I don\u2019t Understand <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>All this, not only physical necessities. All these things are at<br \/>\ntimes lights, that is to say, knowledge diminished and mixed with ignorance, at<br \/>\ntimes false lights, that is, no knowledge at all: simply ideas, conceptions,<br \/>\nways of seeing, ways of feeling <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> all these things considered as knowledge by the ordinary human<br \/>\nconsciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;Sri Aurobindo speaks even<br \/>\nof physical needs, the needs of the body, which are generally considered as<br \/>\nimperative and which have their own truth; he says that even that can be only<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 140<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>quite a partial light, that is to say, a semblance of knowledge<br \/>\nor even something false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;That goes against all<br \/>\nmodern ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;People always have the<br \/>\nimpression that what they call the needs of the body, what the body demands, is<br \/>\nan absolute law; that if it is not obeyed, well, one commits a great wrong<br \/>\nagainst one\u2019s body which will suffer the consequences. And Sri Aurobindo says<br \/>\nthat these needs in themselves are either very partial lights, that is to say,<br \/>\nonly a way of seeing things, or even no lights at all <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> completely false. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;If one were to study the<br \/>\nproblem attentively enough, one would find out to what an extent these<br \/>\nso-called needs of the body depend on the mental attitude. For example, the<br \/>\nneed to eat. There are people who literally die of hunger if they have not<br \/>\neaten for eight days. There are others who do it deliberately and observe<br \/>\nfasting as a principle of yoga, as a necessity in yoga. And for them, at the<br \/>\nend of eight days\u2019 fasting, the body is as healthy as when they started, and<br \/>\nsometimes healthier! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;Finally, for all these<br \/>\nthings, it is a question of proportion, of measure. It is obvious that one<br \/>\ncan\u2019t always live without eating. But it is as obvious that the idea people<br \/>\nhave about the need to eat is not true. Indeed, it is a whole subject for<br \/>\nstudy: The importance of the mental attitude in relation to the body. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;Sri Aurobindo does not<br \/>\nrecognise the needs of the body as things true in themselves. He says: it is<br \/>\nnot true, it is only an idea you have, an impression, it is not something true<br \/>\nwhich carries its truth in itself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sweet Mother, what is this<br \/>\n\u201cimperious law\u201d, this \u201cspiritual and supramental law\u201d? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><b><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>It is the truth of each being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;Each being carries in<br \/>\nhimself his own spiritual law, his supramental law. It is not the same for<br \/>\neveryone, it is not one single identical law. For each one it is the truth of<br \/>\nhis being,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 141<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Courier New\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>that is to say,<span>\u00a0 <\/span>the thing he must realise in the universe<br \/>\nand<span>\u00a0 <\/span>the place he must occupy in the<br \/>\nworld. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;That is the truth of his<br \/>\nbeing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cInadequate too is the very frequent attempt<br \/>\nat a misalliance between the vital and the spiritual, a mystic experience<br \/>\nwithin with an aestheticised intellectual and sensuous Paganism or exalted<br \/>\nhedonism outside leaning upon it and satisfying itself in the glow of a<br \/>\nspiritual sanction.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style='margin:0;text-align:right;line-height:150%'>\n<span><i><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">The<br \/>\nSynthesis of Yoga, A. 128 <\/font> <\/span><\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<b><i><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>What does Sri Aurobindo mean by<br \/>\n\u201can aestheticised Paganism\u201d? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>That is how Sri Aurobindo describes the different pantheons of<br \/>\ndifferent countries, specially of Greece or India. That is to say, it is an<br \/>\naesthetic and intellectual way of transforming all things into divine<br \/>\ncreatures, divine beings: all the forces of Nature, all the elements, all<br \/>\nspiritual forces, all intellectual forces, all physical forces, all these are<br \/>\ntransformed into a number of godheads and they are given an aesthetic and<br \/>\nintellectual reality. It is a symbolic and artistic and literary and poetic way<br \/>\nof dealing with all the universal forces and realities. That is how these<br \/>\npantheons came into existence, like the Greek or Egyptian pantheon or else the<br \/>\npantheon of India. