Now<br \/>\na half-truth is a few degrees more mischievous than absolute<br \/>\nerror. It is the devil himself in the disguise of an angel.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nThe Practical Man <\/i> : But surely, Professor, half-truths are<br \/>\nthe preparation for whole truths. And mankind must have<br \/>\nsomething to go by. We are not all College Professors who can<br \/>\nwait comfortably in our studies for Truth to call on us at her<br \/>\nleisure. I have got to get to my place of business and, if motor<br \/>\ncars have not been invented, I must use bike or tram car.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>Professor <\/i> : There you are, my friend, in possession of a<br \/>\nmetaphor and under the delusion that you have got an argument.<br \/>\nHalf-truths are the greatest enemies of whole truths. Mankind gets<br \/>\nbesotted with the half-truth and when the whole truth happens<br \/>\nand it cries, &quot;Here&#8217;s this queer-looking idiot and scoundrel who<br \/>\nhas not been properly introduced to me, wanting to turn out my<br \/>\nhalf-truth whom I know and who has helped me for centuries.<br \/>\nOut with the cuckoo! A horse-whip for the bounder!&quot; And out<br \/>\ngoes Truth, lucky if she is only expelled, not burned, garrotted,<br \/>\nmobbed or censorshipped out of existence, and has to take her<br \/>\nnext chance five hundred years later.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>Scientist <\/i> : You are right, Professor. Your tribe, once champions of<br \/>\nprogress, are now the stiffest and blindest opponents<br \/>\nof new Truth going. Torquemada was a babe to you.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>Scientist <\/i> : Well, and what about the Mystic here, who wants<br \/>\nto go back to Paracelsus and Saint Teresa ?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>Mystic <\/i> : I should say rather, to keep unbroken the most<br \/>\nimportant thread in the long and intricately woven cord of evolving knowledge.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nProfessor <\/i> : My friends, I know nothing about mysticism and<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page \u2013 464<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">materialism. These are mere words to me. I know Truth only.<br \/>\nIf Truth is mystic, I cannot help it. If, on the other hand, Truth<br \/>\nturn out to be a rank materialist, a follower of Huxley and Haeckel, who am I<br \/>\nto insist on spiritualising her ? Let us have Truth<br \/>\nas she is and not insist on creating her in our own image.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>The Practical Man <\/i> : How is that to be done ?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nProfessor <\/i> : By inquiry, by dispassionate, disinterested, calm,<br \/>\njudicious, leisurely inquiry. Let us consider everything, accept<br \/>\nonly when acceptance is thoroughly justified, reject only when<br \/>\nwe must, and for God&#8217;s sake let us not rush violently and enthusiastically to<br \/>\npremature conclusions!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nThe Practical Man <\/i> (<i>with levity<\/i>)<i> <\/i> : Why not establish a Society<br \/>\nfor the dispassionate discussion of everything discussable and<br \/>\nthe quiet questioning of everything questionable? It might be<br \/>\nstyled briefly S.D.D.D.Q.Q.Q. or, still better S.D<font size=\"3\">3<\/font> Q3, and, I<br \/>\nbelieve, it would revolutionise knowledge.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nProfessor <\/i> : I have always served the Practical Man in spite<br \/>\nof his gross and numerous limitations. Why not? Let us at least<br \/>\ntry.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nScientist <\/i> (<i>doubtfully<\/i>)<i> <\/i> : What would be the conditions of discussion?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nProfessor <\/i> : Put it like this.<b> <\/b> We agree to consider no question<br \/>\nclosed, not even gravitation, nor the motion of the earth,<br \/>\nnor the necessity and beneficence of the British Government.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nAll <\/i> (<i>in chorus<\/i>)<i> <\/i> : The Press Act, Professor, the Press Act!<br \/>\nSection 124A! Where will be the<br \/>\nfun ? I quite looked forward to the Scientist throwing chemicals at the Mystic<br \/>\nand immediately withering into something infrahuman under the onslaught of the Mystic&#8217;s <i>mohanam<\/i>,<i> stambhanam<\/i> and <i>m&#257;ran<span lang=\"VI\">&#803;<\/span>am<\/i>. Don&#8217;t interfere with<br \/>\nhuman nature.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nProfessor <\/i> : We will provide the fun, but let it be human,<br \/>\ncivilised fun. We must curb the excess of our original semi-ancestors in our humour.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nMystic <\/i> : You can&#8217;t, Professor, and we shouldn&#8217;t. It is a perpetual<br \/>\nand valuable part of Ananda, the joy of existence.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nScientist <\/i> : It can&#8217;t work. We are not gods or angels.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nProfessor <\/i> : There you go making assumptions ! How do you<br \/>\nknow we are not ? Let us at least make the experiment. Obviously,<br \/>\nwith only the four of us, the circle will be incomplete. We<br \/>\nmust have other human specimens. A Jurist now, a Priest, a<br \/>\nHistorian, a Sanscritist, a Doctor, an Attorney, and a few others<br \/>\nthat may occur to me. I know where all these reasoning animals<br \/>\nare to be found. Then, a live Extremist would be an acquisition.<br \/>\nI know one. He is amiable, pleasing and warranted not to bite,<br \/>\nthough his views are fiery and his language, when excited, apt to<br \/>\nbe sulphurous.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i><br \/>\nThe Practical Man <\/i> : No use for him, if we are<b> <\/b> not to question<br \/>\nthe beneficence of the British Government.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>Professor<b> <\/b><\/i> : He will complete us.<b> <\/b> We must be a<br \/>\nrepresentative society.
