\nTHE \u201cBIBLIOTH\u00c8QUE CHOISIE<\/font><\/span><\/b>\u201d<\/font><\/span>\u00b9<\/font><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

(A teacher noticed that the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d contained a
\nrather high proportion of books which should not be there if the library is to
\nbe worthy of its name. She spoke of this to Mother in the course of several
\ninterviews. This was the outcome:)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Mother’s advice about the composition of the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que
\nChoisie\u201d.<\/span>\u00b2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Remove all modern novels. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Include only scholarly
\nworks, on philosophy, art, the sciences. <\/span><\/p>\n

The best thing would be to bring the list of books to Mother, a
\nlittle at a time, so that she can see what they contain. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This is an important
\nmatter.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The teacher asked Mother what she meant by \u201cscholarly works\u201d. She
\nreplied:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

All books that aim to teach. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The aim of the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d is to teach the students
\ngood French and the best in French thought. <\/span><\/p>\n

It should include mainly scholarly works, that is, works<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00b2<\/font><\/span>This note
\nwas taken down as Mother was speaking. It was immediately read out to her and
\nshe wrote on it \u201cApproved\u201d and signed it.<\/font><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

which aim to teach: books on philosophy, art, the sciences, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n

There should be very few novels (the students read only too many
\nnovels), and no modern novels, unless they are of particularly good quality. <\/span><\/p>\n

Literature has its place in the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d, so that
\nthe students can learn what literature is. <\/span><\/p>\n

The most important thing to be taken into consideration when
\nselecting books, is the quality of the language and style,1 <\/sup>something
\n\u201csplendid\u201d as in Flaubert. No translations, or very few, and only if they are
\nof famous works one cannot say \u201cmasterpieces\u201d because there are so few of them!2<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\nbad books which are to be withdrawn from the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d, Mother

They should be put in a special place, in a special room called
\n\u201cBad Books\u201d, so that those who want to study what they contain may do so. <\/span><\/p>\n

Great care must be taken when ordering books. <\/span><\/p>\n

The question of the \u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d is an important one. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The aim of the
\n\u201cBiblioth\u00e8que Choisie\u201d is to teach French well. <\/span><\/p>\n

1. The books should be well written.<\/span><\/p>\n

      <\/span>2. Preference should
\nbe given to those that are interesting from the point of view of learning. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. Include novels only if
\nthey are remarkably well written. <\/span><\/p>\n

4. Very few translations only those of famous books. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5. Send all the rest to the Big Library with the note: \u201cNot to be
\nrecommended.\u201d<\/span>\u00b3<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\nsentence was being read out, Mother showed particular approval. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n


\n2<\/font><\/span><\/sup>This note was
\ntaken down after a conversation between Mother and the same teacher. It was
\nread to Mother, who wrote \u201cApproved\u201d and signed it.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
