A Witness of creation, if there had been one conscious but<br \/>\nuninstructed, would only have seen appearing out of a vast abyss of an apparent<br \/>\nnon-existence an Energy busy with the creation of Matter, a material world and<br \/>\nmaterial objects, organising the infinity of the Inconscient into the scheme of<br \/>\na boundless universe or a system of countless universes that stretched around<br \/>\nhim into Space without any certain end or limit, a tireless creation of nebulae<br \/>\nand star-clusters and suns and planets, existing only for itself, without a<br \/>\nsense in it, empty of cause or purpose. It might have seemed to him a<br \/>\nstupendous machinery without a use, a mighty meaningless movement, an aeonic<br \/>\nspectacle without a witness, a cosmic edifice without an inhabitant; for he<br \/>\nwould have seen no sign of an indwelling Spirit, no being for whose delight it<br \/>\nwas made. A creation of this kind could only be the outcome of an inconscient<br \/>\nEnergy or an illusion-cinema, a shadow-play or puppet-play of forms reflected<br \/>\non a superconscient indifferent Absolute. He would have seen no evidence of a<br \/>\nsoul and no hint of Mind or Life in this immeasurable and interminable display<br \/>\nof Matter. It would not have seemed to him possible or imaginable that there<br \/>\ncould at all be in this desert universe for ever inanimate and<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 320<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:3.0pt;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>insensible<br \/>\nan outbreak of teeming life, a first vibration of something occult and<br \/>\nincalculable, alive and conscious, a secret spiritual entity feeling its way<br \/>\ntowards the surface.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">The Life Divine,<\/font><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\"> pp. 848-49<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>I did not<br \/>\nunderstand this sentence, Sweet Mother: \u201cIn the earliest stages of evolutionary<br \/>\nNature we are met by the dumb secrecy of her inconscience.\u201d What is this<br \/>\nsecrecy, Sweet Mother? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The intention of Nature?\u2026It is what Sri Aurobindo has said from<br \/>\nthe beginning, that, hidden in the depths, at the core of matter, there is the<br \/>\nDivine Presence and that the whole terrestrial evolution is made to prepare the<br \/>\nreturn of the creation to its origin, to this Divine Presence which is at the<br \/>\ncentre of everything \u2013 that is the intention of Nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The universe is an objectivisation of the Supreme, as if He had<br \/>\nobjectivised himself outside of himself in order to see himself, to live<br \/>\nhimself, to know himself, and so that there might be an existence and a<br \/>\nconsciousness capable of recognising him as their origin and uniting<br \/>\nconsciously with him to manifest him in the becoming. There is no other reason<br \/>\nfor the universe. The earth is a kind of symbolic crystallisation of universal<br \/>\nlife, a reduction, a concentration, so that the work of evolution may be easier<br \/>\nto do and follow. And if we see the history of the earth, we can understand why<br \/>\nthe universe has been created. It is the Supreme growing aware of himself in an<br \/>\neternal Becoming; and the goal is the union of the created with the Creator, a<br \/>\nunion that is conscious, willing and free, in the Manifestation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>That is the secret of<br \/>\nNature. Nature is the executive Force, it is she who does the work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And she takes up this<br \/>\ncreation, which appears to be totally inconscient but which contains the<br \/>\nSupreme Consciousness and sole Reality and she works so that all this can develop,<br \/>\nbecome<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 321<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>self-aware and realise itself fully. But she does not show it from<br \/>\nthe very beginning. It develops gradually, and that is why at the start it is a<br \/>\nsecret which will be unveiled as it nears the end. And man has reached a point<br \/>\nin the evolution high enough for this secret to be unveiled and for what was<br \/>\ndone in an apparent inconscience to be done consciously, willingly, and<br \/>\ntherefore much more rapidly and in the joy of realisation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In man one can already see that the spiritual reality is being<br \/>\ndeveloped and that it is going to express itself totally and freely. Formerly,<br \/>\nin the animal and the plant, it was\u2026it was necessary to