From that moment, it is easy to realise that all the efforts of<br \/>\nmankind converge towards the same goal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>It<br \/>\nis true that collectively or individually, men follow very different paths to<br \/>\nreach it; some of these paths twist and turn so much that they seem at first<br \/>\nsight to move away from the goal rather than to lead towards it; but all are<br \/>\ngoing there, consciously or unconsciously, swiftly or more slowly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>What<br \/>\nthen is this goal? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>It<br \/>\nis one with the purpose of man&#8217;s life and his mission in the universe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<br \/>\ngoal: \u201cCall him what you will, for to the wise, he is the Possessor of all<br \/>\nnames.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<br \/>\nTao of the Chinese \u2013 The Brahman of the Hindus \u2013 The Law of the Buddhists \u2013 The<br \/>\nGood of Hermes \u2013 That which cannot be named, according to the ancient Jewish<br \/>\ntradition \u2013 The God of the Christians \u2013 The Allah of the Muslims \u2013 The Justice,<br \/>\nthe Truth of the materialists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<br \/>\npurpose of man&#8217;s life is to become conscious of That. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>His<br \/>\nmission is to manifest It. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>All<br \/>\nreligions, all the teachings of all the sages are nothing other than methods to<br \/>\nreach this goal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>They can be classified into three principal<br \/>\ncategories. First method&#8211;intellectual: The love of Truth, the search for the<br \/>\nAbsolute. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>By<br \/>\ndiscernment, study, reflection, analysis, control and concentration of the<br \/>\nthought, one dispels the illusion of personality, a whirl of atoms in a single<br \/>\nsubstance which is itself nothing but an appearance: a condensation of the<br \/>\nether. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>When we say <i>myself <\/i>what do we speak of? The body? The<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 125<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>sensations? The feelings? The thoughts? All this has no stability.<br \/>\nThe appearance of continuity comes from a rigorous determinism obtaining in<br \/>\neach of these realms of the being; and into this determinism there enter as<br \/>\nmany external as internal agents. Where then is the self, that is to say,<br \/>\nsomething permanent, constant, ever the same? In order to find it, to find this<br \/>\nabsolute, we must proceed from depth to depth, from relativity to relativity \u2013<br \/>\nfor all that is in form is relative \u2013 until we reach That which is Unthinkable<br \/>\nto our reason, Unutterable to our language, but knowable by identification \u2013<br \/>\nfor we carry That in ourselves, it is the very centre and life of our being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Second<br \/>\nmethod \u2013 the love of God. It is the method of those who have a developed<br \/>\nreligious sense. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Aspiration towards the Divine Essence of all<br \/>\nthings that we have perceived in a moment of integral illumination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Then self-consecration to this Divine Essence,<br \/>\nto this Eternal Law, integral self-giving, at every moment, in all one&#8217;s<br \/>\nactions. Complete surrender: one is now only a docile instrument, a faithful<br \/>\nservant before the Supreme Master. The Love is so complete that it causes a<br \/>\ndetachment from all that is not the Divine Absolute and perfect concentration<br \/>\non Him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBesides, it is not impossible to rise higher<br \/>\nthan that, for love itself is a veil between the lover and the Beloved.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Identification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Third method \u2013 the love of humanity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>As<br \/>\na consequence of a clear vision, an intense perception of the immense suffering<br \/>\nof humanity, there arises the resolution to consecrate oneself entirely to<br \/>\nmaking this suffering cease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Self-oblivion in the giving of all one&#8217;s<br \/>\nthoughts, all one&#8217;s energies, all one&#8217;s activities to succour others, in<br \/>\nhowever small a degree. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWith your hearts overflowing with compassion,<br \/>\ngo forth into this world torn by pain, be instructors, and wherever the<br \/>\ndarkness of ignorance rules, there light a torch.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>This consecration to humanity manifests in<br \/>\nfour domains. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 126<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>One can give to others in four ways: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Material gifts. Intellectual gifts: knowledge.<br \/>\nSpiritual gifts: harmony, beauty, rhythm. The integral gift, which can be made only<br \/>\nby those who have followed the three paths, who have synthesised within<br \/>\nthemselves all the methods of development, of becoming conscious of That which<br \/>\nis Eternal: the gift of example. The example which is not self-conscious and<br \/>\nwhich one gives because one is, because one lives in the Eternal Divine<br \/>\nConsciousness. