It<br \/>\nspreads out, feeling the body only as a small part of itself, and begins to<br \/>\ncontain what before contained it; it achieves the cosmic consciousness and<br \/>\nextends itself to be <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>com<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>mensurate with the<br \/>\nuniverse. It begins to know inwardly and directly and not merely by external<br \/>\nobservation and contact the forces at play in the world, feels their movement,<br \/>\ndistinguishes their functioning and can operate immediately upon them as the<br \/>\nscientist operates upon physical forces, accept their action and results in our<br \/>\nmind, life, body or reject them or modify, change, reshape, create immense new<br \/>\npowers and movements in place of the old small functionings of the nature. We<br \/>\nbegin to perceive the working of the forces of universal Mind and to know how<br \/>\nour thoughts are created by that working\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">The<br \/>\nSynthesis of Yoga, pp. 172-73<\/font><\/span><\/i><font size=\"2\"><\/b><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sweet Mother, how are our thoughts created by the forces of the<br \/>\nuniversal Mind? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Because the<br \/>\nforces of the universal Mind enter into our heads. We are bathed in forces, we<br \/>\nare not aware of it. We are not something enclosed in a bag and independent<br \/>\nfrom the rest: all forces, all vibrations, all movements enter into us and s<br \/>\nthrough us. And so we have a certain mental force held in, that&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 344<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>is to say, ready to be used by the formative<br \/>\nor creative mental power. These are, as it were, free forces. As soon as a<br \/>\nthought <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>com<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>ing from outside or a force or movement enters our consciousness,<br \/>\nwe give it a concrete form, a logical appearance and all kinds of precise<br \/>\ndetails; but in fact all this belongs to a domain one is rarely conscious of. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>But this is not a special instance which occurs only from time to<br \/>\ntime: it is something constant. If a current of force is sing, with a<br \/>\nparticular thought formation, one sees it sing from one into another, and in<br \/>\neach one it forms a kind of centre of light or force which keeps the imprint<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>more or less pure, more or less clear, more or less mixed<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>of the initial current; and the result is what we call \u201cour\u201d<br \/>\nthought. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>But our thought is something which hardly exists. It can be \u201cour\u201d<br \/>\nthought only if, instead of being like a public place as we generally are in<br \/>\nour normal state<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>we are like a public place and all the<br \/>\nforces pass there, come and go, enter, depart, jostle each other and even<br \/>\nquarrel<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'><br \/>\n\u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>if instead of being like that, we are a<br \/>\nconcentrated consciousness, turned upwards in an aspiration, and open beyond<br \/>\nthe limits of the human mind to something higher; then, being open like this<br \/>\nbrings down that higher something across all the layers of reality, and this<br \/>\nsomething may enter into contact with our conscious brain and take a form there<br \/>\nwhich is no longer the creation of a universal force or a personal mind<br \/>\nstronger than ours, but the<span>\u00a0 <\/span>direct<br \/>\nexpression and creation of a light which is above us, and which may be a light<br \/>\nof the highest kind if our aspiration and opening allow it. That is the only<br \/>\ncase in which one can say that the thought is our own. Otherwise, all the rest<br \/>\nis simply a sing notation: we note down, we invest a force with words, a force<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s altogether universal and collective, which enters, goes out, moves and <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>pas<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>ses freely from one person to another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>But how is the thought formed in the universal Mind?<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 345<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In the<br \/>\nuniversal Mind? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>You say that it comes from outside, don&#8217;t you? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><b><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Ideas have a<br \/>\nhigher origin than the mind. There is a region of the mind, higher than the<br \/>\nordinary mind, in which there are ideas, typal ideas, really prototypes; and<br \/>\nthese ideas descend and are clothed in mental substance. So, in accordance with<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>how to put it?&#8230; the quality of the receiver, they either keep<br \/>\nall their own qualities and original nature or become distorted, coloured,<br \/>\ntransformed in the individual consciousness. But the idea goes far beyond the<br \/>\nmind; the idea has an origin much higher than the mind. So, the functioning is<br \/>\nthe same from both the universal and the individual point of view; the<br \/>\nindividual movement is only representative of the universal one. The scale is<br \/>\ndifferent, but the phenomenon is the same. Of course, these are no longer<br \/>\n\u201cthoughts\u201d as we conceive thoughts; they are universal principles<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>but it&#8217;s the same thing<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>universal<br \/>\nprinciples on which the universes are built. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The universe, after all, is only one person, only one<br \/>\nindividuality in the midst of the eternal Creation. Each universe is a person<br \/>\nwho takes form, lives, dissolves, and another takes shape<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>it is the same thing.
