Last week I spoke to you about
\nbirth: how souls enter a body; and I told you that the body is formed in a very
\nunsatisfactory way for almost everyone <\/span>―<\/span>exceptions are so rare that one
\ncan hardly speak of them. <\/span><\/p>\n

 I told you that due to this
\nobscure birth one arrives with a whole physical baggage of things which
\ngenerally have to be got rid of, if one truly wants to progress, and someone
\nhas quoted my own sentence which runs like this: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou are brought here by force,
\nthe environment is imposed on you by force, the laws of atavism of the milieu
\nby force\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>    \u00a0<\/span>And now the person who wrote to me has asked
\nme who does all that. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Of course I could have
\nbeen more explicit, but I thought I had been clear enough. <\/span><\/p>\n

 The body is formed by a
\nman and a woman who become the father and mother, and it is they who don\u2019t even
\nhave the means of asking the being they are going to bring into the world
\nwhether it would like to come or whether this is in accordance with its
\ndestiny. And it is on this body they have formed that they impose by force, by
\nforce of necessity, an atavism, an environment, later an education, which will
\nalmost always be obstacles to its future growth. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Therefore, I said here
\nand I am repeating <\/span>―<\/span> it I thought I had been clear enough <\/span>―<\/span> that it was about the physical
\nparents and the physical body I was speaking, nothing else. And that the soul
\nwhich incarnates, whether it be in course of development or fully developed,
\nhas to struggle against the circumstances imposed on it by this animal birth,
\nstruggle in order to find its true path and again discover its own self fully.
\nThat\u2019s all.<\/span><\/p>\n

 Now, if you have
\nsomething else to ask\u2026. Nobody has anything to say? <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet Mother, is it possible
\nfor the mother and father to give birth to\u2026 to ask for the soul they want? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

To ask? For that they must have an occult knowledge which they
\ndon\u2019t usually have. But anyway, what is possible is that instead of doing the
\nthing like an animal driven by instinct or desire and most of the time, without
\neven wanting it, they do it at will, with an aspiration, putting themselves in
\na state of aspiration and almost of prayer, so that the being they are going to
\nform may be one fit to embody a soul which they can call down to incarnate in
\nthat form. I knew people <\/span>―<\/span> not many, this does not often happen, but still I knew some <\/span>―<\/span> who chose special
\ncircumstances, prepared themselves through special concentration and meditation
\nand aspiration and sought to bring down, into the body they were going to form,
\nan exceptional being.<\/span><\/p>\n

 In many countries of old <\/span>―<\/span> and even now in certain
\ncountries <\/span>―<\/span> the woman who was going to have a child was placed in special
\nconditions of beauty, harmony, peace and well-being, in very harmonious
\nphysical conditions, so that the child could be formed in the best possible
\nconditions. This is obviously what ought to be done, for it is within the reach
\nof human possibilities. Human beings are developed enough for this not to be
\nsomething quite exceptional. And yet it is quite exceptional, for very few
\npeople think of it, while there are innumerable<\/i><\/span> people who have children
\nwithout even wanting to. <\/span><\/p>\n

 That was what I wanted to
\nsay. <\/span><\/p>\n

 It is possible to call a
\nsoul, but one must be at least a little conscious oneself, and must want to do
\nwhat one does in the best conditions. This is very rare, but it is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother, when a body is formed,
\nis the soul which incarnates in it compelled to incarnate in that body? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t understand your question very well. <\/span><\/p>\n

The formation of the body
\ndepends entirely on a man and a woman, but is the soul which manifests in the
\nchild, in the body which is being formed, compelled to manifest in this body? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

