Is that<br \/>\nit? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>First, the best way is to ask oneself why one values others&#8217;<br \/>\napproval. For what particular reason, because there are many reasons\u2026<\/span><span>.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>If<br \/>\nyou have a career and your career depends on the good opinion others have of<br \/>\nyou, then that&#8217;s a utilitarian reason. If you have a little, or much, vanity<br \/>\nand like <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>com<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>pliments, that&#8217;s another reason. If you attach great value to<br \/>\nothers&#8217; opinion of you because you feel they are wiser or more enlightened or<br \/>\nhave more knowledge, that&#8217;s yet another reason. There are many others still,<br \/>\nbut these are the three chief reasons: utility, vanity<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>usually this is the strongest<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>and<br \/>\nprogress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Naturally, when it is a reason of progress, the attitude is not<br \/>\nquite the same, for instead of trying to make a good impression, one must first<br \/>\nendeavour to know the impression one is actually making, in all humility, in<br \/>\norder to profit by the lesson this gives. That is quite rare, and in fact, if<br \/>\none isn&#8217;t too na<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>\u00ef<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>ve, one usually attaches importance only to the opinion of those<br \/>\nwho have more<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 348<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>experience,<br \/>\nmore knowledge and more wisdom than oneself. And so that leads us straight to<br \/>\none of the best methods of cure. It is precisely to come to understand that the<br \/>\nopinion of those who are as ignorant and blind as ourselves cannot have a very<br \/>\ngreat value for us from the point of view of the deeper reality and the will to<br \/>\nprogress, and so one stops attaching much importance to that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Finally, if one is sincere one desires no other approval except<br \/>\nthat of one&#8217;s teacher or one&#8217;s guru or of the Divine Himself. And that&#8217;s the<br \/>\nfirst step towards a total cure of this little weakness of wishing to make a<br \/>\ngood impression on people. Now, if the movement comes from a motive of utility,<br \/>\nthe one I spoke of first, the question does not arise here, for here we do not<br \/>\ndepend upon the opinion others have of us, either for living or for our<br \/>\ndevelopment. So there remains the most frequent instance, the one most<br \/>\ndifficult to cure: that kind of small, very foolish vanity which makes you like<br \/>\nto be <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>com<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>plimented and dislike being criticised. So the best way is to look<br \/>\nat yourself, to see how very ridiculous you are, how petty, paltry, stupid and<br \/>\nall that, to laugh a little at yourself and resolve to do without the <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>com<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>pliments of others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>That is all I have to offer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is obvious that if it is a matter of yoga, of yogic discipline,<br \/>\nan indispensable preliminary condition is to free oneself from this little<br \/>\nstupidity of wanting to be appreciated by others. That is not the first step on<br \/>\nthe path, it is one of the first steps in the preparation for being able to<br \/>\nenter on the path. For so long as one needs to be appreciated and <\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>com<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>plimented, one is a slavish being and a deplorable weakling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Indeed, it is better not to care at all about what others think of<br \/>\nyou, whether it is good or bad. But in any case, before reaching this stage, it<br \/>\nwould be less ridiculous to try to find out the impression you make on others<br \/>\nsimply by taking them as a mirror in which you see your reflection more exactly<br \/>\nthan in your own consciousness which is always over-indulgent to all your<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 349<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>weakness, blindness, passions, ignorance. There is always quite a<br \/>\ncharming and pleasant mental explanation to give you a good impression of<br \/>\nyourself. But to conclude, when you have the chance of getting information<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s a little more trustworthy and reliable about the condition you are in,<br \/>\nit is better not to ask the opinion of others, but only to refer all to the<br \/>\nvision of the guru. If you really want to progress, this is the surest path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>There we are. Is that all? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Mother, I had a question. The control of one&#8217;s own movements and<br \/>\nthe control of the vast life around oneself<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> \u2014 <\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>are these<br \/>\ninterdependent or independent? <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Self-control<br \/>\nand the control of what surrounds you?&#8230; That depends on your standpoint.
