Why are we here in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

There is an ascending evolution in nature which goes from the
\nstone to the plant, from the plant to the animal, from the animal to man.
\nBecause man is, for the moment, the last rung at the summit of the ascending
\nevolution, he considers himself as the final stage in this ascension and
\nbelieves there can be nothing on earth superior to him. In that he is mistaken.
\nIn his physical nature he is yet almost wholly an animal, a thinking and
\nspeaking animal, but still an animal in his material habits and instincts.
\nUndoubtedly, nature cannot be satisfied with such an imperfect result; she
\nendeavours to bring out a being who will be to man what man is to the animal, a
\nbeing who will remain a man in its external form, and yet whose consciousness
\nwill rise far above the mental and its slavery to ignorance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo came upon earth to teach this truth to men. He told
\nthem that man is only a transitional being living in a mental consciousness,
\nbut with the possibility of acquiring a new consciousness, the
\nTruth-consciousness, and capable of living a life perfectly harmonious, good
\nand beautiful, happy and fully conscious. During the whole of his life upon
\nearth, Sri Aurobindo gave all his time to establish in himself this
\nconsciousness he called supramental, and to help those gathered around him to
\nrealise it. <\/span><\/p>\n

You have the immense privilege of having come quite young to the
\nAshram, that is to say, still plastic and capable of being moulded according to
\nthis new ideal and thus become the representatives of the new race. Here, in
\nthe Ashram, you are in the most favourable conditions with regard to the
\nenvironment, the influence, the teaching and the example, to awaken in you this
\nsuprarenal consciousness and to grow according to its law. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now, all depends on your will and your sincerity. If you<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

have the will no more to belong to ordinary humanity, no more to
\nbe merely evolved animals; if your will is to become men of the new race
\nrealising Sri Aurobindo’s supramental ideal, living a new and higher life upon
\na new earth, you will find here all the necessary help to achieve your purpose;
\nyou will profit fully by your stay in the Ashram and eventually become living
\nexamples for the world. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

What is the real purpose, the aim of our Education Centre? Is it
\nto teach Sri Aurobindo’s works? And these only? And all or some of these? Or is
\nit to prepare students to read Sri Aurobindo’s works and Mother’s? Is it to
\nprepare them for the Ashram life or also for other `outside’ occupation? There
\nare so many opinions floating around, and even those older people whom we
\nexpect to know make so many different statements, that one does not know what
\nto believe and act by. Then on what basis can we work without any real sure
\nknowledge? I pray, Mother, give us your guidance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not a question of preparing to read these works or other
\nworks. It is a question of pulling all those who are capable to do so, out of
\nthe general human routine of thought, feeling and action; it is to give all
\nopportunities to those who are here to cast off from them the slavery to the
\nhuman way of thinking and doing; it is to teach all those who want to listen
\nthat there is another and truer way of living, that Sri Aurobindo has taught us
\nhow to live and become a\u00a0 <\/span>it true being \u2013 <\/span>and that the aim of the
\neducation here is to prepare the children and make them fit for it that life<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

For all the rest, the human ways of thinking and living, the<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>world is vast and there is
\nplace out there for everybody. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is not a number that we want it is a selection; it is not
\nbrilliant students that we want, it is living souls. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It should be known and we should not hesitate to say openly that
\nthe purpose of our school is to discover and encourage those in whom the need
\nfor progress has become conscious enough to orient their life.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

From the worldly standpoint, from the point of view of result
\nachieved certainly things can be done better. But I am speaking of the effort put
\nin, effort in the deepest sense of the word. Work is prayer done with the body.
\nWith that effort in your work the Divine is satisfied; the eye of the
\nConsciousness that has viewed it is indeed pleased. Not that from the human
\nstandpoint one cannot do better. For us, however, this particular endeavour is
\none among many; it is only one movement in our Sadhana. We are engaged in many
\nother things. To bring one particular item of work to something like perfection
\nrequires time and means and resources which are not at our disposal.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

But we do not seek perfection in one thing, our aim is an integral
\nachievement. <\/span><\/p>\n

An outside view may find many things to criticise and criticise
\nmuch, but from the inner view what has been done has been done well. In an
\noutside view, you come with all kinds of mental, intellectual formations and
\nfind there is nothing uncommon in what is done here. But thereby you miss what
\nis behind: the Sadhana. A deeper consciousness would see the march towards a
\nrealisation that surpasses all. The outside view does not see the spiritual
\nlife; it judges by its own smallness. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are people who write wanting to join our University and they
\nask what kind of diploma or degree we prepare for, the career we open out. To
\nthem I say: go elsewhere, please, if you want that; there are many other
\nplaces, very much better than ours, even in India, in that respect. We do not
\nhave their equipment or magnificence. You will get there the kind of success
\nyou look for. We do not compete with them. We move in a different sphere, on a
\ndifferent level. <\/span><\/p>\n

But this does not mean that I ask you to feel superior to others.
\nThe true consciousness is incapable of feeling superior. It is only the small
\nconsciousness that seeks to show its superiority. Even a child is superior to
\nsuch a being: for it is spontaneous in its movements. Rise above all that. Do
\nnot be interested in anything other than your relation with the Divine, what
\nyou wish to do for Him. That is the only thing interesting.1 <\/sup> <\/span><\/p>\n

We are not here to lead an easy and comfortable life. We are here
\nto find the Divine, to become divine, to manifest the Divine. <\/span><\/p>\n

What happens to us is the Divine’s affair, not ours. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Divine knows better than we do what is good for the world\u2019s
\nprogress and for the world\u2019s progress and for our own. <\/span><\/p>\n

You must not confuse a religious teaching with a spiritual one. <\/span><\/p>\n

Religious teaching belongs to the past and halts progress. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nteaching of the future it illumines the consciousness and prepares it for the
\nfuture realisation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Spiritual teaching is above
\nreligions and strives towards a global Truth. <\/span><\/p>\n

It teaches us to enter into direct relations with the Divine. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The aim of education is not to prepare a man to succeed in life
\nand society, but to increase his perfectibility to its utmost. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Do not aim at success. Our aim is perfection. Remember you are on
\nthe threshold of it a new world<\/span>,
\nparticipating in its birth and instrumental in its creation. There is nothing
\nmore important than the transformation. There is no interest more worthwhile. <\/span>

In a general way, education, culture, refinement of the senses are
\nthe means of curing movements of crude instinct and desire and passion. To
\nobliterate them is not curing them; instead they should be cultivated,
\nintellectualised, refined. That is the surest way of curing them. To give them
\ntheir maximum growth in view of the progress and development of consciousness,
\nso that one may attain to a sense of harmony and exactitude of perception is a
\npart of culture and education for the human being.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>