You mean whether it can choose between different bodies? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Yes. <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Well, it is very exceptional, after all, in the great mass of
\nhumanity, that a conscious soul incarnates voluntarily. It is something very
\nunusual. I have already told you that when a soul is conscious, fully formed,
\nand wants to incarnate, usually from its psychic plane it looks for a
\ncorresponding psychic light at a certain place upon earth. Besides, during its
\nprevious incarnation, before going away, before leaving the earth-atmosphere,
\nusually as a result of the experience it had in the life that is coming to an
\nend, the soul chooses more or less <\/span>― <\/span>not in all details but broadly <\/span>― <\/span>the conditions of its future
\nlife. But these are exceptional cases. Possibly we could speak of it for
\nourselves here, but for the majority, the vast majority of men, even those who
\nare educated, it is out of the question. And what comes then is a psychic being
\nin formation, more or less formed, and there are all the stages of formation
\nfrom the spark which becomes a little light to the fully formed being, and this
\nextends over thousands of years. This ascent of the soul to become a conscious
\nbeing having its own will, capable of determining the choice of its own life,
\ntakes thousands of years. <\/span><\/p>\n

 So, you are thinking of a
\nsoul which would say, \u201cNo, I refuse this body, I am going to look for
\nanother\u201d?… I don\u2019t say it is impossible <\/span>― <\/span>everything is possible. It does
\nhappen, in fact, that children are still-born, which means that there was no
\nsoul to incarnate in them. But it may be for other reasons also; it may be for
\nreasons of malformation only; one can\u2019t say. I don\u2019t say it is impossible, but
\ngenerally, when a conscious and free <\/span><\/p>\n

\nsoul chooses to take a
\nbody on earth again, even before its birth it works on this body. So it has no
\nreason not to accept even the inconveniences which may result from the
\nignorance of the parents; for it has chosen the place for a reason which was
\nnot one of ignorance: it saw a light there <\/span>―<\/span> it might have been simply the
\nlight of a possibility, but there was a light and that is why it has come
\nthere. So, it is all very well to say, \u201cAh! no, I don\u2019t like it\u201d, but where
\nwould it go to choose another it likes? That may happen, I don\u2019t say it is
\nimpossible, but it cannot happen very often. For, when from the psychic plane
\nthe soul looks at the earth and chooses the place for its next birth, it
\nchooses it with sufficient discernment not to be altogether grossly mistaken. <\/span><\/p>\n

 It has also happened that
\nsouls have incarnated and then left. There are many reasons why they go away.
\nChildren who die very young, after a few days or a few weeks <\/span>―<\/span> this may be for a similar
\nreason. Most often it is said that the soul needed just a little experience to
\ncomplete its formation, that it had it during these few weeks and then left.
\nEverything is possible. And as many stories would be needed to tell the story
\nof souls as are needed to tell the story of men. That is to say, they are
\ninnumerable and the instances are as different as possible from one another. <\/span><\/p>\n

 So, to decide
\narbitrarily: \u201cIt is like that, not like this; this is what happens and not
\nthat\u201d, this is childishness.\u00a0 <\/span>Everything
\ncan happen. There are instances which occur more frequently than others, one
\ncan generalise, but one can never say, \u201cThis is not possible and it is always
\nlike this or always like that.\u201d That is not how things happen. <\/span><\/p>\n

 But anyway <\/span>―<\/span> anyway ― even in the
\nbest cases, even when the soul has come consciously, even when it has
\nconsciously participated in the formation of the physical body, still so long
\nas the body is formed in the usual animal way, it will have to struggle and
\ncorrect all those things which come from this human animality. <\/span><\/p>\n

Inevitably, parents have a
\nparticular formation, they are particularly healthy or unhealthy; even taking things
\nat their best, they have a heap of atavisms, habits, formations in the
\nsubconscious and even in the unconscious, which come from their own birth, the
\nenvironment they have lived in, their own life; and even if they are remarkable
\npeople, they have a large number of things which are quite opposed to the true
\npsychic life <\/span>― <\/span>even the best of them, even the most conscious. And besides,
\nthere is all that is going to happen. Even if one takes a great deal of trouble
\nover the education of one\u2019s children, they will come in contact with all sorts
\nof people who will have an influence over them, especially when they are very
\nyoung, and these influences enter the subconscious, one has to struggle against
\nthem later on. I say: even in the best cases, because of the way in which the
\nbody is formed at present, you have to face innumerable difficulties which come
\nmore or less from the subconscious, but rise to the surface and against which
\nyou have to struggle before you can become completely free and develop normally.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

 Is that all?

