\nBackground information on the texts and photographs is given below,
\nalong with references to the texts of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nPhotographs of Flowers<\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nMost of the 630 flower-photographs in this book
\nwere taken in the gardens and courtyards of the
\nSri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry and in the
\nnurseries, gardens, fields and forests of Auroville.
\nSome photographs, especially those of flowers
\nthat grow well only in cooler climates, were
\nphotographed in Bangalore and Ootacamund,
\nIndia, and in Germany. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nIn some of the photographs, the colour of the
\nflower differs in hue or intensity from the colour
\nmentioned in the text of Part 1 and the description of the flower in Part 2. The difference in
\ncolour may be due to several reasons: type of film
\nused, lighting conditions, limitations of printing,
\netc. Flowers photographed in strong sunlight
\nappear lighter in hue than those photographed
\nin subdued or indirect sunlight. While printing,
\nit is often difficult to duplicate the exact colour
\nof a flower, particularly when flowers of various
\ncolours appear on the same page.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nPhotographs of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother<\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe photograph of the Mother on the back
\nflap of the jacket of Part 1 was taken in Tokyo
\nin 1916. The photograph other in the preliminary pages of Part 1 was taken in Pondicherry in
\nJuly 1967. The photograph of Sri Aurobindo in
\nthe same preliminary pages was taken in Pondicherry in April 1950 by the French photographer
\nHenri Cartier-Bresson. The photograph of the
\nMother in the preliminary pages of Part 2 was
\nalso taken by Cartier-Bresson in April 1950. <\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe Mother’s Flower-Significances
\nand Her Comments on Them <\/b><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nFrom the start of the Ashram in 1927, the
\nMother used flowers in her interactions with
\nthe sadhaks who came to see her. From an early period, she gave "names" or
\n"significances" to certain flowers. In this way there evolved a language of
\nflowers by which the Mother communicated with the sadhaks. Within a few years,
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nshe had given names to hundreds of flowers. A
\nlist compiled by an Ashram gardener in 1930
\ncontained 410 entries. In 1953, a French sadhak
\nedited the Ashram’s first book on flowers, Le role
\ndes fleurs.<\/i> This contained 636 significances. In
\nthe early 1970s, the Mother reviewed these
\nsignificances, changing some of them, and added
\nmore than 240 new ones. At the same time she
\ngave a brief comment on almost all the flowers.
\nThe result of this revision was Flowers and Their
\nMessages,<\/i> issued in 1973, which contained 879
\nsignificances. The present book includes 19 new
\nsignificances discovered in the notebooks of early
\nAshram gardeners. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nThe early flower-significances were given in
\nEnglish. Later, in Le role des fleurs,<\/i> the significances were published both in English and
\nFrench. In Flowers and Their Messages,<\/i> many of
\nthe significances, especially the new ones, and
\nalmost all the comments were given in French
\nand then translated into English for the book.
\nIn the present book, some of those translations
\nhave been revised. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nselected from the thirty-volume Sri Aurobindo

\nhave been taken from various other books and journals, all published by the Ashram unless otherwise indicated. A small number of quotations are
