To fire? To the wind? To the earth? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>What is life? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>What is good? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>What is there beyond the world?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>And<br \/>\nso on. Great were the questions and great must be the Rishi who could answer<br \/>\nthem all! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>But<br \/>\n<span class=\"SpellE\">Bharadwaja&#8217;s<\/span> mind was the mind of a man who asks and<br \/>\nasks ever and again, and never knows enough. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<br \/>\nchild is the supreme questioner, he is always asking, \u201cWhat is this? What is<br \/>\nthat? How is it made? What makes this thing move? What makes the lightning<br \/>\nflash? Why are there tides? Where does gold come from? And coal? And iron? How<br \/>\nis a book printed?..\u201d And many more questions besides. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Both children and men ask questions. They also<br \/>\nreply. When we know something, we can answer questions. We can teach, we can<br \/>\nspread knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>What shall we learn? What shall we teach?<br \/>\nShall we try to learn everything that has happened throughout the ages? Shall<br \/>\nwe attempt to learn every word that man can pronounce? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>In<br \/>\nthe poem of the Mahabharata, the following words are used to describe the<br \/>\nvarious kinds of arrows shot by the <span class=\"SpellE\">Pandava<\/span> brothers<br \/>\nand other warriors: <span class=\"SpellE\">sara<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">ishu<\/span>,<br \/>\n<span class=\"SpellE\">sayaka<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">patri<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">kanda<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">vishikha<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">naracha<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">vishatha<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">prushatka<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">bhalla<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">tomara<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">ishika<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">silimukha<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">anjalika<\/span>. We certainly<br \/>\ndo not need to learn all these names for arrows. And there are many other names<br \/>\nof things <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 243<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoPlainText\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>that we do not need to learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>We<br \/>\nspeak of the news: we think of shipwrecks, murders, robberies, quarrels,<br \/>\nlawsuits, wars, fires, concerts, weddings, funerals and thousands of other<br \/>\nthings that we read of in a few minutes and forget about immediately<br \/>\nafterwards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>We<br \/>\nopen the Koran and at the head of the chapters of this sacred book we read the<br \/>\nword \u201cNews\u201d and immediately we think of shipwrecks, murders\u2026 but wait! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<br \/>\nProphet Mohammed was neither a frivolous person who took pleasure in news of<br \/>\nevil deeds nor a gossip who taught nothing noble. Let us read the beginning of<br \/>\nthe chapter on \u201cNews\u201d: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the<br \/>\nMerciful. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>Of what are they speaking together? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>Of the great news. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>Are they disputing about it? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>No, but they wish to know. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>Surely, they will know. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHave we not made the earth as a bed? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And the mountains as tent-pegs? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>Were you not created in pairs? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And have we not made you sleep for your rest?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And made the night for a mantle? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And the day to earn your bread? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And built above you the seven firmaments? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And set there a burning light? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And made showers of water fall from the<br \/>\nbrimming clouds <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>To bring forth grain and herb everywhere <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0 <\/span>And gardens thick with trees?\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Thus the Prophet kindled hope in the hearts<br \/>\nand minds of men and made them think of greater things, things that have a<br \/>\nlasting beauty, things that teach man how noble is the world of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>So<br \/>\nwe agree that there are words and things and certain <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 244<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoPlainText\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>kinds of news that are not worth hearing and repeating. But other<br \/>\nthings, on the contrary, are worth hearing and repeating, even though it may<br \/>\ncost us much time, trouble and effort to find them out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Man&#8217;s power lies within his thought. The<br \/>\nlimbs, the hands that are so skilful, are the slaves of his thought which<br \/>\ndecides and directs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>And<br \/>\nsince the human race first dwelt on earth, how great have been man&#8217;s conquests<br \/>\nover Nature! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>We<br \/>\ncan see this power pictured in the tale of <span class=\"SpellE\">Rama&#8217;s<\/span><br \/>\ncrossing over the sea. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>When he reached the shores of <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>India<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>, and learned that his dear wife Sita was<br \/>\na captive in the <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>island<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> of <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Ceylon<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>, he prepared to cross the waters. Vast was his army, but it was<br \/>\nmade up of monkeys and bears. How could they cross the turbulent waters? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"SpellE\">Rama&#8217;s<\/span> intelligence was profound, his sagacity keen and his<br \/>\nheart full of courage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>First he spoke gently to the old Ocean and<br \/>\nsaid: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Great<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sea<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>, I beseech you, let my army pass.\u201d But<br \/>\nafter he had waited three days, there was still no reply from the waves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Then Rama called his brother: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cLakshman, bring me my bow and arrows. I have<br \/>\nwasted my words on this sea, just as a man wastes good seeds by sowing them in<br \/>\nsand.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Rama, the divine hero, shot an arrow into the<br \/>\ndeep waters and the shaft gave a fiery pain to the ocean, and all the fish were<br \/>\nfull of fear. Then the spirit of the ocean took the form of a Brahmin who knelt<br \/>\nbefore the Lord with a golden dish full of jewels as an offering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<br \/>\nOcean clasped the lotus-feet of Rama and said: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cGreat Lord, forgive my sin. I am like my kin<br \/>\nof the air, the earth and the fire. They are heavy and slow and so accustomed<br \/>\nto power that they do not answer the call of a Lord like you. No hero before<br \/>\nyou has ever made me obey his will. In <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 245<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoPlainText\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>you I see my master. And <span class=\"SpellE\">Nala<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Nila<\/span> fastened the wood and stone together so that<br \/>\neverything floated firmly on the surface of the sea. Then the army marched<br \/>\nacross it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Rama sat on a <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>mountain<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> of <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>India<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> and watched the countless troops moving<br \/>\nacross the bridge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Just as Rama forced the spirit of the ocean to<br \/>\nobey him, so does man&#8217;s thought, the glory of humanity, conquer the sea, and<br \/>\nmany other things besides. Man masters the wind, since he makes it blow his<br \/>\nsailing ships and turn his windmills. He conquers the ice and the snow, for<br \/>\nexplorers have <span class=\"SpellE\">travelled<\/span> to the frozen lands of the<br \/>\nNorth Pole and the South Pole and have climbed the highest mountains. He<br \/>\nconquers the beasts, for all over the world he slays the animals that are a<br \/>\ndanger to him and his family: lions, tigers, wolves, snakes and even sharks.<br \/>\nAlthough he has less power over the great ocean, he has made his strength felt<br \/>\non land. And while he has rid himself of the animals that are harmful to him,<br \/>\nhe has kept and bred the animals that are useful to him: the ox, the horse, the<br \/>\nsheep, the \u2026 elephant, etc.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>But<br \/>\nall this is the conquest of things by his hands and by his tools and weapons.<br \/>\nAnd hands and tools and weapons are the servants of his thought. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Man<br \/>\nconquers by knowledge.
