\nearliest stages of evolutionary Nature we are met by the dumb secrecy of her
\ninconscience; there is no revelation of any significance or purpose in her
\nworks, no hint of any other principles of being than that first formulation which
\nis her immediate preoccupation and seems to be for ever her only business: for
\nin her primal works Matter alone appears, the sole dumb and stark cosmic
\nreality. A Witness of creation, if there had been one conscious but
\nuninstructed, would only have seen appearing out of a vast abyss of an apparent
\nnon-existence an Energy busy with the creation of Matter, a material world and
\nmaterial objects, organising the infinity of the Inconscient into the scheme of
\na boundless universe or a system of countless universes that stretched around
\nhim into Space without any certain end or limit, a tireless creation of nebulae
\nand star-clusters and suns and planets, existing only for itself, without a
\nsense in it, empty of cause or purpose. It might have seemed to him a
\nstupendous machinery without a use, a mighty meaningless movement, an aeonic
\nspectacle without a witness, a cosmic edifice without an inhabitant; for he
\nwould have seen no sign of an indwelling Spirit, no being for whose delight it
\nwas made. A creation of this kind could only be the outcome of an inconscient
\nEnergy or an illusion-cinema, a shadow-play or puppet-play of forms reflected
\non a superconscient indifferent Absolute. He would have seen no evidence of a
\nsoul and no hint of Mind or Life in this immeasurable and interminable display
\nof Matter. It would not have seemed to him possible or imaginable that there
\ncould at all be in this desert universe for ever inanimate and<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\nsecrecy, Sweet Mother? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The intention of Nature?\u2026It is what Sri Aurobindo has said from
\nthe beginning, that, hidden in the depths, at the core of matter, there is the
\nDivine Presence and that the whole terrestrial evolution is made to prepare the
\nreturn of the creation to its origin, to this Divine Presence which is at the
\ncentre of everything \u2013 that is the intention of Nature. <\/span><\/p>\n

The universe is an objectivisation of the Supreme, as if He had
\nobjectivised himself outside of himself in order to see himself, to live
\nhimself, to know himself, and so that there might be an existence and a
\nconsciousness capable of recognising him as their origin and uniting
\nconsciously with him to manifest him in the becoming. There is no other reason
\nfor the universe. The earth is a kind of symbolic crystallisation of universal
\nlife, a reduction, a concentration, so that the work of evolution may be easier
\nto do and follow. And if we see the history of the earth, we can understand why
\nthe universe has been created. It is the Supreme growing aware of himself in an
\neternal Becoming; and the goal is the union of the created with the Creator, a
\nunion that is conscious, willing and free, in the Manifestation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>That is the secret of
\nNature. Nature is the executive Force, it is she who does the work. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And she takes up this
\ncreation, which appears to be totally inconscient but which contains the
\nSupreme Consciousness and sole Reality and she works so that all this can develop,
\nbecome

self-aware and realise itself fully. But she does not show it from
\nthe very beginning. It develops gradually, and that is why at the start it is a
\nsecret which will be unveiled as it nears the end. And man has reached a point
\nin the evolution high enough for this secret to be unveiled and for what was
\ndone in an apparent inconscience to be done consciously, willingly, and
\ntherefore much more rapidly and in the joy of realisation. <\/span><\/p>\n

In man one can already see that the spiritual reality is being
\ndeveloped and that it is going to express itself totally and freely. Formerly,
\nin the animal and the plant, it was\u2026it was necessary to be very clear-sighted
\nto see it, but man is himself conscious of this spiritual reality, at least in
\nthe higher part of his human existence. Man is beginning to know what the
\nSupreme Origin wants of him and is collaborating in carrying it out. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Nature wants the
\ncreation to become conscious of being the Creator himself in an
\nobjectivisation, that is to say, there is no difference between the Creator and
\nthe Creation, and the goal is a conscious and realised union. That is the
\nsecret of Nature. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nSri Aurobindo writes: \u201cthe dumb secrecy of her inconscience\u201d. Why her
\n\u201cinconscience\u201d? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Whose inconscience? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Nature\u2019s. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

