\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>You see, in the present condition of the
\nworld, circumstances are always difficult. The whole world is in a condition of
\nstrife, conflict, between the forces of truth and light wanting to manifest and
\nthe opposition of all that does not want to change, which represents in the
\npast what is fixed, hardened and refuses to go. Naturally, each individual
\nfeels his own difficulties and is faced by the same obstacles. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>There is only one way for you. It is a
\ntotal, complete and unconditional surrender. What I mean by that is the giving
\nup not only of your actions, work, ambitions, but also of all your feelings, in
\nthe sense that all that you do, all that you are, is exclusively for the
\nDivine. So, you feel above the surrounding human reactions − not only
\nabove them but protected from them by the wall of the Divine\u2019s Grace. Once you
\nhave no more desires, no more attachments, once you have given up all necessity
\nof receiving a reward from human beings, whoever they are − knowing that
\nthe only reward that is worth getting is the one that comes from the Supreme
\nand that never fails − once you give up the attachment to all exterior
\nbeings and things, you at once feel in your heart this Presence, this Force,
\nthis Grace that is always with you. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And there is no other remedy. It\u2019s the
\nonly remedy, for everybody <\/i>without
\nexception. To all those who suffer, it is the same thing that has to be said:
\nall suffering is the sign that the surrender is not total. Then, when you feel
\nin you a \u201cbang\u201d, like that, instead of saying, \u201cOh, this is bad\u201d or \u201cThis
\ncircumstance is difficult,\u201d you say, \u201cMy surrender is not perfect.\u201d Then it\u2019s
\nall right. And then you feel the Grace that helps you and leads you, and you go
\non. And one day you emerge into that peace that nothing can trouble. You answer
\nto all the contrary forces, the contrary movements, the attacks, the
\nmisunderstandings, the bad wills, with the same smile that comes from full
\nconfidence <\/span>in<\/span><\/span> the Divine Grace. And that is the only <\/i>way out, there is no other. <\/span>
\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This world is a world of conflict,
\nsuffering, difficulty, strain; it is made of it. It has not yet changed,<\/span> it will take some time before changing. And for
\neach one there is a possibility of getting out. If you lean back on the
\npresence of the Supreme Grace, that is the only
\n<\/i>way out. That I have been telling you since two or three days, like that
\nconstantly. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Now?<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What to do? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What? For your
\nwork there is nothing to say. You are doing it perfectly well, exactly as it
\nhas to be done; it is all right. Your work is quite all right. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

That is what I
\nwanted to ask: whether this work is in any manner needed or not? Why should I
\ngo on doing it? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Excellent, go on
\ndoing it. You do it perfectly well. Don\u2019t expect human appreciation −
\nbecause human beings don\u2019t know on what grounds to appreciate something, and,
\nmoreover, when there is something that is superior to them, they don\u2019t like it.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

But where to get
\nsuch a strength?<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Within
\nyou.<\/span><\/span> The Divine
\nPresence is in you. It is in you. You look for it outside; look inside. It is
\nin you. The Presence is there. You want the appreciation of others to get
\nstrength you will never get it. The strength is in you. If you want, you can
\naspire for what seems to you the supreme goal, supreme light, supreme
\nknowledge, supreme<\/span> love. But it is in you −
\notherwise you would never be able to contact it. If you go deep enough inside <\/span>
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

you<\/span><\/span>, you will find it there, like a flame
\nthat is always burning straight up. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And don\u2019t believe that it is so difficult
\nto do. It is because the look is always turned outside that you don\u2019t feel the
\nPresence. But if, instead of looking outside for support, you concentrate and
\nyou pray − inside, to the supreme knowledge − to know at each
\nmoment what is to be done, the way to do it, and if you give all you are, all
\nyou do in order to acquire perfection, you will feel that the support is there,
\nalways guiding, showing the way. And if there is a difficulty, then instead of
\nwanting to fight, you hand it over, hand it over to the supreme wisdom to deal
\nwith it − to deal with all the bad wills, all the misunderstandings, all
\nthe bad reactions. If you surrender completely, it is no more your concern:
\nit\u2019s the concern of the Supreme who takes it up and knows better than anybody
\nelse what is to be done. The only way out, only way out. There, my child. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

One thing is that whatever I do there, it
\nis not liked by my own people. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Your own people
\nare all mixed up, as everybody is. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But my feeling is so strong − not only
\nstrong but it is as clear as daylight, as if I am just sitting in your presence
\n− that I do not do anything myself. This is such a great, clear
\nexperience to me for all these years. Whatever is being done by me, it is being
\ndone by some Force and not by me at all. And it gets it done, but then the\u2026 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What
\n!<\/span><\/span> You expect the
\nworld to understand that ?<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

