 <\/span>The Soul (the Psychic) <\/span><\/font><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nsoul is that which comes out of the Divine without ever leaving Him and goes
\nback to Him without ever ceasing from manifestation. <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nsoul is the Divine made individual without ceasing to be divine. In the soul
\nthe individual and the Divine are eternally one. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus
\nto find one\u2019s soul is to be united with the Divine. <\/span><\/p>\n

It
\ncan therefore be said that the role of the soul is to make of man a true being.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Theories
\ndiffer according to schools and sects, and each one puts forth excellent
\nreasons to support what it asserts. <\/span><\/p>\n

There
\nis certainly truth in whatever one affirms and any case is not only possible
\nbut has existed in the history of the earth. <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nonly thing I can speak of is my own experience: the soul is divine, an eternal
\nportion of the Supreme Divine and therefore cannot be limited or bound by any
\nlaw whatever, other than its own. <\/span><\/p>\n

These
\nsouls are emanated by the Lord to do His work in the world and each one comes
\nupon earth with a special purpose, for a special action and with a special
\ndestiny, carrying in itself its own law which is imperative for itself alone
\nand cannot be a general law. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus,
\nin the eternity of becoming, any case imaginable or unimaginable must evidently
\nexist. <\/span><\/p>\n

The soul is
\neternal and universal, and all these incapacities <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ncentre of the human being is the psychic which is the dwelling-place of the
\nimmanent Divine. Unification means organisation<\/span> and harmonisation<\/span> of all the parts of the being (mental, vital
\nand physical) around this centre, so that all the activities of the being may
\nbe the correct expression of the will of the Divine Presence. <\/span><\/p>\n

Unless
\nand until the whole of the individual consciousness is organised<\/span>
\naround the central Divine Presence, the movements are fugitive, although
\nrecurrent, and we cannot expect them to have any permanence. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is a
\nproof that your whole being is not united around the central psychic Presence. <\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nis a personal task that each individual must do for himself. The help is always
\nthere but the effectivity<\/span> of its action is in the
\nmeasure of the receptivity and the conscious appeal. <\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nhuman being is made of many different parts and it takes time and conscious
\neffort to harmonise<\/span> and unify all these parts. When
\nyou surrendered, it is not the whole of your being that did so. Little by
\nlittle some other part that had not surrendered came to the surface and the joy
\nof the surrender vanished and was replaced by dullness and indifference. But
\nafter some time this part also gets converted and thus the happy condition
\ncomes back. <\/span><\/p>\n

Your
\nletter has just come, bringing me your problem which, by the way, is the
\nproblem of the life of all human beings, especially when they have reached a
\ncertain degree of inner development but are not yet on the summit of spiritual
\nfreedom through the unification of their being around their conscious soul. For
\nit is the lack of unification which is the cause of all problems. One part of
\nthe being pulls one way, another pulls the other way, sometimes one is stronger
\nand gives a certain orientation to life, sometimes it is the other and then the
\norientation suddenly changes, and the result is an incoherence. And as it is
\nthe unsatisfied <\/i>part which usually
\ncomes to the surface to express its want of satisfaction, so, unless one is a
\nsage, one is never satisfied with the life one leads and always misses the life
\none could have led − whether in one direction or the other.  <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nyour case there is something more. As your soul remains very closely linked
\nwith my being, as the contact with the supramental<\/span>
\nconsciousness grows more and more total and constant, it acts very strongly on
\nyour soul like an almost irresistible attraction. This is what happened in
\n1958. <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nconclude, \u201can easy and pleasant life\u201d can only satisfy the outer being; but
\nwhat answers in the physical being to the soul\u2019s influence needs for its
\nflowering a life more in conformity with the soul\u2019s needs and \u201clanguishes\u201d when
\nit cannot find it. <\/span><\/p>\n

It
\nis because an individual is not made all of one piece, but of many different
\nentities which sometimes even contradict each other; some want the spiritual
\nlife, others are attached to the things of this world. It is a long and
\ndifficult work to reconcile all these parts and unify them. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The force and light received by the
\nmost developed parts gradually spread to the rest of the being by a process of
\nassimilation, and during this period of assimilation the progress of the parts
\nthat are in front seems to be interrupted. This is what Sri Aurobindo<\/span>
\nwas speaking about. <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nfact all your different parts are correct in their argument, and the wisdom is
\nto go deep enough in the consciousness to find the place where they meet and

\nfor the actual action, a smooth, harmonious working is generally better than
\nthe difficulties created by too rigid principles, but that also is not absolute
\n− and the ideal condition is at each occasion to receive in the inner

\npsychic inspiration alone is true. All that comes from the vital and the mind
\nis necessarily mixed with egoism and is arbitrary. One should not act in reaction <\/i>to outer contact, but with an
\nimmutable vision of love and goodwill. Everything else is a mixture which can
\nonly have confused and mixed results, and perpetuate the disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n

It
\nis not the psychic being that suffers for personal reasons, it is the mind, the
\nvital and the ordinary consciousness of ignorant man. This is because the
\ncontact between the outer consciousness and the psychic consciousness is not
\nwell established. He in whom the contact has been well established is always
\nhappy. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nperseverance and ardour<\/span> for the union to be made an
\naccomplished fact, but it never complains and knows how to wait for the hour of

The
\nouter being, left to itself, is not very responsible; it is most often the
\nplaything of the forces of Nature. But the inner or higher being, the deeper
\nconsciousness, is the master and builder of our destiny. That is why it is so important
\nto discover this sovereign consciousness and unite with it in order to put an
\nend to all the incoherences<\/span> of life and all the
\nconflicts of Nature. <\/span><\/p>\n
