<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe definitions of the terms below are based upon the writings
\nof Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.<\/i> <\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>DHAR. Support, receptacle; the mental-vital-
\nphysical system as a vessel in which the
\nconsciousness is contained. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>DITI. The Divine Mother; the divine consciousness; the indivisible consciousness,
\nforce and Ananda of the Supreme. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>GNI. Fire; the godhead of fire; the fire
\n<\/b>of
\n<\/b>aspiration, purification, Tapasya,
\ntransformation. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>JNA CHAKRA. The centre of consciousness
\nbetween the eyebrows which governs
\n<\/b>the
\n<\/b>dynamic mind, will, vision, mental <\/b> formation.<\/b> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>NANDA. Delight, beatitude, bliss. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>NANDAMAYA. Full of Ananda. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nASCENT AND DESCENT<\/font>. The two-sided practice
\nof the Integral Yoga, an ascent of the
\nconsciousness to the higher planes, a descent
\nof the power of the higher planes into the
\nearth-consciousness so as to drive out the
\npower of darkness and ignorance and control
\nthe nature. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>SHRAM. The house or houses of a Teacher or
\nMaster of spiritual philosophy in which he receives and lodges those who come to him for the teaching and practice.
\nASPIRATION<\/font>. The call of the being for higher things, for the Divine, for all that belongs to the higher or divine consciousness.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nA<\/b>VATAR. Divine incarnation; one in whom the Divine Consciousness has descended <\/b> into human birth for a great world-work.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nB<\/font><\/b>HAKTA. A devotee, a lover of the Divine.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nB<\/b>HAKTI. Devotion, love for the Divine; the delight of the heart in God.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nB<\/b>RAHMA. The Divine in His aspect as Creator.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nB<\/b>RAHMAN. The One Reality, the Eternal, the Infinite, the Absolute, the One beside <\/b> whom there is nothing else existent.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nB<\/b>RINDAVAN. The place on earth (near Mathura) where Sri Krishna danced with the gopis (cowherdesses).
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nCALM.<\/font> A still, unmoved condition which no disturbance can affect; a strong and positive quietude, firm and solid.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nCENTRES<\/font> (OF<\/font>
\nCONSCIOUSNESS<\/font>). Centres (chakras) of the inner being; centres of consciousness
\nwhich connect the inner being with the outer
\npersonality. These centres are supposed to be
\nattached to the spinal cord, but in fact they
\nare in the subtle body; by their opening
\nthrough yoga, the yogic or inner consciousness
\ndevelops and one escapes from the limitations
\nof the surface consciousness.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nC<\/b>HIT (cit).<\/i> Pure consciousness, pure awareness; the essential consciousness of the Spirit. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nCONCENTRATION<\/font>. A gathering together of the
\nconsciousness and either centralising it at
\none point or turning it on a single object,
\nsuch as the Divine. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nC<\/b>ONSCIOUS FORCE. The Power of the Divine
\nMother which dominates all existence and
\nbuilds the worlds; a universal Energy that is
\nthe power of the Cosmic Spirit working out
\nthe cosmic and individual truth of things. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nCONSCIOUSNESS<\/font>. The self-aware force of existence.
\nThe essence of consciousness is the power to
\nbe aware of itself and its objects; but it is not
\nonly power of awareness of self and things, it
\nis or has also a dynamic and creative energy. Consciousness is not synonymous
\n<\/b>with
\n<\/b>mentality, which is only a middle term; below mentality, it sinks into vital and
\nmaterial movements which are for us sub-
\nconscient; above, it rises into the Supramental
\nwhich is for us the superconscient. See also