No, Nature is not unconscious, but she has an appearance of
\nunconsciousness. It began with the inconscience, but in the depths of the
\ninconscience there was consciousness, and this consciousness is gradually
\ndeveloping.\u00b9 For instance, mineral nature, stones, earth, metals, water, air,
\nall this seems to be quite unconscious, although if one observes closely\u2026And
\nnow science is<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b9 When this talk as first published,
\nMother made the following correction: \u201cIt is not the consciousness which
\ndevelops, it is the manifestation of consciousness which develops, its

discovering that this is only an appearance, that all this is only
\nconcentrated energy, and of course it is a conscious force which has produced
\nall this. But apparently, when we see a rock, we don\u2019t think it is conscious,
\nit does not give the impression of being conscious, it seems to be altogether
\nunconscious. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is the appearance that is inconscient. It becomes more and more
\nconscious. Even in the mineral kingdom there are phenomena which reveal a
\nhidden consciousness, like certain crystals, for instance. If you see with what
\nprecision, what exactitude and harmony they are formed, if you are in the least
\nopen, you are bound to feel that behind there\u2019s a consciousness at work, that
\nthis cannot be the result of unconscious chance. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Have you seen
\nrock-crystals?\u2026You have never seen a rock-crystal? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Yes. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It is pretty, isn\u2019t it? It is something very artistic. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And the movements of
\nthe sea, the movements of the air, of the wind, one can\u2019t help feeling that
\nbehind there is a consciousness or even many consciousnesses at work. In fact,
\nit is like that. Only the most superficial appearance is inconscient. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nwere reviewing all that has been done, and as if it were necessary to relive
\nall that in a flash before taking the next step.

\nplant-life contains in itself the obscure possibility of the conscious animal,
\nas the animal-mind is astir with the movements of feeling and perception and
\nthe rudiments of conception that are the first ground for man the thinker, so
\nman the mental being is sublimated by the endeavour of the evolutionary Energy
\nto develop out of him the spiritual man, the fully conscious being, man
\nexceeding his first material self and discoverer of his true self and highest
\nnature. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cBut
\nif this is to be accepted as the intention in Nature, there are two questions
\nthat put themselves at once and call for a definitive answer, \u2013 first, the
\nexact nature of the transition from mental to spiritual being and, when that is
\ngiven, the process and method of the evolution of the spiritual out of the
\nmental man. It would at first sight seem evident that as each gradation emerges
\nnot only out of its precedent grade but in it, as Life emerges in Matter and is
\nlargely limited and determined in its self-expression by its material
\nconditions, as Mind emerges in Life-in-Matter and is similarly limited and
\ndetermined in its self-expression by life-conditions and material conditions,
\nso Spirit too must emerge in a Mind embodied in Life-in-Matter and must be
\nlargely limited and determined by the mental conditions in which it has its
\nroots as well as the life-conditions, the material conditions of its existence
\nhere….\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

As the beginnings of the supramental life, which must be the next
\nrealisation in the unfolding of the universe, develop, perhaps not in a very
\nobvious way but very surely, it becomes more and <\/span><\/p>\n

more obvious that the most difficult way to approach this
\nsupramental life is intellectual activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

