals, etc.; it permits everything. It is
\njust the opposite of human creations. And it has been like that, it continues
\nto be like that and it will always be like that as long as I am there.<\/span>\u00b9<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Statistics and calculations are purely
\nmental and here all mental rules are eventually contradicted
\nby the working of the higher force. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am very fond of proper organisation <\/span>―<\/span> if those who organise want sincerely to
\ndo it <\/span>―<\/span> I require only clear and precise information. When this is given and
\nthere is sufficient trust in the Organising Power it is sufficient. The rest

(About bad service in an Ashram department)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The bad service comes always when the
\nproper consciousness is lacking at the head. <\/span><\/p>\n

A clear and precise vision of what is to
\nbe done and a steady, calm and firm will to have it done are the essential
\nconditions for an organisation to be run properly. And as a general rule, never
\nask from others the virtues you do not possess yourself. I have a strong
\nfeeling that in X department the supervision is not what it ought to be. <\/span><\/p>\n

(A sadhak did not want to work more than two hours a day. His supervisor
\nwrote to Mother)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I told him that I was not demanding anything; I work as
\nmuch as I can, for it is in the service of my dear Mother. I cannot insist on
\nanyone else doing the same; only I am informing Mother about what we do. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

You replied very well, but obviously it is
\ndifficult to give conscientiousness to someone who has none and to put heart
\ninto someone who is lazy. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, the disorder is general. The only

\nwithout work in the Ashram; but those who are without work are certainly so

When human passions guide the work, I can
\nonly stand apart as a witness. I am politely informed of what is decided <\/span>―<\/span> never asked for what is to be done. <\/span><\/p>\n

I cannot give orders because if orders
\nwere disobeyed, it would automatically lead to a catastrophe. <\/span><\/p>\n

So there is nothing else to do than to
\nwait patiently for the passions to cool down and.. hope for the best. <\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps some people may wake up to the
\nnecessity of working hard. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nand feelings for me to give an order. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now times are difficult for everybody.
\nThere is war and everybody suffers. <\/span><\/p>\n

Those who have the immense privilege of
\nbeing here quiet and in safety must at least show their gratitude by discarding
\nall petty quarrels and silly grievances. <\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone must do his or her work
\nconscientiously and earnestly, and overcome all obscure selfish movements. <\/span><\/p>\n

I know at the present moment cooperation and coordination are essential
\nfor the Ashram; I try my best but fail miserably. Perhaps it is the same story
\nwith every one of us.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Do not take it as a personal affair.
\nDisharmony and confusion are spread all over the world because of the
\nresistance of the falsehood to the action of the Truth. Here as the action of
\nthe Truth is more conscious and concentrated, the resistance is exasperated.
\nAnd in this great turmoil most of the individuals are moved like puppets by the
\nforces in the conflict. <\/span><\/p>\n

As for the conditions in the Ashram, it is
\nas you say and probably worse. I shall say like Sri Aurobindo: unless the
\nconsciousness changes nothing can really be done. <\/span><\/p>\n

You will interfere <\/span>―<\/span> and it is good as an example and a
\ndemonstration <\/span>―<\/span> but the next day it will become worse.<\/span><\/p>\n

We cannot even call down the Truth to
\nmanifest. The falsehood is so widely and deeply spread that the result would be
\na wholesale destruction. Yet the Grace is infinite, it may find out a way. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo says that he wishes to make
\nan endeavour to set things right by yogic means rather than by steps of an
\nexterior kind; but for this it is necessary that things should go on for some
\ntime as they are at present. For that your cooperation will be necessary and he
\nis sure that he can count on your goodwill to make the necessary effort towards
\nthat end.<\/span><\/p>\n

It remains absolutely true that I am
\nmostly busy with something I consider more important than exterior organisation
\n<\/span>―<\/span> for the moment <\/span>―<\/span> and that is why I expect each one to do
\nhis duty to the best of his capacity and with his eyes fixed upon the magnitude
\nof the Divine’s work which will surely help him in his personal difficulties. <\/span><\/p>\n

