(While choosing a text to study with a young Indian teacher who
\nwanted to improve her French, the French teacher asked Mother for her opinion o
\n<\/span><\/i>La Peste by Albert
\nCamus.) <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Reading certain things can be good for Europeans who have a rather
\nthick skin, to arouse in them a feeling of true compassion; but here in <\/span>India<\/span> it is not necessary. And it is not good to give an even darker
\npicture of a life that is already dark enough in itself.\u00a0 <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

(Mother suggested <\/span><\/i>Recherche d’une \u00e9glise by
\nJules Romains, and sent her own copy for the French teacher to look at. The
\nteacher was \u201cshocked\u201d by certain chapters of the book and reported her feelings
\nto Mother in rather strong terms. Mother replied:) <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Recherche d’une \u00e9glise<\/span> was the book of my choice. Jules Romains is a great writer and
\nhis French is of the highest order. When I mentioned cuts,<\/span>\u00b9<\/span> it was because certain passages are not<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00b9<\/font><\/span>In a
\npreceding\u00a0 <\/span>latter Mother had written:
\nWith\u00a0 <\/span>certain cuts, some of Jules
\nRomain\u2019s books would also be good, especially <\/font> Recherche d\u2019une \u00e9glise.\u201d<\/font><\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>quite suitable for a young
\nwoman’s mind. But it would have been easy to make these cuts, and the rest is
\nvery good.  <\/span><\/p>\n

I have just been looking at the book, with interest. This time, it
\nis very good. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nteacher outlined a study course on the history of civilisation for one of her
\nstudents, a young Indian teacher, and submitted the project to Mother.) <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Yes, this work would be of interest, but only if it is based on
\nSri Aurobindo’s The Human Cycle <\/span>(it
\nhas been published in the Bulletin<\/span>).
\nFor in this book, not only are all the problems of human evolution posed, they
\nare also solved. Each time that Sri Aurobindo mentions a civilisation or a
\ncountry, the corresponding historical facts could be studied, and this work
\nwould be really interesting.  <\/span><\/p>\n

In one French class for Indian teachers, several students wanted
\nto read the works of contemporary authors, because the language in them is more
\nup-to-date than in classical writings. What does Mother think? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Why step deliberately into the mire? What is to be gained by it?
\nThe knowledge that the Western world is wallowing in the mud? It is hardly necessary.
\nSelected passages, carefully selected, seem to be the solution.  <\/span><\/p>\n

I fully agree. X should have the time to learn French thoroughly
\nand her hours of work and teaching should be organised in such a way that she
\nhas the time to continue her lessons with you, until she feels that they are no
\nlonger necessary. <\/span><\/p>\n