\nCONSECRATION<\/font>. The devoting of all that comes
\n<\/b>to
\n<\/b>one, all one’s experience and progress towards
\nthe Divine. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nCONVERSION<\/font>. A turning of the being away from
\nlower things towards the Divine. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nCOSMIC<\/font> CONSCIOUSNESS<\/font>. The consciousness of
\nthe universe, of the cosmic spirit and cosmic
\nNature, with all the beings and forces within
\nit. In the cosmic consciousness the limits of
\nthe ego, personal mind and body disappear
\nand one becomes aware of a cosmic vastness
\nwhich is or is filled by a cosmic spirit and
\naware also of the direct play of cosmic forces. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nC<\/b>OSMIC SPIRIT. The universal aspect of the
\nDivine, the one Self inhabiting the universe
\nand containing everything in it. In and behind
\nall things and beings, the Cosmic Spirit is that
\nfrom which all is manifested in the universe. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nDESCENT<\/font>. See ASCENT AND DESCENT
\n<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nD<\/b>IVINE, THE<\/font>. The Supreme Being from which
\nall comes and in which all lives. In its supreme
\nTruth, the Divine is absolute and infinite
\npeace, consciousness, existence, power and
\ndelight. The Transcendent, the Cosmic
\n(Universal) and the Individual are the three
\npowers of the Divine, overarching, underlying
\nand penetrating the whole of manifestation. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nD<\/b>IVINE
\nC<\/b>ONSCIOUSNESS. The spiritual consciousness to which the Divine alone
\nexists, because all is the Divine. Force, Light,
\nKnowledge and Ananda together make up
\nthe higher, spiritual or Divine Consciousness. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nD<\/b>IVINE FORCE. See

\nDIVINE <\/b> GRACE<\/font>.<\/b> See

\nT<\/b>HE D<\/b>IVINE PRESENCE. See PRESENCE,  <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nT<\/b>HE D<\/b>IVINE WILL. See

\nEGO<\/font>. The separative sense of individuality
\nwhich makes each being conceive of itself
\nas an independent personality. Ego implies
\nthe identification of one’s existence with the
\nouter mental, vital and physical self. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEMOTIONAL<\/font> BEING<\/font>. The emotional vital. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEMOTIONAL CENTRE.<\/font> The heart-centre of consciousness govarning the emotional being. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEMOTIONAL VITAL<\/font>. That part of the higher vital
\nbeing which is the seat of various feelings,
\nsuch as love, joy, sorrow, hatred, and the rest. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEMOTIVE VITAL<\/font>. The emotional vital. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEQUALITY<\/font>. The capacity to remain unmoved
\nwithin in all conditions; equanimity founded
\non the sense of the one Self, the one Divine
\neverywhere. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nEVOLUTION<\/font>. The progressive unfolding of Spirit
\nout of the density of material consciousness; the method by which the One Being and
\nConsciousness, involved here in Matter,
\nliberates itself from matter into life, from
\n<\/b>life
\n<\/b>into mind, from mind into the spirit. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nFAITH<\/font>. The soul’s witness to something not yet
\nmanifested, achieved or realised, but which
\nyet the Knower within us feels to be true or
\nsupremely worth following or achieving; the
\nsoul’s belief in the Divine s existence, wisdom,
\npower, love and grace. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nF<\/b>ORCE, THE<\/font>. The Divine Force, the one Energy
\nthat alone exists and alone makes universal or
\nindividual action possible, for this Force is the Divine itself in the body of its power; in
\nthe individual it is a Force for illumination,
\ntransformation, purification, for all that has
\nto be done in the yoga.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>ITA. Short form of Bhagavad Gita, "the Song
\nof the Blessed Lord", being the spiritual
\nteachings of Sri Krishna spoken to Arjuna
\non the battlefield of Kurukshetra; it occurs
\nas an episode in the Mahabharata. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>NOSIS. A supreme totally self-aware and all-
\naware Intelligence; the Supermind. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>OD. The Absolute, the Spirit, the Self spaceless
\nand timeless, the Self manifest in the Cosmos
\nand Lord of Nature. God is the All and that
\nwhich transcends the All. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>ODHEAD. The one supreme divine Being. In
\nHis supreme status He is a transcendent
\nunthinkable too great for any manifestation; in His universal status He is the supreme
\nLord, the Master of works and universal
\nnature; in His immanent status He is the
\nliving supreme Soul in all things, the Lord
\nin the heart of all creatures. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>ODS, THE<\/font>. In origin and essence the Gods are
\npermanent Emanations of the Divine put
\nforth from the Supreme by the Transcendent
\nMother; in their cosmic action they are Powers
\nand Personalities of the Divine each with his
\nindependent cosmic standing, function and
\nwork in the universe. In the Vedas the Gods
\nare also the companions and helpers of man; <\/font><\/p>\n