be very clear-sighted<br \/>\nto see it, but man is himself conscious of this spiritual reality, at least in<br \/>\nthe higher part of his human existence. Man is beginning to know what the<br \/>\nSupreme Origin wants of him and is collaborating in carrying it out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Nature wants the<br \/>\ncreation to become conscious of being the Creator himself in an<br \/>\nobjectivisation, that is to say, there is no difference between the Creator and<br \/>\nthe Creation, and the goal is a conscious and realised union. That is the<br \/>\nsecret of Nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Mother, here<br \/>\nSri Aurobindo writes: \u201cthe dumb secrecy of her inconscience\u201d. Why her<br \/>\n\u201cinconscience\u201d? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Whose inconscience? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Nature\u2019s. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>No, Nature is not unconscious, but she has an appearance of<br \/>\nunconsciousness. It began with the inconscience, but in the depths of the<br \/>\ninconscience there was consciousness, and this consciousness is gradually<br \/>\ndeveloping.\u00b9 For instance, mineral nature, stones, earth, metals, water, air,<br \/>\nall this seems to be quite unconscious, although if one observes closely\u2026And<br \/>\nnow science is<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">\u00b9 When this talk as first published,<br \/>\nMother made the following correction: \u201cIt is not the consciousness which<br \/>\ndevelops, it is the manifestation of consciousness which develops, its<br \/>\nexpression: it expresses itself more and more.\u201d <\/font><\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 322<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>discovering that this is only an appearance, that all this is only<br \/>\nconcentrated energy, and of course it is a conscious force which has produced<br \/>\nall this. But apparently, when we see a rock, we don\u2019t think it is conscious,<br \/>\nit does not give the impression of being conscious, it seems to be altogether<br \/>\nunconscious. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is the appearance that is inconscient. It becomes more and more<br \/>\nconscious. Even in the mineral kingdom there are phenomena which reveal a<br \/>\nhidden consciousness, like certain crystals, for instance. If you see with what<br \/>\nprecision, what exactitude and harmony they are formed, if you are in the least<br \/>\nopen, you are bound to feel that behind there\u2019s a consciousness at work, that<br \/>\nthis cannot be the result of unconscious chance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Have you seen<br \/>\nrock-crystals?\u2026You have never seen a rock-crystal? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Yes. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is pretty, isn\u2019t it? It is something very artistic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And the movements of<br \/>\nthe sea, the movements of the air, of the wind, one can\u2019t help feeling that<br \/>\nbehind there is a consciousness or even many consciousnesses at work. In fact,<br \/>\nit is like that. Perhaps it is the word<br \/>\nthat misleads us! Perhaps it is because we call it \u201csupramental\u201d that we expect<br \/>\nto reach it through a higher intellectual mental activity? But the fact is very<br \/>\ndifferent. With this very high, very pure, very noble intellectual activity,<br \/>\none seems to move towards a kind of cold, powerless abstraction, a frozen, an<br \/>\nicy light which is surely very remote from life and still further away from the<br \/>\nexperience of the supramental reality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In this new substance<br \/>\nwhich is spreading and acting in the world, there is a warmth, a power, a joy<br \/>\nso intense that all intellectual activity seems cold and dry beside it. And<br \/>\nthat is why the less one talks about these things the better it is. And in fact<br \/>\nit is not an \u201cattempt\u201d, for it succeeds very well in doing it! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It would seem that in the ordinary psychological constitution of<br \/>\nman, the almost constant function of the mind is to give an acceptable<br \/>\nexplanation of what goes on in the \u201cdesire-being\u201d, the vital, the most material<br \/>\nparts of the mind and the subtlest parts of the body. There is a kind of<br \/>\ngeneral complicity in all the parts of the being to give an explanation and<br \/>\neven a comfortable justification for everything we do, in order to avoid as far<br \/>\nas possible the painful impressions left by the mistakes we commit and<br \/>\nundesirable movements. For instance, unless one has undergone or taken up a<br \/>\nspecial training, whatever one does, the mind gives itself a favourable enough<br \/>\nexplanation of it, so that one is not troubled. Only under the pressure of<br \/>\nouter reactions or circumstances or movements coming from other people, does<br \/>\none gradually consent to look less favourably at what one is and does, and<br \/>\nbegins to ask oneself whether things could not be better than they are. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Spontaneously, the<br \/>\nfirst movement is what is known as self-defense. One puts oneself on one\u2019s<br \/>\nguard and quite spontaneously one wants a justification\u2026for the smallest<br \/>\nthings, absolutely insignificant things \u2013 is a normal attitude in life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And explanations \u2013 one<br \/>\ngives them to oneself; it is only under the pressure of circumstances that one<br \/>\nbegins to give them to others or to another, but first one makes oneself very<br \/>\ncomfortable; first thing: \u201cIt was like that, for it had to be like that, and it<br \/>\nhappened because of this, and&#8230;\u201d, and it is always the fault of circumstances<br \/>\nor other people. And it truly requires an effort \u2013 unless, as I say, one has<br \/>\nundergone a discipline, has&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 327<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>acquired the habit of doing it automatically requires an effort to<br \/>\nbegin to understand that perhaps things are not like this, that perhaps one has<br \/>\nnot done exactly what one ought to have done or reacted as one should. And even<br \/>\nwhen one begins to see it, a much greater effort is needed to recognise<br \/>\nit\u2026officially. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>When one begins to see that one has made a mistake, the first<br \/>\nmovement of the mind is to push it into the background and to put a cloak in<br \/>\nfront of it, the cloak of a very fine little explanation, and as long as one is<br \/>\nnot obliged to show it, one hides it. And this is what I call \u201clack of mental<br \/>\nhonesty\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>First, one deceives<br \/>\noneself by habit, but even when one begins not to deceive oneself,<br \/>\ninstinctively there is a movement of trying, trying to deceive oneself in order<br \/>\nto feel comfortable. And so a still greater step is necessary once one has<br \/>\nunderstood that one was deceiving oneself, to confess frankly, \u201cYes, I was<br \/>\ndeceiving myself.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>All these things are<br \/>\nso habitual, so automatic, as it were, that you are not even aware of them; but<br \/>\nwhen you begin to want to establish some discipline over your being, you make<br \/>\ndiscoveries which are really tremendously interesting. When you have discovered<br \/>\nthis, you become aware that you are living constantly in a\u2026the best word is<br \/>\n\u201cself-deception\u201d, a state of wilful deceit; that is, you deceive yourself<br \/>\nspontaneously. It is not that you need to reflect: spontaneously you put a<br \/>\npretty cloak over what you have done so that it doesn\u2019t show its true<br \/>\ncolours\u2026and all this for things which are so insignificant, which have so<br \/>\nlittle importance! It would be understandable, wouldn\u2019t it, if recognising your<br \/>\nmistake had serious consequences for your very existence \u2013 the instinct of<br \/>\nself-preservation would make you do it as a protection \u2013 but that is not the<br \/>\nquestion, it concerns things which are absolutely unimportant, of no<br \/>\nconsequence at all except that of having to tell yourself, \u201cI have made a<br \/>\nmistake.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This means that an<br \/>\neffort is needed in order to be mentally<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 328<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>sincere. There must be an effort, there must be a discipline. Of<br \/>\ncourse, I am not speaking of those who tell lies in order not to be caught, for<br \/>\neverybody knows that this should not be done. Besides, the most stupid lies are<br \/>\nthe most useless, for they are so flagrant that they can\u2019t deceive anyone. Such<br \/>\nexamples occur constantly; you catch someone doing something wrong and tell<br \/>\nhim, \u201cThat\u2019s how it is\u201d; he gives a silly explanation which nobody can<br \/>\nunderstand, nobody can accept; it is silly but he gives it in the hope of<br \/>\nshielding himself. It is spontaneous, you see, but he knows this is not done.