I don’t think there is much difference! <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet Mother, what does a \u201ccandid\u201d faith mean? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Candid? It is simple, sincere and does not
\ndoubt. We speak mostly of the candour of a child, who has a simple faith
\nwithout any doubts. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet Mother, do we push the divine Grace away from us every time we
\nmake a mistake? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Eh? You push it away every time you make a
\nmistake? <\/span><\/p>\n

Well, there are two different kinds of
\nmistakes. There is the fault committed through ignorance. That remain a fault,
\nand it puts a veil between the Grace and you, but it is a fault made without
\nknowing that one is making a mistake. But as soon as
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

one knows that it is a mistake, one must
\nabsolutely refrain from making it, because each time one makes it, it is true
\nthat one builds a wall between oneself and the divine Grace. <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a very big difference between the
\nmistake made through ignorance which one will not make again as soon as one
\nknows it is a mistake, and the mistake made knowing that it is a mistake. And
\nthis, indeed, is called obstinacy<\/i>!
\nAnd this is more serious, it is even very serious! It veils the consciousness
\nvery much, veils it so much that after some time one no longer knows at all
\nthat one is making mistakes. One makes them thinking that he doesn’t. One gives
\nso many excuses and justifications for everything he does, that he ends up by
\nbelieving that he is no longer making any mistakes at all. Then, here, it
\nbecomes very serious, because one is incorrigible! <\/span><\/p>\n

What is the difference between receptivity and opening? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

We have already spoken about this once. I
\nhave already answered. And I have told you I won’t repeat twice the same thing,
\nbecause I want you to get into the habit of remembering what I have said. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother, what does \u201can egoistic faith… tainted by ambition\u201d mean? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, for instance, if one wants to become
\nsomebody very important, to have a high position or attract the admiration of
\npeople around him, to become a great sadhak, a great sannyasi, a great yogi,
\ne., somebody quite important, that is called having a faith full of ambition.
\nYou have the faith that this may happen, you have faith in the Divine, but it
\nis for your own small personal vainglory; and this is no longer something pure,
\nsincere and true. It is something that’s entirely for personal profit.
\nNaturally, there is no questions in this of any self-giving; it is a hoarding of
\nforces
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

as much as it is possible for you to hoard
\nthem, that is to say, the very opposite of the true movement. This happen much
\noftener than one would think…\u00a0 <\/span>This
\nmovement of ambition is often hidden right in the depths of the being and it
\npushes you, like this, from behind…\u00a0 <\/span>It
\nwhips you so that you get on. It is a kind of veiled pride. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother, why do these people receive the force, since the Divine knows
\nthat they are not sincere? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Listen, my child, the Divine never goes by
\nhuman notions in His ways of acting. You must get that well into your head,
\nonce and for all. He probably does things without what we call reasons. But
\nanyway, if He has reasons they are not the same as human reasons, and certainly<\/i> He does not<\/i> have the see of justice as it is understood by men. <\/span><\/p>\n

For example, you imagine very easily that
\na man who is craving for wealth and tries to deceive people in order to get
\nmoney…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>According to your idea of
\njustice, this man ought to be deprived of all his wealth and reduced to
\npoverty. We find that usually just the opposite happens. But that, of course,
\nis only a matter of appearances. Behind the appearances, there is something
\nelse…\u00a0 <\/span>He exchanges this for other
\npossibilities. He may have money, but he no longer has a conscience. And, in
\nfact, what almost always happen is that when he has the money he desired, he is
\nnot happy…\u00a0 <\/span>And the more he has,
\nusually the less happy he is! He is tormented, you see, by the wealth he has gained.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

You must not judge things from an outer
\nsuccess or a semblance of defeat. We may say \u2013 and generally this is what
\nalmost always happens \u2013 we could say that the Divine gives what one desires,
\nand of all lessons this is the best! For, if your desire is inconscient,
\nobscure, egoistic, you increase the unconsciousness, the darkness and egoism
\nwithin yourself; that is to say, this takes you farther and farther away from
\nthe truth, from consciousness
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

and happiness. It takes you far away from
\nthe Divine. And for the Divine, naturally, only one thing is true \u2013 the divine
\nConsciousness, the divine <\/span>Union<\/span>. And each time you put material things in
\nfront, you become more and more materialistic and go farther and farther away
\nfrom full success. <\/span><\/p>\n