\nthey recognise in the soul of man their brother
\nand ally and desire to help and increase him by
\nthemselves increasing in him so as to possess
\nhis world with their light, strength and beauty. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>RACE, THE<\/font> (Divine Grace). The help of a higher
\nDivine Force other than the force of Karma, which can lift the sadhak beyond
\nthe present possibilities of his nature. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>RATITUDE. A loving recognition of the Grace received from the Divine; a humble
\nrecognition of all that the Divine has done
\nand is doing for you. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nH<\/b>ANSA. The Swan, symbol of the human soul
\nin its upward flight. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nH<\/b>IGHER
\nM<\/b>IND. See SPIRITUALISED MIND <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nHIGHER VITAL<\/font>. See
\nVITAL, <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nTHE HOSTILE FORCES<\/font>. Anti-divine, not merely undivine
\nforces that are in revolt against the Divine,
\nagainst the Truth and Light, and opposed to
\nthe yoga. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>GNORANCE,
\nTHE<\/font>. The Ignorance of oneness; the separative consciousness and the egoistic
\nmind and life that flow from it and all that
\nis natural to the separative consciousness and
\nthe egoistic mind and life; the consciousness
\nof the divided Many divorced from the
\nunifying knowledge of the One Reality. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>LLUMINED
\nM<\/b>IND. See SPIRITUALISED MIND <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>MMANENT,
\nTHE<\/font>. The one pure and absolute
\nExistence present in all things and beings even
\nas all things and beings exist in It and by It,
\nand nothing can be or happen without this
\nindwelling and all-supporting Presence. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nIMMORTALITY<\/font>. The consciousness which is beyond
\nbirth and death, beyond the chain of cause
\nand effect, beyond all bondage and limitation,
\nfree, blissful, self-existent in conscious-being; the absolute life of the soul as opposed to the
\ntransient and mutable life in the body which
\nit assumes by birth and death and rebirth. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>NCONSCIENT,
\nTHE<\/font> (the Inconscience). The Supreme’s state of self-involved, self-oblivious
\nconsciousness and force which is at the basis
\nof the material world; this state is the apparent
\nopposite of the Supreme and in it there can
\nbe darkness, inertia, insensibility, disharmony
\nand disintegration. Not really inconscient at
\nall, it is rather a complete "sub"-conscience,
\na suppressed or involved consciousness. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nINNER<\/font> BEING<\/font>. The inner mind, inner vital, inner
\nphysical, with the psychic behind as the
\ninmost. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nINSPIRATION<\/font>. Something that comes out of the
\nknowledge planes like a flash and opens up
\nthe mind to the Truth in a moment; a slender
\nriver of brightness leaping from a vast and
\neternal knowledge. \u2022 <\/font><\/p>\n

\nINTEGRAL<\/font>. Of or relating to all the parts of the
\nbeing, mental, vital, physical, psychic,
\nspiritual. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>NTEGRAL YOGA. A union (yoga)<\/i> in all the
\nparts of our being with the Divine and
\na consequent transmutation of all their
\nnow jarring elements into the harmony of
\na higher divine consciousness and existence; this yoga implies not only the realisation of
\nGod but the entire consecration and change
\nof the inner and outer life till it is fit to
\nmanifest a divine consciousness and become
\npart of a divine work. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>NTUITION. See
\nSPIRITUALISED MIND <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>NTUITIVE MIND. See

