At that time, children were not permitted, as a<br \/>\nrule, to live in the Ashram. In the early 1940s, a number of families were<br \/>\nadmitted to the Ashram and instruction was initiated for the children. On <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>2 December<br \/>\n 1943<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>, the Mother<br \/>\nformally opened a school for about twenty children. She herself was one of the<br \/>\nteachers. The number of pupils gradually increased during the next seven years.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>On <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>24 April 1951<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>, the Mother presided over a convention where it was resolved to<br \/>\nestablish an \u201cinternational university centre\u201d. On <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>6 January<br \/>\n 1952<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>, she<br \/>\ninaugurated the <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sri<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:  12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Aurobindo<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:  12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>International<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<span><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>University<\/span><\/i><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> Centre. The name was changed in 1959 to the Sri Aurobindo<br \/>\nInternational Centre of Education. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>At present, the Centre of<br \/>\nEducation has about 150 full or part-time teachers and 500 students, ranging<br \/>\nfrom nursery to advanced levels. The curriculum includes the humanities,<br \/>\nlanguages, fine arts, sciences, engineering, technology and vocational<br \/>\ntraining. Facilities include libraries, laboratories, workshops, and a theatre<br \/>\nand studios for drama, dance, music, painting, e . <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The Centre of Education<br \/>\nseeks to develop every aspect of the individual, rather than to concentrate<br \/>\nexclusively on mental training. It employs what is called the \u201cFree Progress<br \/>\nSystem\u201d, which is, in the Mother&#8217;s words, \u201ca progress guided by the soul and<br \/>\nnot subject to habits, conventions or preconceived ideas.\u201d The student is<br \/>\nencouraged to learn by himself, choose his subjects of study, progress at his<br \/>\nown pace and ultimately to take charge of his own development. The teacher is<br \/>\nmore an advisor and source of information than an instructor. In practice, the<br \/>\nsystem is adapted to the temperament of teacher and student, and some still<br \/>\nprefer the <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 109<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoPlainText\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>traditional methods of education, utilising prescribed courses of<br \/>\nstudy with direct instruction by the teacher. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Sciences and mathematics<br \/>\nare studied in French, other subjects in English.
