On these days do the gods respond more to human aspirations?<br \/>\nThirdly, what is the connection between the inner truth and the external<br \/>\nfunctions of these festivals? Lastly, what should be our attitude towards these<br \/>\nfestivals? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Men like<br \/>\nfestivals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>9 November 1969<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>As an answer to my letter on the<br \/>\nsignificance of festivals you wrote to me: \u201cMen like festivals.\u201d Does it then mean<br \/>\nthat they are men\u2019s fancy and<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>whim ? <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 14<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:10.0pt'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" noshade align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Have they no meaning and no utility ? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is men who give<br \/>\na meaning to festivals in order to legitimate their presence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>21 November 1969<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><a name=\"1\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>KRISHNA<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><b> AND RADHA<\/b><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Krishna<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> represents both the universal Godhead and<br \/>\nthe immanent Godhead, he whom one can meet within one\u2019s being and in all that<br \/>\nconstitutes the manifested world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>And do you want to know why he is always represented as a child? It is because<br \/>\nhe is in constant progression. To the extent that the world is perfected, his<br \/>\nplay is also perfected &#8722; what was the play of yesterday will no longer be<br \/>\nthe play of tomorrow; his play will become more and more harmonious, benign and<br \/>\njoyful to the extent that the world becomes capable of responding to it and<br \/>\nenjoying it with the Divine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Krishna<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u2019s play: a power of progress veiling<br \/>\nitself behind appearances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Krishna<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u2019s play in Matter: beauty, love and joy<br \/>\nare comrades; a play which widens and makes you progress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Krishna<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u2019s play in the physical: the rule of the<br \/>\nAvatar upon <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>earth, that is to<br \/>\nsay, the <span class=\"SpellE\">realisation<\/span> of the new divine world.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 15<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:10.0pt'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" noshade align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Can you tell me whether <span class=\"SpellE\">Radha<\/span> actually existed? Volumes are being written to prove that<br \/>\nshe did not. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Surely she has<br \/>\nlived and is still living. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span class=\"SpellE\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Radha\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> consciousness <span class=\"SpellE\">symbolises<\/span><br \/>\nperfect attachment to the Divine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><a name=\"2\">KALI, MAHAKALI, MAHALAKSHMI, MAHASARASWATI<\/a><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>When people speak against you, I feel as if<br \/>\na big flame with many tongues is arising in me and the person in front becomes<br \/>\ndocile. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It must be <span class=\"SpellE\">Kali\u2019s<\/span> force which you evoke. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>I want to ask you a question concerned<br \/>\nwith my reaction to the inconsideration and vulgarity in X\u2019s letter about Sri <span class=\"SpellE\">Aurobindo<\/span>. I remember an occasion many years ago when a<br \/>\nlady friend of mine spoke unbecomingly of both of you. I verbally choked her<br \/>\noff at once, but the indignation within me went on burning. It was like a sword<br \/>\nof fire leaping out of my chest, <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 16<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:10.0pt'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" noshade align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>striking and striking through the hours.<br \/>\nMy mind could serve only to direct it accurately; it had itself little part in<br \/>\nthe actual violence. The next day the lady had a terrific attack of <span class=\"SpellE\">diarrhoea<\/span>. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>A similar blaze began<br \/>\nto go out of my chest yesterday on reading Y\u2019s letter. I had no scruple in<br \/>\ndirecting it at his journal as if to consume its future to ashes. But although<br \/>\nI also struck out at Y himself as if to destroy him, I did not encourage the<br \/>\nfiery onslaught. I started wondering if it was right to attack like that a<br \/>\nperson. At times I thought I was perfectly justified. At other times it seemed<br \/>\nto me that I should offer my sword of fire to you and Sri <span class=\"SpellE\">Aurobindo<\/span><br \/>\nand leave it to you both to use it instead of myself <span class=\"SpellE\">concentratedly<\/span><br \/>\ndirecting it at Y. I shall be thankful if I can have some words of guidance<br \/>\nfrom you. Please keep in mind that I am not talking of a mere outburst of<br \/>\nanger: some force appears to be there which wants to destroy and which feels it<br \/>\nhas the power to destroy. Of course I would never think of using it for my own<br \/>\nprivate ends. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is evidently<br \/>\nthe working of the Kali force that has lit and is directing this fire in you.<br \/>\nThere is nothing wrong in its action; it is not an anger personal to you but the<br \/>\nwrath of a divine power and it must be allowed to act; in fact, I think you<br \/>\ncould not stop it from burning in you even if you wanted to stop it. This man<br \/>\nhas drawn it on himself and there is nothing wrong in what is happening, he<br \/>\nalone is responsible. Of course, it must not be used for any personal aim or in<br \/>\nany self-regarding way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>8 October 1950<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\u201c When she [ <span class=\"SpellE\">Mahakali<\/span> ] is allowed to intervene in her strength, then in<br \/>\none moment are broken like things <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 17<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:10.0pt'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" noshade align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>without<br \/>\nconsistence the obstacles that <span class=\"SpellE\">immobilise<\/span> or the<br \/>\nenemies that assail the seeker.\u201d\u00b9 \u2013 Sri <span class=\"SpellE\">Aurobindo<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>How is the<br \/>\nintervention of the <span class=\"SpellE\">Mahakali<\/span> Force felt ?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is felt as if<br \/>\nsomething swift, sudden, decisive and imperative. When it intervenes, it has a<br \/>\nkind of divine or <span class=\"SpellE\">supramental<\/span> sanction behind it and<br \/>\nis like a fiat against which there is no appeal. What is done cannot be<br \/>\nreversed or undone. The adverse forces may try, may even touch or invade, but<br \/>\nthey retire baffled and it is seen as soon as they withdraw, that the present<br \/>\nground has remained intact &#8722; it is felt even in the attack. Also, the<br \/>\ndifficulties that were strong before, if touched by this fiat, lose their<br \/>\npower, their verisimilitude destroyed, or they become weak shadows that come<br \/>\nonly to flicker and fade away.