\nK<\/b>NOWLEDGE, THE. The knowledge of the One
\nReality, the consciousness of Unity. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nK<\/b>RISHNA. As a godhead Krishna is the Lord of
\nAnanda, Love and bhakti; as an incarnation
\nhe manifests the union of wisdom (Jnana)
\nand works and leads the world evolution
\nthrough this towards union with the Divine
\nby Ananda, Love and bhakti.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nK<\/b>RISHNA’S
\nL<\/b>IGHT. A spiritual light of purification
\nand illumination. Its colour depends on the
\nplane in which it manifests. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nLIBERATION<\/font>. The release of the soul from the
\noutward ignorant existence into the freedom,
\ncalm, wideness of the Spirit. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nL<\/b>IFE. Being at labour in Matter to express itself
\nin terms of Conscious Force; an energy of
\nSpirit subordinated to action of mind and
\nbody, which fulfils itself through mentality
\nand physicality and acts as a link between
\nthem. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nLIFE<\/font>–ENERGY<\/font>. Life-force, not physical in itself,
\nnot material energy, but rather a different
\nprinciple supporting Matter and involved in
\nit. It supports and occupies all forms and
\nwithout it no physical form could have come
\ninto being or could remain in being. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nL<\/b>IGHT, THE<\/font>. Primarily a spiritual manifestation
\nof the Divine Reality illuminative and creative; spiritual Light is not knowledge, but the
\nillumination that comes from above and
\nliberates the being from obscurity and
\ndarkness. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nL<\/b>ILA. Play, game; the cosmic play, the divine play. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nLOWER NATURE<\/font>. The universal lower Nature is
\na mechanism of active Force put forth for
\nthe working of the evolutionary Ignorance.
\nThe lower nature of the individual is his mind,
\nlife and body. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nLOWER<\/font> VITAL<\/font>. See
\nVITAL, THE <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>AHAKALI. The Divine Mother’s Power of force
\nand strength. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>AHALAKSHMI. The Divine Mother’s Power of
\nHarmony. Through love and beauty she lays
\non men the yoke of the Divine and brings
\nto them her gifts of the spirit’s grace, the charm and beauty of the Ananda, refinement,
\nopulence, protection and blessing. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>AHASARASWATI. The Divine Mother’s Power of
\nWork and her spirit of perfection and order.
\nThe science and craft and technique of things
\nare her province; she presides over the
\norganisation and execution of things and
\nassures the material foundation. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>AHASHAKTI. The great Power, the universal
\nMother. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nMATERIAL VITAL<\/font>. That part of the lower vital
\nturned entirely to physical things, full of
\ndesires and greeds and seekings for pleasure
\non the physical plane. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>ATTER. Being manifest as substance; substance
\nof the one Conscious Being. A self-formed
\nmask and robe of the divine Spirit, Matter is
\nnot fundamentally real, but a form of the
\nforce of Conscious Being. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nMIND<\/font>. The words "mind" and "mental" are used
\nto connote specially the part of the nature
\nwhich has to do with cognition and
\nintelligence, with ideas, with mental or
\nthought perceptions, the reactions of thought
\nto things, with the truly mental movements
\nand formations, mental vision and will, etc.
\nthat are part of man’s intelligence. The
\nordinary mind has three main parts: mind
\nproper, vital mind, and physical mind.
\nThe MIND<\/font> PROPER<\/font> is divided into three parts: the thinking mind or intellect, concerned with
\nideas and knowledge in their own right; the
\ndynamic mind, concerned with the putting
\nout of mental forces for the realisation of the
\nideas; and the externalising mind, concerned
\nwith the expression of ideas in life.
\nThe VITAL<\/font> MIND<\/font> or desire mind is a mind of  dynamic will, action, desire; it is occupied
\nwith force and achievement and satisfaction
\nand possession, with enjoyment and suffering,
\ngiving and taking, growth and expansion, etc.
\nThe PHYSICAL<\/font> MIND<\/font> is that part of the mind
\nwhich is concerned with physical things only; limited by the physical view and experience
\nof things, it mentalises the experience brought
\nby the contact of outward life and things, but
\ndoes not go beyond that. The mechanical
\nmind, closely connected with the physical
\nmind, goes on repeating without use whatever
\nhas happened. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nOvertopping the ordinary mind, hidden in
\nour own superconscient parts, there are higher
\nranges of Mind, gradations of spiritualised
\nmind leading to the Supermind. See SPIRITUALISED MIND <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>IND OF LIGHT. A mind capable of living in the
\ntruth, capable of being truth-conscious and
\nmanifesting in its life a direct in place of an
\nindirect knowledge; there is in it an action
\nof light, of truth, of knowledge in which
\ninconscience, error and ignorance claim no
\nplace. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>OTHER, THE. The Consciousness and Force of
\nthe Divine, which is the Mother of all things; the Divine in its consciousness-force. The
\nMother is the divine Conscious Force that
\ndominates all existence, upholding us and
\nthe universe. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>ULADHARA. The centre of consciousness at
\n<\/b>the
\n<\/b>base of the spine which governs the physical
\ndown to the subconscient. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nN<\/font><\/b>ATURE. The outer or executive side of the
\nConscious Force which forms and moves
\n<\/b>the
\n<\/b>worlds. The higher, divine Nature (Para-
\nPrakriti) is free from Ignorance and its
\nconsequences; the lower Nature (Prakriti) is
\na mechanism of active Force put forth for the
\nworking of the evolutionary Ignorance. The
\nlower nature of an individual is his mind, life
\nand body.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nNEW CREATION<\/font>. The manifestation of a divine life
\nupon earth as the result of the working of the
\nsupramental consciousness and force and love. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nOCCULTISM<\/font>. The knowledge and right use of the
\nhidden forces of nature; true occultism means
\na search into supraphysical realities and an
\nunveiling of the hidden laws of being and
\nNature, of all that is not obvious on the
\nsurface. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nOPENING<\/font>. A release of the consciousness by which
\nit begins to admit into itself the working of
\nthe Divine Life and Power; the ability of the
\nconsciousness on the various levels to receive
\nthe descent of the Higher Consciousness
\nabove. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nOUTER BEING<\/font>. The surface being, our ordinary
\nexterior mind, life, body consciousness. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nO<\/b>VERMIND. See
\nSPIRITUALISED MIND <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>ARABRAHMAN. The supreme Brahman, the supracosmic Divine, timeless, spaceless, unmanifest, inexpressible.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>ARAMATMAN. The supreme Self, the transcendent Spirit.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>ARAMESHWARA. The supreme Lord. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPEACE<\/font>. A deep quietude bringing not merely a release, but a certain happiness or Ananda of itself, a harmony that gives a feeling of liberation and foil satisfaction.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nPHYSICAL, THE<\/font>. That part of the individual nature which includes the physical body and the physical consciousness; by physical consciousness is meant the physical mind
\nand the physical vital as well as the body
\nconsciousness proper.<\/font><\/p>\n

