Then the
\nvoice of the Unknown Man is heard,<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

calm,
\ngentle, clear, full of a serene authority<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTHE\u00a0 <\/span>UNKNOWN\u00a0
\n<\/span>MAN<\/span><\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

What you want to know, I
\ncan tell you. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>All of you have had a
\nsimilar experience, although your activities are so different in their nature
\nand scope. All six of you have come to a similar conclusion in spite of the
\nsuccess that has crowned your efforts. For you have been living in the surface
\nconsciousness, seeing only the appearance of things and unaware of the true
\nreality of the universe. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>You represent the ‘elite of
\nmankind, each one of you has achieved in his own sphere the utmost of what man
\nis capable of; you are therefore at the summit of the human race. But from this
\nsummit you look down into an abyss and you can go no further. None of you are
\nsatisfied but at the same time none of you know what to do. None of you know
\nthe solution to the twofold problem presented by life and your own goodwill. I
\nsay a twofold problem, for in fact it has two aspects, one individual and the
\nother collective: how can one fully realise one’s own good and the good of
\nothers? None of you have found the solution, for this riddle of life cannot be
\nsolved by mental man, however superior he may be. For that, one must be born
\ninto a new and higher consciousness, the Truth-Consciousness. For behind these
\nfleeting appearances there is an eternal reality, behind this unconscious and
\nwarring multitude there is a single, serene Consciousness, behind these endless
\nand innumerable falsehoods there is a pure, radiant Truth, behind this obscure
\nand obdurate ignorance there is a sovereign knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>And this Reality is here,
\nvery near, at the centre of your being as it is at the centre of the universe.
\nYou have only to find it and live it and you will be able to solve all your
\nproblems, overcome all your difficulties. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This, you may say, is what
\nthe religions preach: most of<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n

them have spoken of this
\nReality, calling it God, but they have supplied no satisfactory solution to
\nyour problem, no convincing answer to your questions, and they have totally
\nfailed in their attempt to provide a remedy to the ills of suffering humanity. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Some of these religions
\nwere based on prophetic revelation, others on a philosophical and spiritual
\nideal, but very soon the revelation changed to rituals and the philosophical
\nideal to dogmas, and so the truth they contained vanished. Moreover, and most
\nimportant, all religions, almost without exception, offer man an almost
\nidentical other-worldly solution, based on death, not on life. Their solution
\namounts to this: bear all your miseries without complaining, for this world is
\nirremediably evil, and you shall be rewarded for your meekness after death; or
\nelse: renounce all attachment to life and you shall escape forever from the cruel
\nnecessity of living. This certainly cannot provide any remedy to the sufferings
\nof humanity on earth nor to the condition of the world in general. On the
\ncontrary, if we want to find a true solution to the confusion, chaos and misery
\nof the world, we have to find it in the world itself. And this is in fact where
\nit is to be found. It exists potentially, we have only to discover it; it is
\nneither mystic nor imaginary; it is altogether concrete and disclosed to us by
\nNature herself, if we know how to observe her. For the movement of Nature is an
\nascending one; from one form, one species, she brings forth a new one capable
\nof manifesting something more of the universal consciousness. All goes to show
\nthat man is not the last step in terrestrial evolution. The human species will
\nnecessarily be succeeded by a new one which will be to man what man is to the
\nanimal; the present human consciousness will be replaced by a new
\nconsciousness, no longer mental but supramental. And this consciousness will
\ngive birth to a higher race, superhuman and divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The time has come for this
\npossibility, promised and anticipated for so long, to become a living reality
\nupon earth, and that is why you are all unsatisfied and feel that you have been <\/span>
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n

unable to obtain what you wanted from life. Nothing but a radical
\nchange of consciousness can deliver the world from its present obscurity.
\nIndeed, this transformation of the consciousness, this manifestation of a
\nhigher and truer consciousness, is not only possible but certain; it is the
\nvery aim of our existence, the purpose of life upon earth. First the
\nconsciousness must be transformed, then life, then forms; it is in this order
\nthat the new creation will unfold. All Nature’s activity is in fact a
\nprogressive return towards the Supreme Reality which is both the origin and the
\ngoal of the universe, in its totality as well as in its smallest element. We
\nmust become concretely what we are essentially; we must live integrally the
\ntruth, the beauty, the power and the perfection that are hidden in the depths
\nof our being, and then all life will become the expression of the sublime,
\neternal, divine Joy. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a
\nsilence as the six men exchange glances, showing their approval. Then: <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\nT<\/font><\/span>HE<\/font><\/span> W<\/font><\/span>RITER<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Your words have a compelling
\nforce, a contagious power. Yes, we feel that a new door has opened before us, a
\nnew hope is born in our hearts. But it will take time to realise, a long time
\nperhaps. And now death awaits us, the end is near. Alas, it is too late. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\nT<\/font><\/span>HE<\/font><\/span> U<\/font><\/span>NKNOWN<\/font><\/span> M<\/font><\/span>AN<\/font><\/span> <\/span><\/font> <\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>No, it is not too late, it
\nis never too late. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Let us unite our wills in a
\ngreat aspiration; let us pray for an intervention of the Grace. A miracle can
\nalways happen. Faith has a sovereign power. And if indeed we are to take part
\nin the great work to be done, then an intervention will come and prolong our
\nlives. Let us pray with the humility of the wise and the candid faith of a
\nchild; let us invoke with sincerity this new Consciousness, this new Force,
\nTruth and Beauty which must <\/span>
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

manifest, so that the earth may be transformed and the supramental
\nlife realised in the material world. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nconcentrate in silence. The Unknown Man continues: <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cO Supreme Reality, grant that we may live integrally the
\nmarvellous secret that is now revealed to us.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

They all
\nrepeat the prayer softly and remain in silent concentration. Suddenly the
\nArtist cries out: <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Look! Look! <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

A ship
\nappears, like a dot on the horizon, and slowly comes closer. Exclamations. The
\nUnknown Man says: <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Our prayer is heard. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

When the
\nship becomes clearly visible, the Athlete jumps up onto the gunwale waving a
\nwhite handkerchief which he pulls from his pocket. The ship comes nearer. The
\nScientist exclaims: <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

They have seen us. They are coming! <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

And the
\nUnknown Man says slowly: <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Here is salvation, here is new life! <\/span><\/p>\n