Now, since the end of February,
\nI have received a considerable number of questions on: <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

How is the Supermind going to
\nact? What should be done to receive it? In what form will it manifest?…<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

I have answered as best I could. But it so happens that in Sri
\nAurobindo\u2019s book On the Veda<\/i><\/span> there is a note on a certain page, and in this note
\nhe answers these questions. I always tell people: if you were to take a little
\ntrouble to read what Sri Aurobindo has written, many of your questions would
\nbecome useless, for Sri Aurobindo has already answered them. However, <\/span><\/p>\n

\npeople probably have
\nneither the time nor the patience nor the will, nor all that is needed, and
\nthey don\u2019t read. The books are published, they are even, I believe, generously
\ndistributed, but few read them. Anyway, here is Sri Aurobindo\u2019s answer. Try to
\nthink, and if you have a special question to ask I shall answer it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe supramental world has to be formed or
\ncreated in us by the Divine Will as the result of a constant expansion and
\nself-perfecting.\u201d\u00b9 <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is to say, to hope to receive, use and form in oneself a
\nsupramental being, and consequently a supramental world, there must first of
\nall be an expansion of consciousness and a constant personal progress: not to
\nhave sudden flights, a little aspiration, a little effort, and then fall back
\ninto somnolence. This must be the constant idea of the being, the constant will
\nof the being, the constant effort of the being, the constant preoccupation of
\nthe being. <\/span><\/p>\n

 If for five minutes in
\nthe day you happen to remember that there is something in the universe like the
\nsupramental Force, and that, after all, \u201cit would be nice if it manifested in
\nme\u201d, and then all the rest of the time you are thinking of something else and
\nare busy with other things, there is not much chance that it would come and do
\nany serious work in you. Sri Aurobindo says this quite clearly and precisely.
\nHe does not tell you that you will do it, he says it is the Divine Will. So don\u2019t
\ncome and<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\nsay, \u201cAh! I can\u2019t.\u201d No
\none is asking you to do it. But there must be<\/i><\/span> enough aspiration and
\nadhesion in the being to make the expansion of the being, the expansion of
\nconsciousness possible. For, to tell the truth, everybody is small, small, small,
\nso small that there is not enough room to put any supramental in! It is so
\nsmall that it is already quite filled up with all the ordinary little human
\nmovements. There must be a great widening to make room for the movements of the
\nSupermind. <\/span><\/p>\n

 And then there must also
\nbe an aspiration for progress: not to be satisfied with what one is, how one
\nis, what one does, what one knows or thinks one knows; but to have a constant
\naspiration for something more, something better, for a greater light, a vaster
\nconsciousness, a truer truth and a more universal goodness. And over and above
\nall this, a goodwill which never fails. <\/span><\/p>\n

 That can\u2019t be done in a
\nfew days. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Moreover, I believe that
\nI had taken my precautions in this matter and that, when I announced that it had
\nbeen granted to the earth to receive the supramental Force in order to manifest
\nit, this did not mean that the manifestation would be instantaneously apparent,
\nand that everybody would suddenly find himself transported to a peak of light
\nand of possibilities and realisation, without any effort. I said immediately
\nthat it would not be like that. I even said that it would take quite a long
\ntime. But still, people have complained that its advent has not made things
\neasier, and that even, in some cases, they have become more difficult. I am
\nvery sorry, but I can do nothing about it. For it is not the fault of the
\nsupramental Force, the fault lies in the way in which it was received. I know
\ninstances in which truly the aspiration was sincere and the collaboration
\ncomplete, and in which many things that had seemed very difficult in the past
\nat once became infinitely easier. <\/span><\/p>\n