\n PHYSICAL MIND<\/font>. See

\nPLANE<\/font>. A level of world-existence; a world or
\nlevel in the scale of being with its own system
\nand ordering of principles. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPLASTICITY<\/font>. Suppleness, the capacity to adapt to
\ncircumstances. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>RANAMAYA PURUSHA. The (true) vital being. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>RESENCE, THE. The sense and perception of
\nthe Divine as a Being felt as present in one’s
\nexistence and consciousness or in relation
\nwith it. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPSYCHIC<\/font>. Of or relating to the soul (as distinguished from the mind and vital). Used
\nin the sense of the Greek word "psyche",
\nmeaning "soul", the term "psychic" refers to
\nall the movements and experiences of the soul,
\nthose which rise from or directly touch the
\npsychic being. It does not refer to all the more
\ninward and all the abnormal experiences in
\nwhich the mind and vital predominate; such
\nexperiences, in this terminology, would be
\ncalled psychological (surface or occult), not
\npsychic. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPSYCHIC, THE<\/font>. The soul; the psychic essence; the
\npsychic being. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPSYCHIC BEING.<\/font> The evolving soul of the individual, the divine portion in him which
\nevolves from life to life, growing by its
\nexperiences until it becomes a fully conscious
\nbeing. From its place behind the heart-centre,
\nthe psychic being supports the mind, life and
\nbody, aiding their growth and development.
\nThe term "soul" is often used as a synonym
\nfor "psychic being", but strictly speaking there
\nis a distinction: the soul is the psychic essence,
\nthe psychic being is the soul-personality put
\nforward and developed by the psychic essence

