During the 1920s and 1930s, the Mother’s educational guidance was
\nlimited to instructing a few individuals in French and offering general counsel
\nin other courses of study. At that time, children were not permitted, as a
\nrule, to live in the Ashram. In the early 1940s, a number of families were
\nadmitted to the Ashram and instruction was initiated for the children. On <\/span><\/i>2 December
\n 1943<\/span><\/i>, the Mother
\nformally opened a school for about twenty children. She herself was one of the
\nteachers. The number of pupils gradually increased during the next seven years.
\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>On <\/span><\/i>24 April 1951<\/span><\/i>, the Mother presided over a convention where it was resolved to
\nestablish an \u201cinternational university centre\u201d. On <\/span><\/i>6 January
\n 1952<\/span><\/i>, she
\ninaugurated the <\/span><\/i>Sri<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>Aurobindo<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>International<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>
\nUniversity<\/span><\/i><\/span> Centre. The name was changed in 1959 to the Sri Aurobindo
\nInternational Centre of Education. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>At present, the Centre of
\nEducation has about 150 full or part-time teachers and 500 students, ranging
\nfrom nursery to advanced levels. The curriculum includes the humanities,
\nlanguages, fine arts, sciences, engineering, technology and vocational
\ntraining. Facilities include libraries, laboratories, workshops, and a theatre
\nand studios for drama, dance, music, painting, e . <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Centre of Education
\nseeks to develop every aspect of the individual, rather than to concentrate
\nexclusively on mental training. It employs what is called the \u201cFree Progress
\nSystem\u201d, which is, in the Mother’s words, \u201ca progress guided by the soul and
\nnot subject to habits, conventions or preconceived ideas.\u201d The student is
\nencouraged to learn by himself, choose his subjects of study, progress at his
\nown pace and ultimately to take charge of his own development. The teacher is
\nmore an advisor and source of information than an instructor. In practice, the
\nsystem is adapted to the temperament of teacher and student, and some still
\nprefer the <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

traditional methods of education, utilising prescribed courses of
\nstudy with direct instruction by the teacher. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Sciences and mathematics
\nare studied in French, other subjects in English. Each student is encouraged to
\nlearn his mother-tongue, and some study additional languages, both Indian and
\nEuropean. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Centre of Education
\ndoes not award degrees or diplomas, since it seeks to awaken in its students a
\njoy of learning and an aspiration for progress that are independent of outer
\nmotives. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