 However, there is a very
\ngreat difference, always, between a kind of mental curiosity which plays with
\nwords and ideas, and a true aspiration of the being which means that truly,
\nreally, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>it is\u00a0 <\/span>that which counts, essentially, and nothing
\nelse <\/span>―<\/span> that aspiration, that inner will because of which nothing has

\ncounts except that; there is no other reason for existence, for living,
\nthan\u00a0 <\/span>

 And yet it is this that\u2019s
\nneeded if one wants the Supramental to bee visible to the naked eye. <\/span><\/p>\n

 And mark that I am not
\nspeaking of a physical transformation, for this everyone knows: you don\u2019t
\nexpect to become luminous and plastic overnight, to lose your weight, be able
\nto displace yourself freely, appear in a dozen places at the same time and what
\nnot\u2026 No, I believe you are reasonable enough not to expect this to happen right
\naway. It will take some time. <\/span><\/p>\n

 But still, simply, the
\nworking of the consciousness, simply a certain self-mastery, a control over
\none\u2019s body, a direct knowledge of things, a capacity of identification and a
\nclear vision <\/span>―<\/span> instead of that hazy and vague sight which sees only the mere
\nappearances that are so deceptive, so unreal, so fossilised <\/span>―<\/span> a more direct perception, an
\ninner perception, this ought to be able to come and come quickly if one has
\nprepared oneself. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Simply to have that
\nfeeling that the air one breathes is more living, the strength one has more
\nlasting. And instead of always groping like a blind man to know what should be
\ndone, to have a clear, precise, inner intimation: it is this <\/span>―<\/span> not that:\u00a0 <\/span>this<\/span><\/p>\n

 These are things one can
\nacquire immediately if one is ready.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Today I received some other questions which have nothing to do
\nwith the subject before us at present, questions as old as the earth, which I
\nhave already answered hundreds of times; but still, it seems that it couldn\u2019t
\nhave gone in, for again I am asked: <\/span><\/p>\n

Why do bad thoughts come?<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Haven\u2019t I told you why bad thoughts come?… For as many reasons<\/span><\/p>\n

as there are bad thoughts! Each one comes for its own special
\nreason: it may be through affinity, it may be just to tease you, it may be
\nbecause you call them, it may be because you expose yourself to attacks, it may
\nbe all this at once and many more things besides. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Bad thoughts come because
\nthere is something corresponding somewhere within you; otherwise you might see
\nsomething sing like that, but they would not come inside you. I suppose the
\nquestion means: why do you suddenly think something bad? <\/span><\/p>\n

 Because the stages are
\nvery different. I have already explained to you that the mental atmosphere is
\nworse than any public place when a crowd is there: innumerable ideas, thoughts
\nof all kinds and all forms criss-cross in such a complicated tangle that it is
\nimpossible to make out anything precise. Your head is in the midst of it, and
\nyour mind even more so: it bathes in it as one bathes in the sea. And all this
\ncomes and goes, comes, turns, collides, enters, goes out. If you were conscious
\nof the mental atmosphere in which you live, obviously it would be a little
\nmaddening! I think personal cerebral limits are quite necessary as a filter,
\nfor a very long time in life. <\/span><\/p>\n

 To be able to get out of
\nall that and live fully in the mental atmosphere as it is, seeing it as it is <\/span>―<\/span> it is the same for the vital
\natmosphere, by the way; that is perhaps yet uglier!<\/span>―<\/span> <\/span>to live in it and see it as it is, one must
\nbe strong, one must have a very steady sense of inner direction. But in any
\ncase, whether you see it or not, whether you feel it or not, it is a fact, it
\nis like that. So one cannot ask where bad thoughts come from <\/span>―<\/span> they are everywhere. Why do
\nthey come? <\/span>―<\/span> where would they go? You are right in the midst of them! <\/span><\/p>\n

