In this book, these flowers and their<br \/>\nmeanings are presented in -the light of her<br \/>\nvision and experience.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The book consists of two separately bound<br \/>\nparts. Part 1, the text and photographs, is<br \/>\narranged thematically on the basis of the<br \/>\nMother&#8217;s flower-significances. In each of the<br \/>\ntwelve chapters, flowers of related significance<br \/>\nare grouped together; these groups are then<br \/>\nplaced in a sequence that develops the theme of the chapter. The organisation of<br \/>\nthe chapters is outlined in the Contents.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">For each flower in Part 1, the following<br \/>\ndetails are given: the Mother&#8217;s significance,<br \/>\nher comment on the significance, the<br \/>\nbotanical name, and the colour or colours<br \/>\nof the flower. Relevant quotations from the<br \/>\nworks of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother<br \/>\naccompany many flower-significances as an<br \/>\naid to understanding them. For most flowers<br \/>\nthere is a colour photograph to facilitate<br \/>\nidentification.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Part 2 is a reference volume containing<br \/>\nindexes, glossaries, detailed descriptions of<br \/>\nthe flowers and other information. The three<br \/>\nindexes make it possible to locate the flowers<br \/>\nin Part 1 by looking under the Mother&#8217;s<br \/>\nsignificance, the botanical name or the<br \/>\ncommon name.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:0;text-align:left\" align=\"center\">\n<font color=\"#E6871A\"><b><br \/>\n<a name=\"The_Origin_of_the_Significances_\"><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"5\">The Origin of the Significances<\/font><font size=\"5\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/a><\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><i>Mother, when flowers are brought to you, how<br \/>\ndo you give them a significance?<br \/>\n<\/i>By entering into contact with the nature of<br \/>\nthe flower, its inner truth. Then one knows<br \/>\nwhat it represents.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font size=\"3\"><i>Mother, how do you give a significance to<br \/>\na flower?<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">By entering into contact with it and giving a<br \/>\nmeaning, more or less precise, to what I feel.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font size=\"3\"><i>Mother, each flower has its own significance,<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t it?<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Not as we understand it mentally. There is a<br \/>\nmental projection when one gives a precise significance to a flower. &#8230; A<br \/>\nflower does not have the equivalent of a mental consciousness. &#8230; It is rather like the movement<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">of a little baby, neither a sensation nor a<br \/>\nfeeling, but something of both; it is a spontaneous movement, a very special vibration.<br \/>\nWell, if one is in contact with this vibration,<br \/>\nif one feels it, one receives an impression<br \/>\nwhich may be translated by a thought. This<br \/>\nis how I give a significance to flowers and<br \/>\nplants. A student at<br \/>\nthe Academic Julian, she became an accomplished artist. Gifted from an early age with<br \/>\na capacity for spiritual and occult experience,<br \/>\nshe went to Tlemcen, Algeria, in 1906 and<br \/>\n1907 to study occultism with the adept Max<br \/>\nTheon and his wife. Between 1911 and 1913<br \/>\nshe gave a number of talks to various groups<br \/>\nof seekers in Paris and began to record her<br \/>\ndeepening communion with the Divine in<br \/>\nthe diary later published as <i>Prayers and<br \/>\nMeditations.<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">In 1914 the Mother voyaged to Pondicherry,<br \/>\nSouth India, to meet the Indian mystic Sri<br \/>\nAurobindo. After a stay of eleven months,<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">she was obliged by the outbreak of the First<br \/>\nWorld War to return to France. A year later<br \/>\nshe went to Japan, where she remained<br \/>\nfor four years. In April 1920 the Mother<br \/>\nrejoined Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry. Six<br \/>\nyears later, when the Sri Aurobindo Ashram<br \/>\nwas founded, Sri Aurobindo entrusted its<br \/>\nmaterial and spiritual charge to her, for<br \/>\nhe considered her not a disciple but his<br \/>\nspiritual equal and collaborator. Under<br \/>\nher guidance the Ashram grew into a large,<br \/>\nmany-faceted spiritual community. She<br \/>\nalso established a school, the Sri Aurobindo<br \/>\nInternational Centre of Education, in 1952,<br \/>\nand an international township, Auroville,<br \/>\nin 1968. The Mother passed away on 17<br \/>\nNovember 1973.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><a name=\"Sri_Aurobindo_\"><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"5\" color=\"#E28C1A\">Sri Aurobindo <\/font><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:0;text-align:center\" align=\"center\">\n          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-02 Works of The Mother\/-02Other Editions\/-05_The Spiritual Significance of Flowers\/_images\/00%20sri%20aurobindo.jpg\" width=\"604\" height=\"384\"> <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:0;text-align:left\" align=\"center\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font color=\"#E6871A\"><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"5\">Sri Aurobindo<\/font><font size=\"5\"> <\/font><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Sri Aurobindo was born in Calcutta on<br \/>\n15 August 1872. At the age of seven he was<br \/>\ntaken to England for his education. There<br \/>\nhe studied at St. Paul&#8217;s School, London, and<br \/>\nat King&#8217;s College, Cambridge. Returning<br \/>\nto India in 1893, he worked for the next<br \/>\nthirteen years in the Princely State of Baroda<br \/>\nin the service of the Maharaja and as a<br \/>\nprofessor in the state&#8217;s college.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">In 1906 Sri Aurobindo quit his post in<br \/>\nBaroda and went to Calcutta, where he<br \/>\nbecame one of the leaders of the Indian<br \/>\nnationalist movement. As editor of the news-<br \/>\npaper <i>Bande Mataram,<\/i> he boldly put forward<br \/>\nthe idea of complete independence from<br \/>\nBritain. Arrested three times for sedition or<br \/>\ntreason, he was released each time for<br \/>\nlack of evidence.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0;text-indent:25pt\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Sri Aurobindo began the practice of Yoga<br \/>\nin 1905. Within a few years he achieved<br \/>\nseveral fundamental spiritual realisations.<br \/>\nIn 1910 he withdrew from politics and<br \/>\nwent to Pondicherry in French India in<br \/>\norder to concentrate on his inner life<br \/>\nand work. During his forty years there,<br \/>\nhe developed a new spiritual path, the<br \/>\nIntegral Yoga, whose ultimate aim is the<br \/>\ntransformation of life by the power of a<br \/>\nsupramental consciousness. In 1926, with<br \/>\nthe help of the Mother, he founded the<br \/>\nSri Aurobindo Ashram.
