\nsleep, our consciousness goes out, doesn’t it? But other people have dreams in
\nwhich I appear. So what happens? Does the consciousness divide itself or are
\nother people’s dreams only their own imagination? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\nMost often, it is
\nthe vital consciousness that goes out of the body and has the form, the
\nappearance of the person’s body. If one person dreams of another, it means that
\nboth have met at night, most often in the vital region, but it can also happen
\nelsewhere, in the subtle physical or the mental. There are any number of
\ndifferent possibilities in dreams. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nattractions, vital exchanges, sexual relations, attachments, even friendships,
\nand many other things besides. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nBut all that is
\nnot even the shadow of love nor even its deformation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nThese are all
\nmental and vital, sentimental or sexual activities, and nothing more. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n   
\n<\/span>What is the
\ndifference between desire and aspiration, and between selfishness and
\nself-realisation? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\n <\/span><\/p>\n

\nDesire is a vital
\nmovement, aspiration is a psychic movement. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\nWhen one has had a
\ntrue aspiration, unselfish and sincere, one cannot even ask the question
\nanymore; for the vibration of aspiration, luminous and calm, has nothing to do
\nwith the vibration of desire, which is passionate, dark and often violent.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\nSelfishness means
\nwanting everything for oneself, understanding nothing but oneself, caring for
\nothers only insofar as they are necessary or important to oneself. In French,
\nself-realisation (r\u00e9alisation du Soi<\/i>) means discovering the divine centre
\nin one’s being. In English, self-fulfilment is generally taken in the sense \u201cto
\nbe successful\u201d. Sri Aurobindo in his  <\/span><\/p>\n

\nwritings uses the
\nword \u201cself-realisation\u201d to mean realisation of the Self, that is to say,

\nThe first step is
\nto find, deep within oneself, behind the desires and impulses, a luminous
\nconsciousness which is always present and manifests the physical being. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\nOrdinarily, one
\nbecomes aware of the presence of this consciousness only when one has to face
\nsome danger or an unexpected event or a great sorrow. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\nOne has, then, to
\ncome into conscious contact with that and learn to do so at will. The rest will
\nfollow. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nGenerally it is in
\nthe heart, behind the solar plexus, that one finds this luminous presence.

\nbe the result of changing the vital into something good; in other words, what

\nThe vital is the
\nreceptacle of all the bad impulses, all wickedness, cowardice, weakness and
\navarice. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhen the vital is
\nconverted, the impulses are good instead of being bad; wickedness is replaced by
\nkindness, avarice by generosity; weakness disappears and strength and endurance
\ntake its place; cowardice is replaced by courage and energy.  <\/span><\/p>\n

\nnever discussed with my friends the question of knowing why we are here on
\nearth, but I have thought about it and the only answer I could get is that at
\nleast we are here in the Ashram to manifest the Divine upon earth. But there
\nremains one question: if everything is divine, even the adverse forces, and if
\neverything has been created by Him and He can do everything, then how is it that
\nHe takes so much time and uses such roundabout ways? What joy does He get in
\ncreating unconscious things and making them conscious? And why all these
\nmisfortunes and sufferings? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\n <\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt is a question
\nthat all thinking people have asked. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\nSome have
\nconsidered the problem more deeply and asked themselves whether human beings,
\nwho are so small and limited, could see things as they really are; and in the
\nhope of understanding better, they have sought for a diviner vision, a global
\nand true vision \u2013<\/i> with the result of Yoga. And those who have succeeded
\nin their endeavour have found that when one is united with the Divine, one’s
\nvision of things changes totally, and they have all come to the same conclusion:
\nunite with the Divine and you will understand. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe work of
\nunifying the being consists of: <\/span><\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\n(1) becoming aware
\nof one’s psychic being. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n    <\/span>
\n(2) putting before
\nthe psychic being, as one becomes aware of them, all one’s movements, impulses,
\nthoughts and acts of will, so that the psychic being may accept or reject each
\nof these movements, impulses, thoughts or acts of will. Those that are accepted
\nwill be kept and carried out; those that are rejected will be driven out of the
\nconsciousness so that they may never come back again. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nthat there are more accidents here than elsewhere. Certainly there ought to be
\nless. But for that, the children who study here must make an effort to grow in
\nconsciousness (a thing they could do more easily here than elsewhere).
\nUnfortunately, however, few of them take the trouble to do it, so they lose the
\nfine opportunity that has been given to them. <\/span>

\nof their own egoism\u201d\u00b9  and in one of your letters, you have said that one must
\nnot rely on one’s ego but on the psychic. Mother, will you explain this to me?

\nwe are not in an age when men have been left to their own means. The Divine has

\nIt is the vital
\nthat gets touched and moved. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nIf you watch
\nmentally, the interest is no longer the same; instead of being moved or
\ntroubled, you can calmly judge the value of a film, whether it is well made or