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 127<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><b><br \/>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n<a name=\"01_Two Parallel Movements\"><font size=\"3\">Two<br \/>\nParallel Movements <\/font> <\/a> <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:81.0pt;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"3\">T<\/font><\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>here should be two parallel movements in the evolution of an<br \/>\nindividual; and it is because he generally neglects one or the other of these<br \/>\nmovements in order to concentrate on one alone, that his progress is so halting<br \/>\nand so unbalanced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>One<br \/>\nof these movements is to become conscious of all the constituent elements of<br \/>\nthe being, material and sensory as well as intellectual and spiritual; we must<br \/>\nbecome acquainted with the mechanism of the life within us, with all its<br \/>\ntendencies, qualities, faculties and varied activities, very impartially, that<br \/>\nis, without any preconceived idea of good or evil, without any absolute or<br \/>\narbitrary judgment (for our judgments are inevitably lacking in<br \/>\nclear-sightedness) about what should subsist and what should disappear, what<br \/>\nshould be encouraged and what should be suppressed. Our vision of what we are<br \/>\nmust be objective, without bias, if we want it to be sincere and integral: we<br \/>\nare faced with a universe which we must explore down to its smallest details,<br \/>\nknow in its most obscure and infinitesimal elements, with a scientific attitude<br \/>\nof perfect mental impersonality, that is, without any <i>a priori<\/i> judgments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Whatever we may think, this work of<br \/>\nobservation, analysis and introspection is never completed. At all events, as<br \/>\nlong as we are on earth in a physical body, we should always study the<br \/>\nimmensely complex being that we are, so that no element may elude our knowledge<br \/>\nand therefore our control:<span>\u00a0 <\/span><i>for we can only master what we know and<br \/>\ncommand what we have mastered.<\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>This brings us to the second movement which<br \/>\nshould exist parallel to and simultaneous with the first. It is the<br \/>\nconsecration, the constant and constantly repeated surrender of all the<br \/>\nelements subject to our control to the Supreme and Divine Law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Each element that has become conscious of<br \/>\nitself, each tendency, each faculty, must surrender to the Sovereign Guidance<br \/>\nof the Eternal Essence of Being, with the simple trust of a child; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 128<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>She will order, classify and utilise all these elements in the<br \/>\nright way; She and She alone can separate what can be used from what cannot,<br \/>\nwhat must be encouraged from what must be eliminated; and, no doubt, as before<br \/>\nHer all is of equal value, all can be used, since by Her all is transformed,<br \/>\nillumined, transfigured: all that becomes conscious of Her and gives itself to<br \/>\nHer becomes Herself and thus escapes all notions of good and evil, which are<br \/>\npurely external and human. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>One<br \/>\nof these movements, one of these attitudes without the other is incomplete and<br \/>\none-sided. To consecrate our being in one block to the Supreme Essence is not<br \/>\nenough: all the elements that we do not know and have not mastered elude this<br \/>\nconsecration and therefore follow their own law instead of conforming to the<br \/>\nEternal Law, and become the source of every disturbance, every unexpected<br \/>\nrevolt in one who had yet thought himself to be entirely a servant of The Law.<br \/>\nBut he was forgetful of all the unknown nooks in his being which also have a<br \/>\nclaim to life and activity and which are manifested in their turn, but in an<br \/>\nactivity that is disorderly and disharmonious relative to the being as a whole,<br \/>\nsince they elude the central will. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>On<br \/>\nthe other hand, to become conscious of ourselves in our smallest details is<br \/>\nvain and sterile, even dangerous, if it is not done for the sake of order, so<br \/>\nthat the Divine Essence can be made the Omnipotent ruler of all these elements,<br \/>\nif we do not secure their unreserved surrender to Her supreme guidance, to The<br \/>\nSovereign Law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Only in the balanced union of these two<br \/>\nattitudes can one truly, integrally, call oneself a Servant of the Eternal.