 What governs this filter
\nof consciousness which makes you conscious of certain thoughts and not
\nconscious of others, is your inner attitude, your inner affinities, your inner
\nhabits <\/span>―<\/span> I am speaking of the mind, not of the psychic <\/span>―<\/span> it is your education, your
\ncerebral development, etc. That is a kind of filter <\/span><\/p>\n

\nformed by your ego, and
\ncertain thoughts pass through it and others don\u2019t <\/span>― <\/span>automatically. That is why the
\nnature of the thoughts you receive may be quite an important indication for you
\nof the kind of character you have <\/span>― <\/span>it may be quite subconscious for you, for a man is not in the
\nhabit of really knowing himself, but it is an indication of the general
\ntendency of your character. To put things in a very simplified way, if you take
\nan optimist, for instance, well, in general, optimistic ideas will come to him;
\nfor a pessimist they will generally be pessimistic ideas <\/span>―<\/span> I am speaking very broadly <\/span>― <\/span>for a person with a rebellious
\nnature, they will be rebellious ideas; and for a very sheepish person, they
\nwill be sheepish ideas! Granting that sheep have ideas! That is the usual
\nnormal condition. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Now, if it so happens
\nthat you have decided to progress and if you enter the path of yoga, then a new
\nfactor intervenes. As soon as you want to progress, you immediately meet the
\nresistance of everything that does not want to progress both in you and around
\nyou. And this resistance naturally expresses itself in all the thoughts that
\ncorrespond to it. <\/span><\/p>\n

 Suppose that you want to
\nmake a progress regarding attachment to food, for example; well, almost
\nconstantly there will come to you thoughts particularly interested in food,
\nabout what should be taken, what should not be taken, how it should be taken,
\nhow it should not be taken; and these ideas will come to you, they will seem
\nquite natural to you. And the more you say within yourself, \u201cOh! how I would
\nlike to be free from all that, what a hindrance to my progress are all these
\npreoccupations\u201d, the more will they come, quietly, until the progress is truly
\nmade within and you have risen to a level of consciousness where you can see
\nall these things from above and put them\u00a0
\n<\/span>in their place ― which is not a very big place in the universe!
\nAnd so on, for all things. Therefore, your occupations and affinities are going
\nto put you almost contradictorily into contact not only with ideas having an
\naffinity and relation with your way of being, but with the opposite. And if you
\ndon\u2019t take care from <\/span><\/p>\n

\nthe beginning to keep an
\nattitude of discernment, you will be turned into a mental battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n

 If you know how to rise
\nto a higher level, simply into a region of the speculative mind which is not
\nquite the ordinary physical mind, you can see all this play and all this
\nstruggle, all this conflict, all these contradictions as a curiosity which does
\nnot touch or affect you. If you rise a step higher still and see the goal
\ntowards which you want to go, you will gradually come to discern between ideas
\nfavourable to your progress which you will keep, and ideas opposed to this
\nprogress which harm and impair it; and from above you will have the power to
\nset them aside, calmly, without being otherwise affected by them. But if you
\nremain there, at that level in the midst of that confusion and conflict, well,
\nyou risk getting a headache! <\/span><\/p>\n

 The best thing to do is
\nto occupy yourself with something practical which will compel you to
\nconcentrate specially: studies, work or some physical occupation for the body
\nwhich demands attention <\/span>―<\/span> anything at all that forces you to concentrate on what you are
\ndoing and no longer be a prey to these ramblings. But if you have the
\nmisfortune to remain there and look at them, then surely, as I said, you will
\nget a headache. For it is a problem which must be resolved either by a descent
\ninto practical life and a concentration on some practical effort or else by
\nrising above and looking from above at all this chaos so as to be able to bring
\nsome order into it and set it right. <\/span><\/p>\n

 But one must never remain
\non the same plane, it is a plane which is no good either for physical or moral
\nhealth. <\/span><\/p>\n
