Sweet Mother, how should one read your books and the books of Sri
\nAurobindo so that they might enter into our consciousness instead of being
\nunderstood only by the mind? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

To read my books is not difficult because they are written in the
\nsimplest language, almost the spoken language. To draw profit from them, it is
\nenough to read with attention and concentration and an attitude of inner
\ngoodwill with the desire to receive and to live what is taught. <\/span><\/p>\n

To read what Sri Aurobindo writes is more difficult because the
\nexpression is highly intellectual and the language is much more literary and
\nphilosophic. The brain needs a preparation to be able truly to understand and
\ngenerally a preparation takes time, unless one is specially gifted with an
\ninnate intuitive faculty. <\/span><\/p>\n

In any case, I advise always to read\u00a0 <\/span>a
\nlittle<\/span> at a time, keeping the mind as tranquil as one can, without
\nmaking an effort to understand, but keeping the head as silent as possible, and
\nletting the\u00a0 <\/span>force contained in what one reads enter deep within<\/span>. This force
\nreceived in the calm and the silence will do its work of light and, if needed,
\nwill create in the brain the necessary cells for the understanding. Thus, when
\none re-reads the same thing some months later, one perceives that the thought
\nexpressed has become much more clear and close, and even sometimes altogether
\nfamiliar.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is preferable to read regularly, a little every day, and at a
\nfixed hour if possible; this facilitates the brain-receptivity. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The true method is to read a little at a time, with concentration,

\nbut turned upwards, in silence, and aspiring for the light. Understanding will
\ncome little by little. <\/span><\/p>\n

And later, in one or two years, you will read the same thing again
\nand then you will know that the first contact had been vague and incomplete,
\nand that true understanding comes later, after having tried to put it into

\nand gives the necessary elements of information to the students. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

(2) Next, he gives to the students,
\nwithout comments, the most significant passage (or passages) from Sri
\nAurobindo, relevant to the subject, and asks them to read and ponder over the
\nsame. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

(3) The students are then requested to
\nexpress orally at the next class or in a short essay what they have understood
\nand the conclusions they have reached.  <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Regarding (1) above: Is it the Mother’s
\nintention that while presenting the subject, the teacher should do so without

Surely the teacher can read to the students passages from Sri
\nAurobindo whenever he finds it useful. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nsilently, in the class or at home; it depends on the time and circumstances.
\nThe important thing is that Sri Aurobindo’s writings should not be chewed and
\npresented to the students as a semi-digested food. The teacher may give all the
\nelements of appreciation but the students should have the direct contact, the
\njoy of illumination. The teacher should be careful not to interpose himself as
\na screen between the mind of the student and the great consciousness of Sri
\nAurobindo. <\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding (3): Is it the Mother’s wish that the students should be
\nasked to express orally or in writing what they have understood in a class at
\nevery next class? If a topic or a chapter takes more than one class to
\ncomplete, could they be asked to express themselves when the topic or chapter
\nis completed? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

This is naturally left to the teacher. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are certain subjects which have been prescribed for study as
\nintroduction to the chief task of studying Sri Aurobindo’s works. Instead of
\nteaching these subjects separately before taking up Sri Aurobindo’s book, can
\nthe teachers teach them simultaneously, explaining the relevant ideas from them
\nwhile presenting the given subject in Sri Aurobindo’s book? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

You may do as you prefer, but as told above, care must always be
\ntaken that Sri Aurobindo comes to the students after they have received the
\nnecessary information and preparation, but with all his freshness and power. <\/span><\/p>\n

You were trying to show the continuity of history, with Sri
\nAurobindo as the outcome, the culmination. It is false entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo does not belong to history; he is outside and beyond
\nhistory. <\/span><\/p>\n

Till the birth of Sri Aurobindo, religions and spiritualities were
\nalways centred on past figures, and they were showing as \u2018the goal\u2019 the
\nnegation of life upon earth. So, you had a choice between two alternatives:
\neither<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 a life in<\/i> this
\nworld with its round of petty pleasures and pains, joys and sufferings,
\nthreatened by hell if you were not behaving properly, or<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 an escape into<\/i>
\nanother world, heaven, nirvana, moksha.\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Between these two there is nothing much to choose, they are
\nequally bad. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo has told us that this was a fundamental mistake
\nwhich accounts for the weakness and degradation of <\/span>India<\/span>. Buddhism, Jainism, Illusionism were sufficient to sap all energy
\nout of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

True, <\/span>India<\/span> is the only place in the world which is still aware that
\nsomething else than Matter exists. The other countries have quite forgotten it:

\nand deliver to the world. But at present she is splashing and floundering in
\nthe muddle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo has shown that the truth does not lie in running
\naway from earthly life but in remaining in<\/i> it, to transform<\/i> it, divinise<\/span>
\nit<\/i>, so that the Divine can manifest <\/span>here<\/span>, in this <\/span>PHYSICAL world<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

You should say all this at the first sitting. You should be square
\nand frank\u2026 like that! (With her
\nhands Mother makes a big square sign on the table.<\/i>)<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Then, when this is told, strongly, squarely, and there is no doubt
\nabout it \u2013 and then only \u2013 you can go on and amuse them with the history of
\nreligions and religious or spiritual leaders. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then \u2013 and then only \u2013 you will be able to show the seed of
\nweakness and falsehood that they have harboured and proclaimed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then \u2013 and then only \u2013 you will be able to discern, from time to
\ntime, from place to place, an \u2018intuition\u2019 that something else is possible; in
\nthe Vedas, for instance (the injunction to descend deep into the cave of the
\nPanis); in the Tantras also\u2026 a little light is burning. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nprimarily intended to impart and imbibe Sri Aurobindo’s teachings, so how can
\ntheir study be kept optional? In fact, it would be very strange to suppose that
\nany student of our Centre would not be interested in studying Sri Aurobindo’s
\nworks. And if he is not, how can he be expected to be a student of our Centre? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Yes, to those who want to learn in school but not for those who
\nwish to study alone.  <\/span><\/p>\n

\nbe allotted to this subject. As to the language in which these classes should
\nbe taken we pray to the Mother to decide.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