<br \/>\nBut the other kind of deception is much more spontaneous and it is so habitual<br \/>\nthat one is not aware of it. So, when we speak of mental honesty, we speak of<br \/>\nsomething which is acquired by a very constant and sustained effort. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>You catch yourself,<br \/>\ndon\u2019t you, you suddenly catch yourself in the act of giving yourself somewhere<br \/>\nin your head or here (<i>Mother indicates<br \/>\nthe heart<\/i>), here it is more serious\u2026giving a very favourable little<br \/>\nexplanation. And only when you can get a grip on yourself, there, hold fast and<br \/>\nlook at yourself clearly in the face and say, \u201cDo you think it is like that?\u201d,<br \/>\nthen, if you are very courageous and put a very strong pressure, in the end you<br \/>\ntell yourself, \u201cYes, I know very well that it is not like that!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It sometimes takes<br \/>\nyears. Time must pass, one must have changed much within oneself, one\u2019s vision<br \/>\nof things must have become different, one must be in a different condition, in<br \/>\na different relation with circumstances, in order to see clearly, completely,<br \/>\nhow far one was deceiving oneself \u2013 and at that moment one was convinced that<br \/>\none was sincere.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>(<i>Silence<\/i>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It is probable that<br \/>\nperfect sincerity can only come when one rises above this sphere of falsehood<br \/>\nthat is life as we know it on earth, mental life, even the higher mental life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 329<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>When one springs up into the higher sphere, into the world of<br \/>\nTruth, one will be able to see things as they truly are, and seeing them as<br \/>\nthey are, one will be able to live them in their truth. Then all falsehoods<br \/>\nwill naturally crumble. But this is a superficial view of things<br \/>\ndue to the thought\u2019s concentrating on the appearance and process and not<br \/>\nlooking at what lies behind the process. One might as well on the same lines<br \/>\nhave concluded that electricity is only a product or operation of water and<br \/>\ncloud matter, because it is in such a field that lightning emerges; but a<br \/>\ndeeper inquiry has shown that both cloud and water have, on the contrary, the<br \/>\nenergy of electricity as their foundation, their constituent power or<br \/>\nenergy-substance: that which seems to be a result is, \u2013 in its reality, though<br \/>\nnot in its form, \u2013 the origin; the effect is in the essence pre-existent to the<br \/>\napparent cause, the principle of the emergent activity precedent to its present<br \/>\nfield of action. So it is throughout evolutionary Nature; Matter could not have<br \/>\nbecome animate if the principle of Life had not been there constituting Matter<br \/>\nand emerging as a phenomenon of Life-in-Matter; Life-in-Matter could not have<br \/>\nbegun to feel, perceive, think, reason, if the principle of Mind had not been<br \/>\nthere behind life and substance, constituting it as its field of operation and<br \/>\nemergent in the phenomenon of a thinking life and body: so too spirituality<br \/>\nemerging in Mind is the sign of a power which itself has founded and<br \/>\nconstituted life, mind and body and is now emerging as a spiritual being in a<br \/>\nliving and thinking body. How far this emergence will go, whether it will<br \/>\nbecome dominant<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 331<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>and<br \/>\ntransform its instrument, is a subsequent question; but what is necessary first<br \/>\nto posit is the existence of Spirit as something else than Mind and greater<br \/>\nthan Mind, spirituality as something other than mentality and the spiritual<br \/>\nbeing therefore as something distinct from the mental being: Spirit is a final<br \/>\nevolutionary emergence because it is the original involutionary element and<br \/>\nfactor. Evolution is an inverse action of the involution: what is an ultimate<br \/>\nand last derivation in the involution is the first to appear in the evolution;<br \/>\nwhat was original and primal in the involution is in the evolution the last and<br \/>\nsupreme emergence.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">The Life Divine,<\/font><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\"> pp. 852-53<\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Today I have been asked to speak to you about the Avatar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The first thing I have to say is that Sri Aurobindo has written on<br \/>\nthis subject and the person who has asked me the question would do well to<br \/>\nbegin by reading what Sri Aurobindo has written. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I shall not speak to<br \/>\nyou about that, for it is better to read it for yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>But I could speak to<br \/>\nyou of a very old tradition, more ancient than the two known lines of spiritual<br \/>\nand occult tradition, that is, the Vedic and Chaldean lines; a tradition which<br \/>\nseems to have been at the origin of these two known traditions, in which it is<br \/>\nsaid that when, as a result of the action of the adverse forces \u2013 known in the<br \/>\nHindu tradition as the Asuras \u2013 the world, instead of developing according to<br \/>\nits law of Light and inherent consciousness, was plunged into the darkness,<br \/>\ninconscience and ignorance that we know, the Creative Power implored the<br \/>\nSupreme Origin, asking him for a special intervention which could save this<br \/>\ncorrupted universe; and in reply to this prayer there was emanated from the<br \/>\nSupreme Origin a special Entity, of Love and Consciousness, who cast himself<br \/>\ndirectly into the most inconscient matter to begin there the work of awakening <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 332<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>it to the original Consciousness and Love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In the old narratives this Being is described as stretched out in<br \/>\na deep sleep at the bottom of a very dark cave, and in his sleep there emanated<br \/>\nfrom him prismatic rays of light which gradually spread into the Inconscience<br \/>\nand embedded themselves in all the elements of this Inconscience to begin there<br \/>\nthe work of Awakening. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If one consciously<br \/>\nenters into this Inconscient, one can still see there this same marvellous<br \/>\nBeing, still in deep sleep, continuing his work of emanation, spreading his<br \/>\nLight; and he will continue to do it until the Inconscience is no longer<br \/>\ninconscient, until Darkness disappears from the world \u2013 and the whole creation<br \/>\nawakens to the Supramental Consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And it is remarkable<br \/>\nthat this wonderful Being strangely resembles the one whom I saw in vision one<br \/>\nday, the Being who is at the other extremity, at the confines of form and the<br \/>\nFormless. But that one was in a golden, crimson glory, whereas in his sleep the<br \/>\nother Being was of a shining diamond whiteness emanating opalescent rays. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, this is the<br \/>\norigin of all Avatars. He is, so to say, the first universal Avatar who,<br \/>\ngradually, has assumed more and more conscious bodies and finally manifested in<br \/>\na kind of recognised line of Beings who have descended directly from the<br \/>\nSupreme to perfect this work of preparing the universe so that, through a<br \/>\ncontinuous progression, it may become ready to receive and manifest the<br \/>\nsupramental Light in its entirety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In every country,<br \/>\nevery tradition, the event has been presented in a special way, with different<br \/>\nlimitations, different details, particular features, but truly speaking, the<br \/>\norigin of all these stories is the same, and that is what we could call a<br \/>\ndirect, conscious intervention of the Supreme in the darkest matter, without<br \/>\ngoing through all the intermediaries, in order to awaken this Matter to the<br \/>\nreceptivity of the Divine Forces. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The intervals<br \/>\nseparating these various incarnations seem to become shorter and shorter, as<br \/>\nif, to the extent that Matter<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 333<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>became more and more ready, the action could accelerate and become<br \/>\nmore and more rapid in its movement, more and more conscious too, more and more<br \/>\neffective and decisive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>And it will go on multiplying and intensifying until the entire<br \/>\nuniverse becomes the total Avatar of the Supreme.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page \u2013 334<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin: 0\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;color: #0000FF;font-weight: 700\"><br \/>\n  <font size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/index.php\/02-works-of-the-mother\/01-cwmce\/09-questions-and-answers-volume-09\/00-Contents-Vol-09-questions-and-answers-volume-09\" style=\"text-decoration: none\">Home<\/a><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>7 May 1958 &nbsp;