<br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 129<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><b><br \/>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n<a name=\"02_Towards the Supreme Light\"><font size=\"3\">Towards<br \/>\nthe Supreme Light <\/font> <\/a> <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:1.0in;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"3\">S<\/font><\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>ome people \u2013 nearly all \u2013 live in their sensations, to the extent<br \/>\nof being conscious only of the present moment. They must be taught the<br \/>\nconsciousness of their whole life and shown the extent to which their feelings<br \/>\nare transient and will be replaced, in the course of their existence, by<br \/>\ninnumerable contradictory sensations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>(The candle) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Those who have become conscious of their life<br \/>\nin its entirety must be taught to identify their consciousness with that of the<br \/>\nearth (to enter into a depth of their being which is one with the terrestrial<br \/>\ndestinies). What is the duration of one life compared with the duration of the<br \/>\nearth? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>(The gaslight) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Those who have become conscious of the<br \/>\nterrestrial life must be taught to identify their consciousness with that of<br \/>\nthe universe, to find within themselves that which is one with the universe and<br \/>\nwill last as long as the universe. (What is the duration of the earth in<br \/>\ncomparison to that of the universe? The sky was perfectly clear and colourless. The summit of the<br \/>\nmountain was covered with rich pastures. In these pastures, four herds of cows<br \/>\nwere grazing, guarded by four cowherds. These herds were at an equal distance<br \/>\nfrom one another, thus forming approximately the four corners of a square. Each<br \/>\nguardian had his own very particular appearance and characteristics. \u201cHe\u201d was<br \/>\nseeking something that he wanted to express and make effective, and for this he<br \/>\nlacked certain elements. These elements lay beyond the summit of the mountain<br \/>\nand He was asking me if there was any way of going there to fetch them. The<br \/>\nquestion was voiced aloud and all the cows of the herd that was nearest to us<br \/>\nbounded towards Him, lowing with delight. The man who was leading them, tall,<br \/>\nstrong, stocky, clothed in animal skins, white-skinned and very hairy, with<br \/>\nblack, shaggy hair and a square face, went towards Him and said to Him in a<br \/>\nloud voice, \u201cI put myself entirely at your disposal, my cows want to serve you<br \/>\nand so do I. I shall lead them to the place where the elements of knowledge you<br \/>\nwant to acquire are lying and we shall bring them to you.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>While he was speaking, the herd which was on<br \/>\nthe right in the same line drew near, led by its guardian, who was interested<br \/>\nand came to listen. He was tall, thin, sumptuously dressed, with smooth skin,<br \/>\nan oval, elongated face and very black and silky hair falling to his shoulders.<br \/>\nOne part of his garment was red, but there were several other colours. He was<br \/>\nfriendly and well-disposed. We wonder why as we proceed on our way, when we hear<br \/>\nourselves being called by a shepherd dressed in white, who tells us to join the<br \/>\npeople on the bank by the roadside. And in answer to our enquiry, he tells us<br \/>\nthat an enormous herd of cows and bulls has been kept prisoner until now, but<br \/>\nthat the time has come to let them loose, that the rope which is holding them<br \/>\nback will be removed, and that they are going to charge and are likely to<br \/>\ndestroy everything in their path. I reply, \u201cIndeed these creatures are full of<br \/>\nvigour and sometimes even of apparently blind violence, but for people such as<br \/>\nwe two who are walking straight on our way, there is nothing to fear; bulls<br \/>\nhave never done us any harm.\u201d But the shepherd insists, saying that it is<br \/>\nreally something exceptional and unprecedented. So as not to vex him we stop<br \/>\nand stand by the roadside in front of the crowding people. But there again he<br \/>\ninsists, saying, \u201cNot there, not there, you will be trampled down, behind.\u201d And<br \/>\nhe makes us stand behind all the others, back from the side of the road. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>At<br \/>\nthat moment, in the distance, I catch sight of the immense herd of cows and<br \/>\nbulls; the rope that held them back is removed and they surge forward, charging<br \/>\nstraight in front of them; and if anyone had been in their path, they would<br \/>\ncertainly have trampled him down. When all have passed, the leader of the herd,<br \/>\nwho had been kept until last, is let loose. He is a splendid, enormous white<br \/>\nbull. Instead of following the same path as the others, he turns to the right,<br \/>\nin front of us, following the descending path. But after a moment he stops, looking<br \/>\nfor something, does not find it, retraces his steps, and finally stations<br \/>\nhimself just in front of me. Then I see that it is a triple bull, composed of<br \/>\nthree bulls closely bound together. To my left there was a priest who, at the sight of this<br \/>\nenormous creature charging upon us and halting just in front of me, is seized<br \/>\nwith a great fear. And in his fright he begins to move restlessly. Then I say<br \/>\nto him, \u201cWell then, what about your faith in God? If He has decided that you<br \/>\nare to be trampled down by this bull, won&#8217;t you find that His will is good?\u201d<br \/>\nRather ashamed of himself, he wants to look brave, so he starts talking to the<br \/>\nbull and giving him friendly pats on the <i>muzzle<\/i>.