\nPSYCHIC ESSENCE.<\/font> The soul in its essence; the
\ndivine element in the individual which
\nsupports the evolution of his being in Nature.
\nIn the course of the evolution the psychic
\nessence grows and takes form as the psychic
\nbeing. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPSYCHICISATION.<\/font> The psychic change in which
\nthe psychic being comes forward to dominate
\nthe mind, vital and physical and change the
\nlower nature. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nPURITY.<\/font> Freedom from soil or mixture. The
\ndivine purity is that in which there is no
\nmixture of the turbid ignorant movements
\nof the lower nature. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>URUSHA. Conscious Soul, Conscious Being; essential Being supporting the play of Nature; the true or spiritual Person. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>URUSHOTTAMA. The Supreme Being who is
\nsuperior both to the mutable Being and
\n<\/b>to
\n<\/b>the Immutable. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nQUIET.<\/font> The absence of restlessness or disturbance. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nR<\/b>ADHA. The maiden of Brindavan in the Puranas; entirely self-given in her love for Krishna, she
\nis the personification of absolute love for the
\nDivine, complete self-giving and total
\nconsecration. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nREALISATION<\/font>. The reception in the consciousness
\nand the establishment there of the
\nfundamental truths of the Divine; the making
\nreal to ourselves and in ourselves of the Self,
\nthe transcendent and universal Divine. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nRECEPTIVITY<\/font>. The power to receive the Divine Force and to feel its presence and allow it to
\nwork, guiding one’s sight and will and action; the capacity of admitting and retaining the
\ndivine workings.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nREVELATION.<\/font> The direct sight, the direct hearing
\nor the inspired memory of Truth; it is a part
\nof the intuitive consciousness. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>ACHCHIDANANDA (Sat-Chit-Ananda). The
\n<\/b>One
\n<\/b>Divine Being with a triple aspect of Existence
\n(Sat), Consciousness (Chit) and Delight
\n(Ananda). God is Sachchidananda; He
\nmanifests Himself as infinite Existence of
\nwhich the essentiality is Consciousness,
\n<\/b>of
\n<\/b>which again the essentiality is bliss, is self-
\ndelight. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSADHAK<\/font>. One who practises a spiritual discipline; one who is getting or trying to get spiritual
\nrealisation. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSADHANA.<\/font> Spiritual practice or discipline; the
\npractice of yoga. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSADHIKA.<\/font> Female sadhak. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>AMADHI. Sanctuary or tomb of a saint; inner
\ntrance; yogic trance in which the mind
\nacquires the capacity of withdrawing from its
\nlimited waking activities into freer and higher
\nstates of consciousness. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>AT. Pure existence, pure being. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSELF, THE. <\/font>The Atman, the universal Spirit, the
\nself-existent Being, the conscious essential
\nExistence, one in all. The Self is being, not
\na being; it is the original and essential nature
\nof our existence. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>ELF-KNOWLEDGE. The knowledge of the Self. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSHAKTI.<\/font> Force, Power; the Divine Power; the
\nPower of the Mother; the consciousness and
\nforce of the Divine; the Mother and Energy
\nof the worlds. <\/font><\/p>\n

\nSIDDHI<\/font>. Perfection, accomplishment of the aims
\nof yoga.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSILENCE<\/font>. Freedom from thoughts and vital
\nmovements \u2014 when the whole consciousness
\nis quite still; not only cessation of thoughts
\nbut a stillness of the mental and vital
\nsubstance.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSINCERITY<\/font>. To mean what one says, feel what
\none professes, be earnest in one’s will; sincerity
\nin the sadhak means that he is really in earnest
\nin his aspiration for the Divine and refuses
\nall other will or impulse except the Divine’s;<\/font><\/p>\n

it means to allow no part of the being to
\ncontradict the highest aspiration towards the
\nDivine.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSOUL<\/font>. The psychic essence or entity, the divine
\nelement in the individual; a spark of the
\nDivine that comes down into the
\nmanifestation to support the evolution of the
\nindividual. In the course of the evolution, the
\nsoul grows and evolves in the form of a soul-
\npersonality, the psychic being. The term "soul"
\nis often used as a synonym for "psychic being".<\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>PIRIT. The Consciousness above mind, the
\nAtman or Self which is always in oneness with
\nthe Divine.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSPIRITUAL<\/font>. Of the spirit. All contacts with the
\nSelf, the Higher Consciousness, the Divine
\nabove are spiritual.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSPIRITUALISATION<\/font>. The spiritual change in which
\nthere is the established descent of the divine
\npeace, light, knowledge, power, bliss from
\nabove, the awareness of the Self and the
\nDivine and of a higher cosmic consciousness
\nand the change of the whole nature to that.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSPIRITUALISED MIND<\/font>. Higher ranges of Mind
\novertopping our normal mind and leading to Supermind; these successive states, levels or
\ngraded powers of being are hidden in our own
\nsuperconscious parts. In ascending order the
\ngradations of spiritualised mind are:<\/font><\/p>\n