Times are hard for everybody and in
\neverything <\/span>―<\/span> but it is surely to teach us to overcome our limitations. <\/span><\/p>\n

(For some time Mother was supposed to have retired from day-to-day

This is very interesting but not
\nunexpected. Since I have \u201cretired\u201d, each one seems to do according to his own
\nideas without correlation with the others and <\/span>―<\/span> under the pretext of not disturbing me <\/span>―<\/span> without consulting or even informing me! <\/span><\/p>\n

Although by my own means I know more or
\nless what is going on, I simply smile and do not interfere. Each one must learn
\nby experience. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am waiting for the day when order will
\nconquer disorder and harmony be the master of confusion. I am behind all effort
\nin this direction.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Needless to say that my force and help is intensely
\nwith all those who, along with me, are fighting this state of affairs. And all

I am blaming nothing, nor anybody and know
\nthat each one does the best he can. It is evident that the job is very

To do properly the work of the Ashram one
\nmust be strong and plastic enough to know how to utilise the inexhaustible
\nEnergy which is backing you all. <\/span><\/p>\n

I expect everybody here to rise to the
\nheight of the needs. <\/span><\/p>\n

If we are not able to do even that much,
\nhow can we hope to be ready for the descent of the Light of Truth when it will
\ncome to manifest upon earth?… <\/span><\/p>\n

When I give work to someone it is not only
\nfor the sake of the work but also as the best means to advance on the path of
\nYoga. When I gave you this work, I was quite aware of your difficulties and
\nshortcomings, but at the same time I knew that if you opened yourself to my
\nhelp and force you would be able to surmount these obstacles and at the same
\ntime to increase your consciousness and open yourself to the Divine’s Grace. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now it is time for you to make a real
\nprogress and to check your outbursts of temper whenever your will is
\ncontradicted. If you want to please me <\/span>―<\/span> and I have no doubt of that <\/span>―<\/span> you will sincerely try to collaborate
\nwith X and to carry on with him the work. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nyou the responsibility of the enterprise, the organisation and the carrying on
\nof it. The plans and projects will have to be shown to me for my sanction. For

\naccording to the instructions you will give him and to fully collaborate,
\nhaving in view that it is Sri Aurobindo’s and my work, and to do his utmost to

Let the work start and be fully organised.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I have no intention of giving posts and
\npositions before something is done and each one proves by acts what he is
\ncapable of doing. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is by the efficiency and the quality of
\nthe work that I will judge the workers. <\/span><\/p>\n

And it is only afterwards that titles can
\nbe given. <\/span><\/p>\n

Never forget that here it is for the
\nperfection of the work that we are striving, not for the satisfaction of the

I do not give positions to the sadhaks <\/span>―<\/span> I give them work; and to all I give an
\nequal opportunity. It is those who prove to be most capable and most sincere,
\nhonest and faithful that have the biggest amount of work and the greatest

Whatever the external circumstances, they

exception, the objective projection of
\nwhat is inside yourself. When in your work you find something giving trouble
\noutside, look within and you will find in yourself the corresponding

\nany undue importance. They are mere necessities in the present condition of the
\nworld, but do not correspond to any deep reality. <\/span><\/p>\n

2) In the actualities of life the power of
\na man does not depend on an official title, but on the force and the light of
\nhis inner consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n

I have read your letters and am well
\nsatisfied with the confidence you have in your capacity to do the work. It is
\ntrue that you have the capacity, but you will agree that there is a difference
\nbetween having the capacity and having the knowledge; and to have the knowledge
\nof a work it must be learned. <\/span><\/p>\n

So you must first learn from those who
\nknow and the best way of learning is to see them do. When you will know and
\nhave proved your thoroughness, steadiness and faithfulness in doing the work,
\nthen I will entrust you with the full responsibility and give you the entire
\nmanagement of the work.  <\/span><\/p>\n

There are honest people but they do not
\nhave the capacity to work. There are capable people but they are not honest in
\ntheir work. When I find someone both honest and capable he becomes very
\nprecious. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here every work represents something of
\nthe universe. When a new work is started here, new problems of the world come
\nin. That is why I do not invite new problems, but if they come I do not avoid
\nthem. I have to bring down the highest consciousness; for that I must organise
\nbelow and tackle all the problems. <\/span><\/p>\n

