Should he be left to do as he likes? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Generally speaking, above the age of twelve all children need<br \/>\ndiscipline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span><i>Some teachers believe<br \/>\nthat you are opposed to discipline<\/i><span>.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>For them, discipline is an arbitrary rule that they impose on the<br \/>\nlittle ones, without conforming to it themselves. I am opposed to that kind of<br \/>\ndiscipline.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>So discipline is a rule which the child should impose on himself.<br \/>\nHow can he be led to recognise the need for it? How can he be helped to follow<br \/>\nit? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Example is the most powerful instructor. Never demand from a child<br \/>\nan effort of discipline that you do not make yourself. Calm, equanimity, order,<br \/>\nmethod, absence of useless words, ought to be constantly practised by the<br \/>\nteacher if he wants to instil them into his pupils. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The teacher should always be punctual and come to the class a few<br \/>\nminutes before it begins, always properly dressed. And above all, so that his<br \/>\nstudents should never lie, he must never lie himself; so that his students<br \/>\nshould never lose their tempers, he should never lose his temper with them; and<br \/>\nto have the right to say to them, \u201cRough play often ends in tears\u201d, he should&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 194<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoPlainText\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>never raise his hand<br \/>\nagainst any of them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>These are elementary and preliminary things which ought to be<br \/>\npractised in all schools without exception. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>One can be in psychological control of the children only when one<br \/>\nis in control of one&#8217;s own nature. <\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><br \/>\n<span style='font-family:Times New Roman' lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>16<br \/>\n July 1963<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>First, know thoroughly what you have to teach. They don&#8217;t have the means to express themselves, the words<br \/>\nare not there, but they are very conscious. It is quite enough to<br \/>\nsurround them with things and to let them be. Never interfere unless it is<br \/>\nabsolutely necessary. And let them be.