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;All these gods are<br \/>\nrepresentations which Sri Aurobindo calls \u201caesthetic and intellectual\u201d <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> a way of conceiving the<br \/>\nuniverse. This is not to say that they do not correspond to a truth <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> to a reality rather than a<br \/>\ntruth. There are beings like that; but this is a particular way of approaching<br \/>\nthe universal world or rather the universal worlds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sweet Mother, hasn\u2019t morality<br \/>\nhelped us to increase our consciousness?<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 142<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Courier New\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>That depends on people. There are people who are helped by it,<br \/>\nthere are people who are not helped<span>\u00a0 <\/span>at<br \/>\nall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;Morality is something<br \/>\naltogether artificial and arbitrary, and in most cases, among the best, it<br \/>\nchecks the true spiritual effort by a sort of moral satisfaction that one is on<br \/>\nthe right path and a true gentleman, that one does one\u2019s duty, fulfils all the<br \/>\nmoral requirements of life. Then one is so self-satisfied that one no longer<br \/>\nmoves or makes any progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;It is very difficult for<br \/>\na virtuous man to enter the path of God; this has been said very often, but it<br \/>\nis altogether true, for he is most self-satisfied, he thinks he has realised what<br \/>\nhe ought to have realised, he no longer has either the aspiration or even that<br \/>\nelementary humility which makes one want to progress. You see, one who is known<br \/>\nhere as a sattwic man\u00b9 is usually very comfortably settled in his own virtue<br \/>\nand never thinks of coming out of it. So, that puts you a million leagues away<br \/>\nfrom the divine realisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;What really helps, until<br \/>\none has found the inner light, is to make for oneself a certain number of rules<br \/>\nwhich naturally should not be too rigid and fixed, but yet should be precise<br \/>\nenough to prevent one from going completely out of the right path or making<br \/>\nirreparable mistakes <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> mistakes the consequences of which one suffers all one\u2019s life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;To do that, it is good to<br \/>\nset up a certain number of principles in oneself, which, however, should be for<br \/>\neach one, in conformity with his own nature. If you adopt a social, collective<br \/>\nrule, you immediately make yourself a slave to this social rule, and that<br \/>\nprevents you almost radically from making any effort for transformation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Sweet Mother, Sri Aurobindo has<br \/>\nsaid that one must find a light within, then surrender to the divine Shakti. <\/span><\/i><\/b><br \/>\n<span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">\u00b9<\/font><\/span><span><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">According<br \/>\nto the Indian terminology, a sattwic person is one who is moved by the<br \/>\nprinciple of knowledge, equanimity and light, as opposed to a rajasic man who<br \/>\nis moved by his desires and compassions and a tamasic man who lives in inertia<br \/>\nand obscurity.<\/font><\/span><\/span><span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><font size=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%'>\n<span style='font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Page &#8211; 143<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Courier New\";color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Now that the Supermind has come<br \/>\ndown, will this be easier? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Well, that is the light within, now. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;What is the difficulty? Where<br \/>\ndo you see any objection or contradiction? What is your difficulty? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>How can we understand that it<br \/>\nhas become easier? What is the effect of this descent? <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><b><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Well, wait until it occurs in you and you will know it! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;All right. Imagine that<br \/>\nin a dark room you have put an oil lamp, one which burns oil, as we used to<br \/>\nhave fifty years ago <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> we had oil lamps in the rooms, as now there are lanterns; they<br \/>\nwere a little better but it was the same thing. So you were lighting your room<br \/>\nwith that, and then suddenly somebody invented the means of lighting it by<br \/>\nelectricity. So your oil lamp is replaced by a beautiful electric lamp which<br \/>\ngives ten times more light. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;What is your difficulty,<br \/>\nyour problem? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>You have always had a light to<br \/>\nillumine your room <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> your inner room <\/span><span lang=\"EL\" style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&#8213;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> but instead of an oil lamp it has become an electric lamp.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:.25in;line-height:150%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;You don\u2019t understand?