No. They may not
\nunderstand,<\/span> I don\u2019t want any credit for that. But you
\nsee, the obstacles and the\u2026 <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

If you consider this:
\nthat I can understand and know, then you have my full support. I never told you
\nthat you were doing wrong, did I? Now, once and for all you must understand
\nthat unless people are true yogis, out of the ego, completely surrendered to
\nthe Supreme, they can\u2019t understand. How could they? They see with all the
\nexterior eyes and knowledge; they see exterior things and appearances. They
\ndon\u2019t see the inside. When we have stopped expecting appreciation from the outside, that is from human beings,<\/span> we have no reason to
\ncomplain. They appreciate, so much the better for them. They don\u2019t appreciate,
\nit doesn\u2019t matter. It\u2019s their own<\/span> look-out. We do
\nthings not to please them,<\/span> we do things because we
\nfeel that that is to be done. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I have never expected appreciation,
\nMother. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps things are
\ncoming to compel you to take up that position − because that is the
\nliberation, that is the true liberation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Not from ego, but I am a <\/span><\/i>sadhu<\/span><\/span> by
\nnature. I don\u2019t need anything at all. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is all right,
\nbut also you must not need the appreciation of your own family. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With all my failings and weaknesses, I
\ndon\u2019t need anything at all. I don\u2019t need any appreciation. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then you can\u2019t
\nsuffer. Because the only thing that you need is the support
\nof the Divine, and you have it.<\/span> Then you can\u2019t suffer. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But I am suffering very much. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, there is a
\nconflict in your being. One part of your consciousness <\/span>knows<\/span><\/span> but there is still one part that is the
\nslave of circumstances. <\/span>

\nbeen coming upon you for the supreme and the total liberation.<\/span> And if
\nyou take it as the expression of the Grace, you will see the result. Peace, a
\npeace that nothing can disturb, perfect equanimity and a strength that never
\nfails. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Take it as a new birth today. The new life that is beginning.<\/span>  <\/span><\/p>\n

