\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIn <\/font>1929, <\/font>
\n\t\t\ton Sundays, the Mother met a
\n\t\t\tsmall group of disciples at
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tthe home of one of them. After a period of meditation she answered
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tany <\/font>.questions <\/font>
\n\t\t\traised by the disciples.
\n\t\t\tPortions of fifteen of these weekly talks, which were <\/i>given in English, were noted down
\n\t\t\tin shorthand by one of those present ; the transcript was elaborated by
\n\t\t\tanother
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tparticipant, and finally revised by Sri Aurobindo for publication. <\/font>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe talks, entitled Conversations of the Mother, <\/i>were first
\n\t\t\tpublished for private circulation towards the end of <\/font>
\n\t\t\t1931. <\/font>
\n\t\t\tIn <\/font>
\n\t\t\t1940 <\/font>
\n\t\t\tthey
\n\t\t\t\t\t\twere made available <\/font>to
\n\t\t\tthe
\n\t\t\t<\/font>
\n\t\t\tpublic as the main part of the
\n\t\t\tbook Words
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tof the Mother. <\/i>This <\/font>
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\twas reprinted <\/font>in
\n\t\t\t<\/font>1943, 1946 <\/font>
\n\t\t\tand <\/font>
\n\t\t\t1949. <\/font>
\n\t\t\tIn <\/font>
\n\t\t\t1956 <\/font>
\n\t\t\tthe
\n\t\t\t\t\t\ttalks were published separately (with a short Foreword by the
\n\t\t\tMother)
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tas Conversations. <\/i>This <\/font>
\n\t\t\tbook was reprinted <\/font>
\n\t\t\tin <\/font>
\n\t\t\t1961, 1966, 1971 <\/font>
\n\t\t\tand
\n\t\t\t<\/font>

\n\t\t\tthe Mother spoke with a group
\n\t\t\tof disciples who met her in the room of the Ashram called "Prosperity". Some of
\n\t\t\t\t\t\ther talks, given in English, were noted down in abbreviated
\n\t\t\tlong-hand ,
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tand afterwards reconstructed. <\/font><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeveral of these talks were first published with the Mother’s
\n\t\t\tapproval
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tin various issues of the monthly Mother India <\/i>and in the
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tannual Sri Aurobindo Circle <\/i>of <\/font>
\n\t\t\t1949. <\/font>
\n\t\t\tA larger collection, entitled
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWords of the Mother: Third Series, <\/i>was published in book-form
\n\t\t\tin

\n\t\t\t"Difficulties in Yoga", is included
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tin the present volume, in which the talks are called Questions

\n\t\t\tin a weekly class with the
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tchildren of the Ashram school, the Mother read from and commented
\n\t\t\t\t\t\ton the Buddhist teachings as contained in the Dhammapada. The Mother based her commentaries on a French translation of the Pali text. The commentaries, given in French, were tape-recorded
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tat the time.

\n\t\t\tDhammapada. <\/i><\/font>A
\n\t\t\tsecond
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tedition was issued in 1974. An English translation was serialised in
\n\t\t\tthe
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tquarterly <\/font>Advent <\/i>
\n\t\t\t<\/font>from November 1960 to
\n\t\t\tFebruary 1965. In the present
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tvolume the translation of the commentaries is a revision of the
\n\t\t\t<\/font>Advent
\n\t\t\t<\/i><\/font>
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tseries; the text of the Dhammapada is a translation of the version
\n\t\t\tof
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBharatidi, with a few revisions in the light of the original text.