But for the Truth that other success is a terrible
\ndefeat… You have exchanged truth for falsehood! <\/span><\/p>\n

To judge from appearances and apparent
\nsuccess is precisely an act of complete ignorance. Even for the most hardened
\nman, for whom everything has apparently been successful, even for him there is always
\na counterpart. And this kind of hardening of the being which is produced, this
\nveil which is formed, a thicker and thicker veil, between the outer
\nconsciousness and the inner truth, becomes, one day or another, altogether
\nintolerable. It is usually paid for very dearly \u2013 outer success. <\/span><\/p>\n

(Mother’s
\nvoice becomes extremely deep.<\/i>) One must be very great, very pure, have a
\nvery high and very disinterested spiritual consciousness in order to be
\nsuccessful without being affected by it. Nothing
\nis more difficult than being successful. This, indeed, is the true test of
\nlife! <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

When you do not succeed, quite naturally
\nyou turn back on yourself and within yourself, and you seek within yourself the
\nconsolation for your outer failure. And to those who have a flame within them \u2013
\nif the Divine really wants to help them, if they are mature enough to be
\nhelped, if they are ready to follow the path \u2013 blows will come one after
\nanother, because this helps! It is the most powerful, the most direct, most
\neffective help. If you succeed, be on your guard, ask yourself: \u201cAt what price,
\nwhat cost have I bought success? I hope it is not a step towards…\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There are those who have gone beyond this,
\nthose who are conscious of their soul, those who have given themselves
\nentirely, those who \u2013 as I said \u2013 are absolutely pure, disinterested, and can
\nsucceed without its affecting and touching them; here, then, it is different. But one must be very high to be able to bear
\nsuc<\/i><\/span>cess.<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

And after all, it is perhaps the last
\ntest which the Divine gives to anyone: \u201cNow that you are noble, you are
\ndisinterested, you have no egoism, you belong only to me, I am going to make
\nyou triumph. We are going to see if you will hold out.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

In what way does the divine Shakti act against the Asuras? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t hear a thing!…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Acts against the Asuras? Why do you want to
\nknow that? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It is interesting! (Laughter)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps to them also She gives what they
\nwant to have…\u00a0 <\/span>(Silence)\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And usually this hastens their end. There are
\nAsuras and Asuras… that is to say… no, the Asuras are Asuras, but there are
\nall those who have come out of them, and who are beings of an inferior kind. <\/span><\/p>\n

An Asura is generally a conscious being
\nand he knows he has an end. He knows that the attitude he has taken up in the
\nuniverse is bound to destroy him after a certain time. Naturally, the time of
\nan Asura is extremely long if we compare it with the lifetime of man. But
\nstill, he knows there is an end, because he has cut himself off from Eternity.
\nAnd so he tries to realise his plan as totally as he can until the day of his
\ncomplete defeat. And it is possible that if he is allowed to do it, the defeat
\nwill come sooner. It is perhaps for this reason that at the time great things
\nare about to be accomplished \u2013 it is at this time that the adverse forces are
\nmost active, most violently active, and apparently the most fully successful.
\nThey seem to have a clear field: it is perhaps in order that things may be more
\nrapidly finished. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet Mother, what does \u201cmental arrogance\u201d mean? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My children, speak dis-tinct-ly! You don’t
\nneed to shout loudly…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>You must
\narticulate clearly! <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

(The child repeats the same sentence distinctly.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mental arrogance? That means… \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>what all of you have! (Laughter)\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t know a human being who does not
\nhave mental arrogance. There are those who have a little, there are those who
\nhave much, there are those who are entirely made up of it…\u00a0 <\/span>The mind, by its very nature, is something
\nessentially arrogant. It fancies that it can know, it imagines that it can
\njudge, and it spends its time passing judgments on everything \u2013 within you, on
\nyourself, on others, on all things! <\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, a very amusing incident
\nhappened. Someone wrote and began to express a doubt about something said by
\nSri Aurobindo. But then, afterwards, he added, \u201cBut we should not forget that
\nhe who wrote this is at least as intelligent as we!\u201d (Mother laughs.) When
\npeople spend their time judging things, if they tell themselves, \u201cBut perhaps
\nthe other person is at least as intelligent as I am!\u201d, they would be
\nless…\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But you have only to observe
\nyourselves…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>you can observe yourself,
\ncatch yourself at least a hundred times a day, with a mind which decides
\neverything, knows everything, judges everything, knows very well what is good,
\nwhat bad, what is true, what false, what is right…\u00a0 <\/span>And also how one should act, what this person
\nshould have done, how to resolve that problem…\u00a0 <\/span>All men know, you see…\u00a0 <\/span>If they were at the head of governments, for
\ninstance, they would know very well how to manage everything! But people don’t
\nlisten to them… that’s all! <\/span><\/p>\n