Formerly I used to keep control over
\neverything. Nothing would be done without my first knowing and approving of it.
\nAfterwards I adopted a different mode of acting. I withdrew from all the
\ndetails and kept myself at a distance, watching things from above, as it were,
\nand sending the right inspiration to each worker in his own field. <\/span><\/p>\n

This change was necessary for the worker’s
\nspiritual development. He has to become aware of my influence inwardly. But he
\ncan receive it only if all the workers collaborate. Without collaboration the
\nright inspiration will not be effective. The action from above has a wide
\nsweep: it covers all the departments and is one harmonious whole. If walls are
\nset up in the field of work, dividing and breaking it up, the work can never be
\naccording to the spiritual Will. <\/span><\/p>\n

So bear this in mind: no collaboration, no
\nright working. <\/span><\/p>\n

There is no question at all of \u201cposition\u201d <\/span>―
\n<\/span>nor of prestige. X
\nhas a lot of knowledge and experience of the stage that we<\/span> do not have. <\/span>

Each department has necessarily a
\ndiscipline and you must follow the discipline of your department. <\/span><\/p>\n

Personal feelings, grudges and
\nmisunderstandings must never interfere with the work which is done as a service
\nto the Divine and not for human interests. <\/span><\/p>\n

Your service to the Divine must be
\nscrupulously honest, disinterested and unselfish, otherwise it has no value. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here nobody can be an exclusive head everyone

In human life the cause of all
\ndifficulties, all discords, all moral sufferings, is the presence in everyone
\nof the ego with its desires, its likes and dislikes. Even in a disinterested
\nwork which consists in helping others, until one has learned to overcome the
\nego and its demands, until one can force it to keep calm and quiet in one
\ncorner, the ego reacts to everything that displeases it, starts an inner storm
\nthat rises to the surface and spoils all the work. <\/span><\/p>\n

This work of overcoming the ego is long,
\nslow and difficult; it demands constant alertness and sustained effort. This
\neffort is easier for some and more difficult for others. <\/span><\/p>\n

We are here in the Ashram to do this work
\ntogether with the help of Sri Aurobindo’s knowledge and force, in an attempt to
\nrealise a community that is more harmonious, more united, and consequently much
\nmore effective in life. <\/span><\/p>\n

As long as I was physically present among
\nyou all, my presence was helping you to achieve this mastery over the ego and
\nso it was not necessary for me to speak to you about it individually very
\noften. <\/span><\/p>\n

But now this effort must become the basis
\nof each individual’s existence, more especially for those of you who have a
\nresponsible position and have to take care of others. The leaders must always
\nset the example, the leaders must always practise the virtues they demand from
\nthose who are in their care; they must be understanding, patient, enduring,
\nfull of sympathy and  <\/span><\/p>\n

warm and friendly goodwill, not out of
\negoism to win friends for themselves, but out of generosity to be able to

That is what I am asking of you now, so
\nthat you can face your responsibilities as you should. And then you will find
\nthat where you used to feel disorder and disunity, they have vanished, and
\nharmony, peace and joy have taken their place. <\/span><\/p>\n

You seem to forget that by the fact that
\nyou are living in the Ashram, it is neither for yourself nor for a boss that
\nyou are working, but for the Divine. Your life must be entirely consecrated to the
\nDivine Work and cannot be governed by petty human considerations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whatever is done here, must be done in a
\nspirit of complete collaboration with one single aim in view <\/span>―<\/span> the service of the Divine. <\/span><\/p>\n

A community life must necessarily have a
\ndiscipline in order that the weaker may not be maltreated by the stronger; and
\nthis discipline ought to be respected by all those who wish to live in that

But for the community to be happy it is
\nnecessary that this discipline should be determined by someone or by those who
\nhave the greatest broadness of mind and, if possible, by him or <\/span><\/p>\n

