To know oneself means to know the<br \/>\nmotives of one&#8217;s actions and reactions, the why and the how of all that happens<br \/>\nin oneself. To master oneself means to do what one has decided to do, to do<br \/>\nnothing but that, not to listen to or follow impulses, desires or fancies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>To give a moral law to a child is evidently not an ideal thing;<br \/>\nbut it is very difficult to do without it. The child can be taught, as he grows<br \/>\nup, the relativity of all moral and social laws so that he may find in himself<br \/>\na higher and truer law. But here one must proceed with circumspection and<br \/>\ninsist on the difficulty of discovering that true law. The majority of those<br \/>\nwho reject human laws and proclaim their liberty and their decision to \u201clive<br \/>\ntheir own life\u201d do so only in obedience to the most ordinary vital movements<br \/>\nwhich they disguise and try to justify, if not to their own eyes, at least to<br \/>\nthe eyes of others. part of studies consists<br \/>\nin learning about the past, in the hope that it will give you a better<br \/>\nunderstanding of the present.