It could be said that it is much more difficult to pass from the
\nmental to the supramental life than to pass from a certain psychic emotion in
\nlife \u2013 something that is like a reflection, a luminous emanation of the divine
\nPresence in matter \u2013 to the supramental consciousness; it is much easier to
\npass from that into the supramental consciousness than to pass from the highest
\nintellectual speculation to any supramental vibration. Perhaps it is the word
\nthat misleads us! Perhaps it is because we call it \u201csupramental\u201d that we expect
\nto reach it through a higher intellectual mental activity? But the fact is very
\ndifferent. With this very high, very pure, very noble intellectual activity,
\none seems to move towards a kind of cold, powerless abstraction, a frozen, an
\nicy light which is surely very remote from life and still further away from the
\nexperience of the supramental reality. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In this new substance
\nwhich is spreading and acting in the world, there is a warmth, a power, a joy
\nso intense that all intellectual activity seems cold and dry beside it. And
\nthat is why the less one talks about these things the better it is. A single
\nmoment, a single impulse of deep and true love, an instant of the understanding
\nwhich lies in the divine Grace brings you much closer to the goal than all
\npossible explanations. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Even a kind of refined
\nsensation, subtle, clear, luminous, acute, which penetrates deep, opens the
\ndoor for you more than the subtlest explanations. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And if we carry the
\nexperience still further, it seems that when one comes to the work of
\ntransformation of the body, when some cells of the body, more ready than
\nothers, more refined, more subtle, more plastic, are able to feel concretely
\nthe presence of the divine Grace, the divine Will, the divine Power, this
\nKnowledge that is not intellectual but a knowledge by identity, when one feels
\nthis in the cells of the body, then the experience is so total, so imperative,
\nso living, concrete, tangible, real that everything else seems a vain dream. <\/span><\/p>\n

And so we may say that it is truly when the circle is complete and
\nthe two extremities touch, when the highest manifests in the most material,

\n\u201cmental honesty\u201d mean exactly? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It is a mind that does not attempt to deceive itself. And in fact
\nit is not an \u201cattempt\u201d, for it succeeds very well in doing it! <\/span><\/p>\n

It would seem that in the ordinary psychological constitution of
\nman, the almost constant function of the mind is to give an acceptable
\nexplanation of what goes on in the \u201cdesire-being\u201d, the vital, the most material
\nparts of the mind and the subtlest parts of the body. There is a kind of
\ngeneral complicity in all the parts of the being to give an explanation and
\neven a comfortable justification for everything we do, in order to avoid as far
\nas possible the painful impressions left by the mistakes we commit and
\nundesirable movements. For instance, unless one has undergone or taken up a
\nspecial training, whatever one does, the mind gives itself a favourable enough
\nexplanation of it, so that one is not troubled. Only under the pressure of
\nouter reactions or circumstances or movements coming from other people, does
\none gradually consent to look less favourably at what one is and does, and
\nbegins to ask oneself whether things could not be better than they are. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Spontaneously, the
\nfirst movement is what is known as self-defense. One puts oneself on one\u2019s
\nguard and quite spontaneously one wants a justification\u2026for the smallest
\nthings, absolutely insignificant things \u2013 is a normal attitude in life. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And explanations \u2013 one
\ngives them to oneself; it is only under the pressure of circumstances that one
\nbegins to give them to others or to another, but first one makes oneself very
\ncomfortable; first thing: \u201cIt was like that, for it had to be like that, and it
\nhappened because of this, and…\u201d, and it is always the fault of circumstances
\nor other people. And it truly requires an effort \u2013 unless, as I say, one has
\nundergone a discipline, has <\/span><\/p>\n

acquired the habit of doing it automatically requires an effort to
\nbegin to understand that perhaps things are not like this, that perhaps one has
\nnot done exactly what one ought to have done or reacted as one should. And even
\nwhen one begins to see it, a much greater effort is needed to recognise
\nit\u2026officially. <\/span><\/p>\n

When one begins to see that one has made a mistake, the first
\nmovement of the mind is to push it into the background and to put a cloak in
\nfront of it, the cloak of a very fine little explanation, and as long as one is
\nnot obliged to show it, one hides it. And this is what I call \u201clack of mental
\nhonesty\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>First, one deceives
\noneself by habit, but even when one begins not to deceive oneself,
\ninstinctively there is a movement of trying, trying to deceive oneself in order
\nto feel comfortable. And so a still greater step is necessary once one has
\nunderstood that one was deceiving oneself, to confess frankly, \u201cYes, I was
\ndeceiving myself.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>All these things are
\nso habitual, so automatic, as it were, that you are not even aware of them; but
\nwhen you begin to want to establish some discipline over your being, you make
\ndiscoveries which are really tremendously interesting. When you have discovered
\nthis, you become aware that you are living constantly in a\u2026the best word is
\n\u201cself-deception\u201d, a state of wilful deceit; that is, you deceive yourself
\nspontaneously. It is not that you need to reflect: spontaneously you put a
\npretty cloak over what you have done so that it doesn\u2019t show its true
\ncolours\u2026and all this for things which are so insignificant, which have so
\nlittle importance! It would be understandable, wouldn\u2019t it, if recognising your
\nmistake had serious consequences for your very existence \u2013 the instinct of
\nself-preservation would make you do it as a protection \u2013 but that is not the
\nquestion, it concerns things which are absolutely unimportant, of no
\nconsequence at all except that of having to tell yourself, \u201cI have made a
\nmistake.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This means that an
\neffort is needed in order to be mentally
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

