Control in all things is good. The<br \/>\nBhikkhu who controls himself entirely is delivered from all suffering. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nman who is master over his hands, his feet and his tongue, who controls himself<br \/>\nwholly, who delights in meditation, who is calm and leads a solitary life, can<br \/>\nbe called a Bhikkhu. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nBhikkhu who is master over his tongue and is moderate in speech, who is modest,<br \/>\nwho luminously interprets the Doctrine, in truth his words are as sweet as<br \/>\nhoney. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nBhikkhu who lives by the Doctrine, who delights in the Doctrine, who meditates<br \/>\non the Doctrine, who knows the Doctrine thoroughly, surely cannot fall away<br \/>\nfrom the Doctrine. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nBhikkhu should not treat his own progress (in wisdom and goodness) lightly, nor<br \/>\nenvy the progress of others; for the Bhikkhu who is envious cannot achieve<br \/>\nconcentration. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Even<br \/>\nif the progress he has made is slight, the Bhikkhu should not despise it; if<br \/>\nhis life is pure and his effort persevering, the gods themselves shall praise<br \/>\nhim for it.<\/span><\/i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page -289<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Courier New\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>One<br \/>\nwho is not attached to name and form, who does not think, \u201cThis belongs to me\u201d,<br \/>\nand who does not grieve over what does not exist, he, in truth, is called a<br \/>\nBhikkhu.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nBhikkhu who lives a life of loving kindness and who is filled with faith in the<br \/>\nteaching of the Enlightened One, that Bhikkhu will attain the peace of Nirvana,<br \/>\nthe supreme bliss from which every conditioned element has vanished. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Empty<br \/>\nthis boat, O Bhikkhu; once lightened, the boat of your body will sail more<br \/>\nlightly and having rejected desire and hatred you shall enter Nirvana. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Break<br \/>\nthe five bonds (belief in the ego, doubt, belief in vain rites and ceremonies,<br \/>\ncraving and bad will). Renounce these five other bonds (the desire to live in<br \/>\nthe world of forms, the desire to live in the subtle world, pride, restlessness<br \/>\nand ignorance). Cultivate these five (faith, energy, mindfulness, meditation,<br \/>\nand wisdom). The Bhikkhu who is thus five times free is said to be \u201che who has<br \/>\ncrossed over the flood\u201d. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Meditate,<br \/>\nO Bhikkhus, do not be negligent. Your minds should not turn towards the<br \/>\npleasures of the senses; for if by negligence you swallowed a red-hot iron<br \/>\nball, when you felt the burning you would lament, crying, \u201cOh, how painful it<br \/>\nis!\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>For<br \/>\none without knowledge there is no meditation; without meditation there is no<br \/>\nknowledge. One in whom there is both meditation and knowledge is near to<br \/>\nNirvana.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 290<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Courier New\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nBhikkhu who has entered the abode of emptiness, the Bhikkhu of serene mind,<br \/>\nenjoys delight beyond the human, in the clear vision of the Doctrine.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Each<br \/>\ntime that he concentrates on the appearance and disappearance of all<br \/>\nconditioned things, he enjoys the happiness and the delight of those who have<br \/>\nattained immortality. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>These<br \/>\nthings are for the wise Bhikkhu the very basis of the religious life: mastery<br \/>\nof the senses, contentment, conduct according to the code of discipline,<br \/>\nassociation with noble friends who lead a life of constant purity. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nBhikkhu should be cordial, kind and polite; thus in the fullness of his joy, he<br \/>\nwill put an end to suffering. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Just<br \/>\nas the jasmine sheds its faded petals, so also the Bhikkhu sheds desire and<br \/>\nhatred. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Calm<br \/>\nin action, calm in speech, calm in mind, serene, emptied of all earthly<br \/>\nappetites, this Bhikkhu is called \u201cThe Serene One\u201d. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Let<br \/>\nhim arouse himself, let him examine himself; thus self-guarded and vigilant,<br \/>\nthe Bhikkhu will live in happiness. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In<br \/>\ntruth, one is one&#8217;s own protector, one&#8217;s own refuge. Know therefore how to<br \/>\ncontrol yourself as the horse-dealer controls a noble steed. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Filled<br \/>\nwith gladness and faith by the teaching of the <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 291<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Courier New\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Buddha,<br \/>\nthe Bhikkhu attains the state of perfect peace, cessation of all compounded<br \/>\nexistence. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\nyoung Bhikkhu who consecrates himself to the Teaching of the Enlightened One,<br \/>\nillumines this world like the moon coming forth from behind the clouds.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>One piece of advice given here is that one should always be kind.<br \/>\nIt should not be mistaken for the sort of advice people normally give. It says<br \/>\nsomething interesting, even very interesting. My comment is: Always be kind and<br \/>\nyou will be free from suffering, always be contented and happy, and you will<br \/>\nradiate your quiet happiness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is particularly noticeable that all the digestive functions are<br \/>\nextremely sensitive to an attitude that is critical, bitter, full of ill-will,<br \/>\nto a sour judgment. Nothing disturbs the functioning of the digestion more than<br \/>\nthat. And it is a vicious circle: the more the digestive function is disturbed,<br \/>\nthe more unkind you become, critical, dissatisfied with life and things and<br \/>\npeople. So you can&#8217;t find any way out. And there is only one cure: to<br \/>\ndeliberately drop this attitude, to absolutely forbid yourself to have it and<br \/>\nto impose upon yourself, by constant self-control, a deliberate attitude of<br \/>\nall-comprehending kindness.