<br \/>\nBut the powerful creature was beginning to lose patience. And I was thinking,<br \/>\n\u201cWith his fear, this fool will really end up by causing a disaster.\u201d \u201cWe had<br \/>\nbetter go away,\u201d I said, turning towards \u201cHim\u201d. And without any further care for<br \/>\nthe bull, we set out on our way once more. We have scarcely taken a few steps<br \/>\non the road when we see the bull quietly passing beside us, calm and strong. A<br \/>\nlittle farther on, I see another bull coming in the opposite direction, all<br \/>\nreddish-brown, with a wild and ferocious look, charging with its huge horns<br \/>\npointed forward. I look back towards \u201cHim\u201d, walking a few steps behind me, and<br \/>\nI say to him, \u201cThis one is the really dangerous creature, the one that is alone<br \/>\nand going in the opposite direction to the others. This one has evil<br \/>\nintentions. It cannot even see us because we are on the straight path and are<br \/>\nprotected. But I am much afraid for the others.\u201d Still a little farther on we<br \/>\nhear a galloping sound behind us, as if the ferocious bull were coming back<br \/>\nwith others. I feel that it is time for us to reach the goal. At that moment<br \/>\nthe road seems to be closed; in front of us there is a door that I want to<br \/>\nopen, but my hand slips on the knob and I cannot turn it. And yet time is<br \/>\npressing. Then I distinctly hear the deep Voice, \u201cLook.\u201d I look up, and right<br \/>\nin front of us, beside the closed door, I see a wide-open door leading into a<br \/>\nsquare room which is the goal. And the voice resumes, \u201cEnter. On my left a raised throne with several steps, and on<br \/>\nthe throne sat the Lord of Nations.\u00b9 This I knew although I had not looked at<br \/>\nhim. To my right at the far end of the immense room, in a kind of alcove lit<br \/>\nfrom above, sat a young woman \u2013 a nation. She was a small, dumpy child with<br \/>\nvery dark hair and a pale and mat complexion. She had put on a wedding-dress,<br \/>\nwith a crown of white flowers on her head (the dress was mostly white with some<br \/>\nblue and a few touches of gold). I knew that I had helped this nation to dress<br \/>\nin this way, and to climb the mountain and the tower to come up to the room.<br \/>\nShe had come to offer herself as a bride to the Lord of Nations, and for this<br \/>\npurpose she was to undergo a series of ordeals that the Lord wanted to impose<br \/>\nupon her in order to know whether she was worthy of him. These ordeals were the<br \/>\nordeals of Terror. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>For<br \/>\nthe first ordeal he had a full glass as well as a decanter brought to her. And<br \/>\nshe was to drink the contents of both. To her they seemed to be blood \u2013 human<br \/>\nblood newly shed. And He, from the height of his throne, was saying to her, \u201cDrink<br \/>\nthis blood to show that you are not afraid.\u201d The poor child was trembling with<br \/>\ndisgust and did not dare touch the ghastly beverage. But at that hour, Lord,<br \/>\nYou had given me the full consciousness and power of the Truth. From where I<br \/>\nstood I could <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">\u00b9 <\/font> <\/span><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">The Lord of Nations is an asura, a hostile<br \/>\nbeing of the mentalised vital plane. And scenes, both vast and<br \/>\ncomplex, of possible realisations follow one after another, streaming endlessly<br \/>\nin the splendour of their light and love. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Besides, at present, the smallest incident,<br \/>\nthe slightest contact with the outside world serves as a pretext for<br \/>\ninnumerable constructions which to the mentality appear vast, luminous, full of<br \/>\nan intense life and a great power for realisation. They<br \/>\nare disindividualised, as it were, reduced to an elemental state, to the state<br \/>\nof natural forces which, like the wind, the storm or the waters, accomplish<br \/>\ntheir earthly work, moved by a Will of which they are unconscious. They are no<br \/>\nlonger men but masses that move and act; and even the innumerable instances<br \/>\nwhich seem to spring from courage, from individual heroism, are yet akin to the<br \/>\nheroism of bees or ants \u2013 almost mechanical gestures, instinctive ges-<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 138<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoPlainText\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>tures \u2013 induced in an isolated element by the collective consciousness<br \/>\nof the genius of the race. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>Discarding all mental constructions, sensing<br \/>\nthem to be poor and strengthless compared to the realising, destructive power<br \/>\nat their command, they will be invincible instruments of the transforming Will;<br \/>\nand until they have gone to the very end of their task nothing can possibly be<br \/>\nattempted for future reconstructions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>At<br \/>\npresent these forces, for the major part at least, are closely linked to the<br \/>\ndivine Consciousness which is guiding their surging flood, directing the flow<br \/>\nof their seemingly untamed and untamable torrent \u2013 indeed, because it is not<br \/>\nsubject to any mental guidance, they obey its impulsion: will they know how,<br \/>\nwill they be able to obey to the very end? Will they not let themselves be<br \/>\ncarried away by their own movement?