sincere. There must be an effort, there must be a discipline. Of
\ncourse, I am not speaking of those who tell lies in order not to be caught, for
\neverybody knows that this should not be done. Besides, the most stupid lies are
\nthe most useless, for they are so flagrant that they can\u2019t deceive anyone. Such
\nexamples occur constantly; you catch someone doing something wrong and tell
\nhim, \u201cThat\u2019s how it is\u201d; he gives a silly explanation which nobody can
\nunderstand, nobody can accept; it is silly but he gives it in the hope of
\nshielding himself. It is spontaneous, you see, but he knows this is not done.
\nBut the other kind of deception is much more spontaneous and it is so habitual
\nthat one is not aware of it. So, when we speak of mental honesty, we speak of
\nsomething which is acquired by a very constant and sustained effort. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>You catch yourself,
\ndon\u2019t you, you suddenly catch yourself in the act of giving yourself somewhere
\nin your head or here (Mother indicates
\nthe heart<\/i>), here it is more serious\u2026giving a very favourable little
\nexplanation. And only when you can get a grip on yourself, there, hold fast and
\nlook at yourself clearly in the face and say, \u201cDo you think it is like that?\u201d,
\nthen, if you are very courageous and put a very strong pressure, in the end you
\ntell yourself, \u201cYes, I know very well that it is not like that!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>It sometimes takes
\nyears. Time must pass, one must have changed much within oneself, one\u2019s vision
\nof things must have become different, one must be in a different condition, in
\na different relation with circumstances, in order to see clearly, completely,
\nhow far one was deceiving oneself \u2013 and at that moment one was convinced that
\none was sincere.
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

\nperfect sincerity can only come when one rises above this sphere of falsehood
\nthat is life as we know it on earth, mental life, even the higher mental life. <\/span><\/p>\n

When one springs up into the higher sphere, into the world of
\nTruth, one will be able to see things as they truly are, and seeing them as
\nthey are, one will be able to live them in their truth. Then all falsehoods
\nwill naturally crumble. And since the favourable explanations will no longer
\nhave any purpose, they will disappear, for there will be nothing left to
\nexplain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nself-evident, Truth will shine through all forms, the possibility of error will
\ndisappear.