For the earth to be happy, power should be

\nthe Divine Will is negligible and these have necessarily no ambition. <\/span><\/p>\n

To tell the truth, when the hour comes for
\nthis realisation, this will come about quite naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n

The duty of each one is to prepare oneself
\nfor that as completely as one can. <\/span><\/p>\n

I agree that the gate condition is rather distressing.
\nBut to write down instructions is very difficult because of all the details
\nthat would have to be mentioned. <\/span><\/p>\n

To the gate-keepers and inmates of the
\nLibrary House<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

I have repeatedly said that the \u201csoup verandah<\/span>\u201d must be kept neat and tidy, free from all
\npersonal objects (cups, tumblers, flasks, shoes and sandals, etc.) straying all
\nover the place. It is the most unbecoming sight to give to the visitors
\nentering through the Ashram gate. <\/span><\/p>\n

I expect not to have to repeat it another
\ntime, and that this order will be carried out scrupulously. <\/span><\/p>\n

Gate Duty <\/span><\/p>\n

The Mother considers the duty of the
\ngate-keeper very important and of great responsibility.
\nThis duty should be performed with care and vigilance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors and those coming for inquiry or
\nbusiness should be received with due courtesy, if required offered a seat, and
\ngiven the necessary information or possible assistance. No distinction should

For any out-of-the-ordinary inquiry, the
\nsecretary should be approached. <\/span><\/p>\n

It will be within the right of the
\ngate-keeper to request people waiting in the gate area without purpose or
\ngathering in groups, to leave the place. He also should not enter into long
\nconversations with other members of the Ashram, nor should he indulge himself
\nin writing, reading or doing anything else than to concentrate on his duty. <\/span><\/p>\n

No unauthorised person should be allowed
\nto go into the Ashram compound without permission. <\/span><\/p>\n

Servants are expected not to touch the
\nfilter. They should take water from the cycle-house. In case of need the
\ninmates should accompany the servants. <\/span><\/p>\n

The gate area should be kept quiet and
\ntidy. <\/span><\/p>\n

The gate should not be left in charge of
\nany other than those appointed for the work.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mother wants that the people
\nresponsible for receiving the visitors should always be very polite and gentle
\nin their behaviour towards them. High and low, young and old, whether they are
\nwell-dressed or ill-clad, all should always be received properly with
\nbenevolence and good behaviour. It is not necessary that the better dressed
\npeople may be more fit for being received well in this Ashram. It should not be
\nthat we give more care to the people with a motor car than to an ordinary man
\nlooking like a beggar. We must never forget that they are as much human as we
\nare and we have no right to think that  we are at the top of the scale. <\/span><\/p>\n

And our politeness should not be merely an
\nouter form, stiff politeness, so to say. It must be something coming from
\nwithin. Whatever may be the difficulties and whatever may be the circumstances <\/span>―<\/span> Mother fully knows even to the minutest<\/span> detail the circumstances, when we lose our temper
\nand get irritated in our work, and knowing that fully well she says <\/span>―<\/span> whatever may be the circumstances,
\nrudeness or curt behaviour is never permissible.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are difficulties in our way, but
\nMother says that as a rule our difficulties and our troubles are always such
\nthat we do have the capacity of overcoming them. If we can remain at our best
\nwe shall always be able to tackle the situation without losing control.
\nRemember, each time we lose control of ourselves, each time we get angry or we
\nhave to use the outer means of keeping discipline, it means that at that moment
\nwe have fallen low and we could not rise up to the situation. In everything, in
\nevery way, it boils down to one rule <\/span>―<\/span> always endeavour to make progress, try to
\nbe your true self. Even if you have not been able to do it today you must be
\nable to do it tomorrow. But the full effect must be there. Never forget in your
\naction that you are representing the Ashram. People will judge the Ashram from
\nyour behaviour. Even if you have to say No, even if you have to reject
\nsomebody’s request, you can do it with all politeness and courtesy. Try to help
\neach one. Even if others are rude to you, it is not a reason for you to do
\nlikewise. If you behave in the same way as the outsiders do, then what is the
