The first edition in French, entitled Pri\u00e8res<\/i><\/span> et M\u00e9ditations<\/span><\/i>
\nde la M\u00e8re<\/i>, was published in 1932. The
\nsecond editions, which included one additional prayer and an introductory note
\nby the Mother, was issued in 1944. The third edition appeared in 1952 and the
\nfourth in 1973, both under the shortened title Pri\u00e8res<\/i><\/span> et M\u00e9ditations<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

English translations of sixty-one of the
\nprayers were published in 1941 under the title Prayers and Meditations. There ate
\nmanuscripts in Sri Aurobindo\u2019s hand for five of the prayers. Fro the rest,
\nthere are manuscripts written by a disciple and extensively revised by Sri
\nAurobindo. He also revised the typed copies of some of the translations, as
\nwell as the proofs at the time of publication. Three more prayers were added to
\nthe second edition, printed in 1962. New editions were issued in 1969, 1971 and
\n1975.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mother wrote an introductory note for
\nthe first edition, which she dated \u201cSeptember 1941\u201d. It was recopied for the
\nfirst translation of the entire text, published in 1948. This second note,
\ndated \u201c1941-1948\u201d, is reproduced in facsimile at the beginning of the present
\nvolume. The introductory note to the 1944 edition is also reproduced in
\nfacsimile, with a translation on the facing page.<\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned in the Publisher\u2019s Note, this
\nvolume is a new translation of the text, with the exception of the prayers
\ntranslated or revised by Sri Aurobindo. An appendix is included which contains
\nfour letters by Sri Aurobindo. Prayers and Meditation<\/i> is Volume One
\nof the Collected Works of the Mother (Centenary Edition).<\/span><\/p>\n