\u201cIt is quite
\ntrue that to a surface view Life seems only an operation of Matter, Mind an
\nactivity of Life, and it might seem to follow that what we call the soul or
\nspirit is only a power of mentality, soul a fine form of Mind, spirituality a high
\nactivity of the embodied mental being. But this is a superficial view of things
\ndue to the thought\u2019s concentrating on the appearance and process and not
\nlooking at what lies behind the process. One might as well on the same lines
\nhave concluded that electricity is only a product or operation of water and
\ncloud matter, because it is in such a field that lightning emerges; but a
\ndeeper inquiry has shown that both cloud and water have, on the contrary, the
\nenergy of electricity as their foundation, their constituent power or
\nenergy-substance: that which seems to be a result is, \u2013 in its reality, though
\nnot in its form, \u2013 the origin; the effect is in the essence pre-existent to the
\napparent cause, the principle of the emergent activity precedent to its present
\nfield of action. So it is throughout evolutionary Nature; Matter could not have
\nbecome animate if the principle of Life had not been there constituting Matter
\nand emerging as a phenomenon of Life-in-Matter; Life-in-Matter could not have
\nbegun to feel, perceive, think, reason, if the principle of Mind had not been
\nthere behind life and substance, constituting it as its field of operation and
\nemergent in the phenomenon of a thinking life and body: so too spirituality
\nemerging in Mind is the sign of a power which itself has founded and
\nconstituted life, mind and body and is now emerging as a spiritual being in a
\nliving and thinking body. How far this emergence will go, whether it will
\nbecome dominant<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\ntransform its instrument, is a subsequent question; but what is necessary first
\nto posit is the existence of Spirit as something else than Mind and greater
\nthan Mind, spirituality as something other than mentality and the spiritual
\nbeing therefore as something distinct from the mental being: Spirit is a final
\nevolutionary emergence because it is the original involutionary element and
\nfactor. Evolution is an inverse action of the involution: what is an ultimate
\nand last derivation in the involution is the first to appear in the evolution;
\nwhat was original and primal in the involution is in the evolution the last and
\nsupreme emergence.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Today I have been asked to speak to you about the Avatar.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first thing I have to say is that Sri Aurobindo has written on
\nthis subject and the person who has asked me the question would do well to
\nbegin by reading what Sri Aurobindo has written. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I shall not speak to
\nyou about that, for it is better to read it for yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>But I could speak to
\nyou of a very old tradition, more ancient than the two known lines of spiritual
\nand occult tradition, that is, the Vedic and Chaldean lines; a tradition which
\nseems to have been at the origin of these two known traditions, in which it is
\nsaid that when, as a result of the action of the adverse forces \u2013 known in the
\nHindu tradition as the Asuras \u2013 the world, instead of developing according to
\nits law of Light and inherent consciousness, was plunged into the darkness,
\ninconscience and ignorance that we know, the Creative Power implored the
\nSupreme Origin, asking him for a special intervention which could save this
\ncorrupted universe; and in reply to this prayer there was emanated from the
\nSupreme Origin a special Entity, of Love and Consciousness, who cast himself
\ndirectly into the most inconscient matter to begin there the work of awakening <\/span><\/p>\n

it to the original Consciousness and Love.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the old narratives this Being is described as stretched out in
\na deep sleep at the bottom of a very dark cave, and in his sleep there emanated
\nfrom him prismatic rays of light which gradually spread into the Inconscience
\nand embedded themselves in all the elements of this Inconscience to begin there
\nthe work of Awakening. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If one consciously
\nenters into this Inconscient, one can still see there this same marvellous
\nBeing, still in deep sleep, continuing his work of emanation, spreading his
\nLight; and he will continue to do it until the Inconscience is no longer
\ninconscient, until Darkness disappears from the world \u2013 and the whole creation
\nawakens to the Supramental Consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And it is remarkable
\nthat this wonderful Being strangely resembles the one whom I saw in vision one
\nday, the Being who is at the other extremity, at the confines of form and the
\nFormless. But that one was in a golden, crimson glory, whereas in his sleep the
\nother Being was of a shining diamond whiteness emanating opalescent rays. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, this is the
\norigin of all Avatars. He is, so to say, the first universal Avatar who,
\ngradually, has assumed more and more conscious bodies and finally manifested in
\na kind of recognised line of Beings who have descended directly from the
\nSupreme to perfect this work of preparing the universe so that, through a
\ncontinuous progression, it may become ready to receive and manifest the
\nsupramental Light in its entirety.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In every country,
\nevery tradition, the event has been presented in a special way, with different
\nlimitations, different details, particular features, but truly speaking, the
\norigin of all these stories is the same, and that is what we could call a
\ndirect, conscious intervention of the Supreme in the darkest matter, without
\ngoing through all the intermediaries, in order to awaken this Matter to the
\nreceptivity of the Divine Forces. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The intervals
\nseparating these various incarnations seem to become shorter and shorter, as
\nif, to the extent that Matter
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

became more and more ready, the action could accelerate and become
\nmore and more rapid in its movement, more and more conscious too, more and more
\neffective and decisive. <\/span><\/p>\n

And it will go on multiplying and intensifying until the entire
\nuniverse becomes the total Avatar of the Supreme.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