\n August 1967<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I took my seat, it was almost time,
\nperhaps half a minute before, and all of a sudden, without preparation, like
\nthat, like a hammer blow: a descent so powerful − completely immobile
\n− of something\u2026 It was as though Sri Aurobindo spoke to me at the same
\ntime (because the definition came at the same time as the experience: it was a
\nvision that was not a vision, it was wholly concrete) and the word was: golden peace<\/i>. But so strong! And then it
\ndid not move. During the whole half-hour, it did not move. It is something new
\nthat I had never felt before. I cannot say\u2026 It was perceived, but not like an
\nobjective vision. And spontaneously, other persons told me that as soon as they
\nwere seated for meditation (gesture of
\nmassive descent)<\/i>,<\/span> something came down with a
\ntremendous power, completely immobile, and a feeling of peace that they had
\nnever felt in their life. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Golden peace.<\/span> And
\nit is true,<\/span> it gave the impression of the golden
\nsupramental light. But it was\u2026 a peace !<\/span> Concrete, you
\nknow, not the negation of disorder and activity, no: concrete, concrete peace.
\nI did not want to stop. The time was over,<\/span> still I
\nremained two minutes, three minutes. When I stopped, it was gone. And it has
\nmade a great difference for the body − the body itself − such a
\ndifference that when it had gone, I felt quite uneasy,<\/span>
\nI needed half a minute to regain my equilibrium. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It came and it went away. It came for the
\nmeditation and then it went away. For more than half an hour,
\nthirty-five minutes.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And in the evening, at the balcony,\u00b9<\/span> there was a crowd. I believe it was the biggest crowd
\nthat we have ever had: it spread out into all the streets; as far as I could
\nsee, the streets were <\/span>full<\/span><\/span> of people. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b9On August 15, Sri Aurobindo\u2019s birthday, Mother gave
\nDarshan by standing for several minutes on the balcony of her upstairs room and
\nlooking upon those assembled on the streets below.<\/font><\/span> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\n Then I came out, and as I came
\nout, there arose from this crowd like a\u2026 something between an imploring, a
\nprayer and a protest about the condition the world is in, particularly this
\ncountry. And that rose up in waves. I looked at it, and then (it was extremely
\ninsistent) I said to myself: \u201cIt is not my day, it is Sri Aurobindo\u2019s day.\u201d I
\nwent like this (gesture of withdrawal<\/i>)
\nand I put Sri Aurobindo in front. And when he was put in front, standing in
\nfront he simply said, simply: \u201cThe Lord knows best what he is doing.\u201d (Mother laughs<\/i>) Immediately, I began to
\nsmile (I did not laugh, but I began to smile) and there came the same peace as
\nin the morning. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>There you are. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThe Lord knows best what he is doing\u201d,
\nwith his most perfect sense of humour. And immediately everything became calm.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>What must be done to pull the country out
\nof its difficulty ?<\/span> Sri Aurobindo<\/span>
\nhas foreseen all the troubles and he has given the solution. Just now we are
\napproaching his Centenary; it seems arranged, you know, divinely arranged,
\nbecause this would be a wonderful occasion to spread his teaching all over the
\ncountry: the teaching, the practical teaching, his<\/span>
\nteaching about <\/span>India<\/span>, how to organise <\/span>India<\/span>, the mission of <\/span>India<\/span>. It seems to me that taking the Centenary
\nas an occasion, his teaching could be spread all over the country with a little
\nmore organising<\/span> − so that his ideas get spread.
\nThose people who are interested can take it up and teach it, hold meetings and
\ngive the light and the knowledge to the people. It is a wonderful occasion. And
\nit is only this that gives a clue to all these difficulties. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>About all that has happened and all that
\nis happening now, he has said clearly that to go back to it is useless. We must
\ngive the country its true position, that is, the position of relying on the
\nDivine. Naturally, this is at the other end of what people try to believe now.
\nBut Sri Aurobindo explains it in such a way that even<\/span>
\nthose who are against it can agree. You understand? He has found a way of saying
\nit which can be understood by everybody. That\u2019s the only solution, as far as I
\ncan see; it is the only solution. All the rest will mean complication,
\ncontradiction and fighting. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Just now we have two years in front of us
\nto organise a kind of demonstration of what he was teaching. And this is above
\npolitics, you see. It is not a question of party, it\u2019s not that: because some
\nare for it, others will naturally not be. It is above all politics. It is to
\norganise the country beyond politics. And it is the only way. In politics it is
\nalways fight and ugly fight − ugly. And it has become so bad. He was
\ntelling me always that things would become worse and worse, because it is the <\/span>end<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/i>of this age. We are entering into an age
\nwhere things must be organised differently. It is a difficult time because of
\nthat.  <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Because we know what will come, we can help to
\nmake it come sooner and with less turmoil. There is no hope in going backwards;
\nit would make things last endlessly. We must go forward, absolutely, and go
\nbeyond, beyond party. And nobody can explain that better than Sri Aurobindo,
\nbecause he was so much, so much <\/i>beyond
\nparty; he saw the advantages and disadvantages of all ties and he stated them
\nexactly. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If you read carefully what he has written
\n− so much − you will find the answer to all these questions. And at
\nthe same time you will know that you will have the full support of the Divine
\nPower. The Power that was behind him is behind this transformation. It is time
\nfor transformation. We can\u2019t cling to the past. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The best way to go beyond politics is to
\nspread the message of Sri Aurobindo. Because he is no more a political element
\nwanting to take power; there are only his ideas and ideals. And, of course, if
\npeople could understand and realise his programme, the country could be very
\nstrong, very strong. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Those who understand the teaching can take
\nup the work of organising and spreading it. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But Mother, unless Mother\u2019s children come
\ninto the government\u2026 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(Mother laughs<\/i>) They will break. And they
\nthemselves will feel so restricted. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If there is a man who feels like going in
\nfor politics, that is different; but I think the others will be stronger
\nwithout being inside. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But the government will be there in any
\ncase. If Mother..<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But they must be
\npolitical people in temperament.  <\/span><\/p>\n

\nideas, by duties also − unless we prepare a government that has no party,
\na government that admits all ideas because it is above parties. party<\/span> is limitation; it is like a box: you go into the box (Mother laughs<\/i>). Of course, if there were
\nsome people who had the courage to be in the government without a party \u201cWe
\nrepresent no party !<\/span> We represent <\/span>India<\/span><\/i>\u201d that would be magnificent. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Pull the consciousness up, up, above
\nparty. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And then, naturally, certain people who
\ncouldn\u2019t come into political parties − that !<\/span> that<\/span> is truly working for tomorrow. Tomorrow it will be like
\nthat. All this turmoil is because the country must take the lead,<\/span>
\nmust go above all these old political habits. Government
\nwithout party.<\/span> Oh, it would be magnificent !<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