You have only to look at yourself, you
\nwill see, you will catch yourself all the time…\u00a0 <\/span>Not to speak of those who have long ago
\ndecided about all the errors God has committed and
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

how the world would be if it were they who
\nhad been commissioned to make it! There. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

With the touch of the divine Grace, how do difficulties become opportunities
\nfor progress? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Opportunities for progress? Yes! Well,
\nthis is something quite obvious. You have made a big mistake, you are in great
\ndifficulty: then, if you have faith, if you have trust in the divine Grace, if
\nyou really rely on It, you will suddenly realise that it is a lesson, that your
\ndifficulty or mistake is nothing else but a lesson and that it comes to teach
\nyou to find within yourself what needs to be changed, and with this help of the
\ndivine Grace you will discover in yourself what has to be changed. And you will
\nchange it. And so, from a difficulty you will have made great progress, taken a
\nconsiderable leap forward. This, indeed, happen all the time. Only, you must be
\ntruly sincere, that is, rely on the Grace and let It work in you \u2013 not like
\nthis: one part of you asking to be helped and another resisting as much as it
\ncan, because it doesn’t want to change…\u00a0
\n<\/span>this is the difficulty. <\/span><\/p>\n

All that he is saying, all the time, is:
\ncompletely, totally, sincerely, without reserve. For there is one part of the
\nbeing which has an aspiration, there is one part of the being which gives
\nitself, and there are other parts \u2013 sometimes a small part, some times a big
\none which hides nicely, right at the bottom, and keeps absolutely quiet so that
\nit may not be found out, but which resists<\/i>
\nwith all its might, so as not to change. <\/span><\/p>\n

And so one wonders… with, \u201cOh, I had
\nsuch a beautiful aspiration, I had so much goodwill, I had such a great desire
\nto change, and then, see, I cannot! Why?\u201d Then, of course, your mental
\narrogance comes in and says, \u201cI didn’t get the response I deserved, the divine
\nGrace doesn’t help me, and I am left all alone to shift for myself\u201d, etc., etc.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not that. It is that hidden
\nsomewhere there is a tiny something which is well coiled up, in there, doubled
\nup, turned
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

in upon itself and well hidden, right at
\nthe bottom, as at the bottom of a box, which refuses to stir. (Mother speaks
\nvery softly.) So when the effort, the aspiration wane, die down, this springs
\nup like that, gently, and then it wants to impose its will and it makes you do
\nexactly what you did not want to do, what you had decided you would not do, and
\nwhich you do without knowing how or why! Because that thing was there, it had
\nits turn \u2013 for small things, big things, for the details, even for the
\ndirection of life. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are people who see clearly, who know
\nso well what they ought to do, and who feel that they can’t…\u00a0 <\/span>They don’t know why. It is nothing else but
\nthat. There is a little spot which doesn’t want to change and this little spot
\nawaits its hour. And the day it is allowed, through laxity, fatigue,
\nsomnolence, through a little inertia, allowed to show itself, it will show
\nitself with all concentrated, accumulated energy, and will make you do, will
\nmake you say, make you feel, make you act ex-act-ly contrary to what you had
\ndecided to do! And you will stand there: \u201cAh, how discouraging this is!…\u201d
\nThen some people say, \u201cFate!\u201d They think it is their fate. It is not fate, it
\nis themselves!…\u00a0 <\/span>It is that they don’t
\nhave, haven’t used, the light, the searchlight. They have not turned the
\nsearchlight into the small hidden corners of their being, they haven’t
\ndiscovered what was well hidden. They have left it there, and then have done
\nthis (Mother turns away her head<\/i>) so
\nas not to see it. How many times one suddenly feels one is on the point of
\ncatching something, \u201cHup!\u201d It hurts a little…\u00a0
\n<\/span>It is troublesome…\u00a0 <\/span>So one
\nthinks of something else, and that’s all! The opportunity has gone. One must
\nwait for another occasion, again commit a few stupidities, before being able to
\nfind an opportunity to catch the thing by the tail, like this, or by the ear or
\nthe nose, and hold it firmly and say, \u201cNo! You won’t hide any longer now, I see
\nyou as you are, and you must either get out or change!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