\nH<\/b>IGHER M<\/b>IND. A luminous thought-mind
\nwhose instrumentation is through an elevated
\nthought-power and comprehensive mental
\nsight. In the Higher Mind one becomes
\nconstantly and closely aware of the Self, the
\nOne everywhere and knows and sees habitually
\nwith that awareness.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>LLUMINED M<\/b>IND. A mind no longer of higher
\nthought, but of spiritual light; here the clarity
\nof the intelligence, its tranquil daylight, gives
\nplace or subordinates itself to an intense lustre,
\na splendour and illumination of the Spirit.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>NTUITIVE MIND. A mind of intuitive reason characterised by its intuitions, its inspirations,
\nits swift revelatory vision, its luminous insight
\nand discrimination; it is a kind of truth-vision,
\ntruth-hearing, truth-memory, direct truth-
\ndiscernment.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nI<\/b>NTUITION. A power of consciousness nearer
\nand more intimate than the lower ranges of
\nspiritual mind to the original knowledge by
\nidentity; it gets the Truth in flashes and
\nturns these flashes of Truth-perception into
\nintuitions \u2014 intuitive ideas. Intuition is always
\nan edge or ray or outleap of a superior light.
\nWhat is thought-knowledge in the Higher
\nMind becomes illumination in the Illumined
\nMind and direct intimate vision in the
\nIntuition.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nO<\/b>VERMIND. Full of lights and powers, the
\nOvermind sees calmly, steadily, in great masses
\nand large extensions of space and time and
\nrelation, globally; it creates and acts in the same way. The Overmind is a delegate of
\nthe Supramental Consciousness, its delegate
\nto the cosmic Ignorance. The Supramental is
\nthe total Truth-Consciousness; the Overmind
\ndraws down the truths separately and gives
\nthem a separate identity.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSUBCONSCIENT, THE.<\/font> A nether diminished
\nconsciousness which lies between the
\nInconscient and the conscious mind, life and
\n<\/b>body. The individual subconscient is that
\nsubmerged part of one’s being in which there
\nis no waking conscious and coherent thought,
\nwill, feeling or organised reaction, but which
\nyet obscurely receives the impressions of all
\nthings and stores them up in itself, and from
\nit too all sorts of stimuli, of persistent habitual
\nmovements can surge up into dream or into
\nthe waking nature.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSUBTLE BODY<\/font>. A subtler material existence behind
\nour outer body which provides the substance
\nnot only of our physical but of our<\/b> vital and
\n<\/b>mental sheaths.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSUBTLE PHYSICAL.<\/font> The plane of consciousness
\nclosest to the physical; it may also be
\nconsidered as a sub-plane of the physical
\nwith a vital and mental character.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSUKSHMA DEHA<\/font>. The subtle body.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>UPERCONSCIENT, THE<\/font>. Something above our
\npresent consciousness from which the higher
\nconsciousness comes down into the body; it
\nincludes the higher planes of mental being as
\nwell as the native heights of Supramental and
\npure spiritual being.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSUPERMAN<\/font>. The next superior type after man,
\nhe who will consciously evolve out of man,
\nrise above ego and mind and possess himself universalised and divinised in a divine force,<\/font>
\na divine love and joy and a divine knowledge.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>UPERMIND. The Supramental, the Truth-
\nConsciousness, the Divine Gnosis, the highest
\ndivine consciousness and force operative in
\nthe universe. A principle of consciousness
\nsuperior to mentality, it exists, acts and
\nproceeds in the fundamental truth and
\nunity of things and not like the mind in
\ntheir appearances and phenomenal divisions.
\nIts fundamental character is knowledge by
\nidentity, by which the Self is known, the
\nDivine Sachchidananda is known, but also
\nthe truth of manifestation is known because
\nthis too is that.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>UPRAMENTAL. See SUPERMIND<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

\nSUPRAMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS<\/font>. See
\nSUPERMIND<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

