\nIN THE ASHRAM AND THE SCHOOL<\/span><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n

(Two or three teachers were having a discussion about the language
\nof instruction in the school. Their discussion was submitted to Mother with the
\nremark:)\u00a0 <\/span>Sri Aurobindo says in his book
\non education that the child should be taught in his mother-tongue. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo did say that, but he also said many other things
\nwhich complete his advice and abolish all possibility of dogmatism. Sri
\nAurobindo himself has often repeated that if one affirms one thing, one should
\nbe able to affirm its opposite; otherwise one cannot understand the Truth. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

(In the same letter, one of the teachers
\nwondered about the future of French in the Ashram.)<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

French will continue to be taught in the Ashram, at least so long
\nas I am here, because Sri Aurobindo, who loved French very much and knew it
\nvery well, considered it to be an essential part of the knowledge of languages.  <\/span><\/p>\n

(In the course of a conversation about French, a disciple pointed
\nout to Mother that now many French people, especially newcomers, speak in
\nEnglish, even to people who know French perfectly well. Mother concentrated for
\na moment and said:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i>\u201cSo much the
\nworse for them.\u201d The disciple then
\nasked whether it would be helpful if she gave a message on this matter. She
\nwrote the following message and suggested that it should be put up in the
\nAshram and in the school, and<\/span><\/span><\/i> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that a copy should be put
\nup in the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d. Photocopies were made for this purpose.) <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo loved French very much. He used to say that it was a
\nclear and precise language, whose use encouraged clarity of mind. From the
\npoint of view of the development of the consciousness, that is precious. In
\nFrench, one can say exactly what one wants to say. <\/span><\/p>\n
