Control over what one
\nsays is more important than complete silence. The best is to learn to say what
\nis useful in the most exact and true way possible. <\/span><\/p>\n

\noneself that is the first thing needed, and especially the control over one’s

\nstrength to be able to say things gently and it is always weakness that bursts

\ncrooked tongue, crooked heart: this comes out in speech that looks like honey
\nbut tastes like poison. <\/span><\/p>\n

Every word spoken
\nuselessly is a dangerous gossiping. <\/span><\/p>\n

Every malicious word,
\nevery slander is a degradation of the consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n

And when this slander is
\nexpressed in a vulgar language and gross terms, then that is equivalent to a
\nsuicide <\/span>―<\/span> the suicide of one’s soul. <\/span><\/p>\n

When, in ignorance, one
\nspeaks ill of others, he debases his consciousness and degrades his soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

A respectful and modest
\nsilence is the only attitude befitting a disciple. <\/span><\/p>\n

To cure a critical sense
\nthat manifests by incontinence of speech: <\/span><\/p>\n

1) When you are in this
\nstate, absolutely refuse to speak <\/span>―<\/span> if need be, make it
\nphysically impossible for yourself to speak. <\/span><\/p>\n

2) Study yourself
\nwithout pity and realise<\/span> that you carry in yourself
\nprecisely all the things that you find so ridiculous in others. <\/span><\/p>\n

3) Discover in your
\nnature the opposite way of being (benevolence, humility, goodwill) and insist
\nthat it develop to the detriment of the contrary element. <\/span><\/p>\n

True strength and
\nprotection come from the Divine Presence in the heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you want to keep this
\nPresence constantly in you, avoid carefully all vulgarity in speech, behaviour<\/span> and acts. Do not mistake liberty for licence<\/span> and freedom for bad manners. The thoughts must be
\npure and the aspiration ardent. <\/span><\/p>\n

Be careful always to
\nkeep the living Presence and Protection around you when you speak to people and
\nspeak as little as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n

You need not go to
\napologize. But as your words were misunderstood you do right to resolve to be

\nyou follow it sincerely. <\/span><\/p>\n

Neither too many nor too
\nfew words <\/span>―<\/span> just what is needed. <\/span><\/p>\n

I think the tendency to gather information is not bad? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is bad <\/i>and harmful and lowers not only the consciousness of those
\nwho gossip, but also the general atmosphere of the place. <\/span><\/p>\n

To gossip about what
\nsomebody is doing or not doing is wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n

To listen to such gossip
\nis wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n

To verify if such gossip
\nis true is wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n

To retaliate in words
\nagainst a false gossip is wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n

The whole affair is a
\nvery bad way of wasting one’s time and lowering one’s consciousness.{208}<\/span><\/p>\n

Unless this very nasty
\nhabit is eradicated from the atmosphere, never will the Ashram reach its goal
\nof Divine Life. <\/span><\/p>\n

I wish all would repent
\nlike you and take the resolution of stopping this unhealthy activity. <\/span><\/p>\n