\nSURRENDER<\/font>. To consecrate everything in oneself
\nto the Divine, to offer all one is and has, not
\nto insist on one’s ideas, desires, habits, etc.
\nbut to allow the divine Truth to replace them
\nby its knowledge, will and action everywhere.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nS<\/b>HYAMSUNDARA. "Beautiful dark one", a name
\nof Krishna.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nSYMBOL<\/font>. The form of one plane that represents
\na truth of another.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nTAPASYA<\/font>. Effort, energy, austerity of the personal
\nwill; concentration of the will and energy to
\ncontrol the mind, vital and physical and to
\nchange them or to bring down the higher
\nconsciousness or for any other yogic <\/b> or high
\npurpose.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nTRANSFORMATION<\/font>. Not just a change of<\/font><\/p>\n

consciousness, but the bringing down of the
\nhigher, divine consciousness and nature into
\nthe lower nature of mind, life and body, and
\nthe replacement of the lower by the higher.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nT<\/b>RUTH-C<\/b>ONSCIOUSNESS. The Supermind; the consciousness of essential truth of being
\n(satyam),<\/i> of ordered truth of active being
\n(ritani)<\/i> and the vast self-awareness (brihat)
\n<\/i>in which alone this consciousness is possible.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nTRUST<\/font>. The feeling of sure expectation of
\nanother’s help and reliance on his word,
\ncharacter, etc; the mind’s and hearts complete
\nreliance on the Divine and its guidance and
\nprotection.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nV<\/b>EDA. A generic name for the most ancient
\nIndian sacred scripture, especially the mantras
\nor metrical hymns of the Rig-veda.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nV<\/b>IBHUTI. Divine power.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nVITAL, THE.<\/font> The life-nature made up of desires,
\nsensations, feelings, passions, energies
\n<\/b>of
\n<\/b>action, will of desire, reactions of the desire-
\nsoul of man and of all that play of possessive
\nand other related instincts, anger, greed, lust,
\netc., that belong to this field of the nature.
\nThe vital part of man is a true instrument <\/b>only<\/font><\/p>\n

. when its feelings and tendencies have been
\npurified by. the psychic touch and governed
\nby the spiritual light and power. The vital
\n<\/b>has
\n<\/b>three main parts:<\/font><\/p>\n

\nHIGHER VITAL<\/font>. The mental vital and emotive
\nvital taken together. The mental vital gives
\na mental expression by thought, speech or
\notherwise to the emotions, desires, passions,
\nsensations or other movements of the vital
\nbeing; the emotive or emotional vital is the
\nseat of various feelings, such as love, joy,
\nsorrow, hatred and the rest.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nCENTRAL VITAL<\/font> (or vital proper). Dynamic,
\nsensational and passionate, it is the seat of the
\nstronger vital longings and reactions, such as
\nambition, pride, fear, love of fame, attractions
\nand repulsions, desires and passions of various kinds and the field of many vital energies.
\nLOWER VITAL<\/font>. Made up of the smaller
\nmovements of human life desire and life-
\nreactions it is occupied with small desires and
\nfeelings, such as food desire, sexual desire,
\nsmall likings, dislikings, vanity, quarrels, love
\nof praise, anger at blame, little wishes of all
\nkinds, etc. The material vital is that part of
\nthe lower vital turned entirely upon physical
\nthings, full of desires and greeds and seekings
\nfor pleasure on the physical plane.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nVITAL MIND<\/font>. See
\nMIND<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

\nWIDENESS<\/font>. The expansion of consciousness
\nthat comes when one exceeds or begins to
\nexceed the individual consciousness and spread
\nout towards the universal; it is felt as a great
\nsubstantial vastness giving the sense of oneness
\nfree and infinite.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWILL<\/font>. A force put upon a thing to be changed;<\/font><\/p>\n

the power of consciousness turned towards
\neffectuation.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nW<\/b>ILL, D<\/b>IVINE. Something that has descended
\nhere into an evolutionary world of Ignorance,
\nstanding at the back of things, pressing on
\nthe Darkness with its Light, leading things
\npresently towards the best possible in the
\nconditions of a world of Ignorance and leading
\nit eventually towards a descent of a greater
\npower of the Divine, which will not be an
\nomnipotence held back and conditioned by
\nthe law of the world as it is, but in full action
\nand therefore bringing the reign of light,
\npeace, harmony, joy, love, beauty and Ananda.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nY<\/b>OGA. Joining; union; union with the Divine
\nand the conscious seeking for this union. Yoga
\nis in essence the union of the soul with the
\nimmortal being and consciousness and bliss<\/font><\/p>\n