One must have a strong grip and an
\nunshakable resolution. As in our Japanese story of the other day, that soldier
\nwho had
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

a knife in his knee in order to make sure
\nof not falling asleep…\u00a0 <\/span>and when he
\nfelt very sleepy, he turned the knife in such a way that it hurt him still
\nmore. One must have something like that. This, this is determination: to know
\nwhat one wants and to do it. There we are! <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother, may I ask something? <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Ask! <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother, last time I didn’t understand something… what you said about
\nthe time you used to count the \u201ctransformations\u201d flowers. The figure showed the
\nnumber people who would be transformed? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

(After a silence) That, well, that
\ndepended on the previous arrangement I had made, you see…\u00a0 <\/span>One day it could be one thing, another day it
\ncould be another. Sometimes it was only movements, elements, cells… Sometimes
\nit was people. It depended on what I saw as possible and the arrangement I had
\nmade before counting. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was as when I used to give people a
\ncertain number of flowers: at times it meant, \u201cAs many movements in you, as
\nmany elements of your being can be changed.\u201d At other times I used to give them
\na certain number of flowers, well: \u201cYou will have the power to change, to bring
\ntransformations to as many people as there are flowers\u201d \u2013 and all kinds of
\nthings like that. It was not always the same thing. But it was always a power
\nof transforming something…\u00a0 <\/span>It could be
\nthe transformations of the will, it could be the transformations of action, it
\ncould be the material transformations of the cells, it could be a
\ntransformation of yourself… the transformations of stars in the universe…
\nof many things… It depended on people. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

When it was for people was it a total transformations, Sweet Mother? <\/span><\/i>
\n
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes. Usually there were also
\nassociations with other flowers…\u00a0 <\/span>There
\nwere times when one could organise one thing more than another…\u00a0 <\/span>There were times… there was a time when I
\narranged flowers in this way…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>for
\nsome people it was a total transformations. But when…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The time factor sometimes eludes us, it is
\ndifficult… In organisations of this kind, the most difficult thing to control
\nis the time. One does not know if it will be in a year or in a hundred
\nyears…\u00a0 <\/span>It is difficult to control. I
\nnever had the opportunity to give the time-see to flowers, and probably it is
\nnot possible. Perhaps it will come, but for the moment it is an element difficult
\nto gauge. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet Mother, \u201ctransformations of stars\u201d means? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

What does it mean? What is your question?
\nI spoke of the transformations of stars…\u00a0
\n<\/span>If the whole universe is going to be transformed, the stars will be
\ntransformed also! Why do you suppose it will be only on earth? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

There were people here who had a great aspiration, but who for some
\nreason or other revolted and went away. And these are the ones who are
\nspecially against the Ashram. But then, could we say that one day they will
\ncome back? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Come back? (Mother makes a movement.) That
\nis… I shall tell you this personally. <\/span><\/p>\n

It depends on something…\u00a0 <\/span>We could put it like this: first \u2013 the very
\nsame question is in the Gita \u2013 there are two kinds of Asuric beings. There are
\nthose who can be converted and will be converted\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 after all, perhaps it would be enough if
\nonly at one moment, were it just in a passing flash, these beings have
\nconceived the possibility of conversion, for this to happen one day. And there
\nare those who have absolutely consciously and
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

wilfully decided that they would prefer to
\nbe dissolved and to disappear. So those who want to be dissolved will be
\ndissolved and those who want to be converted will be converted. That’s how it
\nis in life! <\/span><\/p>\n

There are those who die, those who return.
\nUsually it is something known, almost decided. One could say with certainty, these will die<\/i>. They will die, they will
\ndie, that is to say, they cut themselves off from their soul. They may have \u2013
\nas I said a while ago \u2013 a life that is quite… that seems to be altogether
\nsuccessful. They are not necessarily unhappy physically, far from it;
\nsometimes, on the contrary, everything turns out successfully for them. And
\nthen, on the other hand, there are perhaps others under a special grace, who,
\nin their adventure meet the worst rebuffs, and after some time they realise
\nthat they have been foolish, idiotic, stupid. And then… they come back. It
\ndepends on people. In fact, when they are successful it means that they are
\ncondemned; when they do not succeed, well, it is that the Grace has not left
\nthem. <\/span><\/p>\n

