\nTo a Frenchwoman who came to live at the
\nSri Aurobindo Ashram in 1937, at the age of sixty-six. <\/font><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing is inevitable. At every moment an
\nintervention may come from a higher plane into the material one and alter the
\ncourse of circumstances. But in this particular case there is a conflict
\nbetween a very powerful mental construction founded on medical opinion and your
\nfaith in the divine Grace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The
\npower of this medical suggestion lies in the fact that it insinuates itself
\ninto the subconscious and acts on the body from there, undetected even by the
\nconscious mind unless it is in the habit of scouring the subconscious with the
\nvigilance of a detective. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>So
\nthere we are \u2014 I cannot promise you that your faith in the Grace will be
\nintense and unshakable enough to overcome the harmful effect of these medical
\nsuggestions; and I feel that I have no right to tell you, \u201cIt is nothing,\u201d when
\neverything in your material consciousness is crying out, \u201cDanger!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\npreparation for receiving the help we can give, and you can be assured of

Sudden conversions are usually neither
\nintegral nor lasting; they are flashes of lightning which most often dissolve
\ninto smoke. Slow and steady effort and persistent striving for progress are

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And
\nrecalling what happened during your sleep is certainly not indispensable to the
\ndiscovery of your soul. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nagrees with me that it is difficult to make plans so far in advance, because
\ncircumstances are so unpredictable. One thing is settled, however: Sri

disciple does not necessarily imply that
\none lives in the Ashram. In fact, there are more disciples living outside the
\nAshram than in it. Several conditions are needed to live in the Ashram, one of
\nwhich is that one\u2019s health should be good enough to allow one to conform to the
\nAshram discipline which does not provide any special arrangements for food,
\nservices and so on. Those arrangements can be made, for a limited period, for visitors;
\nbut for various reasons it is impossible to make them permanent. So when you
\nare ready to return, let us know three or four months in advance so that we can
\nsee whether any practical arrangement can be made. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>As
\nfor the readings, I think it would be better to spare yourself this strain for
\nthe time being. I think that the few private lessons you are giving are enough.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I
\nam glad to know that you have recovered, and hope that your health will get
\nbetter and better. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am sorry that you have been feeling sad
\nthese last few days. You should not have. The light should always bring with it
\nthe joy of new progress. Now I think that everything will be all right. <\/span><\/p>\n

Do not worry. You have not done anything
\nwrong, either consciously or unconsciously. I was referring to a set of inner
\nand outer circumstances, a set of circumstances which is the inevitable outcome
\nof the preceding set, and so on. Only yogic power, the power of the divine
\nConsciousness, can break this chain of consequences. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nmust leave with your heart full of peace and your mind full of hope. You must

\nto say, our help, our force, our protection and our blessings are always with
\nyou; you must immerse yourself in them as in a soothing, healing bath. Let me

It is difficult for me to answer your
\nquestion since I have no personal experience of utropine and its effects. But
\nas a general rule I feel that when one goes to a doctor for treatment, one
\nshould do what he says. It is in cases of nephritis<\/i>
\nthat utropine<\/span> is supposed to be inadvisable. You
\ncould ask the doctor for an assurance that you are not suffering from nephritis
\n\u2014 which seems very unlikely. <\/span><\/p>\n

These spontaneous reflex actions reveal the
\nsubconscious. By tracking down these spontaneous impulses one can gradually
\nclear a path into the virgin forest of the subconscient and bring the Light

\nnot worry, and above all do not feel sad! On the 12th the dose <\/i>was probably a little too strong and, as a result, a little
\ndifficult to digest. If you can simply remain quiet, very quiet<\/i>, everything will settle down. Then the Light will
\nreappear, brighter and more beautiful than ever. <\/span><\/p>\n
