At times its passing fills my heart with tears. <\/span><\/p>\n

Maddened it runs and maddening him who hears. <\/span><\/p>\n

What spirit lives and laughs and weeps in thee? <\/span><\/p>\n

What thought is here that cries eternally? <\/span><\/p>\n

I know not, but a trembling sweet and strong <\/span><\/p>\n

Has taken my every limb touched by thy song, <\/span><\/p>\n

0 infinite Voice, 0 Soul that callst to me, <\/span><\/p>\n

As I look on this luminous dawn and on the sea!  <\/span><\/p>\n

The flute of dawn has rung out on the sea, <\/span><\/p>\n

And in a holiday of festal glee<\/span><\/p>\n

The radiant sunbeams dally and happily stream:<\/span><\/p>\n

How on thy body they wallow, laugh and gleam! <\/span><\/p>\n

Flowers blown in song on a bright welter cast! <\/span><\/p>\n

The riches of sunlight quiver along thy vast <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet tumult, kindle the world thy chantings hold,<\/span><\/p>\n

Or,<\/b> rocking, for thy feet are chains of gold. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now has thy cry become a bird of sound, <\/span><\/p>\n

And on the wings, the throbbing breast around <\/span><\/p>\n

A dream of gold is smeared; in my heart\u2019s skies <\/span><\/p>\n

The beautiful vagrant making springtide flies. <\/span><\/p>\n

There wings the floating mighty creature, joys <\/span><\/p>\n

Threading and lights, a glory and a voice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Her limbs are clad in silver light of dreams, <\/span><\/p>\n

Her brilliant influence on the water streams, <\/span><\/p>\n

And in that argent flood to one white theme <\/span><\/p>\n

Are gathering all the hues and threads of dream. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tricked with her fire the heavens richly fill;<\/span><\/p>\n

To an eternal chant the winds are still;<\/span><\/p>\n

And all thy bosom\u2019s deep unquiet taken <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou hast wrung out and into melody shaken, <\/span><\/p>\n

And all the sounds that stirred the earth so long <\/span><\/p>\n

Are called into a wordless trance of song. <\/span><\/p>\n

0 minstrel of infinity! What world <\/span><\/p>\n

Soundless has known that music? What ether curled <\/span><\/p>\n

In voiceless sleep? Where are those notes withdrawn? <\/span><\/p>\n

Into the hush of what eternal dawn? <\/span><\/p>\n

I have no art of speech, no charm of song,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nmeasure nor the lyric pace. <\/span><\/p>\n

No words alluring to my skill belong.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nthought\u2019s free termless heavens efface <\/span><\/p>\n

Limit and mark; upon my spirit is thrown <\/span><\/p>\n

The shadow of infinity alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here in thy solitude of shoreless sound. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou melody fathomless! 0 sea where floats <\/span><\/p>\n

Song timeless! What were these immortal notes <\/span><\/p>\n

Passions of azure, miracles of gold. <\/span><\/p>\n

My eyes had hunger for form\u2019s mysteries <\/span><\/p>\n

And wandered in vision upon colour\u2019s seas. <\/span><\/p>\n

Paint out these hues! draw darkness like a brush <\/span><\/p>\n

Over these tired eyelids! blind me, hush! <\/span><\/p>\n

Ah, not for visible delight I long! <\/span><\/p>\n

My soul enchanted only by thy song <\/span><\/p>\n

I will swim out upon thy waves of sound, <\/span><\/p>\n

0 Voice, and sink into thee for ever drowned. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then shall I pass into thy hymn, 0 sea. <\/span><\/p>\n

A million lives today have met in one <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>A pain
\nunquiet in their broken shocks. <\/span><\/p>\n

Trembling there moans a large lament today. <\/span><\/p>\n

The heavens are filled with dusk and sad and grey.<\/span><\/p>\n

An endless outcry fills my soul today.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOver thy breast of gloom. Loud and dismayed

\nThy lost enormous chant rolls purposeless

\nSeeking its end in an
\nunregioned<\/span> space. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\n0 come, thou great mad sea, 0 surging come!

\nMy breast defenceless<\/span>
\nmates thy dolorous foam. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nDarkness the heavens, the wind doom’s signal
\nbreath, <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nI shall float on through thee or sink in
\ndeath. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis is not now the lyre’s melodious stream,

\nThese are not now the blossoming groves of

\nBut Rffdra’s<\/span>
\ntorrent comes with pitiless play:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe world sinks down as on its last wild day.
\n<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe fathomless depths leap up to mix the sky;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nWinds of destruction’s sport walk tenebrously.
\n<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nMasses of driving death go chanting by, <\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe dreadful laughters<\/span>
\nof eternity. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nNo lightning cleaves the night thy thunders
\nfill;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThy wounded bosom pours out
\nclamour<\/span> and wail;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe myriad serpents of infinitude <\/font>

\nTheir countless hoods above thy waves extrude.

\nI hear mid the loud
\nstormwinds<\/span> and the night <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nLeave, leave my days their natural life and
\ndeath <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nReclined in the heart’s grove, lulled with
\nmusic’s breath. <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe lotus of creation, like a rhyme <\/font>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTrembling with its own joy and sorrow, long
\n<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn the harmonious ocean of old Time <\/font>

\nHas floated, heaven above the infinite song.

\nAnd the links of rapture twixt our hearts are

\nMy heart leans out to hear thy song. Ah, when

\nlove-intoxicated hymns there start <\/span><\/p>\n

\nOn tossing waves these new sonatas of the heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeaven falters with the frequent, deep and solemn sound,

\nThe world is gazing as when the great Dance went round.

\nA horn is blown and cymbals clash upon the Void:<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSo deep a tabor never to earth’s music was allied.<\/span><\/p>\n