But mostly it will be after their death
\nthat there will be a difference, because those human beings who have allowed
\nadverse forces to take hold of them and govern their lives, as soon as they
\nleave their body, they are just swallowed up, that’s all! They have already cut
\noff the connection with their psychic being, so their psychic being often has
\ngone somewhere far off already in other worlds…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>and so, their vital being, which is the
\nreceptacle for these forces, as soon as it leaves the body will be quite simply
\nswallowed, and that’s all. And so they will really die for good. That won’t
\nmake much difference in the world. It won’t change things much. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet Mother, what will swallow them up? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

A still greater vital being!
\n(Laughter)\u00a0 <\/span>You see, they have in them an
\nemanation of adverse vital forces, and the being or power which has emanated
\nthis force has done so in order to
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

make use of the body, to make it do in the
\nmaterial life exactly the things it wanted to do. But now, when there is no
\nlonger a body left, it is no longer interesting…\u00a0 <\/span>You see, it was this body which was meant to
\ndo a certain number of things to act against the divine action. Once the body
\nhas disappeared, the emanation is withdrawn and all the force that was with it,
\nand it is swallowed up again for another opportunity. <\/span><\/p>\n

They spend their time doing this. They
\nemanate and then reabsorb when it pleases them, at times before death… that
\nis, this haste death a bit. It leaves the being like a kind of rag, powerless,
\nlifeless, without anything…\u00a0 <\/span>This
\nhappen; it makes them absolutely mad. Or else, when they die in some sort of
\ncatastrophe, as it happened during the war, suddenly… hup! It acts like a
\ncupping glass, it absorbs everything, swallows up everything again for another
\noccasion. It looks for this, for what is ready to receive it, and it makes
\nit…\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>There is always someone who is
\nopen to receive it, and who immediately believes himself a very superior being;
\nbecause it gives this, it gives people the feeling that they are truly,
\nexceptionally remarkable… they are capable of seeing the faults of things
\nwhich others don’t see; their judgment is more sane than that of hundreds of
\nother individuals. Besides, they have decided, they are among those who have
\ndecided what the creation ought to be like and who try to make it so, to put
\nthings in their place as they ought to be. <\/span><\/p>\n

I had these… people who, in a moment of
\nlucidity or sincerity, a second of sincerity, had asked to be freed from the
\nhostile emanation which made them act. And then, in that moment of sincerity
\nthis emanation went out of them, and without hurting the body it could be
\ncaught and destroyed. That has happened several times. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then for some days the being is so happy…
\nand it feels free, feels good, feels luminous…\u00a0 <\/span>And then suddenly, it tells itself, \u201cBut I no
\nlonger have any power! I don’t know any longer, can’t do anything any longer, I
\nam altogether an ordinary being!\u201d And then, \u201cBut this is not at all good, it
\nwas much better be- <\/span><\/p>\n

fore!\u201d And so, as these adverse forces are
\ncountless \u2013 these entities exist in thousands and thousands, you see, they are
\nthere swarming around people, only waiting for an opportunity to be able to
\nrush into someone \u2013 immediately one reabsorbs one’s dose and becomes once again
\nwhat one was before, sometimes worse. And so the comedy begins all over again. <\/span><\/p>\n

But as for me, nothing doing, once is enough!<\/span><\/i> You are far too attached to it! Keep your
\nlittle hostile being with you! It is useless, in this case. But it is this,
\nit’s the feeling, all of a sudden, of having lost one’s power. But note, this
\nhappen to ambitious people, above all to ambitious people who want to have
\npower, want to dominate others, want to be great masters, great instructors,
\nwant to perform miracles, have extraordinary powers… it is to these that this
\nhappen most often… those who have a kind of ambition, here, turning in their
\nmind. This is dangerous. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is so good to be simple, simply
\ngood-willed, to do the best one can, and in the best way possible; not to build
\nanything very considerable but only to aspire for progress, for light, a peace
\nfull of goodwill, and let That which knows in the world decide for you what you
\nwill become, and what you will have to do. One no longer has any cares, and one
\nis perfectly happy<\/i>! <\/span><\/p>\n
