He is as firm as a<br \/>\ncelestial pillar, pure as an unmuddied lake; and for him the cycle of births is<br \/>\ncompleted. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Calm<br \/>\nare the thoughts, the words and the acts of one who has liberated himself by<br \/>\nthe true knowledge and has achieved a perfect tranquillity. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The<br \/>\ngreatest among men is he who is not credulous <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 223<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><i><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>but<br \/>\nhas the sense of the Uncreated, who has cut all ties, who has destroyed all<br \/>\noccasion for rebirth.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Whether<br \/>\nvillage or forest, plain or mountain, wherever the adepts may dwell, that place<br \/>\nis always delightful. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Delightful<br \/>\nare the forests which are shunned by the multitude. There, the adept, who is<br \/>\nfree from passion, will find happiness, for he seeks not after pleasure. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>There is a very interesting<br \/>\nsentence here: \u201cHe who is not credulous but has the sense of the Uncreated&#8230;.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>One who is not credulous \u2013 all kinds of<br \/>\nthings can be understood from this word. The first impression is that it refers<br \/>\nto one who does not believe in invisible things without having an experience of<br \/>\nthem, as distinct from people who follow, for example, a particular religion<br \/>\nand have faith in dogmas simply because that is what they have been taught. But<br \/>\nhe \u201chas the sense of the Uncreated\u201d, that is to say, he is in contact with<br \/>\ninvisible things and knows them as they are, by identity. The Dhammapada has<br \/>\ntold us, to begin with, that the greatest of men is he who has no faith in what<br \/>\nis taught but has a personal experience of things that are not visible, he who<br \/>\nis free from all belief and has himself had the experience of invisible things.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Another explanation can also be given: one<br \/>\nwho is not credulous is he who does not believe in the reality of appearances,<br \/>\nin things as we see them, who does not take them for the truth, who knows that<br \/>\nthese are only misleading appearances and that behind them lies a truth that is<br \/>\nto be found and known by personal experience and by identity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>And this makes one reflect on the number<br \/>\nof things, the countless number of things that we believe without any personal<br \/>\nknowledge, simply because we have been taught that they are like that, or<br \/>\nbecause we are accustomed to think they are like that, or because we are<br \/>\nsurrounded by people who believe <\/span><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 224<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><i><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>that things are like that. If we look at all the things that we<br \/>\nbelieve and not only believe but assert with an indisputable authority, \u201cThis<br \/>\nis like this\u201d, \u201cThat, but of course it is like that\u201d, \u201cAnd<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>this thing, yes, it is so&#8230;. \u201cIn truth,<br \/>\nhowever, we know nothing about it, it is simply because we are in the habit of<br \/>\nthinking that they are like that. What are the things that you have experienced<br \/>\npersonally, with which you have had a direct contact, of which you can at least<br \/>\nsay with sincerity, \u201cI am convinced that it is like that, because I have<br \/>\nexperienced it\u201d? Not many. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In reality, if you truly want to have<br \/>\nknowledge, you must begin by making a very important study: verify the things<br \/>\nthat we have been taught, even the most common and the most insignificant. Then<br \/>\nyou will understand why the text says \u201cthe greatest among men\u201d, because I do<br \/>\nnot think that many have made this experiment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Just to find out the number of things we believe<br \/>\nand assert, simply because it is customary to believe and assert them, is<br \/>\nindeed a very interesting discovery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Now go and look into your thought and<br \/>\nconsciousness for all the things that you assert without proof.
